Can you deploy a Sheets addon and run it as an admin or service account? - api

I have created a sheets sidebar addon which allows a user to select a group and update members based on a column in a sheet.
When I run it as my admin account, everything works; however, when a normal G Suite user runs the addon, they run into issues as the api I'm using to add users to the group is the Admin SDK Directory.
This is the error when I try to run as a normal G Suite user - "GoogleJsonResponseException: API call to directory.members.delete failed with error: Not Authorized to access this resource/api"

This works fine in a web app if I deploy to run as an admin.
Any guidance or tip would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you cannot give a user running the Add-on permissions which that user does not have.
If you want the user to run the script, you need to assign him / his organization unit respective roles or privileges from the User Admin Console.
I suggest that you create a custom administrator role to give the user only the permissions they need to run the Addon.
If you are looking into running Apps Script with a service account, you'll need to install the OAuth2 library and perform UrlFetchApp.fetch() calls with JSON requests.

GitHub API individual user mirrored permissions to only organization resources

TLDR -
I want users of my employer's organization who install my CLI tool to be able to use it to run commands that use the GitHub rest api that require permissions the user doesn't personally have, while restricting the user from using the CLI tool to perform unintended actions with the elevated permissions needed by the CLI tool. Is there a way to create a CLI tool that 1. uses permissions the users of the CLI tool don't have while at the same time 2. prevents those users from using the CLI tool's elevated permissions to perform unintended actions?

I'm building a CLI tool for my employer's organization so that the organization members can automatically create a new branch and simultaneously add branch protection and create a PR. As far as I know, updating branch protection with the GitHub API requires admin access. However, not all of the users who use this CLI tool will personally have those permissions for their user account. But a user in the organization should still be able to use the CLI tool (which uses permissions the user potentially doesn't have).
I thought about using a personal access token so that the users aren't using a single set of centralized credentials (github app creds), but then the CLI tool would have access to at least one of the user's personal repositories and potentially wouldn't have the required permissions required by the CLI tool.
So is there a way to build a tool as a package that can be installed on a users machine that...
has permissions that the user of the tool potentially doesn't have and
prevents the user from doing anything unintended. e.g. the tool (which has admin permissions) can add branch protection rules, but the user shouldn't be able to use the tool's elevated permissions for anything else - e.g. getting the interaction limits for an organization
prevents the user from using the tool in any organization repo they don't have access to.
Ok, that's the gist of it, but I will go into more detail in case that helps.
So currently I'm using a GitHub app and giving it the required permissions (e.g. admin read/write for branch protection rules). I'm using octokit to authenticate to the GitHub API with the GitHub App. To do this, I'm passing in the app id, private key, and the installation id.

This isn't ideal because then the user who installs the package needs those environment variables to be authenticated. And once they have those creds, they would be able to use them to do other things they potentially don't have permissions for (e.g. with the admin read/write permission the GitHub app has permissions for). So my thought is to have the user provide the authentication credentials that aren't the Github app credentials. This way, each user is using different credentials they provide. As for the reasons stated above, personal access tokens cannot be used. So the ideal situation is as follows -
A user installs the package - npm i my-github-cli-tool.

They generate credentials and put them into a custom env file e.g. .env.cli_tool.
They use the CLI tool to create a new branch in an organization repo they have access to, create the branch protection rules (with the admin read/write access that the user doesn't have, but the credentials in step 2 has).
If the user tries to alter the cli tool or use the credentials in step 2 to use it to access repos they don't have access to or perform other actions with the admin read/write permissions, they shouldn't be able to.
If I stick with using the GitHub app, the source code on the user's machine has to get the credentials somehow. And those credentials need to have elevated permissions that the user might not have. So if these credentials are exposed to the source code on the user's machine, doesn't that mean the user can just grab those credentials and use them for nefarious purposes?

When using the Get-AzRoleAssignment command, it will call the Azure AD Graph - getObjectsByObjectIds meanwhile to validate the objects in Azure AD.
To solve the issue, make sure your user account logged in the cloud shell has permission to call the API, if your user account type is member, it will has the permission by default. So I suppose your user account is a guest, if so, there are two ways.
1.Navigate to the Azure Active Directory in the portal -> User settings -> click Manage external collaboration settings -> select the first option like below.
2.Navigate to the Azure Active Directory in the portal -> Roles and administrators -> search for Directory readers -> click it -> Add assignments -> add your user account as a Directory readers role.
Just select any of the options above, then the command will work fine.
For anyone coming to this thread after some searching: I had the same issue with this call across multiple versions of the AZ.Resources module: 2.5.0, 4.1.0 an 5.6.0. All my rights where setup correctly, both for an SPN and a user, both got the same error.
Changing the call to use the Azure CLI and that just works 😠.

