I just installed Microsoft SQL Server Express and Management Studio, the Management Studio opens but will not open files. I am getting the following message when I try to open a SQL file:
error message
Any help would be so much appreciated. Thank you
This is the known issue in SSMS 18.0 preview 6 and before.
Double-clicking on a .sql file launches SSMS, but does not open the actual script.
As workarounds, please drag and drop the .sql file onto the SSMS editor.
If it is possible, you can use the SSMS 17.9.1 instead. Here is the download link.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssms/download-sql-server-management-studio-ssms?view=sql-server-2017
This may be due to the fact that you're asking to grab something from an unaccessable directory. I'm not too sure, try reinstalling ssms if possible and reinstall sql express and see what it does

I'm working on Visual Studio 2015 and whenever I try to add a table from the server explorer menu, it only shows two options Properties and Refresh.
There have been answers for this problem, but I have already tried them, like, adding SQL data tools and repairing visual studio.
SQL data tools were already installed and even after repairing the problem persists.
So please suggest me how can I add tables to the database.
Thanks for the comments, but i solved the problem.
Open the command prompt and type the command:
C:\sqllocaldb create "MyInstance"
MyInstance refers to your sql server instance, it can be v11.0 but for me it was mssqllocaldb .
If it runs successfully, it will show you result stating 'Instance created' and you will be able to add the tables.
But if you get error regarding creation of instance then delete the instance by typing the command in command prompt:
C:\sqllocaldb delete "MyInstance"
and then create the instance.
I hope this helps.
Close your visual studio.
Download SQL Server Data Tools
Install it in your pc
Then Close if successfully installation.
Now Open your visual studio.
Hope this will help.
Enjoy :)
Another reason "Add New table" Not showing is you don't have installed SQL server Data Tools. So just go ahed and downlaods SQL server data tool ISO from official Website
https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=863443&clcid=0x409
Install the SQL Server Data Tool And Restart Visual Studio
Download and Install SQL server data from the link given below,
https://download.microsoft.com/download/3/4/6/346DB3B9-B7BB-4997-A582-6D6008796846/Dev12/EN/SSDTSetup.exe
After installing the SQL server you will be able to add a new table.
Table > right click> Add new Table.
Everything about my VS 2013 install appears to be working correctly except when I right click on a table in Server Explorer. I am trying to use the data tools to view the table, which is in a MS SQL database. Here is the message VS 2013 pops when I right click:
The 'Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools' package did not load correctly.
The problem may have been caused by a configuration change or by the installation of another extension. You can get more information by examining the file 'C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0\ActivityLog.xml'.
Here are the last few lines of the ActivityLog.xml, btw one of the most cryptic log files I have ever read:

Here is what I have done to try to solve this problem:
Disabled all plugins/extensions
Checked for and applied all updates for all extensions and VS 2013 including Update 1
Did a full VS 2013 install repair operation
VS 2013 now includes the SSDT tools in VS 2013, so I cannot download and install anything, it is suppose to already be working. Not unless someone knows of a different trick.
I am out of ideas and I have searched quite extensively about this, most of it applied to VS 2012. If anyone has any good suggestions, that would be awesome.
Go to 'Add/Remove Programs' in Control Panel, search for "Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools" and repair.
Worked for me.
And just in case none of those work, you can go to the Download Latest SQL Server Data Tools Microsoft page itself. It lists out the versions of the tool set for each version of Visual Studio
I had the same issue. After trying the other answers and not resolving the issue, I was able to resolve it by
Uninstalling Sql Server Data Tools from the control panel
Navigating to Extensions and Updates
Go to Updates tab -> Update Visual Studio
You should get a prompt to enable optional features, choose SSDT
Wait for the long installation process, restart if necassary.
Fixed it for me
It is not in VS after 2012. Try this link, install separately

There is no stand-alone install for VS 2022 :(
I have visual web developer 2010 express and mysql/connector 6.4.3
When I press on the database explorer tab -> connect to database, I need to choose data source but I dont see mysql data source as I shold.
I've tried to reinstall it..
I have both visual studio 2008 and visual web developer 2010 express.
Btw, during the mysql/connector I only saw that he configured vs2008..
How can I fix that?
p.s.
I saw here that its not supported, is it true??
Thanks.
This is an old, but to answer your question I was having the same issue until I tried it on the ultimate version. It picks it right up. You just need to re-install the connector.
So short answer, yes. :(
I have Visual Studio 2008 Database Edition, and everything worked great until the first time I tried to load a .dbproj file. These database project files work for the other developers I work with, but when I try to open it, I just get an error message "Object reference ot set to an instance of an object."
It's probably the same problem this guy is having, although he didn't do a good job of describing it and has no solution.
Every other kind of project file loads and builds and runs normally. dbproj files all generate this cryptic error. I just tried a fresh removal and reinstall of Visual Studio 2008 DE to no avail. Could this have something to do with my SQL 2005 installation? (This also works normally through SQL Server Management Studio.)

UPDATE
**
Probably even more importantly, this same error occurs when I try to make a new dbproj file. Every other type of project can be created no problem.
You need to tell Visual Studio the correct instance of SQL Server to use for validation.
Tools>Options>DatabaseTools
Change the settings in "Data Connections" and "Design-time Validation Database" to reflect the correct instance.
After many failed re-configurations and re-installations, a member of my team discovered the problem!
Under Tools > Options > Database Tools > Design-time Validation Database, there is an option to set your SQL Server Instance Name. Visual Studio automatically picks this when it's installed.
The key is that Visual Studio doesn't necessarily pick the right one. I happen to have 3 SQL server instances on my machine. SQLEXPRESS (a 2005 instance that Visual Studio installed alongside itself), SQLEXPRESS2005, a 2005 instance I installed, and SQLEXPRESS2008, which I also installed.
Visual Studio had configured itself to connect to the SQLEXPRESS2008 instance, even though it only supports SQL2005 dbproj files by default. By opening this dialogue, and updating the server instance name, the error no longer appeared and I was able to open dbproj files:
I installed SQL 2008 Enterprise edition all work properly during the installation all requirement are passed then after click finish go to :
start --> All Programs --> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 --> only found the Configuration Tools and import export data
any help plz
During installation you need to make sure to install management tools.
I get that occasionally when istalling on a rebuilt machine or server. I have no idea why it happens, but to make sure it doesnt happen, I normally choose the path where I choose the features during install and make sure you have the i think its called client tools or something checked for install. I used to get it all the time until I changed.
If you have different versions installed, it will show only one of them in the Start/Program Files Menu. However you might be able to find the exe file down the road at somewhere like:
"$\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\Ssms.exe"
for the 2008 version and
"$\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\SqlWb.exe"
for the 2005 version.
