IntelliJ CE does not recognise Play framework - intellij-idea

I have an play application, IntelliJ CE does not recognise anything play.*
such as:
Error:not found: object play
import play.api.GlobalSettings
How can I fix this?
It is a gradle project and building fine from command-line but intelliJ CE has some problem with the code.

Play framework is supported only in IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate.

Three ways you can deal with this (assuming your IntellJ is up to date):
Close the IntellJ and import the project again as a Gradle project.
Remove the .idea folder within the project's folder; and try to import it again.
Click to Invalid Caches / Restart from the file menu.

I ran into the same issue and found this: Building a Play 2.6 project from IntelliJ builds nothing
So now we're 3 people with the same problem. I haven't found any open bug report or issue anywhere.
I got it working using the workaround that OP from the other question suggested: "Build the project from SBT in your desired location first, and then import the project from IntelliJ as an SBT project and you should be good to go."
To do that just run sbt new playframework/play-scala-seed.g8 (assuming you have SBT installed and PATH configured), and import that.
I raised the issue with IntelliJ support. It seems to be fixed in the latest release of IntelliJ ultimate edition. If you run the default application and see 'no jdk error', go to edit configurations and select the top level project in play module (see pic)

IntelliJ clean import Hybris project

I'm trying to (re)import a hybris project in IntelliJ with the hybris integration plugin. But every time when I get to the point to select the modules there are none except the project name itself. If I try to ignore that and just press next than I end up with a project without folder / modules.
That problem came after I imported that project ones and then deleted all files that are pointed to IntelliJ.
Is it possible to clean IntelliJ from a whole project with all dependencies etc. so I can import the project like nothing happend before?
v5.4.2 required other plugins which you probably had disabled. such as spring, ant or git.
The best way to get speedy resolution on the intellij hybris plugin is from their jira support portal. Dont forget to register/login first so that you can get an answer.

Version 5.4.2 is broken. Downgrading to the older one (5.3.1) worked for me and fixed that "no modules when importing"-problem

IntelliJ Ultimate ignores spring boot application.properties

Today I've install IntelliJ Ultimate version 2016.1.1 build 145.597. What I did later, was import of may project from IntelliJ Community Edition. This project is based on spring-boot 1.3.3. The problem is that when I want to run my application in IntelliJ Ultimate somehow application.properties file is ignored and it starts with default spring settings. When I'm running the same project in IntelliJ Community Edition or from command line everything works fine. Problem exists only in Ultimate edition when I'm adding and running spring boot run configuration, if I use gradle configuration and bootRun task it works.
I didn't use before IntelliJ Ultimate.
Does anyone know what could be wrong? I wasted 2 hours googling for solution of my problem but I didn't find anything.

I had same issue for IntelliJ Ultimate 2016.1.1
Reimporting the project and deleting existing project worked for me.
I believe the issue is pertinent with 1.1 version. Didn't had issue with IntelliJ IDEA 2016.1.4
check if file application.properties is directly under target/classess after compiled, maybe the wrong settings copy it to other directory that spring boot cannot know
one simple thing to fix the problem.
If you already open the IntelliJ idea, close the project and remove it from IntelliJ
idea.
navigate to your project directory (ex: F:\dev\my-project) and remove the .idea
folder from it.
then open the IntelliJ idea again. open your project from File -> Open.
then run the project.
this is the simplest solution.

I had a similar problem with my spring boot application running from IntelliJ Ultimate Version 2020.3 . I had a Connection.properties configured in spring-config.xml file as below and got the FileNotFoundException for my Connection.properties file even after placing the file under src/main/resources folder in my gradle project
<context:property-placeholder location="file:Connection.properties" />
It worked after changing it to
<context:property-placeholder location="classpath:Connection.properties" />
Note the "file:" to "classpath:" in "location" attribute

How to use an existing Gradle project in IntelliJ IDEA 13/14

I am using Gradle and IntelliJ IDEA. Normally I use apply plugin: 'idea' to generate the IDEA project files. With IDEA 12 I was used to work with the JetGradle tool view.
Now I updated to IDEA 13 and the JetGradle tool view is gone. When I use the old run configuration gradle:run, IDEA tells me:
Error running gradle:run:
Module 'X' is not backed by gradle.
How can I activate the gradle build in IDEA 13 without the tool view? I found this tweet from Cédric Champeau, but was still not able to solve it. Do I have to turn my simple gradle project into a multi module project or what?

