I need to convert an integer to a date format in AS400.
I have the field called ivdat8, which is integer in the formatted YYYYMMDD.
I need to use a WHERE clause to select data between two dates, today and 3 days ago.
I am using the below line to do this:
Where
ivdat8 Between (Select current date - 3 days from sysibm.sysdummy1) And (Select current date from sysibm.sysdummy1)
The current date from sysibm is a true date format, but ivdat is integer.
How can i cast ivdat8 to be a date format i can use within the WHERE clause ?
I have tried the below to convert the int to date:
cast(cast(A.ivdat8 as varchar(50)) as date)
&
TIMESTAMP_FORMAT(ivdat8,'YYYYMMDD')
Actually it's better for performance not to convert the ivdat8 column data, but do this with parameters like below.
select ivdat8
from table (values
int(to_char(current date - 2 days, 'YYYYMMDD'))
, int(to_char(current date - 5 days, 'YYYYMMDD'))
) t (ivdat8)
where ivdat8 between
int(to_char(current date - 3 days, 'YYYYMMDD'))

Easiest way to do it without causing a complicated conversion in the query is to use this:
cast(digits(cast(A.ivdat8 as dec(8))) || '000000' as date)
The full where clause doesn't need to select from sysibm.dummy1 either.
where cast(digits(cast(A.ivdat8 as dec(8))) || '000000' as date) between current date - 3 days and current date
If you have indexes built on ivdat8 though, the fastest selection will be:
where A.ivdat8 between cast(Current date - 3 days as dec(8)) and cast(Current Date as dec(8))
Managed to convert the int to a date, first i had to cast it as a string, then use TO_DATE
To_Date(cast(A.ivdat8 as varchar(50)),"YYYYMMDD")
try this
Where cast(TIMESTAMP_FORMAT(cast(ivdat8 as varchar(8)), 'YYYYMMDD') as date)

I'm having issues in my WHERE clause selecting data from a specific day to today's date. The day/time format in my date column is '7/2/2020 3:12:08 PM'.
I've tested a couple options but keep getting this error - 'literal does not match format string'.
Any idea's of how I can select all data from March 1, 2020 to current date?

In Oracle date columns are not strings, they are exactly in date datatype, so you don't need to convert/cast it. Just use simple date literals:

I am working out of Oracle SQL. I have some dates that may have been poorly formatted when loading.
I'm doing a basic Max(date)-Min(Date) to get the difference in days. My results are:
+000000156 00:00:00.000000
+000000149 00:00:00.000000

I want to do some basic math with these date differences (average, etc) but I get an error message.
How do I convert these strings into numbers?
My guess is that the columns are timestamps, not dates, as the results are intervals not numbers. As you've found, Oracle have not got around to overloading the standard aggregate functions for intervals (vote for this feature on the Oracle Database Ideas forum) and currently you still have to either write your own or cast the timestamps to dates.

if you have a string or number and it can be the n-th day of the year (for instance 156),
you can transform in date with TO_DATE('156', 'DDD')
if you have a string with a particular format, you can transform it in date with
TO_DATE(string, format of the date you imagine)

You can use the TO_DATE(…) function to treat the VARCHAR column as a formatted date type, and the EXTRACT(…) function to retrieve just the month out of the date.
If your date string is formatted in a well-known manner, TO_DATE's automatic parsing (or a direct cast using the :: operator) will suffice, and you can write your query this way:
SELECT * FROM table

EXTRACT(month, TO_DATE(varcharCol)) = 6 -- June of every year
AND EXTRACT(year, varcharCol::DATE) = 2020; -- June of 2020 alone
Alternatively, if the date is in a non-standard format, use available formatting options to make TO_DATE(…) parse it properly:

First of all, you shouldn't store dates as strings. But you probably know that.
If you do store dates as strings, you store them all in one particular format, say, 'mm/dd/yyyy'. So, use a substring function to get the month digits.
For 'mm/dd/yyyy':
where substring(date_string, 1, 2) = '06'
For 'yyyy-mm-dd':
where substring(date_string, 9, 2) = '06'
In many situations you can also use LIKE:
For 'mm/dd/yyyy':
where date_string like '06%'

Looking at other question with the same error on StackOverflow I see the solution usually is to use the to_date function which I am doing so I am unsure why this is occuring. The datewhen field is of type Date.
Do not use to_date() with the columnes of DATE data type. to_date() converts character string to a value of DATE data type. It makes no sense to convert the DATE to DATE. In a first step datewhen column of type DATE will be implicitly converted into a character data type by using the default date format (that's most probably not 'yyyy-mm-dd') and this is the culprit of the ORA-01830 error.
So your statement should look something like this:
select id from mytable where id = :p_id and (trunc(sysdate) - trunc(datewhen)) < 365;
I'd calculate the difference in the months or years instead of days:
... where months_between(sysdate, datewhen) < 12
If your datewhen column is char/varchar formatted as yyyy-mm-dd then you have to do the to_date conversion on datewhen, but not on SYSDATE: it's already a date and doesn't need to be converted.
To filter on a date within the past 365 days, compare it to SYSDATE - 365:
select id
from mytable
where id = :p_id
and to_date(datewhen, 'yyyy-mm-dd') > sysdate - 365;
But a year isn't always 365 days: on leap years it's 366 days. To get a one year ago value that's always correct, subtract an interval of one year from the current date:
select id
from mytable
where id = :p_id
and datewhen > sysdate - interval '1' year;
One more thing: the Oracle DATE type isn't just a date; it's a date and a time. SYSDATE returns the current date and time. Try this query:
select to_char(sysdate, 'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss') from dual;
Unless you run this at exactly midnight you'll see a time component as well.
Say your query runs on 2 September 2017 at 10 AM and you're looking for a date within the past year. You'd expect to get the date 3 September 2016, but you wouldn't because at 10 AM SYSDATE is 3 September 2016 at 10:00:00. That's greater than the plain date 3 September 2016, which is 3 September 2016 at 0:00:00, so records with a datewhen of `2016-09-03' won't be included.
To ignore the time component of an Oracle DATE value, use TRUNC. Your final query should look something like this:
select id
from mytable
where id = :p_id
and datewhen > trunc(sysdate) - interval '1' year;
