I apologize if this seems very simple. I am new to VBA and am struggling to determine where to begin.
I am trying to create a Userform where you scan a sample, and then 3 tubes that should match the first sample, and if they do, it will send that data to a spreadsheet, and if they do not, then it will highlight Red and make you restart.
I am running into a few problems. I am not sure how to auto enter to the next text box after the first sample is scanned. For ease of use, I would like the user to just be able to scan, scan, scan, scan without interaction with the spreadsheet.
I also have tried to make use of the AutoTab function by putting in an If/Else statement, saying if value of the textbox is NOT null, it will AutoTab to the next box in the tab index, but that does not seem to be working
Please let me know of any advice you may have.
Basically, the input of the barcode scanner is the same as if someone enters the data manually - just all characters come at once (as if it is pasted). Usually, the scanner should be able to send some End-sign, in that case you should be fine as TAB or ENTER will jump to the next field automatically.
If the scanner really send the data, you have to deal with the Change-Event of the text boxes and check if the data is valid. The following example checks for a length of 8 characters. Adapt the CheckBarcodeInput to your needs. If a valid barcode was entered, the focus is set to the next textbox.
Private Sub TextBox1_Change()
If CheckBarcodeInput(Me.TextBox1.Text) Then Me.TextBox2.SetFocus
End Sub
Private Sub TextBox2_Change()
If CheckBarcodeInput(Me.TextBox2.Text) Then Me.TextBox3.SetFocus
End Sub
(...)
Private Function CheckBarcodeInput(s As String) As Boolean
' Check if barcode is valid. In this example, it simply checks the length.
If Len(s) >= 8 Then CheckBarcodeInput = True
End Function

I have been having a quite annoying issue on my access project.
It is an Access 2007 - 2016 file.
My database has two queries that I intend to use to filter data to feed combo-boxes.
On one of my forms I have done that with success. The first list is fed from a table, and the succeeding ones are fed by filtering their respective table based on the previous list selection.
Here is a screenshot of my form that worked out.
And here is part of the code that goes with it:
Private Sub frm01ListSetor_Click()
DoCmd.Requery (qry01_frm01ListArea)
Me![frm01ListArea] = Null
DoCmd.Requery (qry02_frm01ListEquip)
Me![frm01ListEquip] = Null
Me![frm01TextID] = Null
End Sub
Private Sub frm01ListArea_Click()
DoCmd.Requery (qry02_frm01ListEquip)
Me![frm01ListEquip] = Null
Me![frm01TextID] = Null
End Sub
Here are the queries that goes along with the code above:
qry01_frm01ListArea
SELECT tblAreas.ID_Area, tblAreas.NomeArea
FROM tblAreas
WHERE (((tblAreas.SetorArea)=[Forms]![frm01_AddEquip]![frm01ListSetor]));
qry02_frm01ListEquip
SELECT tblEquipamentos.ID_Equipamento, tblEquipamentos.NomeEquipamento
FROM tblEquipamentos
WHERE (((tblEquipamentos.SetorEquipamento)=[Forms]![frm01_AddEquip]![frm01ListSetor]) AND ((tblEquipamentos.AreaEquipamento)=[Forms]![frm01_AddEquip]![frm01ListArea]))
ORDER BY tblEquipamentos.ID_Equipamento;
The code above works just fine. It filters data to previous selection accordingly and it also clears the data and selection of the "righter" lists every time another value is selected on the "lefter" ones.
So that was a form I created to help me out on populating my equipment database.
Let us get to the problematic twin now:
I created another form for Maintenance Orders of these equipment.
This one must be more user friendly since other people will use it. Therefore I used Combo-boxes for value selection instead of List Boxes. I say this before hand because it is the only thing I could notice that differs the new form from the one above.
Here I have this:
Screenshot of troubled form
After the expanded Combo-box on image 2 is selected I should run the following code:
Private Sub frm02SetorOM_Click()
DoCmd.Requery (qry04_frm02CBArea)
Me![frm02AreaOM] = Null
DoCmd.Requery (qry05_frm02CBEquip)
Me![frm02EquipamentoOM] = Null
End Sub
Private Sub frm02AreaOM_Change()
DoCmd.Requery (qry05_frm02CBEquip)
Me![frm02EquipamentoOM] = Null
End Sub
It is basically the very same thing I have done on the first form but with different variables.
But I get a "Run-time error 3021: No current record" every time I select a value on my "Setor" field.
The crash happens at the "DoCmd.Requery (qry04_frm02CBArea)" line.
