CMake SWIG dependency on headers of external project - cmake

I have a project "A" that depends on another project "B".
ProjectB installs some headers, for example B1.h, B2.h.
ProjectA tries to create a Python wrapper of B1.h and B2.h, using SWIG.
ProjectA uses :
ExternalProject_Add(ProjectB ...) to compile and install ProjectB somwhere into the binary dir.
Swig_Add_Library(ProjectB ...) to create the Python wrapper ; this command creates a target _ProjectB.
I want to be sure that B1.h, B2.h are installed before SWIG runs, thus I added the following command :
add_dependencies(_ProjectB ProjectA)
On Windows, this works fine.
However on Linux, the add_dependencies command is not taken into account, which gives :
.../ProjectA.i: 111: Error: Unable to find 'B1.h'
.../ProjectA.i: 112: Error: Unable to find 'B2.h'
I am sure that the include dir given to SWIG is correct: indeed, when I run make for the second time, this works because ProjectB was successfully installed by the first call to make.
I use CMake 3.13.5.
Any help would be great !

I found a workaround : on Linux, I use : add_dependencies(ProjectB_swig_compilation ProjectA)
However, the target ProjectB_swig_compilation does not exist on Windows (I don't understand why since I use the same version of CMake on both Linux and Windows).
Eventually, here is what I did in my CMakeLists.txt :

add_dependencies(_ProjectB ProjectA)
else ()
add_dependencies(ProjectB_swig_compilation ProjectA)

CMake linking error at runtime from other lib in subdirectory

I am trying to get a project running that is using dynamic openCASCADE libraries.
So first i set up a minimal test project using the following CMake file:
...
include_directories(/home/user/occt/build_r/include/opencascade/)
add_executable(testOCCT
main.cpp
step2stl.cpp
)
find_package(OpenCASCADE REQUIRED NO_DEFAULT_PATH)
set(OCCT_LIBS TKMesh; TKSTEP; TKSTL; TKXSBase; TKernel)
target_link_libraries(testOCCT ${OCCT_LIBS})
This is working as it should.
Now i want to link the same libraries to another library that is used in a larger project.
For the project there are 3 CMake files, one for the project and two subdirectory, one for the executable one for the myLib, which are added by add_subdirectory().
In the CMake file for myLib which is inside one of the subdirectories I've added:
...
include_directories(/home/user/occt/build_r/include/opencascade/)
...
add_library(${MY_LIB_NAME} SHARED ${my_sources})
find_package(OpenCASCADE REQUIRED NO_DEFAULT_PATH)
set(OCCT_LIBS TKMesh; TKSTEP; TKSTL; TKXSBase; TKernel)
target_link_libraries(${MY_LIB_NAME} ${OCCT_LIBS})
so basically the same as in the test project.
However now I get an error (at runtime):
symbol lookup error: myLib.so: undefined symbol: _ZN24BRepMesh_IncrementalMeshC1ERK12TopoDS_Shapedbdb
Ok, so i found the problem myself. The reason it did not work was not because of CMake, but that there was some other version of the libraries installed over the packet manager, which then got loaded instead of the right one.
purging those libs solved the problem.
However what I still don't get is why it loaded the correct library version on the test project and the wrong on the other (both tested on the same machine)

cmake find_package unable to find Eigen3Config.cmake spectra Windows

I am using Eigen3 with spectra (https://spectralib.org/), a library built on top of Eigen. Spectra uses find_package to find Eigen, and comes up with the error:
Could not find a package configuration file provided by "Eigen3" with any
of the following names:
Eigen3Config.cmake
eigen3-config.cmake
Looking through the directory of Eigen, I found that there were no files by those names, but rather one called Eigen3Config.cmake.in. I tried copying the file and renaming it Eigen3Config.cmake, but that gave me a different error of
find_package Error reading CMake code from "C:/Program Files
(x86)/Eigen3/cmake/Eigen3Config.cmake".
which was somewhat expected, but it does tell me that it can at least find the directory where Eigen3Config.cmake.in is. I'm assuming that either find_package is supposed to use Eigen3Config.cmake.in, or Eigen3Config.cmake.in is supposed to generate Eigen3Config.cmake, but i'm very new to cmake, so i'm not sure. How do I fix this?
There is no need to build/install Eigen to use it if you include it manually, as done in the getting started example (https://eigen.tuxfamily.org/dox/GettingStarted.html#title0)
But in order to be found by CMake, you will need to build / install it, as explained in the INSTALL file. https://gitlab.com/libeigen/eigen/-/blob/master/INSTALL
Usually, your error is followed by an hint asking you to set the variable Eigen3_DIR (or something similar) to point the build/install dir of the target project (Eigen3 here). It appears typically when you have built but not installed the project.
So:
Build Eigen
Install it (optional)
For spectra set the cmake var Eigen3_DIR to /path/to/Eigen/build . (if eigen not install or still not found)
These steps worked for me:
Install Eigen
Create a build directory for Eigen
cd into the build directory created
run "cmake ../"Your Eigen Source Directory""
After this is done, in your CMakeLists.txt of your project, you'll want to add "find_package( Eigen3 REQUIRED)" and "include_directories( ${EIGEN3_INCLUDE_DIR})".

CMake - how to block executing installation scripts during packaging?

