I have a zip msbuild ZipDirectory task that generate a 1kb file sometimes although the expected output should be greater than 20 MB. Normally when I detect that problem and rerun the project the output is correct. The issue is that I have to manually and visually check the result. Is there a way of automatically checking the file size and run the zip task in loop until the correct output file size is detected?
I have already checked, and the problem is not the source directory content.
Below is a snippet similar to my project content
<Project DefaultTargets="CreateZipPackage" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
<PropertyGroup>
<Configuration Condition=" '$(Configuration)' == '' ">Release</Configuration>
<OutVersion>1.1.1.1</OutVersion>
<OutDirAndVersion>$(OutDir)\$(OutVersion)</OutDirAndVersion>
<WebAppPackagePath>$(OutDirAndVersion)\WebApp_$(OutVersion).zip</WebAppPackagePath>
<Database1PackagePath>$(OutDirAndVersion)\Db1_$(OutVersion).Database.zip</Database1PackagePath>
<Database2PackagePath>$(OutDirAndVersion)\Db2_$(OutVersion).Database.zip</Database2PackagePath>
<Database3PackagePath>$(OutDirAndVersion)\Db3_$(OutVersion).Database.zip</Database3PackagePath>
<ReleasePackageFolderPath>$(OutDir)\Interim_$(OutVersion)_Packages</ReleasePackageFolderPath>
<ReleasePackagePath>$(OutDir)\Final_$(OutVersion).zip</ReleasePackagePath>
</PropertyGroup>
<ItemGroup>
<DeployablePackages Include="$(OutDirAndVersion)\*.zip" />

<ZipDirectory SourceDirectory="$(ReleasePackageFolderPath)" DestinationFile="$(ReleasePackagePath)" />
</Target>

I have a .proj file which is configured to execute a solution file which in turn build all the projects in the solution.
I want to add an XCopy operation which should copy the .dll files of all projects to another location only after all the projects build is completed.
I have tried with below, but it is not copying the dlls.
I am newbie in writing MSBuild tags, so it could be that I may be wrong in choosing this approach to write the task in this way.
Please provide a solution, if anyone knows.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Project ToolsVersion="Current" DefaultTargets="Build" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
<PropertyGroup>
<Configuration Condition="'$(Configuration)' == 'Release|Debug'"/>
<Platform Condition="'$(Platform)' == ''">x64</Platform>
</PropertyGroup>
<ItemDefinitionGroup>
<SolutionToBuild>
<Properties>Configuration=$(Configuration);Platform=$(Platform)</Properties>
<Targets>Clean;Build</Targets>
</SolutionToBuild>
</ItemDefinitionGroup>
<ItemGroup>
<SolutionToBuild Include="..\Seg\Algorithms.sln" />
</ItemGroup>
<Target Name="Build" >
<MSBuild Projects="#(SolutionToBuild)" Targets="%(SolutionToBuild.Targets)" Properties="%(SolutionToBuild.Properties)" BuildInParallel="false" ContinueOnError="false" />
</Target>
<Target Name="Clean">
<MSBuild Projects="#(SolutionToBuild)" Targets="Clean" Properties="%(SolutionToBuild.Properties)" BuildInParallel="false" ContinueOnError="false" />
</Target>
<PropertyGroup>
<CopyDestination>..\Extern\Algo\bin\$(Configuration)\</CopyDestination>
<CopySource>..\Seg\Algorithms\$(Configuration)\DoBin\</CopySource>
</PropertyGroup>
<ItemGroup>
<FilesToCopy Include="$(CopySource)*.dll"/>
</ItemGroup>
<ItemGroup>
<CustomBuildStep Include ="#(FilesToCopy)">
<Message>Copying..</Message>
<Command> XCOPY %(Identity) $(CopyDestination) /f /y </Command>
</CustomBuildStep>
</ItemGroup>
<PropertyGroup>
<CustomBuildAfterTargets>Build</CustomBuildAfterTargets>
</PropertyGroup>
</Project>
Think of Targets as methods that are called. They run in sequence, so you just need to put your copy after the solution build:
<Target Name="Build">
<MSBuild Projects="#(SolutionToBuild)" Targets="%(SolutionToBuild.Targets)" Properties="%(SolutionToBuild.Properties)" BuildInParallel="false" ContinueOnError="false" />
<ItemGroup>
<FilesToCopy Include="..\Seg\Algorithms\$(Configuration)\DoBin\*.dll" />
</ItemGroup>
<Copy SourceFiles="#(FilesToCopy)" DestinationFolder="..\Extern\Algo\bin\$(Configuration)\" SkipUnchangedFiles="true" />
</Target>
Let's say I have a build.proj like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Project ToolsVersion="4.0"
DefaultTargets="AfterBuild"
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
<PropertyGroup>
<CustomAfterMicrosoftCSharpTargets>$(MSBuildThisFileDirectory)Common.Build.targets</CustomAfterMicrosoftCSharpTargets>
<Configuration>Release</Configuration>
<Platform>Any CPU</Platform>
<ProjectProperties>
Configuration=$(Configuration);
Platform=$(Platform);
CustomAfterMicrosoftCSharpTargets=$(CustomAfterMicrosoftCSharpTargets);
</ProjectProperties>
</PropertyGroup>
<ItemGroup>
<ProjectToBuild Include="$(MSBuildThisFileDirectory)src\Proj\MyApp.csproj" />
</ItemGroup>
<Target Name="Build">
<MSBuild Targets="Build"
Projects="#(ProjectToBuild)"
Properties="$(ProjectProperties)" />
</Target>
<Target Name="AfterBuild" DependsOn="Build">
<Message Text="ChildProperty: $(ChildProperty)" />
</Target>
</Project>
In Common.Build.targets, I have a Target that creates a property:
<Target Name="DoSomethingUseful">
<!-- Do something useful -->
<CreateProperty Value="SomeComputedThingy">
<Output TaskParameter="Value" PropertyName="ChildProperty"/>
</CreateProperty>
</Target>
Now if I build build.proj, I do not see the value of ChildProperty in the message. The output is blank: ChildProperty:.
