Entity Framework 4.2 table per hierarchy group by discriminator - vb.net

I am working on a project using an EF 4.2 code first model. This model contains a TPH inheritance structure for products. I need to group the polymorphic results of this inheritance model on the discriminator and am running into some issues.
The entity framework does not expose the discriminator to complete this grouping. My first question is can I get direct access to this discriminator? My reading and experience is telling me no, so I came up with this solution that sort of works. It is not performing well and I am not happy with how it will need to be maintained.

I built an extension method that takes a product and returns it's basetype name as a string.

With that, I built this structure to group the results of product by type so I can run through them:

I can now loop through the list to get the behavior I want, but the performance is not ideal and I am concerned it will be unacceptable as the number of products grows.

Also, this can give me easy access to shared properties (Name) but now I don't have many options to cast these into their real type, maybe a select case around TypeName. . .
Any recommendations are appreciated, also please forgive any code errors above, I retyped the examples from memory as I don't have access to the project at the moment.

A solution would be to model a bit more, and have a new entity ProductType having a property Name. Then you would have a simple 1-N relationship between Product and ProductType. I have not used EntityFramework, but with NHibernate you could easily make the framework always join that table on queries, so that it would not return a proxy for ProductType for each Product, which could harm performance.
As an add-on, in the future ProductType could develop other interesting properties (such as values that are common for every Product of that ProductType), so it adds flexibility to your solution, although it does have the immediate cost of adding another table to your database.

Need help deserializing JSON data from an external Web API and storing the data in a SQL database

So, I'm working with JSON for the first time within ASP.net.
Apologies, should have specified, language being worked on is c# within ASP.Net.

The variable body successfully draws down the JSON data in it's complete form. However, I'm looking to seperate each part into it's respective columns in a SQL DB.

I've used XML before and used XML readers to do the job but my understanding is that JSON is a very different way of working with data.
Could I please have some examples of ways I could deserialise the information and then some stored procedures to store them correctly as currently I've looked up several ways to acheive this but none have made too much sense.

However, upon running the code through the deserializer, the values assigned are coming through as "null". I would assume this would mean that the classes are not getting and setting any values.
Not quite sure on why the serializer is returning no values despite the "properties" variable having the full JSON string within.
Ok, so you could do this one of two ways:
use netonsoft - parse the jason.
(just like we do with xml - really a VERY simular approach).
Or, build a class that represents the XML, or json data.
So, in some cases, its easier to pluck out the values of the json string (using parsers and attribute selectors). A few loops.
So, MORE important, what is that json data?
Is it
Simple one reocrd, say FirstName, LastName, City?
or, is the data REPEATING data - a complex master customer invoice form with say one record at the top (customer information), and then repeating data of invoice details?
So, lets take a quick look at the data, see what we get.
Add a new blank class to y our project - ctrl-A - del key (clear out the class).

Now, back to the empty class in Visual Studio, and then this:
when we do this, the base (bottom root) class tends to get a default name of RootObject, and you no doubt been code and slicing and dicing json data all day.
So, we either change that name, but better yet, lets just toss around the whole mess a namespace.

Hum, not a super simple structure, and it does show/have some "repeating" data.
(and with repeating data, we care because then that SIGNIFICALY increases the difficult in taking that data to sql server.
One of the interview type of questions that google, Microsoft ask you?
They are questions of how high, how far, how big.
In other words, they want developers that have a sense of "scope".
I mean, you can walk with ease to a store down the block. But, if it is 5 miles away, then you really starting to solve that issue by adopting some form of motorized transportation - its too far to walk (so, how far, how big, how high type of question).
Ok, so we generated the class. lets look at it.
Right click -> view class diagram.

Ok, I'm going for coffee. So, at least we asked the how high, how far, and how big question then right?
You not just adding a few simple rows to some database.
You asking me to come to your house, clear out the garage, then cook you dinner, and then clean up the kitchen afterwards.
But, as least you can see how Visual Studio has some built in tools, and some things that let you get a quick and easy feel for what you up against.
Looking at above? I think you probably take the class road, and let Visual Studio create the class for you. You can then send that string to newtonsoft, and it will then peal it out like layers of a onion to the above class. (and its only 4 lines of code to do this).
At that point, then you can start to take that data, and send it to SQL server. but, it not just a simple User name and address here, but a grouping of multiple tables and data - all of which would have to be added to a database, and no doubt highly relational database that has all that information.
If you have that existing database schema? Then hey, this is not too bad then.
but, do the fields and columns and existing database you have match the json data?
So, then we ask another how high how far, how big question:
If the columns and database structure you have now does NOT match the json data, then we not really adding rows to a database, but are in fact doing a type of data migration - and now we have to introduce "mapping" for what amounts to 100+ columns or more. So, that's what I have that 2nd question:
Do you have a matching database structure (schema) now that follows the field names used in this json data ? (are field names 100% exact???).
Since, if the columns don't match, and that database you already have does not match the incoming data? Then you just increased the workload here by significant amounts - we now not adding rows, but having to translate from one data schema to another - and that going to cost you even more time and efforts here.

