I have been using the same SQL Server account for well over a year, and just yesterday, the process stopped working. I get different error messages, depending on where I am trying and failing to log into it.
FROM SQL Server Management Server: the system cannot find the file specified.
From services (local): windows could not start the server ... on local server.
From Registered server: the service started then stopped.
Can someone please tell me where the file that encompasses the failed database is? If this database is truly lost to me, I hope to recapture the stored procedures, functions, table types, etc. that the database defines, even if I can't install it again.
From the services, I am able to enable the Full-text filter daemon Launcher, but nothing else.
SQL Server: Windows could not start the SQL Server ... on local computer.
SQL Server Agent: the dependence group or service failed to start.
Analysis services: the process terminated unexpectedly
In every case, the desired server shows up, but these are the roadblocks thrown my way by the various means at my disposal to find out more. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Please looked into the properties of the service, check whether the file path of SQL server service executable file is correct. It is better to share us more related information from error log or windows event log.

I am having an issue at work that is driving me mad. I am new to SQL, and am finding my legs as a system administrator (trial by fire). We have a production server that runs a SQL database and I am trying to mimic the production server in a stand-alone (test) environment. My stand-alone server is of the exact hardware and I have ghosted the production server drives on to the test server (stand-alone) as well. Everything is identical. The only difference is my test server is not in a domain. Its only in a workgroup. My setup consists of one client machine (Windows 7) and the test server running Server 2008r2(SP2)+ SQL Server 2008r2.
We have applications that connect to the database and when I run the applications (connect to the database?), I get the following error.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5)
I have been researching this error for about 3 months now. I am at my wits end. I have tried all the solutions I could find. Most of the solutions I found here at this site. Enable remote connections-DONE, Firewall execptions-not necessary as I can disable the firewall since I'm on a standalone network, but I have been down that road before and it did not help. I don't think this is a network issue as I am using just a switch with the server and one client connected. I can ping back and forth between the systems.
I've tried so many other solutions that I cant even remember them all. Changed so many settings I've lost count. Thank goodness I can re-image the server back to normal if I feel I've gone to far and changed too many settings to where I can't remember what I've done.
As you can tell, I probably only make things worse the more I try to fix the error, but I have no choice. Everyone is looking at me to fix this and get the test server working, but I need some help. A huge thank you in advance to anyone that can help me solve this. It would be greatly appreciated!
I have a SQL Server 2008 instance installed on a windows XP host. Had a situation where my Windows 2008 server had a critical hardware failure and I reached a point where that OS had to be completely reinstalled.
Anyway, whenever I attempt to log into SSMS to the default instance through windows authentication it tells me that the log in failed, error 18456.
Attempted to run the program as administrator, no dice. I cannot log in with SQL Server authentication, either.
I would really hate to delete the instance and re-create it. Anyone have any better ideas?
there should be an entry after or prior to the error you provided in the SQL Error logs that gives you the details about why the login failed. If you can provide that entry of the error log we can provide you a little bit more assistance.
I have tried EVERY suggestion I have found so far in SE and nothing works. Let me explain what is going on.
I am a PHP developer and I am making a transition to ASP. So I am developing a website locally and I need a database going, also locally. But like I said, I can't add the NORTHWND database because I don't have the server up and running. I read through the tutorials and I seen to be missing a piece of every puzzle.
I have SQL Server 2008 running.
These guys Add Database say to attach the database via VS12. I have no such option to "Attach"
These guys here Connect to your server say to connect to the SQL server but I can't connect. When I try, I get an error that says:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while
establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or
was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that
SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named
Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
(.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I also noticed there was a localdb with username LOTUSMS. I don't remember ever making a username for anything here. And I can't remove it or make one up. (Windows Authentication)
And then these guys Turn on your Server Service say the Server must be up and running and to log into the SQL server Configuration Manager and ensure the SQL services are running. Well, they are not. It says "the remote procedure call failed" and there is no other options to restart or edit or anything
So as you can see, I know my problems, but I can't find the solution to them. Anyone? I am not sure as to what logs or extra evidence you may need, so before I go adding unnecessary text and pics here, I'll leave it open and produce the evidence as requested.
Thanks in advance
There is probably a simple answer to this question but I do not have much experience with SQL Server/SSAS. I can connect to my local server PCNAME\SQLEXPRESS in SQL Server 2008. On that server I have made a database, some dimension tables, and a fact table that I intend to build a cube from.
I have been following tutorials on the internet on how to build a cube. I can successfully make a data source that connects to PCNAME\SQLEXPRESS, as well as make a data source view from it.
The problem is that after I build the cube, I get A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running. and cannot process the cube. BIDS is displaying the star schema of my tables just fine, recognizes the relationships via foreign keys, etc... so I figured the server was running since it could access all of that data.
Does anyone know why this is happening, and if my server really isn't running can someone tell me how to start it? I am using SQL Server 2008 R2.
Thanks,
Logan
edit: I just tried to change the server name to PCNAME\SQLEXPRESS instead of localhost in the Properties->Deployment option menu. I get A connection cannot be made to redirector. Ensure that 'SQL Browser' is running.
I solved this problem - for people that find this page on Google in the future: when I first installed SQL Server, the SSAS part failed to install. I uninstalled SQL Server and when I reinstalled, I looked deeper into the issue. Apparently one of the services needed to run SSAS has a weird bug where it cannot be started if your Event Log is full. I finished the installation of SQL Server, cleared my Event Log (Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> Click Each Log and go to Action -> Clear All Events), and then started the SSAS service in the SQL Configuration Manager.
You can start by going to "Programs->Microsoft SQL Server 2008->Configuration Tools->SQL Server Configuration Manager". Once there, you need to start the services "SQL Server", "SQL Server Analysis Services", and maybe try starting "SQL Server Browser", though I believe that is not necessary.
I was implemented a windows application which is working perfectly.
The concept is to read an Access Database and export to MS SQL Server 2005 Database.
Now i want to make it as windows service and half way done. The problem is it is not working (Not updating the database).
The service was installed perfectly and running but not updating the database. I made that service as "Local Service", "Network Service", "Local System" and "User" bu not working for any of this type.
Can any one help me out for solving this.
The development environment is MS Visual Studio 2005, C#.NET, MS Access, MSSQL SERVER 2005 and Network supported Environment.
Thanks.
You could do this with Linked Server or an SSIS job running on SQL Agent which may well have been easier but... to tackle your question itself:
You mention trying different accounts to run the service - have you granted any of those accounts the appropriate rights on your target database to allow the service to update the data. Do they also have rights on your source (Access) database to read it.
Have you checked the Event Logs on the server and the SQL Server logs to look for reported errors, failed logins etc?
You could hook up the debugger to your running service to try and identify the problem whilst it's running or alternatively you need to write in some kind logging statements so that you can identify where your code is getting up to before it fails and log out the error message(s) so give you something to work with.
