Redis georadius but with different sorting order - redis

I am using redis to store and fetch interesting info around the user and show it as a feed.
Lets say I need to fetch all listings with in a given radius R (WITHDISTance) BUT sorted in a reverse chronological order and NOT by distance (as with redis GEORADIUS command). To be more specific, the most recent listing (with in radius R) should be at the top even though it is the farthest of all.
Is it somehow possible to do this with geoset alone ? Else how can I achieve this using some combo of redis datastructures ?

You'll need to do the radius query and intersect the results with another Sorted Set that has the same elements but where the scores are timestamp. Then, page the resulting intersect in reverse order.

Redis: clean up members of ZSET

I'm currently studying Redis, and have the following case:
So what I have is a sorted set by google place id, for which all posts are sorted from recent to older.
The first page that is requested fetches posts < current timestamp.
When a cursor is sent to the backend, this cursor is a simple timestamp that indicates from where to fetch the next posts from the ZSET.
The query to retrieve posts by place id would be:
ZREVRANGEBYSCORE <gplaceId> <cur_timestamp> -INF WITHSCORES LIMIT <offset:timestamp as from where to fetch> <count:number of posts>
My question is what is the recommended way to clean up members of the ZSET.
Since I want to use Redis as a cache, I would prefer to limit the number of posts per place for example up until 50. When places get new posts when already 50 posts have been added to the set, I want to drop the last post from the set.
Of course I realise that I could make a manual check on every insert and perform operations as such, but I wonder if Redis has a recommended way of performing this cleanup. Alternatively I could create a scheduler for this, but I would prefer not having to do this.
Unfortunately Redis sorted set do not come with an out of the box feature for this. If sorted sets allowed a max size attribute with a configurable eviction strategy - you could have avoided some extra work.

In absence of such a feature, the two approaches you mentioned are right.
You can replace inserts with a transaction : insert, check size, delete if > 50

Best way for getting users friends top rating with Redis SORTED SET

I have SORTED SET user_id:rating for every level in the game(2000+ levels). There is 2 000 000 users in set.
I need to create 2 ratings - first - all users top 100, second - top 5 friends each player
First can be solved very easily with ZRANGE
But there is a problem with second, because in average - every user has 500 friends
There is 2 ways:
1) I can do 500 requests with ZSCORE\ZRANK and sort users on by backend (too many requests, bad performance)
2) I can create SORTED SET for each user and update it on background on every users update. (more data, more ram, more complex)
May be there are any others options I missed?
I believe your main concern here should be your data model. Does every user have a sorted set of his friends?
I would recommend something like this:
users:{id}:friends values as the ids of friends
users:scoreboard values as the users ids and score as the rating
of each
As an answer to your first concern, you can consider using pipelines, which will reduce the number of requests drastically, none the less you will still need to handle ordering the results.
The better answer for you problem would be, in case you have the two sorted sets as described earlier:
Get the intersection between the two, using the "zinterstore" command and storing the result in a sorted set created solely for this purpose. As a result, the new sorted set will contain all the user's friends ids with their rating as the score (need to be careful here since you will need to specify the score of the new sorted set, it can either be the SUM, MIN or MAX of the scores).

At this point using a simple "zrevrangebyscore" and specifying a limit, will leverage the sorted result you are looking for.

How to solve a Redis sorted set draw?

I'm using Redis to handle users points rankings, I gotta:
Store users points
Obtain users ranking positions
So I'm using zincrby to update ranking position and then I'm using zrevrangebyscore for the top list, zscore and zrevrank to obtain all what I need.
So, when a draw case is present (and I actually have lots of that) I can't trust in Redis criteria to sort.
My winning criteria for draw cases is Date, where oldest is first. These are MongoDB ids which I'm storing, so I could actually retrieve the date from _id.
So, if I want to know the actual rank for a user
Obtain the points user achieved, maybe using zrevrank.
Obtain all the users with same points.
Consider upper and lower bounds.
Order users with same points by date obtained from Mongo ID.
Assign a position according to the rest of same points draw and the upper a and lower neighbors.
I will code all this with the default node.js driver, so it's Javascript code which we're talking about.
How can any Redis command help me to achieve this?
Since a Sorted Set's score can be a floating point value, uou can store a combination of the timestamp and the ranking in it and use the decimal point as your "delimiter". That will give you both the ranking that's also based on the date.
Example, if my ranking is 50 and the time stamp now is 1438594593, the score in the set would be 50.856140541 according to the following "formula":
score = ranking + (1 - timestamp / 10^10)

Redis: fan out news feeds in list or sorted set?

