How to add logging to WCF? - wcf

I've used the solution from here for logging (and insert to DB) REST request successfully, now i have to do the same to WCF

I've tried to do the same by adding [LogApiRequest] to the WCF function but it did not work.
How can i implement the same solution for WCF?

The custom attribute - LogApiRequest - derives from System.Web.Http.Filters.ActionFilterAttribute. The reason your attribute works in your web api is because asp.net or asp.net core processing pipeline supports calling custom code defined in user defined code - you are plugging custom feature in the processing pipeline.

The reason it does not work with WCF is because that processing pipeline does not support customisation through HTTP filters.

You will find yourself editing custom configuration files most of the time.
I cannot give you a short attribute name or configuration script because it depends on type of WCF endpoint you are implementing, their name etc. The tracing and message logging link above contains some samples. Copy paste those configurations but edit file path and interface names based on what you have got code. That should work.

How to fix WrongInputException in ASP.NET Core?

I want to use a SOAP web service prepared by another team, used internally in my new REST API prepared in ASP.NET Core. My web service client code was scaffolded with WCF Web Service Reference Provider Tool. I cleaned up code (e.g. I changed property and method names) according to my team's naming convention.
When I send requests by my new REST API, I received WrongInputException. I checked all the parameters from an example request, all of them are in the same place in my C# code consuming scaffolded client.
I don't know what message exactly is sent by my new REST API.
In my case, the main cause of the described behavior and WrongInputException was premature refactoring. I changed the names of properties in the web service client without knowledge of the consequences.
E.g. if the element in the request body is objectRefNum, then I cannot simply change the related property in the scaffolded service reference class, because - without extra configuration - that name is copied with the same letter case to the request body of the SOAP envelope. The SOAP envelope should be encoded in the case-sensitive mode.
To trace the raw request body send by my new REST API in ASP.NET Core, I followed instructions from this excellent answer.
(Note, BTW, that kind of error (applying inappropriate letter case) could be handled by IDE, at least as a warning, but it is not, so: we need to be careful when we make refactoring, even if we have unit tests covering all the paths, and even if we use semantic renaming supported by IDE.)

What is the purpose of AddFormatterMappings() on Asp.net Core 2

I am evaluating the configuration of a Web API App with Asp.Net Core 2. To configure I know it is better for my project to use .AddMvcCore() rather then use AddMvc() since I don't need Razor as we can see here.
Now, I am not sure if I also need this .AddFormatterMappings(). So my question is what is it for?
You can see from the source code in the MVC GitHub repo that it adds a FormatFilter service into the DI setup. The summary for the FormatFilter class is as follows:
A filter that will use the format value in the route data or query
string to set the content type on an ObjectResult returned from an
action.

Ninject dependency into AuthorizationAttribute MVC4 Web API RC

I have a custom authorization attribute, required only for some actions, which checks the request headers for a custom token. The token is checked in a database. Checking the database requires access to a service which I would like to have injected through the constructor.
The way I have read this can be done (here, here, and here) is by having a constructor-less filter and injecting the dependent one like this:

However the BindFilter method is not available to me as I have setup Ninject as described here. This is using Ninject.Web.Common instead of Ninject MVC3 as I read that Ninject MVC3 would not work with MVC4 RC. How else can I go about accomplishing this?
I have read also that I could add to GlobalFilters.Filters - however I don't want it to be present on every action.

I'm not completely sure I see how you have set up your application, but my experience has been that if you want a filter for a WebApi controller you need to add it to the HttpFilterCollection that is available from the GlobalConfiguration.Filters. This is a Different set of filters than what MVC uses (through the GlobalFilterCollection).

Accessing .NET WCF services from Android

I have a .NET WCF service (not a web service) with many methods, some accepting and returning complex data types. I use these services from my Windows Phone 7 apps. It all works great and it's easy.
Now I'm evaluating the feasibility of porting some of my apps to Android, but I can't figure out how to invoke my WCF services from an Android client.
I have a working example I found in Invoke webservices from Android.
But this looks to be accessing a "Web Service", not a WCF Service.
My service is at http://www.deanblakely.com/Service2.svc, and it contains a simple method named "SimpleTest" that just returns the string "Alive".
Using the code in the linked article, I put http://www.deanblakely.com/Service2.svc in SOAP_ADDRESS and SimpleTest in OPERATION_NAME. But I have no idea what to put in SOAP_ACTION and WSDL_TARGET_NAMESPACE. I don't even know if this approach is valid.
In .NET, Visual Studio builds us a "Service Reference" and everything just works.
I also don't understand the following two lines of code...