Ok, so I don't have the web service, so for this I'll just paste the sample data into a notepad.txt and read it. No problem.

I changed the name space around the class - due to having other test json objects. But, no changes - just a extra name space.

So a few things:
Try tagging the language - I am fluent in vb/c#, but will post as vb.net if lanaguage not speicfed.
So, since the data is a "array", then you have to either loop over all data tiems, or just pull out [0] as above.
Intel sense still works shows all items/properties of the class - VERY nice and helpful.

How to limit the properties needed for the view from the model

I am working very hard to understand the concept of Entity Framework and Models by building a new MVC Architecture Solution. I have started only with two Models that are identical to an (EXISTING DATABASE - That I must model after [Maybe comeback and re-factor later]), with a lot more models to come.
I get the data back to the VIEW no problem, however how do I scale down the CONTROLLER to only query items I need? In this example I have the code committed out (see below), but if I cast .ToList() it throws an exception because that is not the Model Type. I am sure I am missing something very simple, but I am stuck. Any help would be great.

Thanks again to the contributors on this. I am starting to figure out this puzzle and architect this solution. Yes yes I know you can separate out in to other projects, but this site is not needed for that.
Your model as you're describing it is your data model. The best practice for passing or accepting information to/from your view(s) is to use a new class as a view model. It will have only the information necessary for the view and nothing else.
The catch is that these are not always a 1 to 1 mapping (though some of might be). For example, my view models routinely have other information on them, such as collections required for dropdowns, boolean flags indicating if certain areas of the page should be rendered, api keys needed to passing along to javascript resources. It all depends on what your view's needs, but the ideas is that you give the view everything it requires, it should not have to go out and get it itself, unless there's no other way (which does happen in my experience).
Translating between data model and view model is something people have created specific tools for (like AutoMapper), just be aware that most rely on naming conventions of your object's properties being the same, and most would argue it's a bad practice to use an automapper-like solution for accepting information back from the browser.
You are trying to return "...(Select f.Question, f.Answer).ToList()" which would not result in a model of type CompanyName.Models.QAs.
Therefore either return the whole f.ToList() OR
Use ViewModels if you think that the Model has so many extra properties that you wont need all of them in your view. ViewModels are also like models but they are for your views in contrast with Models which basically reflect your database tables/relations in essence. If your view needs only 2 fields out of maybe 50 fields in your model than make a ViewModel for that view.

Custom Lazy Loading Open Access ORM

I'm working with open acces orm and I need a simple way to fetch just parent entity information and make a custom load of related children information. I mean when I ask for order I just want the orders information and to be able to load or not the orderlines information.

You need to declare that the "OrderLines" should be lazy loaded. You could use the FetchPlans API or declare the association to be loaded lazily explicitly in the configuration.
If you using code-only mapping you can define the load behavior:
orderLineConfiguration.HasAssociation(x => x.Order).WithLoadBehavior(Telerik.OpenAccess.LoadBehavior.Lazy).WithOpposite(c => c.OrderLines);
The OrderLines will now be lazy loaded. Please refer to the documentation here and here.

Simple relation between two tables

I started using NHibernate today, but I cannot figure out how I setup a simple relation between two tables. I don't really know what it's called, it could be one-to-many or foreign key relation (I'm not that into database design and the terms used), but here's a very simple example.
I have a table Product with attributes Id (PK), ProductName and CategoryId. Then I have a table Categories with attributes Id (PK) and CategoryName.
I created these classes:

In other words, I simply want the Product to store to which category it belongs (via the CategoryId attribute which points to an Id in the Categories table). I don't need the Category class to hold a list of related Products, if that makes it any simpler.
To make it even more clear what I'm after, this is the SQL that I'm expecting:

at least that's what I think it should be (again, I'm not that good at database design or queries).
I can't figure out which kind of mapping I need for this. I suppose I need to map it in the Product.hbm.xml file. But do I map the CategoryId as well? And how do I map the Category property?
It seems like I would need a 'one-to-many' relation since I have ONE category per product (or is this reasoning backward?) but it seems like there is no one-to-many mapping...

Addition:
I tried to add the many-to-one relation in the Person mapping, but I keep getting an exception saying "Creating proxy failed", and in the inner exception "Ambiguous match found".
I should maybe mention I am using an old version of NHibernate (1.2 I think) because that is the only one I got running with MS Access due to it not finding the JetDriver in newer versions.
I've put the mapping files, classes, and code where the error occurs in screenshots because I can't figure out how to post XML code here... It keeps reading it as html tags and skipping half of it. Anyway.