I'm caching fan-out news feeds with Redis in the following way:
each feed activity is a key/value, like activity:id where the value is a JSON string of the data.
each news feed is currently a list, the key is feed:user:user_id and the list contains the keys of the relevant activities.
to retrieve a news feed I use for example: 'sort feed:user:user_id by nosort get * limit 0 40'
I'm considering changing the feed to a sorted set where the score is the activity's timestamp, this way the feed is always sorted by time.

inserting a past story requires to iterate through the list and finding the right index to push to. (which can cause new problems in distributed environments).
should I keep using lists or go for sorted sets?
is there a way to retrieve the news feed instantly from a sorted set, (like with the sort ... get * command for a list) or does it have to be zrange and then iterating through the results and getting each value?
Yes, sorted sets are very fast and powerful. They seem a much better match for your requirements than SORT operations. The time complexity is often misunderstood. O(log(N)) is very fast, and scales just fine. We use it for tens of millions of members in one sorted set. Retrieval and insertion is sub-millisecond.
Use ZRANGEBYSCORE key min max WITHSCORES [LIMIT offset count] to get your results.
Depending on how you store the timestamps as 'scores', ZREVRANGEBYSCORE might be better.
A small remark about the timestamps: Sorted set SCORES which don't need a decimal part should be using 15 digits or less. So the SCORE has to stay in the range -999999999999999 to 999999999999999. Note: These limits exist because Redis server actually stores the score (float) as a redis-string representation internally.
I therefore recommend this format, converted to Zulu Time: -20140313122802 for second-precision. You may add 1 digit for 100ms-precision, but no more if you want no loss in precision. It's still a float64 by the way, so loss of precision could be fine in some scenarios, but your case fits in the 'perfect precision' range, so that's what I recommend.
If your data expires within 10 years, you can also skip the three first digits (CCY of CCYY), to achieve .0001 second precision.
I suggest negative scores here, so you can use the simpler ZRANGEBYSCORE instead of the REV one. You can use -inf as the start score (minus infinity) and LIMIT 0 100 to get the top 100 results.
Two sorted set members (or 'keys' but that's ambiguous since the sorted set is also a key in itself) may share a score, that's no problem, the results within an identical score are alphabetical.

The OP wanted to collect data (using a ZSET) from different keys (GET/SET or HGET/HSET keys). JOIN can do that for you, ZRANGEBYSCORE can't.
The preferred way of doing this, is a simple Lua script. The Lua script is executed on the server. In the example below I use EVAL for simplicity, in production you would use SCRIPT EXISTS, SCRIPT LOAD and EVALSHA. Most client libraries have some bookkeeping logic built-in, so you don't upload the script each time.
Here's an example.lua:

Alphabetical index with millions of rows in redis

For my application, I need an alphabetical index on a set with millions of rows.
When I use a sorted set, and give all members the same score, the result looks perfect.
Performance is also great, with a test set of 2 million rows, the last third does not perform noticably less than the first third of the set.
However, I need to query those results. For example, get the first (max) 100 items that start with "goo". I played around with zscan and sort, but it does not give me a working and performant result.
Since redis is very fast when inserting a new member to the sorted set, it must be technically possible to immediately (well, very quickly) go to the right memory location. I suppose redis uses some kind of quicksort mechanism to accomplish this.
But.. I don't seem to get the result when I just want to query the data, and not write to it.
We use replicated slaves for read actions, and we prefer the (default) read-only config switch. So creating a dummy key and deleting it afterward (however unelegant) is not really an option.
I'm stuck a bit, and I'm thinking about writing a ZLEX command in redis-server itself. Which I could use like this:
HELP "ZLEX" -> (ZLEX set score startswith)
-- Query the lexicographical index of a sorted set, supplying a 'startswith' string.
127.0.0.1:12345> ZLEX myset 0 goo LIMIT 0 100
1) goo
2) goof
3) goons
4) goozer
What are your thoughts? Am I missing something in the standard redis commands?

It seems to be the easiest and most straight-forward solution for this use case, and Antirez could merge it into the main branch for everyone's benefit.

It can be useful depending on the length of the field by which you sort, this method requires b*(a^2) keys, where a is the length of the field , and b is amount of rows for this field.