Object response = envelope.getResponse();
With WCF services, the call is async so we make the call to SimpleTestAsync and leave a callback for the async return. These two lines of code appear to be synchronous, no?
When communicating with WCF services from a non-Windows client, you are basically treating it as an XML Web Service. If you configure your WCF service to use a basicHttp binding, it will act just like any other web service, as far as Java is concerned.
Normally, to call a WCF service from Java, you use wsimport to create a custom set of proxy and data classes, similar to the way a service reference works. Android doesn't have all the libraries needed for those classes, but I did find this URL:

That is a proxy class generator specifically for Android. Instead of using the code on that web page, you may want to download this proxy generator; you simply have to pass it the URL to your service's WSDL page and it will create typed Java classes for everything. If you have complex types being passed back and forth, this is probably a much better option.
However, if you want to continue with the sample code, you'll need to fill in those variables you've identified. The variables are just the typical parameters for a SOAP envelope. These are defined in the WSDL for your service, and are primarily based on the namespace that you have defined for your service. (They are largely independent of the actual URL that your service lives at, with one exception). You specify the namespace in the WCF service contract:
[ServiceContract(Namespace = "http://namespaces.deanblakely.com/wcf")]
Note that the namespace URL doesn't need to point to a real resource, though frequently they do. It doesn't even need to be a URL (I often use urns); it just needs to be a unique string of characters. For now lets assume you assigned the above namespace to your service.
The WSDL_TARGET_NAMESPACE is just the namespace, exactly as above. The OPERATION_NAME is the name of the method you want to call, for example SimpleTest. The SOAP_ACTION is the combination of namespace an operation; in your case that would be http://namespaces.deanblakely.com/wcf/SimpleTest. In your WSDL you would see this described in an operation tag:

The SOAP_ADDRESS is the only one that actually points to your service file, e.g. http://www.deanblakely.com/Service2.svc.

Yes, the method described on that web page is synchronous. WCF service methods are synchronous by default, with the option to include asynchronous calls when generating a service reference in Visual Studio. wsimport generates async-ready proxies, so using the Android client generate may also help you out in this area.

Type 'System.Web.HttpRequest' cannot be serialized

I am trying to design an Picture Upload feature into a web site.
I am using ASP.NET 3.5, C#, and WCF.
I have been asked to accomplish the following:
1) Make the Uploader a Web Service
2) Return progress updates to the user as files are uploaded.
3) Log other relevant user-selected options in the database.
So, I have started off by creating a WCF web client with the
below service contract:

When I compile, I get the below error:

So, I went back into my service contract and
changed [OperationContract] to [DataContract]
but the change produced the same error.
Can somebody kindly tell me what I am doing wrong
and provide examples as to how to best move forward?

You cannot use something like a HttpRequest as a WCF parameter. The error messages says it all - the HttpRequest is not serializable, and in order to work with WCF, types have to be serializable.
Also, you need to remember: you're not just passing an object instance to a method here - what you're really doing is having the WCF runtime serialize your request (the method name to call plus all the parameters passed in) into a message (think: e-mail or xml file), sending it to the server, deserialising there and building up a new copy of the given datatype (as defined in your DataContract), and doing something with it.
Your WCF service could well be self-hosted, e.g. running in a NT Service or console app - no HttpRequest available in those circumstances!
You need to definitely rearchitect your solution - you need to either check into WCF streaming to upload files to WCF (google for it - you'll find plenty of hits) or you'll need to find another way to pass the relevant info (e.g. list of filenames) to the WCF service without use of a HttpRequest object.

You are submitting a request as a parameter to a request. This is not what you want to do. I'm assuming that "Request.Files" is an array of files. This is what you want to upload. So something like:
