So I had asked this question before but it was closed as I could not include code in time. So here it is again.
Required:
I am using Jsch v 0.1.55 for SFTP operation. I want to connect with remote server without passing password or server's key.
Setup
I setup the environment using ssh-copy-id for the remote server and providing password once. I can then login from shell using SSH without providing password or key. I wanted to do the same from Jsch but I keep getting com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail error.
Code
The latest code that I am using not after looking through other questions is:
jsch.addIdentity("/root/.ssh/id_rsa");
session = jsch.getSession(username, remoteserver, 22);
session.setServerAliveInterval(30000);
session.setConfig("PreferredAuthentications", "publickey,password");
session.setConfig("StrictHostKeyChecking", "no");
session.connect(30000);
channel = (ChannelSftp) session.openChannel("sftp");
channel.connect();
I get the exception com.jcraft.jsch.JSchException: Auth fail when doing session.connect()
I also enabled Jsch logging and get following output (a part of it is copied here)
kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none
kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none

I also tried to print some additional information from session before calling session.connect():
getHost = <IP>
getUserName = <USER>
getHostKey = null
getHostKeyAlias = null
getHostKeyRepository = []
Maybe things are not loaded correctly?
What I have tried
I had tried different ways using the jsch.addIdentity() (here I provide path to local host's private key) as well as jsch.setKnownHosts() (here I provide the path to known hosts file on local host)
When I added the known hosts using the jsch.setKnownHosts() I atleast get some different output for Jsch logs:
Host <IP> is known and matches the RSA host key

Disconnecting from <IP> port 22
Failed to connect session towards <IP>: Auth fail
This alteast matches somewhat when I tried to use SSH from shell with verbose output until the part where it fails.
I have also changed files permission to 400 but not working.
Is there anything specific required or any additional steps required here?

Ok I found the issue.
The issue was how the keys were copied. The copy-ssh-key should be executed with -i flag to use the key in identity file.
When looking at authorized key on remote server, I saw that the key copied was different from what I had for the user in local server. So after copying the key again with -i flag, I was able to login as required through Jsch.

I have built a brand-new AWS-hosted GitLab Omnibus server (14.7.3-ee) with its own domain name. I have been building this server from Terraform and Ansible for years and never had a problem. But it was based upon CentOS 8, and I’ve just updated it to use "CentOS Stream".
cat /etc/os-release
NAME="CentOS Stream"
VERSION="8"
Since then I cannot seem to get ssh working at all. And I'm pretty sure that the OS is a factor, because if I build the server with the same Ansible and Terraform, but specify Amazon Linux as the OS I don't have this problem.
I’ve created an ssh keypair, again using a script that I’ve had for years. Pasted the pub part into https://gitlab#mydomain.com/-/profile/keys and it has been saved OK. But when I try to use ssh I get the dreaded: “Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic)”. But I’m completely stumped as to what the problem is.
I’ve tried loads of troubleshooting articles and got nowhere; and I can’t even find the ssh log on the GitLab server as /var/log/auth.log doesn’t exist.
So what I'm really after is any advice on how to troubleshoot this problem further?

I have set up a Kerberos cluster with docker containers as such:
One container runs the KDC.
One container has SSH server.
One container has SSH client.
Server setup
I create a service principal host/krb5-service.myexample.com for the server, create a keytab with that principal and places it in the krb5-server container.
I also created a user in the krb-server container named "yoav" - Don't know if that's necessary..
Client setup
I also create a client principal john. Then I run kinit yoav inside the krb5-client container.
Now I try to connect with SSH from the client to the server
$ ssh yoav#krb5-server.myexample.com
That's what I get as output:
# KRB5_TRACE=/dev/stdout ssh -vvv -o PreferredAuthentications=gssapi-with-mic yoav#krb5-server.myexample.com

NOTE: I have a server and client C applications that perform Kerberos authentication, and that works fine, so the problem is not with the setup of the cluster...
Reference: You can look at the code here: https://github.com/yoav-klein/kerberos
I see several stackoverflow threads on difference between non-interactive and interactive and login and non-login shell.
However, there is no clear answer on being able to create/designate a "non-interactive login shell" for a user. I see some reference "disabling" (or lock) a user account but thats not what I want. I need to be able to do remotely something like:
ssh user#hostname somecommand
I tried the useradd "-s /usr/sbin/nologin" but its not working if I am trying to execute a command like above. I get output like (trying to use user name "test_nl" to localhost and execute command "pwd"):
my_user#ubuntu:~$ ssh -i test_nl test_nl#localhost -vvvv pwd

