Newbie question: Want to call an API url (using GET method) and process the answer I get

I'm new to this site (as a writer. I'm a long time silent-reader..), and doing my first steps in writing simple VB.NET winform/console applications, using VS 2010 system.
I want to start with writing a simple program that will use an API I have access to, for sending SMS messages.
AFAIK, I have to send a GET request, and I should get back a string from the service telling me "Success" or an error code.
I'm sure the idea of sending an URL call is simple and probably asked before me many times.
But nevertheless - I'll appreciate help to start this from scratch and making this to work.
Many thanks at advance!
A lot of the Api's have documentation that'll tell you specifically what languages can interact with their api's. More than likely, vb.net isn't on that list, but you can use another language, (probably something like python) to nail down a small script, then use vb to interact with the output.

How do I find a certain application on the user's PC and transfer data to it? (VB)

I'm developing an app on the Windows desktop so Win7 users have the app, but for Win8 users I'm also developing a Metro app.
My problems are,
if a user opens a file (e.g. "Blue.xyz"), I want an app to come up that asks which environment to open it in, but first it has to find all the apps that can open the file and display them.
Then I need to pass the data as a parameter to the app Chosen.
In the .NET framework 4.5.1, I can't find the System.GetEnvironmentVariable command so I can create a common location for both environments to access. These are my options:
Comment for clarification.
Regarding your 3rd question, the function is there, just now showing on MSDN page:
After having an inspiration, I found some code that can get pretty close to what I want.
Dim filepicker As New Windows.Storage.Pickers.FileOpenPicker
CommonFolder = Windows.Storage.Pickers.PickerLocationId.DocumentsLibrary
I should just be able to tack this on the end after that:
CommonFolder.Replace("\Documents","")
and it should give me "C:\Users\someuser" and then I can add "\MyAppStorage"
Thanks for all the help though! This code isn't very clean, so feel free to edit and make it better!

understanding http ajax requests in chrome developer tools

I'm not a developer but an internet marketer - so forgive me for what is I'm sure a very basic question. In my career, it's useful when looking at website marketing to better understand what tools are used, such as Google Analytics for example. Most of the time this is quite simple - just view source and you'll see in the source code the javascript snippet.
I use the ghostery plugin to make this a bit easier, but what I don't understand about http requests is how ghostery reports a technology as being used, such as the ad server DoubleClick for example, but I can't see any code in the source code that references Doubleclick. This happens a lot but it's most often with ad server technologies.
When I look using Chrome Dev Tools, I do in fact see that the call was made by viewing the Source tab.
My question is this and it's really a general question where I'm trying to better understand how calls are made back and forth between the browser and all the various servers and services:
How, in Chrome Tools do I find what code made the call to load the resource, such as DoubleClick. I can't find anything in the source code, which tells me I don't fully understand how interactions are working.
I think from search StackOverflow that is is a xmlhttp call but I'm not sure about that, maybe it's cookies - I just don't know how this is working. At the end of the day, I don't like not understanding how this all works, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the write direction.
Thanks.
In the Network panel, find your request of interest. The Initiator column will contain a reference to the code that has initiated loading the associated resource.

Using URL Link To Send Params To VB.NET App

What I am looking for is using a URL link such as "MyApp://param=value" or "MyApp://mysite.com/?params=value" to open my application and read the params using GET. I do not want to use the click once method to do this, because I want the application to load up without the starting up bar at the topleft. I know it could be done but I could not find anywhere to do it at. You can see an example used over at curse.com where they use a link like "curse://curse.com/?etc=etc" to launch their app and download the item. Another example is with Ventrilo where you can use "ventrillo://etc" links to start vent and connect to a server. The reason I want this is because I plan to use it to give my customers a way to give their clients a way to connect to their servers with my software using a simple URL.
Since the question is about VB.NET, I’m assuming you are targeting Windows.
In that case, this can be done by registering a custom URL handler via the Windows registry.
Other operating systems have different ways of achieving this.

Getting started with Firefox API

I'm working on an university project where I need to write a program that can access Firefox internal data & events to create stats about user actions. What I would like to have access to is:
have access to HTTP and HTML data
be able to listen to HTTP + HTML + Client side scripting events
I've already done a bit a research and found few interesting things (XPCom, Mozilla ActiveX, MozRepl, directly putting Javscript files into Firefox software folder...) but my concern is to start working on this project whilst having missed something and ending up using the wrong tool.
Can you provide me with the name of the tools you know with a brief description of what they do, and what their pros and cons are?
Hopefully with enough replies we'll be able to consolidate all the useful info given into 1 authoritative edit/post/comment on this matter.
Thanks.
I believe the best way to do so will be writing your own Firefox extension. This tutorial is the best one I found to get one started with extension developement.
