I'd like to know if there is any way to search for a procedure in all the databases of a server (there are only SQL Server databases on that server).
So far I've only found how to find a stored procedure in a certain database with Object_id(), but it would take too long for me to manually search each database by hand. I'd also like to see in which database is the stored procedure applied.
Code I've found so far:
select *
from MyDataBase.sys.objects
where object_id = object_id(N'MyProcedure')
You can try this code
CREATE TABLE #SPs (db_name varchar(100), name varchar(100), object_id int)
EXEC sp_msforeachdb 'USE [?]; INSERT INTO #SPs select ''?'', name, object_id from sys.procedures'
SELECT * FROM #SPs

I have a Table in my Database Which have name of all the Database of my Server
Table Look like
create Table #db_name_list(Did INT IDENTITY(1,1), DNAME NVARCHAR(100))
INSERT INTO #db_name_list
SELECT 'db_One ' UNION ALL
SELECT 'db_Two' UNION ALL
SELECT 'db_Three' UNION ALL
SELECT 'db_four' UNION ALL
SELECT 'db_five'
select * from #db_name_list
I have so many SP in my Database..Which uses multiple table and Join Them..
At Present I am using the SQL code like
Select Column from db_One..Table1
Left outer join db_two..Table2
on ....some Condition ....
REQUIREMENT
But I do not want to HARDCODE the DATABASE Name ..
I want store DataBase name in Variable and use that .
Reason :: I want to restore same Database with Different name and want to Run those SP..At Present we Cant Do ,Because I have used db_One..Table1
or db_two..Table2
I want some thing like ...
/SAMPLE SP/
CREATE PROCEDURE LOAD_DATA
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE #dbname nvarchar(500)
set #dbname=( SELECT DNAME FROM #db_name_list WHERE Did=1)
set #dbname2=( SELECT DNAME FROM #db_name_list WHERE Did=2)
PRINT #DBNAME
SELECT * FROM #dbname..table1
/* or */
SELECT * FROM #dbname2.dbo.table1
END
i.e using Variable Instead of Database name ..
But it thow error
"Incorrect syntax near '.'."
P.S This was posted by some else on msdn but the answer there was not clear & I had the same kind of doubt. So please help
You can't use a variable like this in a static sql query. You have to use the variable in dynamic sql instead, in order to build the query you want to execute, like:
DECLARE #sql nvarchar(500) = 'SELECT * FROM ' + #dbname + '.dbo.mytable'
EXEC(#sql);
There seem to be a couple of options for you depending on your circumstances.
1. Simple - Generalise your procedures
Simply take out the database references in your stored procedure, as there is no need to have an explicit reference to the database if it is running against the database it is stored in. Your select queries will look like:
SELECT * from schema.table WHERE x = y
Rather than
SELECT * from database.schema.table WHERE x = y
Then just create the stored procedure in the new database and away you go. Simply connect to the new database and run the SP. This method would also allow you to promote the procedure to being a system stored procedure, which would mean they were automatically available in every database without having to run CREATE beforehand. For more details, see this article.
2. Moderate - Dynamic SQL
Change your stored procedure to take a database name as a parameter, such as this example:
CREATE PROCEDURE example (#DatabaseName VARCHAR(200))
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE #SQL VARCHAR(MAX) = 'SELECT * FROM ['+#DatabaseName+'].schema.table WHERE x = y'
EXEC (#SQL)
END
Suppose I have two databases named DB1 and DB2. In DB1, there is a table named Student, In DB2, there is a stored procedure named SP1. In SP1, I am selecting data of Student Table using below query :
Select *from DB1.dbo.Student.
I have more than 300 stored procedures having above said cross database communication. Now, I want to change my database from DB1 to DB3 that is identical to DB1 from data and schema perspective.
For this, I also have to modify all 300 stored procedures that are having fully-qualified database name. Now, the query will likely to be as follows :
Select *from DB3.dbo.Student
I don't want to change all stored procedure to point DB3 now, also don't want to change my queries written in stored procedure into dynamic SQL (I know this can be done by creating dynamic SQL).
Is it possible if We run DB1.dbo.Student, It will redirect to DB3.dbo.Student. Any intermediate layer or any SQL setting.
It'll be very big help for me. Thanks In Advance !!
If the purpose of your database renaming is to migrate a database, then why not rename the databases themselves?
e.g. say rename DB1 to DB1_old and then rename DB3 to DB1
I would simply script out all stored procedures using SQL Server script generator tool. Then do a find replace on the script and find text ‘DB1.dbo.’ and replace with ‘DB3.dbo.’
In the future you might want to consider using synonyms to reference external tables then you would only have to update the synonyms instead of all of your procedures. Please see following MSDN article on synonyms:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187552.aspx
Example use of synonym:
USE [DB1]
GO
-- Create a synonym for table A located in DB2.
CREATE SYNONYM [dbo].[External_TableA] FOR [DB2].[dbo].[TableA]
GO
-- Synonym is pointing to TableA in DB2 , select statement will return data from DB2 tabla A.
SELECT *
FROM [External_TableA]
GO
-- Point the Synonym to same table but on DB3
DROP SYNONYM [dbo].[External_TableA]
CREATE SYNONYM [dbo].[External_TableA] FOR [DB3].[dbo].[TableA]
GO
-- No update was needed on views or stored procedure.
