Do apps need a purpose to be accepted by the App Stores? - react-native

I created an application that simply spins a picture of my goose on screen. That's it. Nothing else.
Could that be deployed to the app stores?
Context:
I'm a mobile app engineer for a few different companies (finTech, gigEconomy, social...) and all of our applications have very specific use cases for the end user.
I'm also an artist in my own time, and have built a few different apps that help people make art.
For each of these, the data gathered by the apps must be well documented and explained to the end user to be accepted by the App Store along with the purpose of that collection.
That's got me thinking, would the Apple App Store accept an app that does not collect any user data at all, but also has no true "purpose"? (Google Play Store too, though I expect their review process is so easy you can get just about anything up there anyways...)
I haven't found any relevant answers to this question online and might test it just for fun, but would love some insight by other curious developers if they have tried uploading apps just for fun

You might find the following section from the official App Store Review Guidelines useful:
4.2 Minimum Functionality
Your app should include features, content, and UI that elevate it beyond a repackaged website. If your app is not particularly useful, unique, or “app-like,” it doesn’t belong on the App Store. If your App doesn’t provide some sort of lasting entertainment value or adequate utility, it may not be accepted.
Does this include a purpose or does this mean that an app like you have suggested in your scenario gets rejected? Absolutely not.
After a quick google search, I have found the IsItMyBirthday app which lets you pick a date and it tells you if that date is today. Is this useful or unique? We could just look up the date in the calendar on the phone itself.
However, this could be considered a 'joke' and a joke has a purpose and might be considered as unique. An app that does nothing, could be considered a joke as well. It has a purpose and Apple might agree or disagree.
In my experience it can be very random on why an app gets rejected or accepted. For example one of our apps got rejected in version X for reason Y. We released a new version without changing Y and it was accepted.

Verification Google OAuth2 concert scren with the apps for personal use only

I recently asked this question and user's #DalmTo and #Sergio NH they gave me an exhaustive answer for which I thank them very much.
Moving forward to question, we started publishing the application, and its verification was not required, since no scope was added (here it is a little unclear why the requests worked in an application with a test mode in which these scope were not added (google drive, google sheet and google ads)).
However, this time the application in the "In Production" mode began to give us an "Unverified app screen" (see Unverified app screen). We decided that we still need to add scope to the list, and, of course, that the scope list (their list is described above) requires verification by Google.
We started filling in the necessary fields, while studying the Google documentation at the same time, and came across the following information (see block Verification process -> What are the requirements for verification?):
Apps not applicable for verification
Apps for internal use only
(single domain use) Apps for personal use only Apps that are Gmail
SMTP plugins for WordPress Apps that are in development or
staging/testing
Apps for personal use only
And this is just our case: we have already received permission from Google Ads and are just generating simple reports that we want to integrate with Google Sheet. I.e., this is an elementary script that works within this account (however, we still need to request the first concert screen, even for this developer account) and cannot be distributed to any other accounts.
But when adding our scope, Google requires us to pass verification, forcing us to fill in the required fields, in the form of domains and their verification via the Search Console (we have already done this and this stage does not cause difficulties) and links to Youtube videos - where we must show how scope is used.
And just this stage is not clear. We do not allow other people's accounts to connect to this application, and the software does not have any interface, it is just a script that receives data from Google Ads and saves it to Google Sheet (creating a file via Google Drive). We have described all this in the scope usage description field. But the link to the Youtube video is require field, and we sincerely do not understand why (considering our case) we should record something, and most importantly, what exactly we should record in this case. If the documentation itself says that in our case we do not even need a verification.
Maybe we did not understand something and now we are doing it wrong? We will be glad to receive any tips from experts working with Google Cloud Console and apologize in advance for broken English.
We also apologize in advance to the StackOverflow community that we have to publish such elementary (which we are absolutely sure of from our side) questions here. It is true that if your app is a single use app then you do not need to be verified.
However if you don't get your app verified then there will be some restrictions.

