In the pen i've created, the child component does two things, it watches the props and has a method which emits two values.
The parent handling the emitted values modifies the prop and changes the component. However, the child component never fires its watch event.

How come the watcher is not firing?

you can use something like tiny emitter it works fine and doesn't care about parent child relationship

You can only pass props to a direct child component, and
you can only emit an event to a direct parent. But
you can provide and eject from anywhere to anywhere
Per another answer, provide and eject may be your best bet in Vue 3, but I created a simple example of how to implement with props/events. Built with Vue 2 as I haven't worked with 3 yet, but should be usable in Vue 3 as well.

Right now when I click outside the modal it behaves ok, the close event is called.
But it is also called when I click inside the modal.
Not I tried to use #click.self , but now it doesn't work anymore even when clicking outside the modal.

I am currently learning VueJs, but I don't understand how this works. I thought self will prevent propagating click event to child elements and thats it.

With this code you don't have to worry about click event's propagation #click.stop, for the style purpose I am using bootstrap.css but you can write your own style.

EventBus.$on expects a handler function as a second argument but the variable this.key is passed in, hence the error.
You should change this :

I'm writing a re-usable component. It's basically a section with a header and body, where if you click the header, the body will expand/collapse.
I want to allow the consumer of the component to use v-model to bind a boolean to it so that it can expand/collapse under any condition it wants, but within my component, the user can click to expand/collapse.
I've got it working, but it requires the user of the component to use v-model, if they don't, then the component doesn't work.
I essentially want the consumer to decide if they care about being able to see/change the state of the component or not. If they don't, they shouldn't have to supply a v-model attribute to the component.

Your update works and has the right gist in general, but instead of a watcher it would be better to use a computed property. See the docs for computed properties and watchers for more info.

I would agree with #anaximander that you should use child components here

This sounds like an ideal situation for a new child component, which will allow each instance of the new component to have its own separate state.
The child components can emit events to the parent, if cross-component communication is necessary.
