Visual Basic - Displaying a combo box entry over a textbox - vb.net

to keep it short and simple, I am attempting to display a number selected through a combo box on a second form through a label.
Here are the bits that are relevant to the issue I am having:
for i = 1 To 31
cmb_days.Items.Add(i)
next
' Populating combo box
days = cmb_days.text
frm_result.lbl_renting = "Renting for " & days & " Days"
I have tried using other variants such as cmb_days.selecteditem to no avail
I am also kinda having issues with like telling my code to do things with whatever number is actually selected in the combo box, idk I am veryyyyy new

That looks more or less correct.. But the question is where your call to update the label occurs in your code...
This is a minimal working example, with just a ComboBox on a form:
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
For i = 1 To 31
ComboBox1.Items.Add(i)
Next
End Sub
Private Sub ComboBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles ComboBox1.SelectedIndexChanged
Me.Text = ComboBox1.Text
End Sub
End Class
The update of the label (in this case the text of the form, but it works exactly the same with a label on a different form) occurs in the SelectedIndexChanged event of ComboBox1.
If you copied your code straight from the project, you haven't had time to select anything yet, so the Text property will be empty.

vb.net ComboBox Text Changing When Left

I'm having an issue with my ComboBoxes whereby if I type into it to get a value & then tab out the Text changes to the first item in the list with the first letter typed.
I have:
AutoCompleteMode set to SuggestAppend
AutoCompleteSource set to ListItems
DropDownStyle set to DropDownList
I add the items for the ComboBox in the Load event of the Form the ComboBox is on.
e.g. the below is code from a Load event where I populate a ComboBox that I have set up as below.
`Me.ComboBox1.Text = ""
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("a")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("aaa")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("combo")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("combobox")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("combobox test")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("common")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("common dialog")`
After running the code, if I select the ComboBox1 & type in common - common is selected in ComboBox1 but if I leave ComboBox1 the Text reverts to combo.
It gets a bit stranger as if I user the below code in the ComboBox1_Leave event procedure it throws common:
MsgBox(ComboBox1.Text)
I've also tried assigning the value of Text to a string in the ComboBox1_KeyUp event procedure & then assign that to ComboBox1.Text in the ComboBox1_Leave event procedure but that doesn't do anything.
If I put a the above MsgBox code before assigning the strings value to ComboBox1.Text then the Text value does revert to Common but this is isn't a practical solution.
I've also noticed that if I hit Enter before hitting tab it retains the correct value but again I'm don't think this is a particularly practical solution.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here & how I can fix it?
It is absolutely necessary to have the DropDownStyle set to DropDownList?
Because if you set DropDownStyle to DropDown the selected value will be retained when you press tab or lose the focus.
If it's absolutely necessary to have it that way, you could try this.
Public Class Form2
Dim selectedTextForCombo As String = ""
Private Sub Form2_Load(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Me.ComboBox1.Text = ""
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("a")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("aaa")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("combo")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("combobox")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("combobox test")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("common")
Me.ComboBox1.Items.Add("common dialog")
End Sub
Private Sub ComboBox1_LostFocus(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles ComboBox1.LostFocus
ComboBox1.SelectedItem = selectedTextForCombo
'This is just for a visualization of your issue
'Label1.Text = selectedTextForCombo
End Sub
Private Sub ComboBox1_SelectedIndexChanged(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles ComboBox1.SelectedIndexChanged
selectedTextForCombo = ComboBox1.Text
'This is just for a visualization of your issue
'Label1.Text = selectedTextForCombo
End Sub
End Class
Warning:
This example works with the tab action.
If the users writes something that doesn't exist like "commun" the
selected value will end up being the visually selected value, in this
case: "common"

TextBox event that will Clear User input

please am working on an Annual Crop Cashflow Calculator like an Excel
i have 3 text boxes.
textbox22 textbox31 and textbox71
if i multiply textbox22 by textbox31 it shows in textbox71
but the problem is i need an event jus like excel after calculating and user goes back to empty either textbox31 or textbox22 the answer in texbox71 should be empty...
but with what i have here d previous answer will still be there until user inputs another entry
solution please
below is my code
Private Sub TextBox71_TextChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TextBox22.TextChanged, TextBox31.TextChanged
If String.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBox22.Text) OrElse String.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBox31.Text) Then Exit Sub
If Not IsNumeric(TextBox22.Text) OrElse Not IsNumeric(TextBox31.Text) Then Exit Sub
TextBox71.Text = CDbl(TextBox22.Text) * CDbl(TextBox31.Text)
End Sub
You can add code to the Enter event that runs whenever the user enters a TextBox.
Private Sub MyTextBox_Enter(sender as object, e as EventArgs)
MyTextBox.Clear
SomeOtherTextBox.Clear
End Sub