your refresh tokens will probably only be good for two weeks.
In the case of the YouTube api uploaded videos will be suck private.
If you can live with those points then you don't need to verify your app and you can continue as is.
If on the other hand you don't want to see the unverified app screen and you want a refresh token that will last longer then two weeks. You will need to verify your app. Yes, Even if your app is a console application running as a job some where you still show the consent screen. This is the YouTube video you will need to show Google. Show the consent screen popping up show the URL bar and then show your script running. You also need to set up the homepage and privacy policy screens. Yes i 100% agree with you that this is silly.
When you go though the process. Explain to google that this is a single use script running as a job some where.
Unfortunately when Google changed it so that Refresh tokens expire for unverified apps they pretty much tied the hands of all developers who are running such single user scripts. We now have to get our apps verified if we don't want to have to request a new refresh token every two weeks.
If your program needs to access the requested scopes of the Google account privacy, even though the user is yourself, you also need to provide a youtube video to demonstrate how you use this program. The auditor cannot guarantee whether you will make this program public.

Considerations for Creating Industrial Applications (Native/Web)

What considerations are needed when creating a web app that is intended to be used in an industrial plant setting for a company? My specific use case is an industrial facility with several different production plants that would each have its own device for the application interface.
How do companies enforce the usage of such apps on a monitor/tablet? For example, could I prevent them from using other stuff on the tablet?
Importantly, how would security work? They'd share a device. There may be multiple operators that use the app in a given shift. Would they all use the same authentication session (this is not preferable, as I'd like to uniquely identify the active user)? Obviously I could use standard username/passwords with token based sessions that expire, however, this leaves a lot of potential for account hijacking. Ideally, they'd be able to log on very quickly (PIN, perhaps?) and their session would end when they are done.
As long as there is internet connection, I would presume that there isn't much pro/con regarding the use of native applications versus web based or progressive web apps. Is this assumption correct?
What's the best way of identifying which device the application is being run on?
Is this a common thing to do in general? What other technologies are used to create software that obtains input from industrial operators?

I'm not able to answer everything in great detail but here are a few pointers. In the environment as you describe we usually see these two options. 1) you tell them what you need, internet, security, if they give you device and how it will be configured 2) they tell you exactly what you need to deliver.
I do not think you can 100% prevent them. We did it by providing the tablet( well laptops in our case) and the OS configuration took care of that, downside we had few devices to support. You seem to hint that there is always an internet connection so I guess you can collect all info about the system and send it back to you daily?
We were allowed to "tap" into their attendance SW and when you entered the facility you were able to use your 4 digit pin to log in if you were out of premisses you could not log in at all. I can imagine the following: you log in with your username and password - this does full verification, after that, you can use 4 digit pin to login for next n hours.

touched on this in 1. You could also use device enrolment process. You can also contractually force them that there will be only your software and it may invalidate support contract. It really depends on your creativity. My favourite( and it works - just tell them, there will only be installed my software and if not you will pay me double for support. I only saw one customer who installed some crap on the device when there were told not to
it really depends on what industry you are talking about, every industry is different. We almost always build a custom solution
The enforcement of the device/app usage depends on the customer, if the customer asked for help in the enforcement, then you can provide guide, training and workshops. If the customer serious about the enforcement then it will be a policy that's adapted by all the organization from top to down. Usually seniors will resist a workflow change more than juniors, so top management/executive should deal with that. Real life story: SAP team took 6 months to transform major newspaper workflow, during that few seniors got fired because they refuse to adapt the change.
Security shouldn't handicap the users, usually in industrial environment the network is isolated or at least restricted through VPN to connect multiple sites (plants in your case), regarding the active user: we usually provide guide/training/workshop for the users and inform them that using colleague account or device will prevent the system from tracking your accomplishment/tasks, so each user is responsible to make sure the active account/device is the one assigned to him/her.
It depends, with native you have more controls than web, but if the app is just doing monitoring then most of today apps use web for monitoring and the common way to receive input is REST APIs (even if the industrial devices doesn't support REST API, a middleware could be written to transform the output). If you need more depth about native vs web you need to ask new question with more details about the requirements.
Depends on the tech you are using (native or web), and things I mentioned in point 2: you can use whitelist of devices that's allowed to run the app. overall there are many best ways to track down the device.
How common in general? I think such information can only be achieved by survey, the world full of variations. And having something common not mean its safe or best, our industry keep changing at all levels. So to stay in the loop, we must keep learning and self-updating without reboot.

