I am not able to resolve RemoteWebDriver in eclipse due issues in maven dependency. I need RemoteWebDriver to get the browser version (for reporting purpose). I have mentioned the following maven dependencies yet I am not able to resolve RemoteWebDriver. As per the earlier post The import org.openqa.selenium.remote.CapabilityType cannot be resolved I have to manually download selenium-standalone-server. I am not understanding as to why maven dependency is not sufficient? Is there any other maven dependency that can be added to resolve RemoteWebDriver
<dependency>
<groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-java</artifactId>
<version>3.141.59</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-remote-driver</artifactId>
<version>3.141.59</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-server</artifactId>
<version>3.141.59</version>
</dependency>
*************************
//Below is what I am trying to code
Capabilities cap = ((RemoteWebDriver) driver).getCapabilities();
String browserName = cap.getBrowserName().toLowerCase();
It is quite enough to have only selenium-java, it will resolve selenium-remote-driver via Maven transitive dependency mechanism
Given you mention that you have to manually download Selenium Standalone Server you don't need this selenium-server dependency as well
So it should be as simple as:
pom.xml:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"

<artifactId>selenium-java</artifactId>
<version>3.141.59</version>
</dependency>
</dependencies>
</project>
Test class:
import org.openqa.selenium.Capabilities;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.DesiredCapabilities;
import org.openqa.selenium.remote.RemoteWebDriver;
import java.net.URL;
public class SeleniumTest {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
System.setProperty("webdriver.chrome.driver", "c:/apps/webdriver/chromedriver.exe");
DesiredCapabilities capabilities = DesiredCapabilities.chrome();
RemoteWebDriver driver = new RemoteWebDriver(new URL("http://localhost:4444/wd/hub"), capabilities);
Capabilities cap = driver.getCapabilities();
String browserName = cap.getBrowserName().toLowerCase();
System.out.println(browserName);
driver.quit();
}
}

Goal - I want to be able to write selenium tests, using Junit 5, and testcontainers. I am writing a very simple code to just be able to check an attribute of the search bar of google's homepage.
Issue - chrome.getWebDriver(); returns null. Am I missing something?
exception - java.lang.NullPointerException: Cannot invoke "org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver.manage()" because "driver" is null.
this is caused as I try to set an implicit wait after initializing WebDriver.
my pom.xml -

My test class -
#TestInstance(Lifecycle.PER_CLASS)

In case you need it, the google drive link for the code
got my mistake, if using junit5, fields should be private static final I think...
I was still using public...

Problem Statement Analysis -
Using vimal, avenstack and adapter dependencies all together in pom.xml which is not advisable and expected. One shall use vimal or avenstack or both together in specific use case or use adapter dependency only. Please follow below instructions.
Adding direct & transitive dependencies together from info.cukes & io.cucumber dependencies. Doing so can cause unpredictable outcome. Now let's move.
Vimal Selvam Library: Below is the required maven dependency and a sample test to demonstrate how configuration set up is done.
Maven Dependency
<dependency>
<groupId>com.vimalselvam</groupId>
<artifactId>cucumber-extentsreport</artifactId>
<version>3.1.1</version>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>com.aventstack</groupId>
<artifactId>extentreports</artifactId>
<version>4.0.9</version>
</dependency>
Please note that Java 8+ and adding the dependency of ExtentReport v3.1.1+ is mandatory.
Cucumber Runner File
#RunWith(Cucumber.class)
#CucumberOptions(
features = {"src/test/resources/features"},
glue = {"com.cucumber.stepdefinitions"},
plugin = {"com.cucumber.listener.ExtentCucumberFormatter:output/report.html"}
)
public class RunCukesTest {
#AfterClass
public static void teardown() {
Reporter.loadXMLConfig(new File("src/test/resources/extent-config.xml"));
Reporter.setSystemInfo("user", System.getProperty("user.name"));
Reporter.setSystemInfo("os", "Mac OSX");
Reporter.setTestRunnerOutput("Sample test runner output message");
}
}
The above setup will generate the report in output directory with the name of report.html.
Please remove adapter dependency from pom.xml. We shall use vimal/avenstack or extent adapter but not all together.
Extent Adapter: Beauty is, you do not need to write any code any where to generate report this way except from setting adapter in runner below.
Maven Dependency
<dependency>
<groupId>com.aventstack</groupId>
<artifactId>extentreports-cucumber4-adapter</artifactId>
<version>1.0.6</version>
</dependency>
Add the com.aventstack.extentreports.cucumber.adapter.ExtentCucumberAdapter plugin to the runner.
#RunWith(Cucumber.class)
#CucumberOptions(plugin = {"com.aventstack.extentreports.cucumber.adapter.ExtentCucumberAdapter:"})
public class RunCukesTest {
// ..
}
Report Output Directory - ../Project Directory/test-output/HtmlReport
Additional Note: In future, we would request you to use Cucumber v>=4.0.0 as you are using pretty old dependency(v1.2.5) of Cucumber.
For doing so, you can add below set of cucumber minimal dependencies.
<dependency>
<groupId>io.cucumber</groupId>
<artifactId>cucumber-junit</artifactId>
<version>4.2.6</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
<dependency>
<groupId>io.cucumber</groupId>
<artifactId>cucumber-picocontainer</artifactId>
<version>4.2.6</version>
<scope>test</scope>
</dependency>
Since you are using cucumber 4 version, you should be using the plugin - "com.aventstack.extentreports.cucumber.adapter.ExtentCucumberAdapter:"
cucumber-java & cucumber-junit dependency should be 4.2.6 version on your POM.
see adapter documentation- http://extentreports.com/docs/versions/4/java/cucumber4.html for more details & examples.
I'm unable to run my runner file in eclipse as eclipse says Step -'User is already on loginpage' does not have a matching glue code on my feature file.
Also when I close and open the feature file eclipse says- An internal error occurred during: "Scanning for step definitions".
java.lang.NullPointerException
When I run the runner file Ecipse shows the below error
You can implement missing steps with the snippets below:
#Given("^User is already on loginpage$")
public void user_is_already_on_loginpage() throws Throwable {
// Write code here that turns the phrase above into concrete actions
throw new PendingException();
} .....
I have tried specifying the path to my feature file and step definition file in so many different ways, but nothing has worked.

