I'm not sure if this is the right platform for this question, but if it's not, I'd be happy to post elsewhere.
I've ssh'd into a server to run some stuff in R, and now that it's running, I'm not able to detach the screen using "ctrl+a d". When I type ctrl+a d, I get either "^A d", or nothing.
I found this post, which suggested that I open a second terminal window and remotely detach the screen, but when I typed in "screen -ls" I got back "No Sockets found in /run/screen/S-user", which is strange considering that a smaller version of this script ran perfectly/saved objects to Cyberduck as instructed, so I know my script is running.
For context, I'm running a Mac OSX, and the server I'm ssh'ing into is a linux.

Ok so I want to get a virtual machine with Windows so I can download applications only on Windows (Not on OSX (I'm on Big Sur 11.2.3 by the way)), so I downloaded VirtualBox, then downloaded the Windows thing which apparently I have to (as seen in one of the pics) (you can tell I have hardly any experience with vms), then I created a new vm in the VirtualBox app, and left all the default settings except for the type of hard drive (which is also in one of the pictures), then I clicked Start and it asked me to add a 'virtual optical disk file', so I clicked on the folder button then clicked add in the top left, and it gave me this error code:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine w10.
The VM session was aborted.
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)

as you can also see in one of the pictures below. Also, when I leave the screen for a couple of minutes right before I click on the previously mentioned add button, this appears:
but I tried just leaving it to load, and nothing happened. I have tried uninstalling using the uninstall tool twice, rebooting my Mac, etc etc, and yes I have allowed everything I need to in the Security settings. I'm not installing it on a moderator account, but the Windows 10 virtual optical disk file is in Documents which the account I'm on has read and write access to, and obviously the actual VM is in applications.

I came across exactly same issue, where clicking on add to choose image was crashing the dialog. This issue persists in the latest version of Virtual Box for Mac.
I could figure out couple of ways to avoid clicking on Add button to choose image.
First Option:
Steps:
Click on Settings to open settings window for your VM.
Choose Storage
Select Empty disc and choose Disk image by clicking small disc icon in the Attributes section. Please follow the image to have visual instructions.
Second Option:
Steps:
Click on VM's Normal start
Once you get the option to choose image, simply cancel the dialog.
Now click on the small disc icon in the bottom of VM's dialog to choose the image.

I had the same message because of permissions at directories where the hard disks were stored in. So, just execute VirtualBox 'As Administrator' and all run well.

I tried a few things as suggested on youtube, but nothing worked. finally, I just upgraded the extension and it worked.
I use remote shh interpreter in PyCharm regularly, using the configured deployment. I often run remote programs from PyCharm GUI (using F5 key), that takes hours to complete (e.g. training a deep net). This unfortunately means that any network outage causes running script to exit and I have to run the script over again. Is there a way to detach the running script so it keeps running? In the sense similar to what screen or nohup is doing? I know I can run it in screen manually via ssh, but it is a bit inconvenient.
Ok. I found out that this feature is not implemented yet. There is however a suggested workaround
Symptoms:
When starting Pycharm:
the keyboard seems completely unresponsive
the cursor disappears
menu items with keyboard bindings are greyed out
text selection still works with the mouse, but the cursor is not visible
This may be related to another SO question "pycharm with ideavim occasionally makes the keyboard unresponsive" but ideavim is not involved.

Further Details
switching between tabs in Pycharm doesn't fix this
no cursor is visible in the console, python, or editor windows
switching to another X-window (xclock) doesn't help
switching to another non-X-window doesn't help either
re-starting Pycharm doesn't help
sudo ibus restart, see issue 78860 on my flavor of linux doesn't do anything
Working fix:
Turn off the 'Tip of the day' start-up dialogue box, then re-start Pycharm.
I can confirm that it works as a fix to my specific problem.
It sounds like there's a known problem with the cursor disappearing: see issue 65637 and issue 79312. Based on my experience it seems that this problem can also be caused when Pycharm pop-up windows steal focus.
Hope this is useful to some other folks out there.
I am using pycharm in ubuntu and this thing worked for me. Just run this command in terminal. I don't even restarted. It worked.
$ ibus-daemon -rd
I have an issue that presented itself with an earlier post: cmd.exe will not recognize command
I fixed to problem by unchecking the prefer 32-bit box and if worked.
Now I am trying to run the application and the problem represents itself.
Is there to fix this simply?
I don't know how the problem was "fixed" using that method earlier. The reason why that error message comes up is, by default, telnet is not enabled.
You have to enable telnet on the computer by going to start > control panel > programs and features > turn windows feature on or off > check telnet client. The command should execute successfully after that.
I have installed (and re-installed) Octave 3 times on Windows 8, and I still can't get it right. The first and most obvious problem is that the prompt is missing; the screen only shows the flashing underscore that follows the prompt. This is not a major problem since the system properly responds to commands.
The major problem is that Octave crashes whenever it encounters a syntax error, instead of politely giving a diagnostic. This makes for extremely tedious software development.
Is there a way around this problem, or do we just have to wait for one side or the other to come up with an accommodation?
I encountered the same problem. I solved it by this:
create a shortcut to octave.exe, then right click->property-> change the "target" to something like:
C:\Program Files\Octave\Octave3.6.*_gcc*.*.*\bin\octave.exe -i --line-editing
Then it won't exit if u have syntax errors.
I don't understand the meaning of the parameters yet.

Type octave --help can check the meaning of parameters.
-i also --interactvie, to force Octave interactive behavior.
Maybe Octave run at non-interactive mode at default, that means prompt should not be shown and it should terminate immediately when encountered error when reading a file.
I don't know if this will solve your problem, or if this is too bloated of a solution for you, but I use Octave on Windows 7 through Cygwin without any problems.
If you can't get Octave to run on Windows 8, you may consider running Octave through Linux via computer virtualization technology (virtual computer). Two, off the top of my head that you could use are VirtualBox by Oracle or VMWare Player
Once you have it installed, you can go to any number of sites that have pre-built Linux images that you can download and then run inside of Windows 8.X. Do a Google search of for 'Virtualbox images' or as 'VMWare appliances'. You can then download and use that to run the lastest version of Octave. I hope that helps.