How to figure out that two apps are on the same device on macOS(Alternative of identifierForVendor in macOS)

advertisingIdentifier is different for apps from the same vendor.
Of course there is an ability to add apps into group and share some "unique string". But I suppose that there must be some easier way.
I also read about "Uniquely Identifying a Macintosh Computer" but I suppose that such apps are rejected in mac AppStore.
In our app we access the system serial number. We use it to try prevent multiple users using the same account + for debug purposes (so not for ads or anything, our app has none).
We also have code to access the hardware uuid but that code isn't actually used at the moment, but it is in there, so not sure how deep Apple checks. So you might be able to use this one too. As an additional step you could hash either of these (or hash them appended or something).
This app has been on the AppStore for a long while now, and was never rejected for this reason. So I'd say accessing this data on macOS should be ok (for now) depending on usage and safe to submit to the app store.
Keep in mind that in some rare cases, the serial number will not be available. In that case we store a random string in UserDefaults.standard and use that cached value in the future.
Since this information won't be available to your 'other' app(s), this workaround won't work for you though.

How to get third-party API up-to-date?

So, I stepped once at this problem. I had offered a website that used the SoundCloud API. Everything worked properly. Content was extracted from the JSON and placed in the layout of the website. However, I received an email one day from the owner of the website, which indicated that the website did not work properly. I then came out to investigate and came to the conclusion that the "problem" was not on my side, but at SoundCloud's side. I studied on the API page of SoundCloud and came to the conclusion that the API had received a major update, making the link with SC and the site no longer worked.
Lately I'm trying many new APIs to, including those from Instagram and Dribbble. I was therefore wondering if it is at all possible to ensure that such problems can be reduced in the future or it might be appropriate API pages of this third-party APIs to monitor?
There's no "right" answer. After many years of using and maintaining many APIs here are some of the conclusions I've come to:
The best providers let you work with a specific version of their API whose interface and expected behavior never changes. They might release bug fixes and new endpoints, but you can be confident that as long as the API is supported it will not break your system.
A good provider will provide an end-of-life date for each version of their API. It's up to you to keep track of when you need to update.
Paid services will often be supported longer than free services. Plus the contract / SLA will guarantee it remains available for a specific amount of time.
The most popular APIs often have mailing lists and/or blogs. For those that offer it, sign up to be notified of updates. For those that don't you'll have to monitor their blogs or news posts. And I suggest not using any service that would drop support for an API version without warning.

Location-specific (GPS-based) apps and the Apple Review Process, should they work without GPS too? [edit]

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of submitting location-specific apps to the Apple App store.
What I mean by location-specific is an app that only works when you are at a particular location. For example, a GPS tour of a historical battleground might have content that is triggered at particular lat/long coordinates when the user is at the actual physical location.
So my question is: In order to make the app be likely to be accepted on the app store do I..
(1) Not worry about it as there's evidence that the Apple Reviewers have some way of simulating the GPS. I can then supply lat/long coords to the reviewers so they can experience some of the content.
or (I suspect more likely)
(2) I Need to make it work anywhere in order for the reviewer to see at least some of the content (e.g. have a menu or map interface that allows direct access). This could be a 'secret' option explained in the review notes accessed via a special key combination or something.
Has anyone else run into a situation like this?

Edit: Thanks for the responses. My app has now been accepted by Apple. Interestingly I didn't need to make the app work anywhere or add any new methods of using the app at all, they simply asked me for a video of the app in action. I made a YouTube video of the app (unlisted of course) and sent it to the reviewers.. and now it's accepted! I was very surprised that this is how it worked out!
I asked this same question (and answered it myself) a while back. I basically added a "Drop Pin" feature so the testers (and users) could pretend to be somewhere else.
I submitted an app recently that "works anywhere" (and uses GPS) but "works best" in New England when looking for data (on our server) that is near your current location. The app also supports entering a city & state or zip code to perform searches. So, in the submission, you can tell the reviewers how to test it, and we explained the nature of the app and how to test the functionality by using specific New England locations. The app was approved, for what it's worth.
Basically, when you submit an app, there is an opportunity to give the reviewers guidance. So definitely tell them what they need to know to make your app work for them, wherever they might be in the world! :-)
