VBA instr Function used in Left function? - vba

What I Have:
A column I have this data 24/25,25/26, up to 100/101 and in B column I have this data 24,25,26, up to 101. Using Left function I'm checking Left(24/25,2) with column B.... when coming to 100/101 it's giving me return as 10.
What I want:
Left(100/101,2) Then its have return 100 how do I do that I know if we give 3 then it will return but when we give three then 24/ also come. Give me any Suggestion.

You can use the Split Function:

Sheet formula version:
You want to Find the position of "/" in the cell, then remove 1. That will give the number of characters before the "/" that you are after for Left. So, if data was in A2, you would put the following in B2:
=IFERROR(LEFT(A2,FIND("/",A2)-1),"")

Excel conversion of text containing ranges--numeric to alpha-numeric

I would like to convert a range of numbers (and single digits) from a number-only format to alpha-numeric format. Entire statement is in a single, excel cell and would like the converted version to be in a neighboring cell.
As an example:
Assuming 1-24=B1-B24
Assuming 25-48=C1-C24
INPUT—
screen 1-3,5,7-9,11-30,32-37,39-40,41,44-46
DESIRED OUTPUT (all acceptable)
screen B1-B3,B5,B7-B9,B11-C6,C8-C13,C15-C16,C17,C20-C22
OR
screen B1-B3,B5,B7-B9,B11-B24,C1-C6,C8-C13,C15-C16,C17,C20-C22

Using excel functions is proving quite cumbersome so excel macro would be better. I've looked for examples of requested conversion but haven't found anything.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey here is a solution that i tested out. Not sure if "screen" needs to be in the string or not. Let me know and I will tweak it if that's the case.
Its a user defined function. So drop this vba in a module and then go to a worksheet and type in "=AlphaConvert(" + the cell reference.
Assumption here is that only one cell will be referenced at a time.
Last this could easily be converted to a sub routine and probably run a bit faster than the function.

Extracting Date/Time from comment cell

I have a comment field with cells containing text like this:
Cancelled by user at 2018-01-03 03:11:57 without charge
I want to get the date and time information, but it may not always be in the 3rd/4th from last spaces, otherwise I might try to do some sort of complicated split of the cell. Is there an "in cell" way extract the date time information? Or will this need a VBA script? I prefer the former, but I'm trying to make a macro to simplify my life anyway, so VBA would work too.
I'd propose the following formula:
=MID(A1,FIND("at 20",A1)+3,19)
This would require that the date is always preceded by the word 'at' and the date string starts with 20.
You can try this function. It splits the string checking for items that have the first letter numeric, and builds a result string of just the date information.

Note this is an array formula, so you must press Ctrl+Shift+Enter instead of just Enter when typing this formula.
You will obviously then need to format the cell as a date and time, but this formula gets the numerical value that Excel uses for its internal date and time system.
Using a regex will enable you to fetch the date and time, irrespective of its placement in the string. The following solution will work if the date and time are of the same format as shown in the example string.

\d{4} - matches 4 digits representing the year
(?:-\d{2}){2} - matches - followed by 2 digits. {2} in the end repeats this match 2 times. Once for getting MM and the next time for DD
\s* - matches 0+ whitespaces to match the space between the Date and Time
\d{2} - matches 2 digits representing the HH
(?::\d{2}){2} - matches : followed by 2 digits. The {2} in the end repeats this match 2 times. First time for matching the :MM and the next time for matching the :SS

Search cell for text and copy text to another cell in VBA?

I've got a column which contains rows that have parameters in them. For example
W2 = [PROD][FO][2.0][Customer]
W3 = [PROD][GD][1.0][P3]
W4 = Issues in production for customer
I have a function that is copying other columns into another sheet, however for this column, I need to do the following
Search the cell and look for [P*]
The asterisk represents a number between 1 and 5
If it finds [P*] then copy P* to the sheet "Calculations" in column 4
Basically, remove everything from the cell except where there is a square bracket, followed by P, a number and a square bracket
Does anyone know how I can do this? Alternatively, it might be easier to copy the column across and then remove everything that doesn't meet the above criteria.

My solution would be something as follows. I'd write a function that first tests if the Pattern exists in the string, then if it does, I'd split it based on brackets, and choose the bracket that matches the pattern. Let me know if that works for you.

In VBA, you can use the Like Operator with a Pattern to represent an Open Bracket, the letter P, any number from 1-5, then a Closed Bracket using the below syntax:

If you're ok with blanks and don't care if *>5, I would do this and copy down column 4:
=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("[P?]",FirstSheet!$W2)), FirstSheet!$W2, "")
Important things to note:
? is the wildcard symbol for a single character; you can use * if you're ok with multiple characters at that location
will display cell's original value if found, leave blank otherwise
Afterwards, you can highlight the column and remove blanks if needed. Alternatively, you can replace the blank with a placeholder string.
If * must be 1-5, use two columns, E and D, respectively:
=MID(FirstSheet!$W2,SEARCH("[P",FirstSheet!$W2)+2,1)
=IF(AND(ISNUMBER($E2),$E2>0,$E2<=5,MID($W2,SEARCH("[P",FirstSheet!$W2)+3,1))), FirstSheet!$W2, "")

How can I check if a cell in Excel spreadsheet contains number

I have a column of addresses and I have to find those which don't contain street numbers. Unfortunately, addresses have been input by various users and they do not follow the same pattern so the street type, street name, suburb are in different order and I can't use functions like LEFT, RIGHT or MID to check if particular character is a number. The column looks like this:
10 Willsons Drive, Manhattan
Epping, 23 Wet Rd
Longsdale St, Kingsbury
11 Link Crt, Pakenham
Is there an Excel or VBA function that can tell me if cell / string contains numbers?
Put this into a Module, then in your worksheet, may be a column next to it, put formula =HaveNumbers(A2) and check if you want it like that (True/False). You can change it to Return a String instead. This Returns TRUE / FALSE.

How to normalize filenames listed in a range

I have a list of filenames in a spreadsheet in the form of "Smith, J. 010112.pdf". However, they're in the varying formats of "010112.pdf", "01.01.12.pdf", and "1.01.2012.pdf". How could I change these to one format of "010112.pdf"?
Personally I hate using VBA where worksheet functions will work, so I've worked out a way to do this with worksheet functions. Although you could cram this all into one cell, I've broken it out into a lot of independent steps in separate columns so you can see how it's working, step by step.
For simplicity I'm assuming your file name is in A1
B1 =LEN(A1)
determine the length of the filename
C1 =SUBSTITUTE(A1," ","")
replace spaces with nothing
D1 =LEN(C1)
see how long the string is if you replace spaces with nothing
E1 =B1-D1
determine how many spaces there are
F1 =SUBSTITUTE(A1," ",CHAR(8),E1)
replace the last space with a special character that can't occur in a file name
G1 =SEARCH(CHAR(8), F1)
find the special character. Now we know where the last space is
H1 =LEFT(A1,G1-1)
peel off everything before the last space
I1 =MID(A1,G1+1,255)
peel off everything after the last space
J1 =FIND(".",I1)
find the first dot

It's kind of a mess because Excel hasn't added a single new string manipulation function in over 20 years, so things that should be easy (like "find last space") require severe trickery.

This function below works. I've assumed that the date is in ddmmyy format, but adjust as appropriate if it's mmddyy -- I can't tell from your example.