With File - Import Project ... I can import the build.gradle file and than I can choose View - Tool Windows - Gradle, which was hidden before. Is this the way to go?
What you state in your update is the correct way to go. The Gradle Plug-in received a lot of love in the IDEA 13 update and has changed a bit. An import of the Gradle build file is necessary. And as you have noted, the JetGradle tool window is now named simple Gradle
Tested with Gradle 1.9. In my opinion there are 2 issues:
Issue 1: when using gradlew idea I expect to receive a valid IDEA project without the need to import it. There are discussions on the gradle forum, see this Gradle forum post. In this Jetbrains forum post it is told that there is no backward compatibility with IntelliJ 12 gradle projects at the moment.
Issue 2: With IDEA 12 it was possible to open the JetGradle View even if the current project was not a gradle projcet. But the view displayed the message "There is no linked Gradle project. You can Add one" and offered you the possibility to convert the project to an gradle project with a simple click. In IDEA 13 it is not possible to open the Gradle View when the current project is not a gradle project. I asked a question here.
In the Gradle forum post mentioned above Peter Niederweiser stated:
The preferred way of integrating with IDEA 13 is to use IDEA's Gradle import, without running gradle idea. (You should still apply the idea plugin though, and it's still important to apply it to allprojects {} rather than subprojects {} when dealing with multi-project builds.)
So the answer from Mark Vedder is correct, altough I would have liked to have more information.
I have found that when you initially import a gradle project into Idea, if you don't have all of your directories created yet, the gradle tool window vanishes while you are importing into Idea. (It is there when the import starts, but at the end it disappears.) However, if I manually build the project first (on a mac, >gradle clean build), and then go back to IDEA and import the project, the gradle tool window stays active. Hopefully this will help someone else.
you can go to Project Structure (Ctrl + Alt + Shift +S) and then under the Modules, click "Import Module" and choose your build.gradle from the project file repo. It will make the module gradle aware and then you will also see the Gradle window
The simplest way to do this is to use the Import Project option if you cannot use the gradlew idea to produce the idea project

How to import and run existing plugins from intellij community edition repo

I'm trying to import and run the IntelliJ git4idea (Git Integration) plugin in order to play around and contribute some of my own code.
I've pulled the Intellij community edition from the github repo, and imported the git4idea plugin as a project. I'm running the Intellij community edition
My main issue is this:
After importing all the modules, the git4idea module comes up as a general module type, and not a plugin module type.
This means that when trying to create a new run\debug configuration, I get [none] under "Use classpath of module", instead of of the ability to select the git4idea plugin. This obviously results in a "Run configuration error: no plugin module specified for configuration".
So the question is -
How can I change the general type of imported "git4idea" to plugin type?
Or better yet, what are the steps required in order to import and build/debug/run a plugin from the Intellij community edition repo?
I was able to solve this by manually reordering file directories, sorting out dependencies and editing the .iml file. The type of plugin is defined by changing type="JAVA_MODULE" to type="PLUGIN_MODULE".

This is the answer given by Dmitry Jemerov on the official Jetbrains plugin development forum:
The easiest answer to this is "don't". The IntelliJ IDEA Community
Edition project is set up to be developed as a whole, and the
dependencies are set up accordingly. If you want to hack on the Git
plugin, you simply run IDEA using the provided run configuration, it
runs with all plugins enabled, and you simply make whatever changes
you need and test them using the main run configuration.
If you really want, you can set up a new plugin module and point it to
the source code of the git4idea plugin inside the IntelliJ IDEA
Community Edition Git checkout. This is not too hard, but it's
something you'll need to do from scratch, and you can't use the
existing .iml file.
I had the same no plugin module specified for configuration issue. To work around it, instead of importing, I created a new plugin project and used the existing code directory.

You should run the 'runIde' task in gradle.
Step-by-step instruction
Build your IDEA plugin (usually done with gradle build).
Start Intellij IDEA.
If you have any project opened, go to menu "File->Close all projects" to return to Intellij IDEA startup screen.
Install the plugin you've just built: on the left side of the "Welcome to Intellij IDEA" startup screen go to "Plugins", then click "gear" icon on the right side, it's located to the right of "Marketplace" and "Installed". From the pop-up menu select "Install Plugin from Disk...", navigate to plugin file (usually in build folder) and click "Ignore and continue" when you see the warning message saying something about signature.
Restart Intellij IDEA.
Open the folder with your IDEA plugin.
Wait until IDEA imported your Gradle project.
Put breakpoints inside your plugin code so you can debug it.
Go to menu "Run->Edit configurations".
In the "Run/Debug Configurations" window on the left side click "+".
Select "Gradle" from the pop-up menu.
On the right side change "Name" to "gradle-run-ide" (without quotes).
On the right side under "Run", inside "Tasks and arguments" field enter runIde ("i" must be capital, other letters small).
Click "OK" to save changes.
Go to menu "Run->Debug 'gradle-run-ide'".
A new, black-colored IDEA window should appear.
In this black-colored IDEA window do whatever you need to do in order to invoke methods of your plugin. When you invoke them, the first IDEA window should stop you on breakpoints you set previously.

After changing type="JAVA_MODULE" to type="PLUGIN_MODULE" in *.iml file I was getting following error -
Error running 'IdeaPlugin': Wrong SDK type for plugin module
To fix this go to -
Module Settings -> Platform settings -> SDKs.
Click on Add new SDK
Select Intellij Platform plugin SDK
For home directory select your Inetllij installation dir
Select JAVA SDK you want to use with it.
Once this is added got to Module Settings again
Module Settings -> Project settings -> project.
In Project SDK change the JAVA sdk to the SDK we just added in the above steps.
Run/Debug you plugin now.