-- Synonym is pointing to TableA in DB3 , select statement will return data from DB3 tabla A.
SELECT *
FROM [External_TableA]
The follow query will generate the required DROP and CREATE script to remap your synonyms from the old database to the new database.
DECLARE #oldDB NVARCHAR(100) = 'DB2';
DECLARE #newDB NVARCHAR(100) = 'DB3';
SELECT 'DROP SYNONYM [dbo].[' + name + ']' AS [Drop Script]
,'CREATE SYNONYM [dbo].[' + name + '] FOR ' + REPLACE(base_object_name, #oldDB, #newDB) AS CreateScript
FROM sys.synonyms
ORDER BY name
its better to use USE Keyword
use [database name you want to access]
Queries and stored procedure you want to use
GO
eg
use [db1]
select *from yourTableName
exec yourStoredProcedure parm1,parm2,....
Go
EDIT: The things I've tried below came directly from the alleged duplicate. The solutions actually do work fine with a user defined sp (and probably most system sp's), but for whatever reason it doesn't work with this one.
I can run exec sp_showpendingchanges on the distribution publication database without any issues. However I want to capture the results in a table
I've tried:
SELECT * INTO #tmpTable
FROM OPENROWSET('SQLNCLI', 'Server=SERVER; Trusted_Connection=yes;',
'EXEC sp_showpendingchanges')
and:
SELECT * INTO #tmpTable
FROM OPENQUERY(SERVER, 'exec sp_showpendingchanges')
Both of these statements return an error that says: Invalid object name 'sysmergepublications'.
I tried to specify the initial catalog in the connection string and even tried adding a USE statement in the last parameter of each statement (i.e. I used an embedded EXEC statement with double-single quotes and all that). But I still end up with the same error.
So how can I get the results from exec sp_showpendingchanges into a temporary table, and preferably without having to define the table myself? If all else fails I will make a program in C#, but really hoping there's a simpler way to just do this with just SQL.
Here is a working example
You create a table
DECLARE #result_table TABLE
(
destination_server SYSNAME ,
pub_name SYSNAME ,
destination_db_name SYSNAME ,
is_dest_subscriber BIT ,
article_name SYSNAME ,
pending_deletes INT ,
pending_ins_and_upd INT
)
execute the script
INSERT INTO #result_table
EXEC sp_showpendingchanges
view the results
SELECT * FROM #result_table
I read your question but definetly cannot understand what the problem to create temp table. Anyway, if you can execute SP but get an error when you do it through linkedserver or openrowset - than problem is in permissions.
Check permissions on sysmergepublications table. If user, which you use for linked server or openrowset, has no grant on do select this table you need to add this permission to user.
I hope it will help you.
This is my first time posting on SO, so please go easy!
I'm attempting to write a SQL script that queries the same table for a list of databases in a single SQL Server instance.
I have successfully queried the list of databases that I required using the following, and inserting this data into a temp table.
Select name Into #Versions
From sys.databases
Where name Like 'Master%'
Master is suffixed with numerical values to identify different environments.
Select * From #Versions
Drop Table #Versions
The table name I am trying to query, is the same in each of the databases, and I want to extract the newest value from this table and insert it into the temp table for each of the database names returned.
I have tried researching this but to no avail. I am fairly comfy with SQL but I fear I could be out of my depth here.
You can do the following. Once you have the list of your databases, you can build up the query (you need to edit it for your purpose).
Select name Into #Versions
From sys.databases
Where name Like 'test%'
declare #sql as varchar(max) = ''
select #sql = #sql + 'INSERT INTO sometable SELECT TOP 1 * FROM ' + name + '..sourcetable ORDER BY somedate DESC; '
FROM #Versions
exec (#sql)
Drop Table #Versions
Look at The undocumented sp_MSforeachdb procedure and here
I believe what I am attempting to achieve may only be done through the use of Dynamic SQL. However, I have tried a couple of things without success.
I have a table in database DB1 (lets say DB1.dbo.table1, in a MS SQL server) that contains the names of other databases in the server (DB2,DB3, etc). Now, all the dbs listed in that table contain a particular table (lets call it desiredTable) which I want to query. So what I'm looking for is a way of creating a stored procedure/script/whatever that queries DB1.dbotable1 for the other DBs and then run a statement on each of the dbs retrieved, something like:
#DBNAME = select dbName from DB1.dbo.table1
select value1 from #DBNAME.dbo.desiredTable
Is that possible? I'm planning on running the sp/script in various systems DB1.dbo.table1 being a constant.
You need to build a query dinamically and then execute it. Something like this:
DECLARE #MyDynamicQuery VARCHAR(MAX)
DECLARE #MyDynamicDBName VARCHAR(20)
SELECT #MyDynamicDBName = dbName
FROM DB1.dbo.table1
SET #MyDynamicQuery = 'SELECT value1 FROM ' + #MyDynamicDBName + '.dbo.desiredTable'
EXEC(#MyDynamicQuery)
You can use the undocumented stored procedure, sp_MSForEachDB. The usual warnings about using an undocumented stored procedure apply though. Here's an example of how you might use it in your case:
EXEC sp_MSForEachDB 'SELECT value1 FROM ?.dbo.desiredTable'
Notice the use of ? in place of the DB name.
I'm not sure how you would limit it to only DBs in your own table. If I come up with something, then I'll post it here.
