Long File Path Fails to Copy File to New Directory - vba

I have this posted under my original post, but thought I would create a new question. I have the below code working that looks at my table in MS Access that has the path + file name and moves it to a new directory; I will also be looking at how to put Folders/Subfolders in the "new" directory based off of the original directory, but am unsure how to accomplish that. It currently works on my test table that has <259 characters in the path, but fails on long path/file names >259. Thoughts how how this can be addressed?
Appreciate the help.
Sub CopyFilesFromTable2()
On Error GoTo ErrorHandler
Dim source As String
Dim destination As String
Dim FSO As New FileSystemObject
Dim SQL As String
Dim RS As DAO.Recordset
Dim db As DAO.Database
'Test Table
SQL = "select * from file_test"
'Prod Table
'SQL = "select * from file"
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set db = CurrentDb
Set RS = db.OpenRecordset(SQL)
source = RS!LocalFile
File = VBA.FileSystem.Dir(source)
destination = "D:\Temp\Test\"
With RS
If Not .BOF And Not .EOF Then
.MoveLast
.MoveFirst
While (Not .EOF)
FSO.CopyFile RS!LocalFile, destination
.MoveNext
Wend
End If
.Close
End With
ExitSub:
Set RS = Nothing
'set to nothing
MsgBox "Done!"
Exit Sub
ErrorHandler:
MsgBox Err, vbCritical
Resume ExitSub
End Sub

You've got a problem with long paths here, generally, these are best avoided.
However, with a tiny bit of WinAPI, you can easily avoid the issue.
Implement CopyFileExW:
Public Declare PtrSafe Function CopyFileExW Lib "Kernel32.DLL" (ByVal lpExistingFileName As LongPtr, ByVal lpNewFileName As LongPtr, ByVal lpProgressRoutine As LongPtr, ByVal lpData As LongPtr, ByRef pbCancel As Boolean, ByVal dwCopyFlags As Long) As Boolean
Declare consts:
Const COPY_FILE_FAIL_IF_EXISTS = 1&
Create a function that calls CopyFileExW, and prepends \\?\ to the path to allow for long paths:
Public Function CopyFile(strSource As String, strDestination As String, Optional Overwrite As Boolean = False)
strSource = "\\?\" & strSource
strDestination = "\\?\" & strDestination
Dim flags As Long
If Not Overwrite Then
flags = COPY_FILE_FAIL_IF_EXISTS
End If
Dim res As Boolean
res = CopyFileExW(StrPtr(strSource), StrPtr(strDestination), 0, 0, ByVal 0, flags)
If res = False Then
Err.Raise -5000, Description:="Copy file failed, error code " & Err.LastDllError
End If
End Function
And use that function, instead of RS!LocalFile, destination:
'CopyFile file needs the full path, so we append the filename
CopyFile RS!LocalFile, Destination & Right(RS!LocalFile, InStr(strReverse("RS!LocalFile"), "\") - 1)

How to update the server name for all ODBC linked SQL Server tables using Access VBA

I need to be able to provide a method to update the server name in all ODBC linked table connections in an Access database. All tables have been migrated out of Access to a SQL Express instance. An option is needed to update all external table links to point from "Localhost\SQLExpress" to a SQL instance on another server. The database name will remain consistent. Only the Server instance name needs to be updated.
I've found examples of how to do this for connections to Access database files and Excel files, but not ODBC connections to SQL Server. One post here pointed out the need to dimension a db object and use it directly instead of trying to use CurrentDb directly. That got me further, but now the code fails with a type conversion when trying to assign the new connection string to the TableDef.
Dim OldServer As String
Dim NewServer As String
Dim OldPath As String
Dim NewPath As String
Dim strPath As String
NewServer = Me.NewServerInstance ' get new Server Instance name from form
OldPath = GetCurrentPath("Version")
'Parse old name from the ODBC connection string
OldServer = Replace(Left(OldPath, InStr(GetCurrentPath("Version"), "UID=") - 2), "ODBC Driver 13 for SQL Server;SERVER=", "")
NewPath = Replace(OldPath, OldServer, NewServer)
If NewServer = OldServer Then
GoTo UpdateInstance_Click_Exit
Else
'update all table connection strings.
'Loop & replace Old server instance with New server instance
Dim Db As DAO.Database
Set Db = CurrentDb
Dim td As DAO.TableDef
For Each td In Db.TableDefs
If (td.Attributes And dbAttachedODBC) = dbAttachedODBC Then
Db.TableDefs(td).Connect = NewPath 'getting a datatype conversion error here...
Db.TableDefs(td).RefreshLink
' MsgBox (db.TableDefs(td).Connect)
End If
Next
End If
The code example is what I came up with. There is a comment indicating the point where a datatype conversion error occurs. I guess I need to know if this is this even possible, or if I am trying to do something that is not possible, or just going about it the wrong way...

