I am working in SWI-Prolog.
We have been asked to do some 'pure logic' implementations, and to do so, some modules have to be added to the code (in order to control the execution of the code). Let us take one of them:

My code works fine without it, but when I add it (at the beginning of it), it fails with the message: Arguments are not sufficiently instantiated.
I have also tried adding :- module(_,_,[]). in an empty file and still fails with the same error; so it is not a problem of my code, but a problem of the module.
I have searched for the error, but I only find it related to a different problem: usually using some variable before declaring it, like in (Prolog - Arguments are not sufficiently instantiated).

I state that I am a beginner, here is my problem.
My model works perfectly when I run it with a normal simulation. Now I'm trying to optimize some parameters using the optimization experiment, I've followed all the steps of the official tutorial, but it doesn't work because I get "Exception during discrete event execution:
Truncated class file". The strange thing is that, looking into the console displaying the error, I see that some lines are referred to an old version of my model, for example:

at coffe_maker.Main._m1_1_delayTime_xjal(Main.java:14070)
The current model's name is coffee_maker_v2_6 so I don't understand why I get this kind of error, do you know if it is normal? What am I doing wrong?
The most likely cause is that you have Java code left in an 'unused' configuration of a Delay block's "Delay time" expression (e.g., it now has a static value but you had Java code in the now-switched-out dynamic value).
Unfortunately, AnyLogic sometimes still includes the switched-out code in the compiled class, and this can sometimes cause strange runtime errors such as that one.
If this does look to be the case, temporarily switch to the offending switched-out configuration and delete it before switching back to the correct one.
I have resolved: the problem was that, in every delay block of my model, the delay time was linked with a database reference (type code), now I am trying by tyiping the probability distributions in the delays directly and now the optimization works
While trying to learn Frege I copied some code from Dierk's Real World Frege to the online REPL an tried to execute it (see also How to execute a compiled code snipped in Frege online repl). The scripts I've tried don't compile :-(
What am I doing wrong?

It is unavoidable that over the course of more than a year, an evolving language (and its libraries) change so that older code will not compile anymore.
It would be nice, if we could see an example, instead of a generalization like "most".
The next best thing would be to have an issue in Dierks project that points to the error(s).
But the very best would be en effort to find out what is wrong. This would also intensify your learning process.

The error in:
println ( 2 *-3 )
stems indeed from a syntactical change.
It is, as of recently, demanded that adjacent operators be separated by at least one space.
Hence
println (2 * -3)
However, the error message you got here was:
can't resolve `*-`, did you mean `-` perhaps?
which could have triggered the idea that it tries to interpret *- as a single operator.
The other error in ValuesAndVariables1.fr is indeed a show stopper for a beginner. The background is that we have one pi that has type Double and one that has type Float and potentially many more through type class Floating, so one needs to tell which one to print.
The following will work:

the online REPL at http://try.frege-lang.org is currently based on Frege V3.23.370-g898bc8c . Dierk's code examples are based on V3.21.500-g88270a0 (which can be seen in the gradle build file).
It seems that the Frege developers decided to change the Frege syntax slightly between those versions. THe result is that you will not be able to run these code snippets in the online REPL anymore.
First, apologies for the generic title - if anyone can suggest a better one, I'd be happy to change it, but right now, I have no clue where to start.
I have a workbook utilizing a DLL to access a data provider (Bloomberg), and the requirements to get it to work correctly are quite tricky. Furthermore, deployment is a nightmare, since users might need to reference the DLL themselves.
Naturally, I first check wether the library is referenced, before testing the library itself.
Here's my code (which is working as intended) :

As you can see, if the reference to the DLL is set, I proceed checking if the library works as intended (this has a lot of external factors at play, such as wether the server-application is running, the user is logged in, etc.) You can think of this as a simple ON-ERROR-GOTO-wrapped call to the dll.
I am forced to move the actual test of the functionality to another sub, as called from the second if-block. If I have no (or a broken) reference to the dll, even though the library will not be called itself, I will get a User-defined Error. If I move the exact same code to another sub, it will work perfectly.
Finally, my question:
What happens when I run my VBA code, why do I get a (i think) runtime error during compile time? How can my code be so dependend on external factors, that it can't even get to the point of failing?
What this behavior demonstrates is that VBA compiles separate subroutines separately and at different times. I had a similar situation when I was trying to resolve references on behalf of the users (solving a versioning problem, which I got to work, but then abandoned as not worth the trouble).
When you are ready to enter a subroutine, it interprets only as much as it needs to, and you could get a compile time error then, even though to you it seems like you are at run time.
The error you are actually getting is probably a 429 Automation error or something similar. You would get that if you have a broken link (dll moved, deleted, or not registered). What I remember from my project, is that I could reliably handle it if a good reference was saved in the file, or no reference was saved, but if a bad reference was saved, the code had to be isolated similar to what you found. I think I had mine in a separate class, but the principle is the same.
I think this "interpret only as much as necessary" is considered a feature of VBA. You can run a certain section of code, even if you have compile errors elsewhere. This can be useful when you only have a partially written functions or other half-finished stuff, or if you open the file on a computer without some referenced software installed. It lets at least some of the functionality still work.
I am making my existing .Net Application Scriptable for non programming users. I added lua, it works like a charm. Then I added debug functionality(pause/continue/step) via debug.sethook. It works also like a charm.
Now I realize that my Application needs edit and continue feature like Visual Studio has it. You pause the execution can edit the code and then continue from your current state with changes applied. This feature is very important to me. I thought this would be easy to do for scripting languages.
Everywhere I read that scripting languages can do this. But even after spending hours of searching I haven't found an Lua implementation yet. It hasn't to be Lua but hot swapping code in Lua would be my first choice.
How can the ability for the user be offered to pause and edit the script and than continue the execution with changes applied?
NOTE: It doesn't have to be Lua every scripting language would be okay