Here is the query for this form's Area field (qry04_frm02CBArea):
SELECT tblAreas.ID_Area, tblAreas.NomeArea
FROM tblAreas
WHERE (((tblAreas.SetorArea)=[Forms]![frm02_SubmitOM]![frm02SetorOM]));
But the thing that is confusing me the most is that when I click "End" on the Run-time error dialog box, my Area combo-box - that was empty before - even with the error gets the proper options like if it actually "requeried".
How can I fix this issue?
Thank you in advance.
Btw, this is my first Access project so please consider that on the response.
In an Access form I am using a textbox to filter an unbound subform. I want to allow the end user to quickly perform quick sequential searches. After the Enter key is pressed to perform a first search, I want the cursor/focus to remain in the text box and the current search text to be selected. In this way the user can directly start entering a new query, replacing the old search text.
I tried the answers to this question, but due to the Enter key, the selection always gets lost:
The solution I came up with is to intercept the Enter key press. It is important to cancel the event, otherwise the Enter key will remove the selection.
Private Sub txtSearch2_KeyDown(KeyCode As Integer, Shift As Integer)
If KeyCode = vbKeyReturn Then
Call Search
If Len(Me.txtSearch2.Text & "") = 0 Then Exit Sub
Me.txtSearch2.SelStart = 0
Me.txtSearch2.SelLength = Len(Me.txtSearch2.Text)
DoCmd.CancelEvent
End If
End Sub
I'm programming in Visual Basic.
I have one form.
Form 1 contains:
nameTextBox
addNameButton
namesListBox
generateButton
week1TextBox
week2TextBox
week3TextBox
week4TextBox
The user needs to go to Form 1 and type a name in the text box, then add the name to the List Box. The user will add 4 names to the List Box. So, the ListBox will contain the names: Adam, Brenda and Carol.
When the generateButton is clicked, the 3 names have to be written to the text boxes in that order. So week1TextBox should contain "Adam", week2TextBox should contain "Brenda", etc... but once the last name (in this case "Carol") is written into the text box, the loop should start over. Ultimately, there may be up to 50 week text boxes (so week50TextBox). So the loop needs to repeat over and over.
As there is a lack of source code in your question, I'm really not sure exactly how the layout should look, I can only offer some advice/suggestions.
I would recommend creating your listbox control, input textbox, and button to add names to the listbox. In addition to these, though, also add a scrollable panel. (Not sure what the exact term for that control is in VB.net; it's been a long time since I've worked with that language.) Because it sounds like there might be a variable number of items on the panel, when the user goes to generate the list of names, I would use the following rough pseudocode:
Dim OutputTexts As New ArrayList ' This is only here if you want to work with these textboxes later
Private Sub CreateOutput() Handles btnGenerate.Click
pOutputPanel.Controls.Clear()
OutputTexts.Clear()
Dim NextX As Integer = 0 ' Pretty much unnecessary value, but included in case you want to mess with this
Dim NextY As Integer = 0
For i As Integer = 0 To Convert.ToInt32(txtWeekCount.Text)
Dim txtName As New TextBox
txtName.Text = lbNameList.Item(i Mod lbNameList.Items.Count)
txtName.Location = new Point(NextX, NextY) ' Play with this as necessary
NextY += 50 ' Play with this as necessary
OutputTexts.Add(txtName)
pOutputPanel.Controls.Add(txtName)
Next
End Sub
Again, this is very much pseudocode, so I would not encourage copying and pasting, but give it a read, make sure you understand all of it, and then try implementing something similar. There might be an easier way to do it, but I have not programmed in VB.NET in probably over 2 years (at least). Nonetheless, the most important thing in here is the following line: lbNameList.Item(i Mod lbNameList.Items.Count). By Mod-ing your indexing variable, you will be accessing items sequentially, and then repeating from the start of the ListBox items collection once i is out of range.
I would also encourage you to dynamically generate your TextBox controls as needed rather than manually adding in 50 or more TextBox controls.
First of all I would like to thank all of you guys. Maybe you did not notice but you help me to grasp VBA to some level from scratch. I am still in learning process so I may be missing something really simple, please be gentle :)
First of all I would like to give a small backgroud update about my issue. I have been writing a small program to scan incoming parts to my work to be able to keep inventory status. Latest look of the program is like below:
And numbers on the picture are my nightmares lately:
1. Scanned Part Number: This is the textbox where scanner inputs the value. After I receive the input I immidietly convert that data to a variable and clear the textbox value as below:
Private Sub PN_CurrentScan_KeyDown(ByVal KeyCode As MSForms.ReturnInteger, ByVal Shift As Integer)
If KeyCode = 13 Then
EnteredPN = Replace(PN_CurrentScan.Value, Chr(32), "", 1) '<---PN_CurrentScan is the name of text box
EnteredPN = Left(EnteredPN, 12)
PN_CurrentScan.Value = ""
After making some corrections on the scanned data I basically write it to a sheet in the workbook. Then I also have a pivot table in the same workbook which uses this scanned data as source and counts how many parts scanned from each part number.
