I have a String column from a temp view, were dates values are stored in format of '2020/01/01'.
I do need to convert that field to a date value to be stored into a Delta table in 'YYY-MM-DD' format.
I've been trying different kind of SQL functions but none of them seems to works, as a result, every function retrieves a null value:
select to_date(dateField, 'yyyy-MM-dd'),
CAST(dateField as date),
etc..
from TMP_table
Every function results in a null value, and there's no information about that into Databricks documentation.
As Usagi said above, select to_date(dateField, 'yyyy/MM/dd') AS date works perfectly.

I am reading a file from ADLS location, in that one column Period_Ending_Date is having data type as STRING.
The Period_Ending_Date is having many dates in random order, I need to apply filter to get the latest date.
I'm trying this code:
select * from final_table
WHERE Period_Ending_Date = (SELECT MAX(Period_Ending_Date) FROM final_table)
But the problem is I'm getting the day with maximum, not the latest date. I can understand this is happening because of STRING data type. Please guide me how I can change this column to DATE data type or any other alternative to get the solution of this.
I'm working with Scala and SQL on Azure Databricks.
what about changing SELECT MAX(Period_Ending_Date) FROM final_table to SELECT MAX(cast(Period_Ending_Date as date)) FROM final_table - performing explicit casting to date if date format is ISO8601 (YYYY-MM-DD) or using the to_date function (doc) to convert non-standard dates.
Based on the example mentioned here in the Snowflake documentation, why are the date and timestamp values returning different values just by changing the ORDER BY clause? Also, I am trying to convert a string to a date format which is not returning correct results in Snowflake while this works fine in other SQL based Engines. Need help from experts on this.
This query
SELECT '20200710', TO_DATE('20200710');
is returning the following output
20200710 | 1970-08-22
Also tried:
SELECT TO_DATE('20200710', 'YYYY-MM-DD');
and got the error:
Can't parse '20200710' as date with format 'YYYY-MM-DD'
To convert to a date data type, you would use:
SELECT TO_DATE('20200710', 'YYYYMMDD')
I would recommend just keeping the date data type. But if you want a string in the format YYYY-MM-DD:
SELECT TO_CHAR(TO_DATE('20200710', 'YYYYMMDD'), 'YYYY-MM-DD')
I have a numeric data in a column 20170930, need help in converting it into Date in PostgreSQL , tried multiple ways but non seems to work
You can convert to a string and then to a date:
select column::text::date
You can also express this using explicit cast() syntax:
select cast(cast(20170930 as text) as date)
Use one of the following :
SELECT cast(yourcol::varchar as date ) as dt1, yourcol::varchar::date as dt2
where dt1 and dt2 values of type date, and yourcol is a numeric value such as 20170930
Demo
The best thing is to change column datatype into Date type,
ALTER TABLE table_name
ADD column_name Date;
As shown above, PostgreSQL supports a full set of SQL date and time types, as shown in the table below. Dates are counted according to the Gregorian calendar. Here, all the types have a resolution of 1 microsecond / 14 digits except date type, whose resolution is day.
Please try below query
SELECT to_date(column::varchar,'YYYYMMDD')
For anybody who fell into my pitfall I tried this but my numeric was like a 'seconds past 01-01-1970 format' rather than YYYYMMDD
This worked
SELECT to_timestamp(yourcol) as numeric_column_now_date
from yourtable
see here
https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/functions-datetime.html#FUNCTIONS-DATETIME-ZONECONVERT
When casting from a varchar data type to a date datatype, my query results are altering the day of the original field. For example, the below two queries
select to_Date('2017-12-15 00:11:10.167664+00', 'YYYY-MM-DD')
select '2017-12-15 00:11:10.167664+00'::date
return a value of "2017-12-14". I am querying a vertica database using DataGrip.
You can just take the leftmost 10 characters of the string and then convert to date, e.g.:
SELECT TO_DATE(LEFT('2017-12-15 00:11:10.167664+00',10), 'YYYY-MM-DD')
I have a column in my table with Dates in the format yyyy-mm-dd I want to convert all the dates in that column to the format mm/dd/yyyy
I am using the below query
UPDATE Test.dbo.Status
SET DateIn = CONVERT(DATE,DateIn ,101)
The DateIn column is defined as Date in my table (DateIn DATE NULL)
The query does no change to the data. am I doing some thing wrong here?
You can change the default format in which SQL Server displays a date, but you can't alter the way a DATE value is stored via CONVERT(). You can format a date however you want if you store it as a string, but you lose functionality when you do that and it's not advisable. If you are hell-bent on storing a formatted version, you might want to create a new VARCHAR() field so you can preserve your DATE version.
You're better off formatting the date at the application level.
The reason your query does nothing is that the actual DATE values are equivalent. Notice when you take any valid date format and CAST() it as DATE the resulting format is the same regardless of the input:
SELECT CAST('20040510' AS DATE)
SELECT CAST('2004-05-10' AS DATE)
SELECT CAST('May 10, 2004' AS DATE)
All return: 2004-05-10 on my instance of SQL Server.
