I just updated to the latest IntelliJ (135.666) and all of a sudden I'm getting a 2048 popup every half hour or so. I get the attempt to promote relaxing on regular intervals, but this?
So is this an actual IDE thing (and how do I disable this annoyance) or is it extra functionality of a plugin that I've never seen before today.
I've looked through all settings but can't seem to find anything.
As this seems to pick up interest I'm going to answer it myself:
It's for April Fools and it will cease at the end of the day.
According to Jetbrains it's only implemented in the last EAP and you cannot turn it of. Their advice is to use the previous version if it's too annoying.

I've been trying to find any type of documentation or examples on how to use the "IDE scripting engine" (or other quick methods of enhancing PhpStorm/IntelliJ IDEs) and found literally nothing that works.
I'm hoping for a bit of a guideline, maybe a snippet that leads in the right direction.
What I want to do:
When pressing Ctrl + Tab (shortcut for GitHub Copilot completion) I want my custom-script to wait for the completion to be inserted into the IDE code.
I want to immediately remove the code again and display it as a completion suggestion (should be quick).
Now I want to press a shortcut to accept the completion word by word until finished.
The possibly biggest problem of Copilot with countless of bug/feedback/feature reports since 2021 is that it inputs tons of code when people just want a tiny part. Like half a line. So users of it are forced to accept 12 lines of bad code, remove all the bad parts.
The reason probably is their marketing, they take those 12 lines (11 of them garbage) as efficiency improvement (12 lines of code accepted). So they don't fix it.
I want to fix it using the above method, the easiest approach would be the most welcome one.
Here is the only available data on the IDE Scripting console:
https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/ide-scripting-console.html
However, none of the examples even worked and there are barely any.
Here are the linked examples:
https://gist.github.com/gregsh/b7ef2e4ebbc4c4c11ee9#file-samples-groovy
Nothing of that worked either, various errors usually already in the first "imports" and no examples in "javascript"
Here is the finished code, I switched to Kotlin and from the dysfunctional scripting console to "LivePlugin".
https://github.com/cmp-nct/Stewardess
Stewardess takes over the completions through a new shortcut and plays them in word by word.
Also shows the Copilot internal status as temporary hint notification when it changes.
For some strange reasons it un-checks the Pretty listing (reformatting) of code option from time to time.
I have to keep turning it back on to keep my code "pretty" :-)
This has never happened on VS2013.
Just wondering does anyone have the same issue?
While my previous answer is a decent workaround, it's now been 10 months since this question was originally asked and it seems like most days Pretty Listing decides to turn itself off, and it's getting more frustrating. So here's another workaround that might lead us to the cause of this bug.
I wrote an extension that periodically checks if Pretty Listing has been turned off. If it has, it turns it back on and shows an alert at the bottom of the screen so we can hopefully work out what caused it to turn off in the first place.
It checks every 30 seconds, but you can lower this if you like (check the description on the extension page).
You can get the extension here: Pretty Listing Fixer
I've encountered the same problem (both with and without ReSharper installed, so that doesn't seem to be the problem). I "sent a frown" to Microsoft about this some time ago but have heard nothing back.
While this isn't a "fix", I have come across a handy workaround. Since "pretty listing" and the "Format Document" command give the same result, all you need to do is run that command.
I found this extension which automatically runs the Format Document command when you save. Now, even if "pretty listing" does get mysteriously turned off, I still end up with my code being formatted automatically.
This won't solve the problem as such, but there is an example of how to set the Pretty Listing option directly using a macro, here: Turn off pretty listing in visual studio
So you could set up a macro which you can run easily with a hotkey when needed. If that code doesn't work, I recommend the ever-magnificent AutoHotkey (www.autohotkey.com) to do the same thing via a series of keystrokes.
Sometimes when i hit Enter behind a line to write the next line my cursor jumps down like 300 lines of code within the same Java class which is absolutly annoying.
It jumps just to anywhere within the same file but always somewhere faar below the line i hit enter behind ... so its not jumping to a definition or something like that - it literally just places the cursor to a random point.
Did anyone ever had a similar experience? (I cant find anything on the internet hence i think its either a very easy to fix thing or something for the support).
Like could this be a side effect of defined live templates or something like that?
ANY suggestion could help since i tried out anything i could think of (code completion, live templates, editor settings - nothing looks like it would trigger this behaviour)
Note: I dont like this question at all but i am realy lost right now.
I have not seen any one run into this nor have I seen a bug report on such (and something like that would be a critical). I recommend the following steps:
Upgrade to the latest v14.0.3 if you are not at that version
Invalidate your caches and restart, then wait for IntelliJ to re-index your project (this is a bit of a long shot, but worth the couple of minutes it takes)
File/Application > Invalidate Cache
Disable all third party (i.e. non-bundled) plug-ins and restart
My strongest suspicion is that a 3rd party plug-in is causing the issue.
If this solves the issue, isolate the plug-in causing the issue and contact the developer.
If none of the above work, provide as much detail as you can about the issue as #Makoto suggests. What type of file; what are you doing; OS; IDEA version; etc, etc.
env: IDEA-14.0.2, kubuntu14.10 x64
Yesterday I use IDEA to learn source from Spark. When discussing with my partner, I write serval lines directly to the source, then I closed the IDEA without ctrl+S
Today when I open the project I found that those little changes still exist and make the source very dirty (and bit hard to remove them since they are everywhere). I assume that there's a autosave feature the avoid close without saving by incident.
how to close that on certain project? or do it globally?
Currently it can't be disabled. There are a few open issues in the IntelliJ's YouTrack, for instance IDEABKL-6460. There is a long discussion in this issue, but from comments like this:
Auto-saving is built in very deeply and many IDE features just won't
work without it (e.g. compilation, running, etc). For reverting
unwanted changes there's VCS, Local History and Undo.
Currently we don't plan to add a possibility to disable auto-save.
it seems that implementing this feature isn't planned and even if it was it would be probably difficult. But you can leave a comment and vote for the issue because the more people request this feature the more probable it is that it will get actually implemented sometime in the future.
As you are working on the IDE, suddenly it has no reaction, the whole IDE become inactive and can not operate on it, but with high CPU usage, If you kill the process from Windows Task Manager, after it launched, all modified lost since your last edit. This problem occurs every now and then.
My environments:
Windows 7, Intel i7, 16GB RAM, IDEA 12.1.6 with auto save enabled.
Did anyone come across this problem before, it's to bad as my changes lost and i have to rewrite it after restarted.
You'll want to upgrade to v12.1.6 as 12.1.5 had a major bug in it that was fixed in 12.1.6. The bug prevented compiling of code in some circumstances. 12.1.6 was released only a few days after 12.1.5. That may not be the cause of your issue, but is still good advice.
Other than that, the 12.1.x line has been very stable. I think your issue is an isolated case as I have not seen any mention of it in the IntelliJ IDEA forums or here. Often times, such deadlocks are caused by third party plug-ins. Take a look in the logs (Help > Show Log) to see if it has any information that explains the hang. Also, if IDEA becomes non responsive, it automatically logs thread dumps in the log directory. Those may have some information.
If you experience the issue again, you may want to disable any third-party plug-ins to see if that resolves it. If it happens frequently, you can take a CPU Snapshot as described in this document and submit it to the JetBrains.
Lastly, I recommend you tweak the following setting: File > Settings > [IDE Settings] > General > Save files automatically if application is idle for x sec." Set it to 15 or 30 seconds. (You don't want to go too low). This will help reduce any loss of work in the event of a hang (which after 10 years of daily IDEA use I can attest to as being very rare.)