Retrieve list of files using SVN revision number

TortoiseSVN provides a COM interface for retrieving information about a file.
Using VBA, I can get information about a file in the SVN repository by doing this:
Public Function getSvnURL(ByVal fullFilename As String)
Dim oSvn As Object
Set oSvn = CreateObject("SubWCRev.Object")
oSvn.GetWCInfo fullFilename, 1, 1
getSvnURL = oSvn.url
End Function
If I have an SVN revision number however, is there an API I can use to get the files that were part of that commit? Something like:
Public Function getFilesInRevision(revisionNumber As Integer) as Collection
Dim oSvn As Object
Set oSvn = CreateObject("SubWCRev.Object")
oSvn.GetWCInfo revisionNumber
getFilesInRevision= oSvn.fileList
End Function
I ended up using the following method:
Public Function getFilesForRevision(revisionNumber As Long, folder As String) As Collection
Dim command As String
command = "svn log -v -q -r " & revisionNumber & " " & folder
Dim rawText As String
rawText = ShellRun(command)
Dim lines() As String
lines = Split(rawText, vbLf)
Set getFilesForRevision = New Collection
Dim filenameRegex As Object
Set filenameRegex = CreateObject("VBScript.RegExp")
filenameRegex.Pattern = "\s{3}.\s(.*)"
Dim line As Variant
For Each line In lines
If filenameRegex.test(line) Then
getFilesForRevision.Add (filenameRegex.Execute(line).Item(0).submatches(0))
End If
Next line
End Function
Which relies on this method to run the command and store the console output:
'http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2784367/capture-output-value-from-a-shell-command-in-vba
Public Function ShellRun(sCmd As String) As String
'Run a shell command, returning the output as a string'
Dim oShell As Object
Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
'run command'
Dim oExec As Object
Dim oOutput As Object
Set oExec = oShell.Exec(sCmd)
Set oOutput = oExec.StdOut
'handle the results as they are written to and read from the StdOut object'
Dim s As String
Dim sLine As String
While Not oOutput.AtEndOfStream
sLine = oOutput.ReadLine
If sLine <> "" Then s = s & sLine & vbCrLf
Wend
ShellRun = s
End Function
Which can be called like this:
Sub getFilesForRevisionTest()
Dim files As Collection
Set files = getFilesForRevision(111041, "C:\SVN\")
Dim fullFilename As Variant
For Each fullFilename In files
Debug.Print fullFilename
Next fullFilename
End Sub

Uploading to Google drive using VBA?