The issue is with your glue code, remove the "/" before "src". Due to this, runner can't find your step definition file.
Changes should be: glue={"src/main/java/stepDefinitions/LogInStepDefinition.java"}
And for the issue: "Scanning for step definitions". java.lang.NullPointerException.
In the LogInStepDefinition.java file, add these individual imports:
import cucumber.api.java.en.Given;
import cucumber.api.java.en.Then;
import cucumber.api.java.en.When;
Instead of:
import cucumber.api.java.en.*;
Once changed as above, close and reopen the feature file in eclipse.

I can't seem to find the table Breed or Dog anywhere in the database. I tried to enable persistence storage to true, but I didn't know how to do it, the api for version 2.4.0 is not same as what's on the web site right now.
e.g I tried
Ignite ignite = Ignition.start();
ignite.cluster().active(true);
it didn't help.
How would I start bin/ignite.sh and activate cluster for it by using bin/control.sh --activate and then make my example above write to it?
Thanks & regards

I have created maven project for library dependency following is my pom.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd">
<modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion>
<groupId>com.in.jagran</groupId>
<artifactId>GenPdfApp</artifactId>
<version>1.0-SNAPSHOT</version>
<packaging>jar</packaging>
<properties>
<project.build.sourceEncoding>UTF-8</project.build.sourceEncoding>
<maven.compiler.source>1.7</maven.compiler.source>
<maven.compiler.target>1.7</maven.compiler.target>
</properties>
<repositories>

</repository>
</repositories>
<dependencies>

but my project not found com.itextpdf.samples.GenericTest
so my question is what am i missing?
what is the purpose of GenericTest Class?
You don't need GenericTest. That class is used for our own testing purposes. Remove all references to GenericTest and just execute the main method.
package com.itextpdf.samples.sandbox.fonts;
import com.itextpdf.io.font.PdfEncodings;
import com.itextpdf.kernel.font.PdfFont;
import com.itextpdf.kernel.font.PdfFontFactory;
import com.itextpdf.kernel.pdf.PdfDocument;
import com.itextpdf.kernel.pdf.PdfWriter;
import com.itextpdf.layout.Document;
import com.itextpdf.layout.element.Paragraph;
import com.itextpdf.layout.element.Text;
import com.itextpdf.layout.property.BaseDirection;
import com.itextpdf.licensekey.LicenseKey;
import java.io.File;
public class ArabicExample {
public static final String ARABIC
= "السعر الاجمالي";
public static final String DEST
= "./target/test/resources/sandbox/fonts/arabic_example.pdf";
public static final String FONT
= "./src/test/resources/font/NotoNaskhArabic-Regular.ttf";
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
File file = new File(DEST);
file.getParentFile().mkdirs();
new ArabicExample().manipulatePdf(DEST);
}
#Override
protected void manipulatePdf(String dest) throws Exception {
//Load the license file to use advanced typography features
LicenseKey.loadLicenseFile(System.getenv("ITEXT7_LICENSEKEY") + "/itextkey-typography.xml");
PdfDocument pdfDoc = new PdfDocument(new PdfWriter(dest));
Document doc = new Document(pdfDoc);
PdfFont f = PdfFontFactory.createFont(FONT, PdfEncodings.IDENTITY_H);
Paragraph p = new Paragraph("This is auto detection: ");
p.add(new Text(ARABIC).setFont(f));
p.add(new Text(": 50.00 USD"));
doc.add(p);
p = new Paragraph("This is correct manual property: ").setBaseDirection(BaseDirection.LEFT_TO_RIGHT).setFontScript(Character.UnicodeScript.ARABIC);
p.add(new Text(ARABIC).setFont(f));
p.add(new Text(": 50.00"));
doc.add(p);
doc.close();
}
}
I removed the following stuff:
import com.itextpdf.samples.GenericTest;
import com.itextpdf.test.annotations.type.SampleTest;
import org.junit.experimental.categories.Category;
#Category(SampleTest.class)
extends GenericTest
Now you can run the example as a standalone example, without the need for the testing infrastructure.
IMPORTANT: You jumped straight to the examples. Please also take a look at the pdfCalligraph web page. It contains a link to a white paper with plenty of interesting information: pdfCalligraph white paper
You might also want to read chapter 2 of the building blocks tutorial, because I see that you are missing a dependency:
<dependency>
<groupId>com.itextpdf</groupId>
<artifactId>typography</artifactId>
<version>1.0.0</version>
<scope>compile</scope>
</dependency>
Without this dependency (that includes the pdfCalligraph) add-on, your code won't work.