I will use https://github.com/frabert/NetLua Its a very cool, well written 100% C# Lua Interpreter. It is generating an AST tree first and then directly executing it.
The parser needs to be modified. In Parser.cs public Ast.Block ParseString(string Chunk) there is a parseTree generated first. parseTree.tokens[i].locations are containing the exact position of each token. The Irony.Parsing.ParseTree is then parsed again and is converted to a NetLua.Ast.Block but the location information is missed. I will need to change that so later I will know which Statement is in which line.
Now each Statement from the AST tree is directly executed via EvalBlock. Debug functionality (like I have in my C Binding lua Interpreter DynamicLua via debug.setHook) needs to be added. This can be done in LuaInterpreter.cs internal static LuaArguments EvalBlock(`. Pause/continue/step functions should be no problem. I also can now add current line Highlighting because each statement contains position line information.
When the execution is paused and the code was edited the current LuaContxct is saved. It contains all variables. Also the last Statement with the last execution line is saved.
Now the code String is parsed again to a new AST tree. It gets executed. But all statements are skipped until the saved statement with the line statement is reached. The saved LuaContext is restored and execution can continue with all changes applied.
New variables could be also added after the last executed line, because a new NetLua.Ast.Assignment Statement could just add a new variable to the current LuaContext and everything should just work fine.
Will this work?
I think this is quite challenging and triicky to do right.
Probably the only way you could do that is if you recompile the chunk of code completely. In a function this would mean the whole function regardless of where edit is in function. Then call the function again. Clearly the function must be re-entrant else its side effects (like having incremented a global or upvalue) would have to be undone which isn't possible. If it is not reentrant it will still work just not give expected results (for example if the function increments a global variable by 1 calling it again will result in the global variable having been increased by 2 once the function finally returns).
But finding the lines in the script where the chunknstarts and ends would be tricky if truly generic solution. For specific solution you would have to post specific examples of scripts you want to run and examples of lines you would want to edit. If the whole user script gets recompiled and rerun then this is not a problem, but the side effects is still an issue, examples could help there too.
Theoretically, the end user should never see internal errors. But in practice, theory and practice differ. So the question is what to show the end user. Now, for the totally non-technical user, you want to show as little as possible ("click here to submit a bug report" kind of things), but for more advanced users, they will want to know if there is a work around, if it's been known for a while, etc. So you want to include some sort of info about what's wrong as well.
The classic way to do this is either an assert with a filename:line-number or a stack trace with the same. Now this is good for the developer because it points him right at the problem; however it has some significant downsides for the user, particularly that it's very cryptic (e.g. unfriendly) and code changes change the error message (Googling for the error only works for this version).
I have a program that I'm planning on writing where I want to address these issues. What I want is a way to attach a unique identity to every assert in such a way that editing the code around the assert won't alter it. (For example, if I cut/paste it to another file, I want the same information to be displayed) Any ideas?
One tack I'm thinking of is to have an enumeration for the errors, but how to make sure that they are never used in more than one place?
(Note: For this question, I'm only looking at errors that are caused by coding errors. Not things that could legitimately happen like bad input. OTOH those errors may be of some interest to the community at large.)
(Note 2: The program in question would be a command line app running on the user's system. But again, that's just my situation.)
(Note 3: the target language is D and I'm very willing to dive into meta-programming. Answers for other languages more than welcome!)
(note 4: I explicitly want to NOT use actual code locations but rather some kind of symbolic names for the errors. This is because if code is altered in practically any way, code locations change.)
Interesting question. A solution I have used several times is this: If it's a fatal error (non-fatal errors should give the user a chance to correct the input, for example), we generate a file with a lot of relevant information: The request variables, headers, internal configuration information and a full backtrace for later debugging. We store this in a file with a generated unique filename (and with the time as a prefix).
For the user, we present a page which explains that an unrecoverable error has occurred, and ask that they include the filename as a reference if they would like to report the bug. A lot easier to debug with all this information from the context of the offending request.
In PHP the debug_backtrace() function is very useful for this. I'm sure there's an equivalent for your platform.
Also remember to send relevant http headers: Probably: HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error
Given a sensible format of the error report file, it's also possible to analyze the errors that users have not reported.
Write a script to grep your entire source tree for uses of these error codes, and then complain if there are duplicates. Run that script as part of your unit tests.
I know nothing about your target language, but this is an interesting question that I have given some thought to and I wanted to add my two cents.
My feeling has always been that messages for hard errors and internal errors should be as useful as possible for the developer to identify the problem & fix it quickly. Most users won't even look at this error message, but the highly sophisticated end users (tech support people perhaps) will often get a pretty good idea what the problem is and even come up with novel workarounds by looking at highly detailed error messages. The key is to make those error messages detailed without being cryptic, and this is more an art than a science.
An example from a Windows program that uses an out-of-proc COM server. If the main program tries to instantiate an object from the COM server and fails with the error message:

99% of users will see this and think it is written in Greek. A tech support person may quickly realize that they need ro re-register the COM server. And the developer will know exactly what went wrong.
In order to associate some contextual information with the assertion, in my C++ code I will often use a simple string with the name of the method, or something else that makes it clear where the error occured (I apologize for answering in a language you didn't ask about):