2. Current Status: This ListBox contains all the part numbers scanned (Coming from the pivot table mentioned above) and waiting to be scanned (Coming from another worksheet). Then it refreshes it self every time a new part is scanned.
3. ListBox Scroll Bar: Since I have very long part number list it is not possible for me to fit everything on the screen that is why listbox creates this scroll bar.
Enough with the background I think :)
So if we come to my concern. Since my collages using cordless scanner to do this operation sometimes they don't have the chance to see the screen so they can not understand if the cursor is on the "Scanned Part Number Text Box" or not. That is why I need focus to be on that box no matter what happens (Of course we can not do anything if warehouse burns down, earth quake or tsunami hits the place but let do not think about those).
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
First of all I disabled all the remaining objects from properties window
Then I diabled tab stops of all controls:
Dim contr As Control
For Each contr In ScannerInterface.Controls
On Error Resume Next
contr.TabStop = False
Next
ScannerInterface.PN_CurrentScan.TabStop = True
Added setfocus property to all button clicks:
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
Added setfocus property to listbox click:
Private Sub CurrentStatus_List_Click()
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
End Sub
Added set focus to enter and exit events of listbox however this did not work:
Private Sub CurrentStatus_List_Enter()
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
End Sub
Private Sub CurrentStatus_List_Exit(ByVal Cancel As MSForms.ReturnBoolean)
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus
End Sub
So, with all these counter measures I have managed to improve up to somepoint, only concern remaining is when I click on the scroll bar next to the listbox, text box lose focus and without clicking in the textbox I could not manage to set the focus again. I tried all events with listbox non of them worked. Is there any way to solve this problem or do I need to deal with this? Thanks in advance for your supports.
SOLUTION:
Thanks to #Rory we have managed to solve my problem. As he noticed and explained in the answer below, both my textbox and listbox were in frames. I have tried several setfocus options but I always gave the focus to the textbox. However, solution was to give the focus to the frame which was containing the target textbox:
Private Sub CurrentStatus_Frame_Enter() '<-- Enter event of the frame which contains listbox
Me.PN_CurrentScan.SetFocus '<-- Setfocus to target textbox
Me.Scanned_Frame.SetFocus '<-- Setfocus to frame which contains target textbox
End Sub
Having (eventually) noticed that both of your controls are inside container Frame controls, you can actually use the Enter event of the Frame that contains the listbox to set focus to the Frame that contains the textbox, rather than to the textbox itself.
I am making a database with access 2007. I have a form for the call center to enter customer info; Name, Address, Phone Number, ect.
There is a field for credit card numbers and while we are supposed to enter them as first 4 numbers and last for number ie.1234xxxxxxxx4321
I want to make sure if they do enter them in that it keeps the first and last 4 numbers but changes other characters to "x" when the field loses focus. Could anyone point me in the right direction of how to do this?
Thanks in advance for all help in this matter.
If you are only storing the first 4 and last 4 digits then the following works. Modify the function validCreditCardNumber() to have whatever checks you want to apply.
Function validCreditCardNumber(creditCardNumber) As Boolean
If Len(creditCardNumber) = 12 Then
validCreditCardNumber = True
Else
validCreditCardNumber = False
End If
End Function
Private Sub cbxCreditCardNumber_LostFocus()
If validCreditCardNumber(cbxCreditCardNumber) Then
cbxCreditCardNumber.Text = Left(cbxCreditCardNumber.Text, 4) & "xxxxxxxx" & Right(cbxCreditCardNumber.Text, 4)
End If
End Sub
If you want to store the entire number but only hide the digits from the screen then I think a input masks are what you are looking for.
All you need is something like this in your form code.
Private Sub txtCC_LostFocus()
txtCC.Text = Left(txtCC, 4) & String(8, "x") & Right(txtCC, 4)
End Sub
Then what you see is what will get stored in the DB. ie.1234xxxxxxxx4321
I'm going to assume you don't want to actually keep the whole CC# in your DB. That is a huge no-no unless you spend massive time & money to meet PCI compliance. Here's some info on PCI: http://www.pcicomplianceguide.org/pcifaqs.php
There is no input mask available for partial masking of a string entry. You will need to use a custom function to change the data entered. The best way to do this would probably be to link the field in the table to a hidden textbox. You can then have a visible textbox apply some function to the value in the hidden textbox to change the characters to "X" in the LostFocus event of the visible textbox. However, it's also going to have to write the data to the hidden textbox when you change it.