I was under the impression that any output for a target is merged back to global context after its execution. But it seems that it only applies to anything within that target file.
How do I make ChildProperty bubble up to the parent build.proj?
When you are calling <MSBuild> task on dependent projects, read TargetOutputs output parameter of the task. See example from MSDN:
<Target Name="BuildOtherProjects">
<MSBuild
Projects="#(ProjectReferences)"
Targets="Build">
<Output
TaskParameter="TargetOutputs"
ItemName="AssembliesBuiltByChildProjects" />
</MSBuild>
</Target>
You will also need to ensure the target you are calling in dependent projects correctly populates Returns or Output parameter (Returns takes precedence if used). E.g.:
<Target Name="MyTarget" Inputs="..." Outputs="..." Returns="$(MyOutputValue)">
<PropertyGroup>
<MyOutputValue>set it here</MyOutputValue>
</PropertyGroup>
</Target>
I saw this S.O question and have a similar requirement. This is what I have in a .targets file -
<Project xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
<PropertyGroup Condition="$(TeamBuildOutDir) != '' ">
<OutputPath>$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies</OutputPath>
</PropertyGroup>
How can I output to multiple folders?
e.g.- $(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies2
TIA
Thanks Nick, The copy/paste mucked it up. This is what I tried -
<Project xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
<PropertyGroup Condition="$(TeamBuildOutDir) != '' ">
<OutputPath>$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies</OutputPath>
</PropertyGroup>
<Target Name="AfterBuild">
<Copy SourceFiles="$(OutputPath)\**\*.*" DestinationFolder="$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies2" />
</Target>
</Project>
I've also tried -
<Copy SourceFiles="$(OutputPath)\***\*.*" DestinationFolder="$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies2" />
and -
<Copy SourceFiles="$(OutputPath)\***\*.*" DestinationFolder="$(TeamBuildOutDir)\" />
in case the directory not being present caused an issue but still no luck.
Updated 7/28. Tried this but doesn't work still (no errors but the files are not present in the output directory. They are present in the Assemblies folder so I know the targets file is being triggered.) -
<Project xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003">
<PropertyGroup Condition="$(TeamBuildOutDir) != '' ">
<OutputPath>$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies</OutputPath>
</PropertyGroup>
<Target Name="AfterBuild">
<CreateItem Include="$(OutputPath)\**\*.*">
<Output ItemName="Outfiles" TaskParameter="Include" />
</CreateItem>
<Copy SourceFiles="#(Outfiles)" DestinationFiles="#(Outfiles->'$(TeamBuildOutDir)\%(relativedir)%(Filename)%(Extension)')" SkipUnchangedFiles="false" />
</Target>
</Project>
You create an AfterBuild target with a copy task the contents of $(OutputPath) to $(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies2.
<Target Name="AfterBuild">
<Copy SourceFiles="$(OutputPath)\**\*.*" DestinationFolder="$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies2" />
</Target>
Edit, updating this to include a test message, and include a "DependsOnTarget" attribute to see if we can get this to occur after the build process...
<Target Name="AfterBuild" DependsOnTarget="Build">
<Message Text="**** TEST **** " Importance="high" />
<Copy SourceFiles="$(OutputPath)\**\*.*" DestinationFolder="$(TeamBuildOutDir)\Assemblies2" />
</Target>
I have an MsBuild project which builds various solutions and then copies the output of Web Deployment Projects into a destination folder with two sub folder as follows:
The WDP output folders are copied over from the BuildFolder "Release".
