curl, API request works in Insomnia, but not in generated code for curl - api

I have request in Insomnia. When I send it via Insomnia, no problemo. But when I generate source code for curl, it shows me this.

Remove the --header 'content-type: multipart/form-data; boundary=---011000010111000001101001 option.
It really should not be used like this: curl manages that header and the boundary on its own so changing it should only be done in the rare event you truly want and need to fiddle around with it.
A more minor second thing: --request POST should be dropped from the command line, as it is superfluous and easily cause problems if you add --location later on.

This flaw is said to have been fixed in a later version of Insomnia

For any folks bumping into this issue again, this answer correctly explains the reason for the problem.
Fortunately this should only be reproducible in versions 2022.3.0 and older versions of Insomnia.
If you use the latest one, 2022.5.1, the generated curl will no longer have this problem, example of a multipart request generated:

I use Ubuntu and installed cURL on it. I want to test my Spring REST application with cURL. I wrote my POST code at the Java side. However, I want to test it with cURL. I am trying to post a JSON data. Example data is like this:

You need to set your content-type to application/json. But -d (or --data) sends the Content-Type application/x-www-form-urlencoded, which is not accepted on Spring's side.
Looking at the curl man page, I think you can use -H (or --header):
-H "Content-Type: application/json"

(-H is short for --header, -d for --data)
Note that -request POST is optional if you use -d, as the -d flag implies a POST request.

Try to put your data in a file, say body.json and then use
curl -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data #body.json http://localhost:8080/ui/webapp/conf
For Windows, having a single quote for the -d value did not work for me, but it did work after changing to double quote. Also I needed to escape double quotes inside curly brackets.
That is, the following did not work:

Also, it's often still necessary to add the Content Type headers. You can do this once, though, to set a default, of add configuration files per-method per-site: Setting default RESTY options

HTTPie is a recommended alternative to curl because you can do just

It speaks JSON by default and will handle both setting the necessary header for you as well encoding data as valid JSON. There is also:

for headers, and
name==value
for query string parameters. If you have a large chunk of data, you can also read it from a file have it be JSON encoded:

This will cover necessary headers that were missing: no need to explicitly define the Content-Type and Accept headers.
The new curl way with --json
Early March 2022, curl released a new command line parameter --json with version 7.82.0. This allows for a shortcut to send through JSON and eliminating the need to define the Content-Type that you had missing and Accept headers as these are automatically assumed, hence reducing risk of mistakes:
curl --json '{"tool": "curl"}' https://example.com/
But wait... there is more. Instead of defining the json parameter as a string to the curl command line, use the nifty jo CLI tool to define JSON as series of key value pairs and pipe the output through curl. Using jo only to define your JSON, it works this way:

Of course, you should never use BASIC authentication without SSL and a checked certificate.
I ran into this again today, using Cygwin's cURL 7.49.1 for Windows... And when using --data or --data-binary with a JSON argument, cURL got confused and would interpret the {} in the JSON as a URL template. Adding a -g argument to turn off cURL globbing fixed that.

You could also put your JSON content in a file and pass it to curl using the --upload-file option via standard input, like this:

The issue is here:
HTTP/1.1 415 Unsupported Media Type
Server Login can't interpret the Media Type of this request, so it is parsing it as text/html
The media type of any resource is declared in the Content-Type
property of the request header
"accept" ... header will fail this request, so the following is required for any JSON request to be sent i.e. content-type

I have a FastAPI with the following type:

How to change --header 'Accept: application/json' to --header 'Accept: application/xml'

WSO2 API manger how to change --header 'Accept: application/json' to --header 'Accept: application/xml'?
I have added some APIs to WSO2 API Publisher. I can connect via API Console for some API but some failed. I noticed the one failing due to --header Accept: application/json'- all other which connected successfully has --header 'Accept: application/xml.
Also it keep return Response Code 0 with Response Headers:
"error": "no response from server"
I have tried to update this but still the same: /opt/wso2am-2.1.0/repository/deployment/server/synapse-configs/default/sequences/_auth_failure_handler_.xml
Please advise.
In the publisher where you define the resources for your API, you can specify the "Produces" field (set it to application/xml), that should be used as the default value from the API Store test console.
Regardless that - the client could post any Accept header in the request. The "Produces" field is only an indication, it doesn't enforce the header value.
I suggest you test the calls anyway using the curl (SoapUI, Postman or any other feasible tool) so you can see what the service REALLY returns. The "Response Code 0" message usually means some error response (400, 500, .. anything) it's just not necessarily shown in the DEV console.

how to send correct curl command to webserver

So I got the data that is being sent to a specific server. Now I want to do the same using curl from my local machine to play around with specific repsonses from the server and learn more about curl as well.
Here is part of my data
POST /auth HTTP/1.1
platform: android
X-Auth-Token: <censored>
Content-Type: application/json; charset=utf-8
Host: api.blabla.com
Accept-Encoding: gzip
And the data that is being sent:
{"blabla_token": "sdsadsad", "blahblah_id": "23213", "locale": "us"}
Now when I try cURL in my dos shell, I try
curl --insecure -X POST https://api.blabla.com/auth --data '{"blabla_token": "sdsadsad", "blahblah_id": "23213", "locale": "us"}'
The response I get from cURL is this:

Even though I specified the token. So there are two possible scenarios because the token is correct:
It has something to do with the SSL thing? (I use --insecure because I get an SSL error otherwise)
Something about my command is not correct but I can't figure out what.
Can someone kindly help me out? I am trying everything I can without success
I am not sure if I understand your application specific right, but probably one thing you need to take into account:
man curl says:
-d, --data <data>
(HTTP) Sends the specified data in a POST request to the HTTP server, in the same way that a browser does when
a user has filled in an HTML form and presses the submit button. This will cause curl to pass the data to the
server using the content-type application/x-www-form-urlencoded. Compare to -F, --form.
-d, --data is the same as --data-ascii. --data-raw is almost the same but does not have a special interpreta‐
tion of the # character. To post data purely binary, you should instead use the --data-binary option. To URL-
encode the value of a form field you may use --data-urlencode.
As I can't see in your example the necessity of sending data as HTML form input, probably your application expects just a "raw" POST body and then you have to try this:

PS and for sure this is error is not about using --insecure which just asks curl to neglect ssl verification
you forgot the headers and enabling compressed encoding (gzip), however, i believe you can't force curl to only support gzip encoding using the curl command line alone, you will have to use libcurl, this will make the request say "Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate" on most systems, using --compressed .. if that's not acceptable to you, rewrite it using libcurl (where you can force it to say only "gzip", if you wish, via CURLOPT_ENCODING )

another gotcha: on some systems, there will be a default useragent header (like debian 6), while on some systems, curl comes without a default useragent (like debian 8).. you might want to use --user-agent '' too