I have an MS Access database which now requires me to 'attach' documents to it. My intention is to store the documents on Google Drive and have a link on the database for users to retrieve the documents.
As there are many users spread through different cities, it is not practical to require them to have synced Google Drive folders. All the users will need the ability to upload to the database/GD so my intention is to have a separate Google account for the database - with its own login details.
example:
User clicks button to upload file
Save as dialog box appears and user selects file
Database logs into its Google Drive and uploads selected file
Lots of problems with this though, the main one being that Google Drive does not support VBA.
If the user is logged into their own Gmail account, that will probably be another issue.
I came across this code for vb.net on another site.
Imports System
Imports System.Diagnostics
Imports DotNetOpenAuth.OAuth2
Imports Google.Apis.Authentication.OAuth2
Imports Google.Apis.Authentication.OAuth2.DotNetOpenAuth
Imports Google.Apis.Drive.v2
Imports Google.Apis.Drive.v2.Data
Imports Google.Apis.Util
Imports Google.Apis.Services
Namespace GoogleDriveSamples
Class DriveCommandLineSample
Shared Sub Main(ByVal args As String)
Dim CLIENT_ID As [String] = "YOUR_CLIENT_ID"
Dim CLIENT_SECRET As [String] = "YOUR_CLIENT_SECRET"
'' Register the authenticator and create the service
Dim provider = New NativeApplicationClient(GoogleAuthenticationServer.Description, CLIENT_ID, CLIENT_SECRET)
Dim auth = New OAuth2Authenticator(Of NativeApplicationClient)(provider, GetAuthorization)
Dim service = New DriveService(New BaseClientService.Initializer() With { _
.Authenticator = auth _
})
Dim body As New File()
body.Title = "My document"
body.Description = "A test document"
body.MimeType = "text/plain"
Dim byteArray As Byte() = System.IO.File.ReadAllBytes("document.txt")
Dim stream As New System.IO.MemoryStream(byteArray)
Dim request As FilesResource.InsertMediaUpload = service.Files.Insert(body, stream, "text/plain")
request.Upload()
Dim file As File = request.ResponseBody
Console.WriteLine("File id: " + file.Id)
Console.WriteLine("Press Enter to end this process.")
Console.ReadLine()
End Sub
Private Shared Function GetAuthorization(ByVal arg As NativeApplicationClient) As IAuthorizationState
' Get the auth URL:
Dim state As IAuthorizationState = New AuthorizationState( New () {DriveService.Scopes.Drive.GetStringValue()})
state.Callback = New Uri(NativeApplicationClient.OutOfBandCallbackUrl)
Dim authUri As Uri = arg.RequestUserAuthorization(state)
' Request authorization from the user (by opening a browser window):
Process.Start(authUri.ToString())
Console.Write(" Authorization Code: ")
Dim authCode As String = Console.ReadLine()
Console.WriteLine()
' Retrieve the access token by using the authorization code:
Return arg.ProcessUserAuthorization(authCode, state)
End Function
End Class
End Namespace
It was suggested that the IE library could be utilised to log into the Google Drive and the API calls made from the above to upload. I don't know how to do this. Somewhere else it was mentioned that a 'COM wrapper' may be suitable. I don't have experience with any coding other than VBA (self taught) so am struggling to understand what the next step should be.
If anyone has done something similar or can offer any advice, I would be grateful to hear from you.
This thread might be dead now but if you are working with forms in your database and the user needs to be attaching the files to a particular record displayed in a form with a unique identification number then this is definitely possible but you would have to do it in an external application written in .NET I can provide you with the necessary code to get you started, vb.net is very similar to VBA.
What you would need to do is create a windows form project and add references to Microsoft access core dll and download the nugget package for google drive api from nugget.
Imports Google
Imports Google.Apis.Services
Imports Google.Apis.Drive.v2
Imports Google.Apis.Auth.OAuth2
Imports Google.Apis.Drive.v2.Data
Imports System.Threading
Public Class GoogleDriveAuth
Public Shared Function GetAuthentication() As DriveService
Dim ClientIDString As String = "Your Client ID"
Dim ClientSecretString As String = "Your Client Secret"
Dim ApplicationNameString As String = "Your Application Name"
Dim secrets = New ClientSecrets()
secrets.ClientId = ClientIDString
secrets.ClientSecret = ClientSecretString
Dim scope = New List(Of String)
scope.Add(DriveService.Scope.Drive)
Dim credential = GoogleWebAuthorizationBroker.AuthorizeAsync(secrets, scope, "user", CancellationToken.None).Result()
Dim initializer = New BaseClientService.Initializer
initializer.HttpClientInitializer = credential
initializer.ApplicationName = ApplicationNameString
Dim Service = New DriveService(initializer)
Return Service
End Function
End Class
This code will authorise your drive service then you create a Public Shared Service As DriveService under your imports that can be used from any sub or function then call this function on your form load event like
Service = GoogleDriveAuth.GetAuthentication
Add a reference to your project to Microsoft Access 12.0 Object Library or whatever version you have
Then this piece of code will look at the form you want to get the value of the record no from and upload a file to your choice of folder

Hopefully this helps you make a start I am 100% convinced this is achievable as I have already done this for my manager.
This reply might be late but just wanna share one of the approach!
I have done this successfully with VBA and the demo link is here
http://www.sfdp.net/thuthuataccess/demo/democAuth.rar?attredirects=0&d=1
With this, you can upload, download or delete a file with your GoogleDrive in Access..
Just Wininet + WinHTTP enough

How do I download a file using VBA (without Internet Explorer)

