Convert literal text/string to timestamp - sql

I imported data from a marketing source in my db and it changed the format of the timestamp.
This is how the timestamp stored in string/text format appears - 20220725115427 ---1
This is what this string actually means if you manually space it out - 2022-07-25 11:54:27 ---2
How do I go from 1 to 2? I want 2 in timestamp format.
Any help is appreciated.
I'm on Amazon Redshift Database - redshift SQL

Have you tried the TO_TIMESTAMP function?
Usage:
SELECT '20220725115427' AS str, TO_TIMESTAMP('20220725115427', 'YYYYMMDDHH24MISS') AS ts;
Please see this for forammting reference.

postgresql - creae view showing showing time as human readable [duplicate]

I am new to postgresql bot not to sql in general. I have a table that I need to read values from, on of the columns is a unix timestamp that I want to convert in to a more human readable format thus I found this:
SELECT lt,dw,up,to_char(uxts, 'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS')
from products;
But that produces an error:
ERROR: multiple decimal points
I am lost here. I am sure someone can show me how to do it. The documentation isn't that clear to me. Postgresql 9.5 is the database.
to_char() converts a number, date or timestamp to a string, not the other way round.
You want to_timestamp()
Convert Unix epoch (seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00+00) to timestamp
So just apply that function on your column
SELECT lt,dw,up,to_timestamp(uxts) as uxts
from products;
This assumes that uxts is some kind of number data type (integer, bigint or double precision)

Convert timestamp to varchar

I am writing a sql query in AWS Athena, where I have a timestamp field and I had to extract the dates of June 2021 (only dates, without time).
I am able to convert timestamp to date but then having trouble with converting to varchar.
Can anybody help please. Thanks in advance.
select substr(CAST(server_time AS VARCHAR)) from matomo_log_link_visit_action where server_time like "2021-06-%" ;
You can use the format_datetime function. For example:
select format_datetime(my_timestamp, 'yyyy-MM-dd')
see the docs: https://prestodb.io/docs/current/functions/datetime.html

How to change date format in hive?

My table in hive has a filed of date in the format of '2016/06/01'. but i find that it is not in harmory with the format of '2016-06-01'.
They can not compare for instance.
Both of them are string .
So I want to know how to make them in harmory and can compare them. Or on the other hand, how to change the '2016/06/01' to '2016-06-01' so that them can compare.
Many thanks.
To convert date string from one format to another you have to use two date function of hive
unix_timestamp(string date, string pattern) convert time string
with given pattern to unix time stamp (in seconds), return 0 if
fail.
from_unixtime(bigint unixtime[, string format]) converts the
number of seconds from unix epoch (1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC) to a
string representing the timestamp of that moment in the current
system time zone.
Using above two function you can achieve your desired result.
The sample input and output can be seen from below image:
The final query is
select from_unixtime(unix_timestamp('2016/06/01','yyyy/MM/dd'),'yyyy-MM-dd') from table1;
where table1 is the table name present in my hive database.
I hope this help you!!!
Let's say you have a column 'birth_day' in your table which is in your format,
you should use the following query to convert birth_day into the required format.
date_Format(birth_day, 'yyyy-MM-dd')
You can use it in a query in the following way
select * from yourtable
where
date_Format(birth_day, 'yyyy-MM-dd') = '2019-04-16';
Use :
unix_timestamp(DATE_COLUMN, string pattern)
The above command would help convert the date to unix timestamp format which you may format as you want using the Simple Date Function.
Date Function
cast(to_date(from_unixtime(unix_timestamp(yourdate , 'MM-dd-yyyy'))) as date)
here is my solution (for string to real Date type):
select to_date(replace('2000/01/01', '/', '-')) as dt ;
ps:to_date() returns Date type, this feature needs Hive 2.1+; before 2.1, it returns String.
ps2: hive to_date() function or date_format() function , or even cast() function, cannot regonise the 'yyyy/MM/dd' or 'yyyymmdd' format, which I think is so sad, and make me a little crazy.

Convert date format in Oracle

I have a date format 2011-01-06T06:30:10Z in Excel.I want to just load the date part into a table from excel.How do I get the date part from it.
i.e. 2011-01-06
Thanks
Try this:
select cast(TO_TIMESTAMP_TZ(REPLACE('2011-01-06T06:30:10Z', 'T', ''), 'YYYY-MM-DD HH:MI:SS TZH:TZM') as date) from dual
I think, some more explanation is needed.
Loading data into database is one part, and displaying it after fetching is another part.
If you have loaded the data into database, then all you need to do is use TRUNC. It will truncate the time portion and will display only the date portion.
A DATE always has a datetime part together. TIMESTAMP is an extension to the DATE type. And what you see the date looks like is not the way it is stored in database. The format is for we human beings to understand. A date is stored in 7 byte in internal format.
More information Based on OP's question via comments
NEVER store a DATE as VARCHAR2 datatype. A date is not a string literal. Oracle provides lot of FORMAT MODELS to display the datetime the way you want. Sooner or later, you will run into performance issues due to data conversion. Always use explicit conversion to convert a literal to a perfect DATE to compare it with other date value.

Changing SQL VARCHAR2 date to another date format

I have a date (stored as a VARCHAR2) in a database with the format:
20090123_163842.865
yyyyMMdd_hhmmss.ttt
and I want to make a SQL sentence to obtain:
23/01/2009 16:38:42,865
dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss,ttt
MY objective is to add it manually (I know that data can be exported from database, and imported into Excel, but I want to do it manually) to Excel as a recognizable Date.
How should my SQL sentence be?
I have tried to to it by:
select TO_TIMESTAMP(my_time_utc, 'YYYYMMDD_HH24MISS.FF3') from myTable
but I am only able to obtain:
2009-01-23 16:38:42.865
Thanks
It never ceases to amaze me how many people confuse these operations.
First you need to convert the varchar 'fake date' to a real date: use to_date for this.
Then you need to convert the date to a varchar for presentation: use to_char for this.
select to_char(to_date(column, 'yyyyMMdd_hhmmss.ttt'), 'dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss,ttt')
from your_table;
should do what you want.
When oracle retrieve a date field from database and show it to you a cast implicit conversion is made. The format pattern for this conversion is set in oracle configuration. Quoting oracle doc:
The default date format for an Oracle date value is derived from the
NLS_DATE_FORMAT and NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE initialization parameters
If you perform query from Excel, your actual query is enougth because excel know date format and is able to read from Oracle with out problems.
If you do a copy-paste from your screen results to excel, then you should cast back date to varchar with your desired format or, of course, change oracle configuration to match your locales.