DestFolder/PresentationTier/MyProject.xxx0Services_deploy/**Release**/Files...
DestFolder/MidTier/MyProject.xx1UI_deploy/**Release**/Files...
This works but I want to remove the $(Configuration) value from the output.
So the desired output folder layout is to be:
DestFolder/PresentationTier/MyProject.xxx0Services_deploy/Files...
DestFolder/MidTier/MyProject.xx1UI_deploy/Files...
Note the removal of "Release" folder
My code is below.
How can I change this to give the desired out please:
Code extract is as follows
<Target Name="CopyMidTierBuildOutput" DependsOnTargets="CopyPresentationTierBuildOutput" >
<Message Text="Copying midTier Build Output=================" />
<CreateItem Include="$(DeploymentRoot)**/MyProject.xxx0Services_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/MyProject.xxx1Services.Host_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/MyProject.xxx2.Host.IIS.csproj_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/MyProject.xxx3Services_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx4_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx5Services.Host_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx6Services.Host_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx7Service.Host.IIS_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx8Services.Host_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx9Service.Host.IIS.csproj_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*;
$(DeploymentRoot)**/Nad.xxx10Services.Host_deploy/$(Configuration)/**/*.*">
<Output TaskParameter="Include" ItemName="MidTierDeploys"/>
</CreateItem>
<Copy
SourceFiles="#(MidTierDeploys)"
DestinationFolder="$(DestFolder)/MidTier/%(RecursiveDir)" ContinueOnError="false" />
You can implement expected behaviour with biltin features of MSBuild 4:
<ItemGroup>
<DeploymentProjects Include="1_deploy" />
<DeploymentProjects Include="2_deploy" />
</ItemGroup>
<Target Name="CopyMidTierBuildOutput" >
<Message Text="Copying midTier Build Output" Importance="High"/>
<ItemGroup>
<MidTierDeploys Include="$(DeploymentRoot)**\%(DeploymentProjects.Identity)\$(Configuration)\**\*.*">
<DeploymentProject>%(DeploymentProjects.Identity)</DeploymentProject>
</MidTierDeploys>
</ItemGroup>
<Msbuild Targets="CopyDeploymentItem"
Projects="$(MSBuildProjectFile)"
Properties="ItemFullPath=%(MidTierDeploys.FullPath);ItemRecursiveDir=%(MidTierDeploys.RecursiveDir);ItemDeploymentProject=%(MidTierDeploys.DeploymentProject);Configuration=$(Configuration);DestFolder=$(DestFolder)" />
</Target>
<Target Name="CopyDeploymentItem" >
<PropertyGroup>
<ItemExcludePath>$(ItemDeploymentProject)\$(Configuration)</ItemExcludePath>
<ItemDestRecursiveDirIndex>$(ItemRecursiveDir.IndexOf($(ItemExcludePath))) </ItemDestRecursiveDirIndex>
<ItemExcludePathLength>$(ItemExcludePath.Length)</ItemExcludePathLength>
<ItemSkippingCount>$([MSBuild]::Add($(ItemDestRecursiveDirIndex), $(ItemExcludePathLength)))</ItemSkippingCount>
<ItemDestRecursiveDir>$(ItemRecursiveDir.Substring($(ItemSkippingCount)))</ItemDestRecursiveDir>
</PropertyGroup>
<Copy
SourceFiles="$(ItemFullPath)"
DestinationFolder="$(DestFolder)/MidTier/$(ItemDeploymentProject)/$(ItemDestRecursiveDir)" ContinueOnError="false" />
</Target>

i am trying to automatically update the assembly information of a project using AssemblyInfo task, before build however the target appears to do nothing (no failure/error) just no update/creation
Below is the build.proj file I am using (obviously some contents altered)
Can anyone help?
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

I think you are missing the specification of the AssemblyInfoFiles attribute on your AssemblyInfo task. Here's how it looks on a project I'm working on...
<Target Name="AfterGet">
<Message Text="In After Get"/>
<CreateItem Include="$(SolutionRoot)\Source\SomeProject\My Project\AssemblyInfo.vb">
<Output ItemName="AssemblyInfoFiles" TaskParameter="Include"/>
</CreateItem>
<Attrib Files="#(AssemblyInfoFiles)"
ReadOnly="false"/>
<AssemblyInfo AssemblyInfoFiles="#(AssemblyInfoFiles)"
AssemblyDescription="$(LabelName)">
</AssemblyInfo>
</Target>
What we're doing is first using to create a property that contains the name of the file we'll be updating. We have to do this via createItem because when we start the build the file doesn't exist (and that is when MSBuild evaluates the and definitions in your build file.
We then take the readonly bit off the file.
Finally we invoke the AssemblyInfo task passing it the file(s) to update and a custom assembly name that we want to give it (in this case we put the TFS build label into the Assembly Description field so that we can easily tell which team build the assembly came from.