I need to download a CSV file from a website using VBA in Excel. The server also needed to authenticate me since it was data from a survey service.
I found a lot of examples using Internet Explorer controlled with VBA for this. However, it was mostly slow solutions and most were also convoluted.
Update:
After a while I found a nifty solution using Microsoft.XMLHTTP object in Excel. I thought to share the solution below for future reference.
This solution is based from this website:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bd0ee306-7bb5-4ce4-8341-edd9475f84ad/excel-2007-use-vba-to-download-save-csv-from-url
It is slightly modified to overwrite existing file and to pass along login credentials.
Sub DownloadFile()
Dim myURL As String
myURL = "https://YourWebSite.com/?your_query_parameters"
Dim WinHttpReq As Object
Set WinHttpReq = CreateObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")
WinHttpReq.Open "GET", myURL, False, "username", "password"
WinHttpReq.send
If WinHttpReq.Status = 200 Then
Set oStream = CreateObject("ADODB.Stream")
oStream.Open
oStream.Type = 1
oStream.Write WinHttpReq.responseBody
oStream.SaveToFile "C:\file.csv", 2 ' 1 = no overwrite, 2 = overwrite
oStream.Close
End If
End Sub
Declare PtrSafe Function URLDownloadToFile Lib "urlmon" Alias "URLDownloadToFileA" _

ByVal dwReserved As Long, ByVal lpfnCB As Long) As Long
Sub Example()
DownloadFile$ = "someFile.ext" 'here the name with extension
URL$ = "http://some.web.address/" & DownloadFile 'Here is the web address
LocalFilename$ = "C:\Some\Path" & DownloadFile !OR! CurrentProject.Path & "\" & DownloadFile 'here the drive and download directory
MsgBox "Download Status : " & URLDownloadToFile(0, URL, LocalFilename, 0, 0) = 0
End Sub

I found the above when looking for downloading from FTP with username and address in URL. Users supply information and then make the calls.
This was helpful because our organization has Kaspersky AV which blocks active FTP.exe, but not web connections. We were unable to develop in house with ftp.exe and this was our solution. Hope this helps other looking for info!
A modified version of above to make it more dynamic.

I was struggling for hours on this until I figured out it can be done in one line of powershell:
invoke-webrequest -Uri "http://myserver/Reports/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fClients%2ftest&rs:Format=PDF&rs:ClearSession=true&CaseCode=12345678" -OutFile "C:\Temp\test.pdf" -UseDefaultCredentials
I looked into doing it purely in VBA but it runs to several pages, so I just call my powershell script from VBA every time I want to download a file.
Simple.
Public Sub Test_DownloadFile()
Dim URLStr As String, DLPath As String, UName As String, PWD As String, DontOverWrite As Boolean
URLStr = "http.."
DLPath = Environ("USERPROFILE") & "\Downloads\TEST.PDF"
UName = ""
PWD = ""
DontOverWrite = False

Updating the Northwind Refresh Table Links in Access

There is this database program that I am working on. For some reason the boss purchased all 64bit 2010 Office Suites so I am updating the program to work on the 64bit Office.
In this section I have a problem with trying to figure out the way to make this work on 64bit Access. I can't seem to get a straight answer about msaof, nor can I find any work that has the updated code. Its part of the Northwind Refresh Table Link which can be found on the internet but code only works in 32bit.
Private Sub MSAOF_to_OF(msaof As MSA_OPENFILENAME, of As OPENFILENAME)
' This sub converts from the friendly MSAccess structure to the win32 structure.
Dim strFile As String * 512
' Initialize some parts of the structure.
of.hwndOwner = Application.hWndAccessApp
of.hInstance = 0
of.lpstrCustomFilter = 0
of.nMaxCustrFilter = 0
of.lpfnHook = 0
of.lpTemplateName = 0
of.lCustrData = 0
If msaof.strFilter = "" Then
of.lpstrFilter = MSA_CreateFilterString(ALLFILES)
Else
of.lpstrFilter = msaof.strFilter
End If
of.nFilterIndex = msaof.lngFilterIndex
of.lpstrFile = msaof.strInitialFile & String$(512 - Len(msaof.strInitialFile), 0)
of.nMaxFile = 511
of.lpstrFileTitle = String$(512, 0)
of.nMaxFileTitle = 511
of.lpstrTitle = msaof.strDialogTitle
of.lpstrInitialDir = msaof.strInitialDir
of.lpstrDefExt = msaof.strDefaultExtension
of.flags = msaof.lngFlags
of.lStructSize = Len(of)
End Sub
One of thing is that I get the error "of.nMaxCustrFilter = 0" does not exist but when I comment it out the debugger still points to it and Highlights the entire first line.

As an alternative to messing around with the 32/64-bit API declarations, you could just use the Application.FileDialog method that is available in Access 2010. It works with both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Access.
It seems likely that you have Declare Function somewhere that need to read Declare PtrSafe Function. Then you will have to make sure that you have a 64 bit library for the DLL you are calling. It seems (not well tested) to work fine in my 64 bit application using the code here http://www.dbforums.com/microsoft-access/990945-building-database-help.html.