combox selected index didnt work on picturebox

Now what i was doing is when i click a button group box 1 and group box 2 will show out i want to select the combobox item than the picturebox item will load
and this can be used it multiple time like when button-5 clicked the combobox item name will change and the picture will change too.
Private Sub Button4_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button4.Click
GroupBox1.Show()
GroupBox2.Show()
comboboxselectdiffrent.Items.Add("pizza_ChickenSupreme")
comboboxselectdiffrent.Items.Add("pizza_CockadoodleBacon")
If comboboxselectdiffrent.SelectedIndex = 0 Then
PictureBox1.Image = PIZZA_HUT_SYSTEM_NEW_VER.My.Resources.Resources.pizza_ChickenSupreme
ElseIf comboboxselectdiffrent.SelectedIndex = 1 Then
PictureBox1.Image = PIZZA_HUT_SYSTEM_NEW_VER.My.Resources.Resources.pizza_CockadoodleBacon
End If
End Sub
Can anyone tell me what i was do wrong? i have no idea why it wont work
After looking at your code personality I would have the event trigger from the combobox click, that way it will save the user having to first click on the combo to select their pizza and then having to click on a button to load the picture & details. Nevertheless try this.
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Form1_Load(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
ComboBox1.Items.Add("pizza_ChickenSupreme")
ComboBox1.Items.Add("pizza_CockadoodleBacon")
ComboBox1.DropDownStyle = ComboBoxStyle.DropDownList
End Sub
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As Object, e As EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
GroupBox1.Show()
GroupBox2.Show()
Select Case ComboBox1.SelectedItem
Case Is = "pizza_ChickenSupreme"
PictureBox1.ImageLocation = "Pictures/mypic.jpg"
Case Is = "pizza_CockadoodleBacon"
PictureBox1.ImageLocation = "Pictures/mypic1.jpg"
End Select
End Sub
End Class
Using a custom Folder within the solution explorer will be better than using a setting resource. Create a folder and drag your pictures into it and change the name of the image location to suit your needs.
Also i think using the items name is better than the items index because what happens if someone reason that indexed item is to change from 1 to 5, you would have to recode it all, but by using the items name, it has more detail as to what to look for.
If you have any problems, leave a comment and I will do my best to help you out.Happy Coding!

Passing variables between windows forms in VS 2010

I have two forms. Form 1 allows the user to pick an employee from a dropdown combo box. That employee is then passed onto Form 2 where the user enters additional information regarding that employee. That data will then be passed into a SQL table.
On form 1 I have:
Dim ChangeJobInfo As New Form2(Employee)
ChangeJobInfo.Show()
On Form 2 I have:
Public Sub New(ByVal Employee As String)
MsgBox(Employee)
End Sub
The variable passes just fine. The issue is that nothing shows up on the new form. When I setup Form2, I added a combobox, date picker, two text boxes, submit button, etc., but when the form loads it is completely blank. No errors, the MsgBox returns the right result, but none of my gui elements show up. If I change the code on form 1 to Form2.show() I see the form as laid out in the designer.
Any ideas on how to get those items to show up?
Change your code in Form2.vb for the New sub to this:
Public Sub New(ByVal Employee As String)
' This call is required by the designer.
InitializeComponent()
' Add any initialization after the InitializeComponent() call.
MsgBox(Employee)
End Sub
If you don't call InitializeComponent(), your complete GUI is not going to render.
You don't even have to use the InitializeComponent or New functions.
I have made an example to show how easily this can be done.
Clicking "Show Form" results in the below:
Private Sub Button1_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Form2.Show()
End Sub
which is simply used to display the second form.
By clicking "Pass Data" results in the following code:
Private Sub Button2_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Form2.Label1.Text = TextBox1.Text
End Sub
As shown above you can pass the data directly from control to control. The same idea can be used with variables too.
I am late but I think this answer can help.
For example, Form1 named "menu" opens and passes variable to Form2 named "ordine".
The variable to pass is "hotel"
In menu on button_click
Dim ordinef As New Ordine()
If ordinef Is Nothing Then
'control that form is not opened yet if open close before
ordinef = New Ordine()
Else
ordinef.Close()
ordinef = New Ordine()
End If
ordinef.hotel = hotel
ordinef.Show()
In Form2 (Ordine):
Private Sub Ordine_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
public hotel as string
msgbox hotel
That's it!!

combobox not being populated

I have a windows form project with a main form. There is a textbox leave event that opens a new form. In that new forms load event i have a combobox item loop that populates the combobox items. It works perfectly fine if run on the main form but doesnt work on the second form. Why doesn't the comboboxes on the secondary form populate when that form is opened via a textbox_leave event from the main form?
this is the leave event
Private Sub tbChartTitle_Leave(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles tbChartTitle.Leave
If Not tbChartTitle.Text = Nothing Then
frmTitleAttributes.Show()
End If
End Sub
This is the code that populates one of the comboboxes on the second form (it works if run on a combobox on the main form)
Private Sub frmTitleAttributes_Load(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
InitializeComponent()
AddFonts()
End Sub
Private Sub AddFonts()
' Get the installed fonts collection.
Dim allFonts As New Drawing.Text.InstalledFontCollection
' Get an array of the system's font familiies.
Dim fontFamilies() As FontFamily = allFonts.Families
' Display the font families.
For i As Integer = 0 To fontFamilies.Length - 1
cbxTitleFonts.Items.Add(fontFamilies(i).Name)
Next
End Sub
make sure that the Load handler is hit after you show your form (use break point)
also you can try to call it in the Shown event
Private Sub frmTitleAttributes_Shown(sender as Object, e as EventArgs) _
Handles frmTitleAttributes.Shown
AddFonts()
End Sub