My CMakeLists.txt file contains commands, which should be executed by make install, and all this works fine. The sample CMakeLists.txt below is a short excerpt from my actual CMake file (the tm0001.cpp content is not important here - it might be any C++ program):

I see the message command is executed by make package as well, which is not I want.
How to tell CMake not to execute installation scripts by the make package command? I couldn't find any way to do that with the CMake if command.
As it already said in the comment, it's an extremely bad idea to "work w/ systemd" (and doing anything not related to build or packaging of your project) from install commands. The install command (even SCRIPT and CODE signatures) are intended to be used for install actions and not for any other side effects.
The correct way to act here is to produce a native package (DEB/RPM) w/ post-install script, where using the system-provided macros (like described here), you can install your package properly. Take a look to CPACK_DEBIAN_PACKAGE_CONTROL_EXTRA for the way to provide package install actions.
The other bad thing is to use the hardcoded path (/usr/bin/). And BTW, a better place for the (pure) daemon app I suggest /usr/sbin/. Take a look to GNUInstallDirs module shipped w/ CMake for further references.
What I did was to specify install commands with CODE/SCRIPT as separate component e.g. install(CODE ... COMPONENT post-install).
Then also added other non-code install commands as a different component e.g. install(FILES ... COMPONENT files-install)
The CPack then needs to be configured to package only files-install component (solution to this can be found easily - hint: use CPACK_COMPONENTS_ALL_IN_ONE_PACKAGE, CPACK_COMPONENTS_ALL and CPACK_(RPM/DEB/...)_COMPONENT_INSTALL variables).
Of course then the resulting package won't run these CODE components during installing the package - they need to be added separately as a post install script.
I'm answering my own question, because the existing answer doesn't address my main problem. I couldn't find any way (on the CMake level) to block install commands from running during make package - even the postinst script is called by this command.
Fortunately, I could modify the postinst script itself to do nothing in case it's called not by the dpkg:

It's a trick of course, but it worked for me.

CMake does not compĂ­le Qt5 generate from buildroot

I generate a tarball with Qt5 using Buildroot 2014.05.
When I uncompressed this files to compile my project using CMake I receive the following error message:
CMake Error at <project> /sysroot/usr/lib/cmake/Qt5Core/Qt5CoreConfig.cmake:27 (message):
The imported target "Qt5::Core" references the file
"<project>/host/usr/bin/qmake"
but this file does not exist. Possible reasons include:
* The file was deleted, renamed, or moved to another location.
* An install or uninstall procedure did not complete successfully.
* The installation package was faulty and contained
"/<project>/sysroot/usr/lib/cmake/Qt5Core/Qt5CoreConfigExtras.cmake"
but not all the files it references.
I'm using the cmake configs under
<project>/sysroot/usr/lib/cmake/
and my CMakeLists.txt
set(CMAKE_PREFIX_PATH <project>/sysroot/usr/lib/cmake/QtWidgets/ )
find_package(Qt5Widgets REQUIRED)
Any suggestion?
Buildroot 2014.05 does not have qmake to install
This part: I generate a tarball with Qt5 using Buildroot does make much sense. What do you mean exactly by this ?
If by this you mean that you tarball'ed the contents of output/host/ (which is the toolchain and all the libraries that you need to build applications for your target), then beware that it is not relocatable. So it has to be installed in the same location as the one it was generated in. So for now, if you want to do this, you should set the BR2_HOST_DIR configuration option to something like /opt/<something>/, and then tarball that up and uncompress it on the other machines where you want to use the toolchain.
It's in our TODO-list to make this relocatable.

Use external DLL in cmake build

I'm working on the cmake scripts for my project and I've run into a problem:
My project uses a 3rd party library (FreeImage), which has its own Makefile-based build system. I can build FreeImage just fine by simply running "make" (I'm using gnuwin32), which will build FreeImage using MinGW and produce:
FreeImage.lib
FreeImage.dll
Now my problem is twofold:
I want to execute "make" from my cmake script.
I want to link to the import lib (FreeImage.lib), and also make sure the DLL gets copied to the correct place so the EXE will run.
I know how to link to the LIB file, but I'm lost on the rest.
The folder structure is like this:
MyProject # main directory
MyProject/Libs/FreeImage # FreeImage root directory
MyProject/Libs/FreeImage/Dist # This is where FreeImage outputs go (LIB and DLL)
BTW: I'm running on Windows 7. I plan to build my project both with MSVC and MinGW.

I'm now trying to use ExternalProject_Add like so:

This gets me part of the way there, but doesn't totally work... it tries to configure things for me and tries to use nmake... ugh
In my opinion, there are two options:
In case you have put your FreeImage sources in your projects' source-tree, the easiest option may be to use the execute_process() command. Assuming FreeImage is in your projects' source-tree in "3rdparty/FreeImage/" you can do something like,
execute_process( COMMAND make WORKING_DIRECTORY ${PROJECT_SOURCE_DIR}/3rdParty/FreeImage )
Optionally, you can copy the dll from 3rdParty/FreeImage/bin into you own bin directory. And then you can write a FreeImageConfig.cmake for importing the library:
add_library( FreeImage IMPORTED )
set_target_properties( FreeImage PROPERTIES IMPORTED_LOCATION ${PROJECT_SOURCE_DIR}/3rdParty/FreeImage/lib )
...
The other option is to make use of the ExternalProject module. You can also take a look at this article from Kitware for an overview of this module. In essence, you specify the full chain of commands needed to get the source, configure the build, build the source and install it. All in your own CMakeLists.txt
