Why is SQL converting Varchar value to Integer in a varchar column? - sql

I am receiving an error
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value to data type int
while trying to insert data from one table into another. Both have the same table structure (table being inserted is an exact copy of the one used in the Select) and data types on the columns are the same.
INSERT INTO PS_PSOPRDEFN_BA
SELECT *
FROM PSOPRDEFN
Error:
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '11000_600' to data type int.
The column this is inserting with this value is a varchar(30) in both tables, so I don't know why SQL is trying to convert it to int. Any ideas are appreciated.

When doing inserts, always include the columns:
INSERT INTO PS_PSOPRDEFN_BA ( . . . ) -- column list here
SELECT . . . -- column list here
FROM PSOPRDEFN;
You have a value which is a string which is being assigned to an integer column, and the value cannot be converted.
When doing an insert, the columns are aligned by order in the column list, not by name. So, merely having the same name doesn't mean that the code will work. The tables have to have exactly the same columns defined in the same order with compatible types for your code to work.

How to do explicit conversion of FLOAT to a VARCHAR field in SQL

I'm getting a query from a column float (with no precision) and inserting it in another table and comumn float (with no precision as well) but I'm getting this error:
Error (265) Insufficient result space for explicit conversion of FLOAT value '3.8833137793643' to a VARCHAR field.
The query:
INSERT INTO TableA
SELECT DISTINCT max(price_1) AS PriceValue
FROM TableB
This does may or may not answer your question. But the query should be written as:
INSERT INTO TableA (<column name>)
SELECT MAX(price_1) AS PriceValue
FROM TableB;
Notes:
An aggregation query with no GROUP BY returns exactly one row. SELECT DISTINCT is not necessary.
You should include the columns being inserted.
Your problem is clearly that the column is not wide enough. If you have defined the table as:
create table tableA (
col varchar
);
Then you have not specified a length and are depending on the default in the database. Do you even know what the default is? In this case, it is 1. And that is not long enough for your value. You just need to provide a long-enough length:
create table tableA (
col varchar(255)
);
All that said. I strongly discourage you from storing number values as strings. That is likely to create problems now and in the future. Use the appropriate types for your data.

How to select record of different data type from sql column

I have two a table and a view . The table if of two rows of datatypes nvarchar and money. I have being updating the table by selecting from the view like below.
Insert into MyTable
Select * from MyView
Recently, this update fails due to an error "String or binary data would be truncated." However, when i modified by select statement to something like.
Select * from Myview WHERE Column is not null
OR
Select * from Myview WHERE Column > 0
The above work with a warning saying Warning: Null value is eliminated by an aggregate or other SET operation. . It occurred to me that may may be one of the null value records contain something that's not null. My table column is of money type and accept null. I presumed the error may be due to something that's not of money data type. The record is huge. Is there any way i can filter and return those aliens records?
I also i learnt that i can eliminate the error by turning ANSI WARNING SETTION ON & OFF Here . My concern is wouldn't that result in loss of data. Please any help would be appreciated.
String or binary data would be truncated happened because the data coming from the MyView is larger than the column size in MyTable
Use
Select Max(Len(FieldName)) From MyTable
to check the maximum length of the nvarchar field in the MyTable
Or you can use Left when inserting data something Llike this
Insert into MyTable
Select Left(FieldName,50), Column1 from MyView
Note the 50 should be the size of the nvarchar field in MyTable
String or binary data would be truncated is a very common error. It usually happens when we try to insert any data in string (varchar, nvarchar, char, nchar) data type column which is more than size of the column. So you need to check the data size with respect to the column width and identify which column is creating problem and fix it.
Here is another thread of the same problem as yours in stackoverflow.
string or binary data would be truncated
Hope this will help.
Regards
looks like the data in some column in table MyView exceeds the limit of the corresponding one in table MyTable

Converting varchar to numeric type in SQL Server

I have a column in a table with a varchar datatype. It has 15 digits after the decimal point. Now I am having a hard time converting it to a numeric format.. float, double etc.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Example :
Table1
Column1
-------------------
-28.851540616246499
-22.857142857142858
-26.923076923076923
76.19047619047619
I tried using the following statements and it doesn't seem to work :
update table1
set Column1 = Convert(float,column1)..
Any suggestions ?
You can use the decimal data type and specify the precision to state how many digits are after the decimal point. So you could use decimal(28,20) for example, which would hold 28 digits with 20 of them after the decimal point.
Here's a SQL Fiddle, showing your data in decimal format.
Fiddle sample:
create table Table1(MyValues varchar(100))
insert into Table1(MyValues)
values
('-28.851540616246499'),
('-22.857142857142858'),
('-26.923076923076923'),
('76.19047619047619')
So the values are held as varchar in this table, but you can cast it to decimal as long as they are all valid values, like so:
select cast(MyValues as decimal(28,20)) as DecimalValues
from table1
Your Sample
Looking at your sample update statement, you wouldn't be able to convert the values from varchar to a numeric type and insert them back in to the same column, as the column is of type varchar. You would be better off adding a new column with a numeric data type and updating that.
So if you had 2 columns:
create table Table1(MyValues varchar(100), DecimalValues decimal(28,20))
You could do the below to update the numeric column with the nvarchar values that have been cast to decimal:
update Table1
set DecimalValues = cast(MyValues as decimal(28,20))
I think you're trying to actually change the data type of that column?
If that is the case you want to ALTER the table and change the column type over to float, like so:
alter table table1
alter column column1 float
See fiddle: http://sqlfiddle.com/#!6/637e6/1/0
You would use CONVERT if you're changing the text values to numbers for temporary use within a query (not to actually permanently change the data).

Change SQL Field Data Type varchar to float with data already stored

I have an imported database which contain lots of float field.
When I imported it, all the float field converted to string and I need to convert it back.
I try alter table to change the data type but I keep getting error (even if the row is empty or null).
EDIT : The server is curently down so I can't get the error message at the moment. My DBMS is SQL Server.
you can do so if all data are really numeric type.
There may be some data which hv null --no problem here.
There may be some data which are blank(('') but not null--problem is because of this.
First you make a select query to retrieve all data which are blank
say,
Select * from table1 where col=''
now update these rows with null
update table1 set col=null where col=''
After this,I think you can easily convert it to float
References: error converting data type varchar column to float.
You can first add a new field in your table with datatype float and then update it using convert function:
UPDATE #tbl
SET
num = convert(FLOAT, text)
SELECT *
FROM
#tbl

Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '1,' to data type int

I have table categories (c) and an another table (x) with a column which can contain cat IDs separated with comma as varchar data type. I want to Select related categories but I'm having error "Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '5,' to data type int." when trying to select:
SELECT ID, Title FROM c WHERE ID IN (SELECT catIDs FROM x WHERE ID=any);
The subquery returns data like "1,3,4"
You need to split the 1,3,4 string returned by the subquery into separate int values. SQL Server does not have a built-in function to do it, but you can use this user-defined function.
Create the function dbo.Split in your database and then re-write your query as follows:
SELECT ID, Title
FROM c
WHERE ID IN
(
SELECT s
FROM dbo.Split(',', '1,3,4')
)
I replaced the subquery with example results 1,3,4 to shorten the query and make it easier to understand.
If I get it right, you actually have values like "1,3,4" in your column catIDs. So you should extract a substring in the select of your subquery.
By the way, I'm not an MS SQL Server expert, but it's probably a bad database design to do so. I'm not sure the RDBMS engine will use indexes in such a case...