VSTS login fails with 401 not authorized - [user] has multiple accounts associated with it

I try to give new users in our domain access to our VSTS. We have MSDN enterprise subscriptions via MPN. The subscription is assigned and visible for the user if he logs in my.visualstudio.com with his work account. If the user tries to access the VSTS at [ourprojects].visualstudio.com he gets “VSTS login fails with 401 not authorized – [user] has multiple accounts associated with it. Your work or school account does not have access to [ourprojects].visualstudio.com, but your personal account does have access. “.
Signing in with the personal account as suggested by the error message leads to another error: “This Microsoft account does not exist.” This is correct. The account in charge is definitely a work account in Microsoft Azure Active Directory. So the first error message is somehow strange and leads into the wrong direction.
Our domain accounts are synchronized with Azure Active Directory (AAD). I can see the new users both in our domain and AAD. The user can login into my.visualstudio.com with his work account. So sync with Windows Server AD and AAD looks working correctly. MSDN assignment works, too.
Loggin into my.visualstudio.com redirects to the login page of our domain. thsi is corect and works fine. But this redirect does not take place loggin into VSTS.
For other older accounts in our domain VSTS access with work account works completely fine. Has anybody experienced similar problems?
Finally I talked to Microsoft support. It turned out that this VSTS account is not backed by Azure Active Directory. It has to be converted to do so.
To check if a Azure DevOps/VSTS account is backed by AAD, you can look in the settings page ("gears"->Settings) of Azure DevOps at the very bottom.

"Could not update the configuration for app" error message when adding Office365 Unified Application permissions

I want to get started with the Office365 Unified API , so I decided to register a new web app to our azure directory.
In the section: "permissions to other applications" , I select Office365 unified API(preview)
I only get set delegated permission (I don't have all admin powers in our tenant), so I choose the ones I need (user profiles, sign-in , the exact number does not matter).
When I save the configuration I get the message
Could not update the configuration for app ""
Information tells me:
Unauthorized. You do not have sufficient permissions to access this resource.
The strange is , that when I log out and return to the application in the Azure Portal, I do see those modification in the configuration ?!
Finally when I try to call the REST endpoint (with valid Accesstoken etc..) I get this message:

So maybe the Azure Portal UI is right the first time and those permissions where never stored with the app ?

Access the directory as you is a permission that requires admin consent. The portal unfortunately has a bug that it appears as though you have the permission, but that's not true. That's because there are 2 elements here - configuring the permissions your app needs which drives the consent experience AND the consent grant. The portal (under the covers) tries to consent the app for the permissions it requires within the developer tenant. A non-admin in this case has permissions to update the app configuration, but not to consent for those permissions in their tenant.

It is impossible to set permissions to Office 365 Unified API for your application even if you are tenant administrator due to error. I have tried it. Remember that whole Unified API is in Preview mode so there will definitely be other errors.

Jenkins restrict access to only Google Apps Domain users using OpenID Authentication

Using the Jenkins OpenID plugin I'm able to configure Jenkins to use my Google Apps OpenID as a provider. Anonymous users are still able to access that application (they have read access only), but I want to have it so that users are forced to login using the Google App domain or they are denied access.
I'm currently using the Jenkins Authorization setting of "Logged in users can do anything", I've tried using the "Matrix based authentication" and denying anonymous users, assuming logged in users would still have permissions, is there a special group value I can use for "logged in users" in matrix based authentication?
It seems like "Matrix-based security" will only work for specific users when using Google Apps OpenID (I don't believe Google apps for domains has support for OpenIDTeam extension
Yes there is a special group you can use to do this but finding the information about how to do it isn't obvious.
If you hover over the 'Overall - Read' column on the Matrix-based security table you'll get the solution.

The read permission is necessary for viewing almost all pages of Jenkins. This permission is useful when you don't want unauthenticated users to see Jenkins pages - revoke this permission from the anonymous user, then add "authenticated" pseudo-user and grant the read access.
I use the following technique in combination with the OpenID plugin which allows me to specify a Google Apps for Business domain to secure Jenkins with
Warning: Make sure you've got a backup of your installation before you start because if you get something wrong you may lock yourself out of your Jenkins. Unpicking the plugins and settings would take longer than just restoring from a backup.
Ensure your choice of OpenID provider is still working ok with your current 'Logged in users can do anything' setting
Select the 'Matrix based-security' mode for Authorization
Add a new 'authenticated' group (lower case 'a') to the Matrix-based security table.
Use the 'check all' icon at the right hand end of the new 'authenticated' row to tick all the permission boxes.
Use the 'check all' icon at the right hand end of the 'Anonymous' row to untick all the permission boxes.
Save the settings
Reload Jenkins
Now each time a user wants to see Jenkins they have to be already signed into their Google Account and no-one can get to see any Job names or views without login.
