In matplotlib, how can the backgrounds of this graph and how do you set an arrow as an upperbound as shown on the right side of the graph? - matplotlib

I'm currently working on creating graphs similar to the ones above, but I don't know which functions create the backgrounds (like the hashed lines and solid blue background) and how to set the arrows as an upperbound (as opposed to an errorbar). Can someone please help? Thanks!

I tried using the uplims parameter within a plt.errorbar, but that arrow was very different from the one in the graph attached. I've tried different backgrounds, but I still haven't figured out which ones are used in this graph.

How to use toon shader to convert 3D models to patent drawings

USPTO requires patent drawings to be black and white lines images.
I'm using blender to make 3D models. At first I got this:

I checked "Edge" and set "Threshold" to max 255 in "Render" tab, I got:

It's too complicated for me and I don't know how to use render layers. So I tried another tutorial http://download.blender.org/documentation/oldsite/oldsite.blender3d.org/80_Blender%20tutorial%20Toon%20Shading.html , which says I should assign different materials with different colors to different objects, so I tried and got this:

You were close in the second image. Instead of using the Edge postprocessor, look in the Render panel check the box labelled "Freestyle".
Then in the Render Layers panel there will be a list of configurable options for Freestyle, including how thick you want the lines and the minimum angle required to render an edge.
The best results are if you use mostly shadeless materials with simple textures (just solid colour).

How do i set the borders of an mplot3d, and also make the grid lines lie behind the plot?

I have this plot as part of a PySide program;
And there are two problems I have with it. The first is the ugly grey border. I know I can can get rid of it using the toolbar option, but I can't find a way to it programatically, or make it default to that when it plots...
The second issue, is that it is drawing the grid lines on top of the surface, which I would rather it didn't do... How do I get the grid lines to be drawn underneath the surface?

this doesn't happen for all plot types - i.e.
that is fine.
If i try and plot multiple objects, then it can be a problem;
but i understand that's a limitation of mplot3d not being a try 3D engine, just a set of 3D images with a Z-Ordering, so the order of objects drawn becomes orientation dependant. (same graph - different angle: enter link description here).
The grid lines should surely always be at the bottom of the drawing though, no? Is there a way to force them to be?

Matplotlib in wx.boxsizer instead of panels

I read here:

that there are advantages to arranging content within a frame using Sizers instead of panels; sizers are more flexible. However many of the matplotlib examples with wxpython use panels anyway. Typically they difine a panel for the plot. I have designed a GUI using Sizers, and wish to put my matplotlib canvas into one of the Sizers without the apparent restrictions of a panel. Does anyone know how this is done, or where I can find a very simple example?

I am not familiar with matplotlib but I happened to come across this previous SO question about embedding matplotlib canvases.
From what I can tell the canvas is actually inside a sizer but that sizer is then wrapped inside a panel. The advantage of this is that you encapsulate all the relevant variables and keep them together. I.e. the canvas and all the relevant variables are kept as a single item that can be called. This is good if you plan to have multiple canvases or if your canvas will be only one part of a more complex GUI.
That said, I see no reason you NEED to put it panel. If your application is very simple (i.e. it will consist of JUST the canvas and nothing else) you could place it in you frame's sizer (see that previous question's answer and change wx.Panel to wx.Frame).

How to move a Core Plot graph

I have a Core-Plot Graph within a Mac Application. But the inside table is appearing shifted down and to the left of the containing "frame/border" so that neither of the axis' are showing. I cannot figure out how to change this does anyone know what parameters I need to change to fix this?

Not sure what you mean by "inside table". It would be easier to offer suggestions if you could post a screenshot.
Without seeing what's wrong, here are some common areas to look at:
If you haven't already done so, look at the example apps included with Core Plot for ideas. The Plot Gallery app has many sample plots and the others are useful, too.
You may need to add padding (paddingLeft, paddingBottom, etc.) on the graph and/or plot area frame. Padding the graph pushes everything in away from the edges of the graph. Padding the plot area frame pushes the plot area in so the axes and titles can hang outside the plot area (the area where the plots are drawn).
If you want to keep an axes pinned to a specific place, e.g., the edge of the graph, set up a floating axis. Otherwise make sure the orthogonal coordinate is set (it defaults to 0). For example, the orthogonal coordinate for the x-axis is the y-value where the x-axis crosses the y-axis.

Is it possible to animate markers in ArcMap?

I'm completely new to ArcGIS and ArcMap, but someone suggested this program to me for a project I'm working on.
I would like to animate individual entities on a map, and was wondering if it is possible to do so in ArcMap. I asked this earlier here and a member directed me to a tutorial on animating in ArcGIS. The animation in the guide was over a map spread (ie. each pixel on the map displays, say, a different color to indicate population data in the area). However I realized that if I zoom in a lot, eventually the image will degenerate into pixels, which is why I need an actual object to mark a certain point. I checked some online tutorials and it seems like we can place markers on the map. Can someone tell me if it is possible to animate these markers (for example via a for-loop)? And if so, could you point me in a direction where to start?

You can animate layers in ArcMap is the short answer. Its not as simple as using the timeline feature in Google Earth for example though. But then ArcMap is much more than just a visualization tool.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by the image degenerates into pixels. Are you saying that the markers were single points in the layer. Unlike Google Earth you are not confined to simply plotting points on the map. You can draw completely arbitrary shapes in ArcMap, which can be defined to cover actual areas of the map, so when you zoom-in the shape gets larger.
The way you need to load data into ArcMap to produce an animation isn't too simple. There might be other ways to do this, but the way I know of is to generate a NetCDF file. This file contains a 3D matrix of layer data, where each layer is separated through time. Because you generate a matrix, you are effectively placing a raster image over the map. Thus if you want to cover a large area, each matrix becomes large, and you multiply that by the number of time slices you wish to animate over.
Once you have a NetCDF file with your data in however, getting ArcMap to animate it and produce say a .avi file is pretty simple.
You could try just loading some of the example NetCDF datasets into ArcMap to see how/if they will work to get you started.
