We are supposed to make a web-based project using postgres. The topic is library management system, where on a website a user can search whether a book is available in the library, if it is present then where, and so on.
The problem is just that I don't know anything about web development. I do have a pretty good knowledge of sql, but I'm confused a bit in that too, because I don't know if I'll just have to run the queries in my laptop in postgres and link if it "somehow" to the website, or will I have to upload my data on some server (for eg., firebase in case Android development) to be used in my website.
So briefly, I've just two questions:-
How should I start, because I have no idea where to begin with(I do have all the data needed btw)?
About postgres, will the queries run on my laptop or some server?
Please help me with this. Some online resources for the same are way more than just welcome, because I was unable to find any. Thank you!
First of all, you'd take a look at some design pattern in order to learn some theory on how to make (web) apps in the right way. You can visit Martin Fowler's web site and read them.
Once studied, you'd follow my advice. If you've got Java expetise, I'd start by learning Spring Boot, which has every piece you need to achieve your goal. This project follows lot's of design patterns (MVC, Repository, DAO, AOP, IoC/DI...) and lets you follow others (DTO). Anyway, choose the right template engine (I like Thymeleaf) or any other framework (Angular 2...).

-- Google simple website with postgres db. For that you will require the database to be installed and a webserver on your machine. All of which will be used when you host the website

Looking for advice on web development languages/tools for a simple project. I have used HTML to create simple sites before but they were primarily just static information. I have no experience with web scripting, etc. at this point.
Our company has a half dozen or so Transact SQL queries that produce simple text reports from our SQL Server database. I would like to create a simple web type application so that users on our intranet can run these queries themselves vs. asking for what they need.
The queries require minimal input from the user. Typically they would only need to enter a start and stop date or a customer number, or an invoice number.
The application needs to be functional, not especially pretty. I want the user to be asked for the above type input as appropriate and then specify where a file with the reults should be written on their computer.
On other projects I have done some Python programming in conjunction with the SQL Server database, just nothing that interacts with a web site or that has a GUI.

You'll very least need to know a server side language such as PHP or Python to make the queries. Maybe a CGI script?
Most commonly used, I believe, is PHP. It is well-documented and meant for the what you want to do, contrary to Python, which doesn't play as nice with HTML as PHP. As stated on the PHP website, it is quite popular and as such has quite a few tutorials online. After you understand the syntax - you said you have programmed in Python, so only the syntax would be new to you - you should look into how to connect with your SQL Server. Microsoft owns that, so I hope (for them) they explain it well enough: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc793139(v=sql.90).aspx. That should equip you with what is needed for what you describe in the question.
I found this question as well: Can PHP work with a MS SQL database. The accepted answer suggests you can use PDO as well to connect to SQL Server. I recommend PDO over the mssql_ functions, because it offers an object oriented API and and an API that makes prepared statements real easy, among others.
I have hadoop 1.0.4 running on my ubuntu 11.04,configured with eclipse I want to make a web application to run hadoop jobs, or may be Cassandra,Hbase and Hive might be a way but I don't have much time to learn thoroughly all these and I want to do it as quickly as possible.Any advice which one might prove the easiest to get started with ?
I don't know if this question really qualifies to be here on SO in its current form. This is the reason I did not write this initially. But, a lot of SO experts are out there to decide this(they can do it much better than me) :)
Having said that, I would like to share a few things with you based on my personal experience, so that you proceed towards the correct path. First of all, Hadoop jobs(MapReduce) and Hive are actually not a good fit for web services kinda use cases. They are most suitable for offline, batch processing kinda stuff. HBase/Cassandra can be used though, if you have real time needs(like web services).
Coming back to your actual question. Before diving into Hadoop, Hive, HBase etc, I would suggest you to get some hold on web services first(if you are new to web services as well). Reason being, a web service is something which has much wider scope of applicability as compared to tools like Hadoop, Hive, HBase etc. These tools are specific to some particular use cases and cannot be used everywhere. But, web services are used almost everywhere and with n number of different things, like RDBMSs, NoSQL datastores etc etc. So if you know web service concepts you definitely have that extra edge. One last thing. Although it's not mandatory to be a pro in things like Hadoop, Hive, HBase etc, but having some decent amount of understanding of the concepts would be really helpful in developing your solution in a much better manner. It'll allow you to think accurately in the correct direction.

I am making an iPhone application and Website simultaneously and I want a shared database between the two. I know about some of the options although none of them seem to work perfectly. Like Core Data which will be very nice on the iPhone side, although I havent found a way to access the same information in something other than Obj-c. SQLite is another option, I might not be right, but it supposedly does not work well for servers and being accessed simultaneously from different places. Or I could do XML which seems easy on both sides but it seems like thats the slowest option and will have a huge drag on performance if im going to be reading it from a server all the time.
Any help would be appreciated, and if you know of any other solutions I will be glad to give them a try.

Have you thought of using a MySQL backend on your server, and then providing your mobile application with an API?
This takes the hassle out of data synchronisation and also provides you with a good level of sustainability and scalability.

I am relatively new to using SQL Server (we're on 2005) but not to database design, creation, and programming. I have decided to use TSQLUnit for the testing we want to do, and have been learning it as I go. But, there are some things that have not become clear over time, and it gets pretty frustrating to want to do a particular type of test and not be able to do it. I'm not sure if the problem is with SQL Server (very unlikely), TSQLUnit (unlikely) or me (very likely).
Does anyone know of an online resource or community of TSQLUnit users that I could consult? I would like to both contribute when I can and gain benefit when needed.
Any suggestions or links will be appreciated.

I'm very impressed with my initial tests with db4o. However, i'm wondering just how many enterprise class websites are out there powered by db4o, i couldn't see any on the main website?
I can't see any reason why db4o should not be used. There appears to be decent enough support for transactions and ways to handle concurrency for example.
Anyone got a list of websites i could look at?
