While I am trying to set my value to between the user given start date and end date for a query, I am running into a run-time error 3071 (The expression is typed incorrectly or it is too complex)
This is being used to pass a user given variable from a form to a query

Don't use *, it is for use with Like.
Consider assigning NULL condition to corresponding column via NZ() which sets column equal to itself and so avoids filtering any rows by that respective condition. Asterisks alone does not evaluate to a boolean condition unless using LIKE operator.

so I'm building a SCD type 2 in snowflake, but it ignores the where clause in which is comparision between "to_timestamp" and "expiry_date". Expiry_date is a variable that is set to '9999-08-17 07:31:29.901000000' (as infinity) and To_timestamp is a column in table. I want to query only the rows that have to_timestamp set to infinity (they are still active) but snowflake seems to ignore this part of where clause. Below is some of the code (it should update the rows that are expired - that means change their "to_timestamp" to current time. and it does but it does to rows with timestamps of all kind - it ignores last line)

I have two of these update statements (one for updates and one for deletes) and a merge statement for inserts. And it ignores the comparision in every single one, updating the rows that have "to_timestamp" set to something like "2021-08-24 07:11:53.510000000". I've tried every combination possible (between ... and ..., >= ... <=, <=, >=, comparing in "case" statement of update,...) - nothing. What could be the cause/solution?
As we do not know the structure of CUSTOMER_TARGET I would suggest to explicitly set the data type of EXPIRY_DATE_NTZ variable to match the column data type:

By doing that way there are no "implicit conversions" involved in the process.
Another advice is usage of IS DISTINCT FROM instead of <>. IS DISTINCT FROM is NULL safe, which is important if columns are defined as nullable.

Your SQL does not have any issues with the filters (ORs are surrounded by the brackets etc). I assume that you have checked the execution profile, and did not see your filter (CT.TO_TIMESTAMP = '9999-08-17 07:31:29.901000000'). In this case, all rows in the target table should have this value in the column TO_TIMESTAMP.
I highly recommend you check the data first. If you are running multiple UPDATE/MERGE commands, you may miss that the data has already updated with this value.
I have the following update query in MS Access 2013

This works until the end date in the range is not found. For instance, if 5/7/2004 is not in the data set, then the update continues to the next end date, in this case 4/30/2005.
I would prefer it ended on the last date in the range. For instance, if the data ended on 4/21/2004, that would be last field updated between 11/16/ and 5/7/2004. The query would then continue to update again beginning on 10/30/2004.

You're missing some parentheses that are affecting the evaluation order, causing the behavior that you're reporting.
What you want is for each of the BETWEEN portions to be evaluated completely before the OR option is evaluated, and you need to make sure that evaluation is done by surrounding the BETWEEN expressions in parentheses to guarantee the evaluation order.
This should correct it (untested, as you've not provided the test data necessary to create a test case).

I'm working with a access database and vb6. My table has a field named "InvoiceDate" which is a text field. I'm not allowed to make database modifications. So I guess my only option is to change the text field into a date/time field in my query. I found several methods to do so. They are as follows.

But those 4 methods didn't work. I can't figure out this.

is correct, so the error message indicates, that one or more of your text dates in InvoiceDate don't represent a valid date, like 2015-06-31 or Null.
Run a query to check this:
Select *, IsDate(InvoiceDate) As ValidDate From Invoice
and see if any of the values of ValidDate are False.
To ignore the extra colon:
DateValue(Replace(Invoice.InvoiceDate, ": ", " ")) Between #2015/01/01# And #2016/01/01#
I have a report with a table in Rails where users can optionally set filters like selecting a location or picking a range of dates and update the table via an ajax request.
Can I write this where clause so that it any date/blanks or all locations?

The query above fails on blanks (e.g., "") and if I put nils they translate to nulls in the SQL.
To solve this problem right now I have a bunch of conditional statements that check whether value is present in the ajax request and then creates a different where clause depending on the case. My current conditionals are unwieldy, error prone and not scalable.
Searches on things like "wildcard sql" end up leading me to text searches (i.e., %) which I don't think fits in this case.
I am running on Rails 3.2 with postgresql.

Let's say I want a JasperReport that lets the user filter on a date if they so wish. The SQL is as follows:

Now, I don't want to filter by some date if they didn't pass the date in. I found the following kludge that people use:
select * from foo where bar = $P{bar} $P!{some.date.fragment}
And the some.date.fragment parameter is defined with the following default:

This is not working as the toString doesn't output the date in a format that my SQL server understands. I would like to have the conditional still use a prepared statement with the jdbc driver and toss the parameter in, I just want the prepared statement to be dependent on if the parameter is null or not. Can this be done?
Before you have used the $P!{} expression the JDBC-Driver does all formatting for you.
But if you use the $P!{} expression you have to format yourself.
Something like this should work:

Depending on your data type you have to customize dd.MM.yyyy HH:mm:ss.SSS.
If you don't want to use the $P!{} expression you can avoid it with the solution below.
I personally don't like this way. It also may cause a bad execution plan.
If don't want to use $P!{} because you worry about sql injection. It's needless as long your parameter $P{some.date} contains a safe data type like java.lang.Date.
Create a parameter. Let's call it ${is_null_pram} and add a default expression with param class Integer:
($P{some.date} == null ? 1 : 0)
Now you can query:

bar = $P{bar}

some_date > $P{some.date}
OR 1 = $P{is_null_pram}

I think you can use the function:
$X{EQUAL, <column_name>, <parameter_name>}
It optimizes the query as you can see in this help page.