The Person and Category classes inherit Entity which is an abstract base class and defines the Id, Deleted, CreatedTime and UpdatedTime properties.
The code where the error occurs is in a generic 'manager' class (type parameter TEntity which must inherit Entity). It is simply supposed to load all entities with the Deleted attribute false. In this case, TEntity is 'Person'.
It works fine if I leave out the many-to-one Category mapping in the Person mapping, but then obviously the Category property is always null.
Oh yeah, sorry about the mix between C# and VB, the C# code is in a generic framework I use for multiple projects while the VB part is the actual implementation of that framework on my website and I just happened to use VB for that.

In your Product class only needs to contain a Category object, you don't need a CategoryId property. Then in your Product mapping you need to have this entry

The 'Ambiguous match found' exception was caused by the project targeting .NET Framework 4, which does not seem to be compatible with NHibernate 1.2.1. I switched to 3.5 and that seems to solve that particular issue.
Now on to the next. As you can see, the Person class has a CategoryName property that should return the name of the current Category object, or an empty string if the category happens to be null. This is so I can databind a collection of Person objects to a grid, specifying 'CategoryName' as a property to bind a column to.
Apparently this does not work with NHibernate. Whenever I try to databind my collection of persons, I get this exception:
"Property accessor 'CategoryName' on object 'NHibernateWebTest.Database.Person' threw the following exception:'Could not initialize proxy - the owning Session was closed.'"
This occurs on the 'DataBind' method call in this code:

This may have something to do with NHibernate itself, as I said I'm completely new to this. When I call my Load method I would expect it to return an EntityCollection(Of Person) with all its properties already set. It seems I have to keep the ISession open while I am databinding for some reason..? That seems a little strange...
Can I get around this? Can I make my Load method simply return a collection of persons already fully loaded, so that I can access CategoryName whenever I want?
Wait... Is this lazy loading perhaps?

NHibernate criteria query question

I have 3 related objects (Entry, GamePlay, Prize) and I'm trying to find the best way to query them for what I need using NHibernate. When a request comes in, I need to query the Entries table for a matching entry and, if found, get a) the latest game play along with the first game play that has a prize attached. Prize is a child of GamePlay and each Entry object has a GamePlays property (IList).
Currently, I'm working on a method that pulls the matching Entry and eagerly loads all game plays and associated prizes, but it seems wasteful to load all game plays just to find the latest one and any that contain a prize.
Right now, my query looks like this:

Two problems with this:
It loads all game plays up front. With 365 days of data, this could easily balloon to 300k of data per query.
It doesn't eagerly load the Prize child property for each game. Therefore, my code that loops through the GamePlays list looking for a non-null Prize must make a call to load each Prize property I check.
I'm not an nhibernate expert, but I know there has to be a better way to do this. Ideally, I'd like to do the following (pseudocode):
entry = findEntry(phoneNumber)
lastPlay = getLatestGamePlay(Entry)
firstWinningPlay = getFirstWinningGamePlay(Entry)
The end result of course is that I have the entry details, the latest game play, and the first winning game play. The catch is that I want to do this in as few database calls as possible, otherwise I'd just execute 3 separate queries.
The object definitions look like:

The proper NHibernate mappings are in place, so I just need help figuring out how to set up the criteria query (not looking for HQL, don't use it).
since you are doing this in each request maybe it should be better to set up two formula-properties in your entity.
The first one should fetch the latest Gameplay-Id and the other the first Gameplay-Id with a not Null property
this could be as such in the xml mapping file of Entry

this leaves you with the Gameplay Id's on the Entry entity and after you fetch it it would require another round trip to the DB to GetById-fetch the gameplay's
Alternatively you could work-around using filters.
Set the collection back to "lazy"
and create these nice filters

Gameplay winner = NHibernateSession.CreateFilter(entry.GamePlays , "where FK_PrizeId is not null order by InsertDate asc ").SetMaxResults(1).SetFirstResult(1).UniqueResult<Gameplay>();
And IFilters can be used in a multiquery as so have 2 db hits: one for the original Entry and one for the multiquery.
Last but not least, you could define 2 bags in the Entry entity, one IList<GamePlay> Latest and one IList<Gameplay> Winner which in the Entry mapping file would be filtered with the appropriate query (although i don't remember now if you can define TOP clauses in the filters) and set those as non-lazy. Then with a single round-trip you can have all the data you want with the following (ugly) syntax

Gameplay winner = entry.Winner[0]; //check this if null first
Gameplay Latest = entry.Latest[0]; //ditto
note that of all the solutions the 3rd is the one that provides a mechanism to generate additional queries, as the bag can be used in a Criteria/HQL query
