So basically Im trying to dd remotely using a local image and a remote drive.
Tried running the command on my laptop and pointing to the remote location:
dd if=$fileName of=nvidia#<ip>:/dev/$drive
also tried running the command on the remote machine and pulling the file over ssh
dd if=nvidia#<ip>:/media/<myMountPoint>$fileName of =/dev/$drive
original (with everything on the remote location):
dd if=$fileName of =/dev/$drive
Error:
failed to open 'nvidia#<ip>:/dev/$drive': no such directory
any ideas?

I'm using VScode with Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and working through an SSH connection.
Unfortunately, the Remote - SSH extension by Microsoft doesn't enable X11 forwarding (#267), and thus an extension such as Remote X11 has been created.
Sadly, this extension doesn't work for me as I'm working through a jump host/gateway, and therefore have to manually change the DISPLAY variable in the VScode terminal to the DISPLAY variable found in another terminal that is used for displaying stuff.
I guess it is possible to get the DISPLAY variable by running tr '\0' '\n' < /proc/<pid>/environ | grep DISPLAY(Environment variables of a running process on Unix?), with the <pid> being run from the local terminal, and now it's just a problem of automating the search for this process.
So i guess the stuff I'm asking for, is a way to:
Get the pid from a process on a local terminal
Get the DISPLAY variable from this process
Set the DISPLAY variable in every newly opened terminal in VScode (perhaps running step 2 in the workspace-settings.json)
PS. I'm using the VcXsrv X Server

It works like a charm but I need to connect to my remote dev server using the official extension RemoteSSH by Microsoft.

I was having a similar issue and I resolved it by deleting the ".vscode-server" directory that was created on my server. It's a hidden directory that is created in the home directory (you can use "ls -la" to display all the files I believe). My hunch is that some incorrect data is being cached there so deleting the directory will give you a clean slate.
After deleting, you can try connecting again through remote-ssh on vscode.
I am trying to copy from remote ubuntu machine to local windows:
pscp name#example.com:/home/www/file c:\xampp\htdocs
Instead of getting a copy on local i get c:xampphtdocs file created on a remote.
I was refering to this http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.60/htmldoc/Chapter5.html
What am i doing wrong?

pscp doesn't handle well the colons in your path and it thinks that c is remote server. If you use relative path like this, it should work for you:
c:\
pscp name#example.com:/home/www/file \xampp\htdocs
I'm not sure if this is an issue with vagrant, virtualbox or a configuration issue inside the box itsef, however:
Using the following setup: Apache is running in the guest with its server root set to /srv/http, this is a synched folder which points to ./public_html on the host.
While most of the time it works as expected, the following steps causes an issue
1) Navigate to a file that doesn't exist localhost:8080/test2.css -- shows a 404 error as expected but correctly connects to the guest which is serving the error
2) Create test2.css with some content and place it in public_html
3) Reload localhost:8080/test2.css -- Still shows a 404 error even though the file now exists
4) To debug, run vagrant ssh and then ls /srv/http. Which shows:
ls: cannot access test2.css: No such file or directory
So it's seeing the file, sort of but it shows without any permissions:
-????????? ? ? ? ? test2.css
-rw-rw-r-- 1 vagrant 7 Oct 23 11:13 test3.css
If I then re-save the file as test3.css, a file that hasn't yet been accessed it works perfectly. E.g. on the host, save the file I had open as test3.css and then navigate to it, it works as expected!
Any ideas? On why this might be?
In short: If apache has tried to read a file that doesn't exist, creating that file will then cause it to have invalid permissions. If apache has never tried to read the file before, it can be created and work as expected.

This turned out to be a kernel bug on the guest. Upgrading to 4.2.4 using the same Vagrant/Virtualbox/Guest Modules solved the issue.
So I spent a few weeks on this problem now. I've been trying to get CrashPlan running on a headless FreeNAS server. I have found lots a tutorial to do this. However the fact is that I'm missing the .un_info file on my FreeNAS server after installing CrashPlan.
I have searched the whole file system to try and find the elusive .ui_info file.
I've tried creating it manually with information copied from desktop PC but that does not help me resolve my CrashPlan Pro app connecting to the Crashplan server service on FreeNAS.

The crashplan remote access behaviour changed several times during the last updates, however with version 3.6.3_1 you should find the .ui_info file in
/var/lib/crashplan/.ui_info
Although the jail version is 3.6.3 it's possible that Crashplan updated itself, please check this with:
tail -f /usr/pbi/crashplan-amd64/share/crashplan/log/service.log.0
In the end you want your Crashplan to update itself anyway. If the update process produces an error related to bash, please run:
pkg update
pkg install bash
ln -siv /usr/local/bin/bash /bin/bash
And restart crashplan while checking the log output with the tail -f command from above:
service crashplan restart
If you finally reach a recent version (>4.4.1), its time to remotely connect to crashplan.
The only change on the server necessary for the easiest method without ssh tunnel is the serviceHost tag in /usr/pbi/crashplan-amd64/share/crashplan/conf/my.service.xml.

Copy /var/lib/crashplan/.ui_info to the correct place on your desktop machine and edit the IP address at the end (to your servers address), for example:
4339,7f1d655f-*****,192.168.1.20
That's it, you can start crashplan on your remote machine and it will connect properly, there are no other changes neccessary. Latest crashplan (>4.4.1) will actually use the IP address from .ui_info.
Install JRE. You will need to add --no-check-certificate to the JRE wget line in the install.sh file