I still see option it triggering interactive shell. How do I disable it (or login 'non-interactively' and execute somecommand (in this case pwd). FYI my /etc/passwd is:
my_user#ubuntu:~$ cat /etc/passwd | grep test_
test_nl:x:1002:1002:,,,:/home/test_nl:/usr/sbin/nologin
my_user#ubuntu:~$
The difference between the way that OpenSSH invokes shells for interactive use and for scripting use is that interactive shells are always login shells (because the first character of argv[0] is -). When invoking a command, the shell will always be invoked with the first argument as -c instead.
There are no standard shells that allow only commands with -c but do not allow interactive use because there is no appreciable difference in security between those situations. If you wanted to have a shell that would only process scripting commands, you would have to write one, probably as a wrapper around a standard shell, and add your custom shell to /etc/shells.
OpenSSH does provide a command option in authorized_keys (see authorized_keys(5)) which allows you to specify a command to be run when a particular key is used. You can use this to allow the execution of only a single command when someone logs in with a key; this, unlike the distinction above, is an effective security control. If you want to allow multiple different commands, you'd either need to use your own restricted shell or use a key per command.
I've got the same public key distirbuted to 2 gitlab installations.
One (host: gitrepo) is a standalone installation, the second (host: 192.168.233.128) is a local vmware.
I'm using a Git Bash as a client on my Windows machine.
Checking wich key is currently represented by the agent:
$ ssh-add -L
ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABJQAAAIEApTDc2q+FKk5tmk7IOQhXXQ4OskQSiEuTv31TflRI1wrZbR2QQz/j6MCwwrP4bSF5ErU+n9DirfKRovpbf8TbVG5OXsHytuU5uKNgSqnXTcd8vpo7HhAplMblUJa3KbIfa4YXrIJcG+6FBzwJgWgoarDePtBUsICAXR7wjbR7Im0= open_ssh_key
My config has the same configuration for both hosts:
Host gitrepo
HostName gitrepo
IdentityFile C:\Users\userxx\.ssh\open_ssh_key
Host 192.168.233.128
HostName 192.168.233.128

Below is a connection debug.

git#192.168.233.128's password:
I'm not sure if the problem lies in a server's configuration. authenticated_keys holds the right key.
Compering the debugs:
receive apcket: type 7
and
receive packet: type 51
differs from each other... But I'm not sure what it indicates.
Any help, what to check, where the problem is would be appreciated.
As illustrated in this thread, you need to make sure the port 22 is mapped to your machine, in order to be able to access it.
Or you need to use the non-default port already mapped.
I try to connect to my bluemix running container but I get this error :
ssh -p 22 login#134.*.*.*
Connection to 134.*.*.* closed by remote host.
Connection to 134.*.*.* closed.
I hidden ip for security.
During docker container building, I add my ssh public key to /home/login/.ssh/authorized_keys. Then I start my container (with sshd running) and open 22 port.
In local (with docker on my server), I can connect to ssh with my private key to the container. But when I start container on Bluemix, I can't connect to ssh even after attribute public ip address and, of course, publish 22 tcp port.
To run my container that I push to ibm repo, I use ICE cli to run container with a entry point script which start all services (within sshd).
ice run --publish 8572 --publish 8787 --publish 22 --memory 2048 --name boardvisor registry.ng.bluemix.net/org/test:latest /run.sh
Then I go to bluexmix web dashboard to attribute public ip address
As I receive a response to sshd server, the container seems work and reachable but I don't understand why I can connect on my docker server but not on bluemix server.
I provide you the ssh verbose connection :

For container log, I only have this in consignation from bluemix web dashboard:

One principle in using containers is that a container should not start more than one process, in your case ssh and whatever the container is running.
Also there is another way to access your container with exec
Scince Docker 1.3 you can access an runing container with:
docker exec COMMAND
in practice for bluemix:
cf ic exec -it CONTAINER /bin/bash
this starts the binary bash with an absolute path (/bin/bash part) and attaches the tty interactively + keeps connection open (-it part).
More infos: https://www.ng.bluemix.net/docs/containers/container_cli_reference_cfic.html#container_cli_reference_cfic__exec
Since the container works and it is reachable but you can't access it only on Bluemix, I suggest you to open a support request directly from your Bluemix console using the support/help widget or sending an email to support#bluemix.net: in this way you'll involve IBM Containers support team in checking and fix this issue. They will be able to perform in-depth investigation of your error.
