I would like to update rows with values chosen randomly from a set of possible values.
Ideally I would be able to provide this values at runtime, using JdbcTemplate from Java application.
Example:
In a table, column "name" can contain any name. The goal is to run through the table and change all names to equal to either "Bob" or "Alice".
I know that this can be done by creating a sql function. I tested it and it was fine but I wonder if it is possible to just use simple query?
This will not work, seems that the value is computed once, and applied to all rows:

I tried using MERGE INTO, but it won't even run (possible_names is not found in SET query). I am yet to figure out why:

EDIT: If possible, I would like to only focus on fields being updated and not depend on knowing primary keys and such.
Db2 seems to be optimizing away the subselect that returns your supposedly random name, materializing it only once, hence all rows in the target table receive the same value.
To force subselect execution for each row you need to somehow correlate it to the table being updated, for example:
UPDATE test.table
SET first_name =

FETCH FIRST 1 ROW ONLY)
or may be even

FETCH FIRST 1 ROW ONLY)
Now that the result of subselect seems to depend on the value of the corresponding row in the target table, there's no choice but to execute it for each row.
If your table has a primary key, this would work. I've assumed the PK is column id.

This can efficiently be done using the merge statement and a window function:

In SQL rows in a table (or a result) or not ordered, so the concept of a "previous" row only makes sense if you define a sort order. That's what the over (order by grade) does in the window function. From the screen shot I can not tell by which column this should be sorted.
The screen shot also doesn't reveal the primary key column of your table. I assumed it's named ID. You have to change that to reflect your real PK column name.
I also didn't include a partition by clause in the window function assuming that the formula should be applied for all rows in the same way. If this is not the case you need to be more specific with your sample data.
I have a table, and I want to select only the single column of row IDs from it, but in a specific order. Then, I want to loop through that column like below:

Since you didn't provide many details, let's pretend your table looks something like this:
create table MyTable (
Id int not null primary key,
Name varchar(50) not null,
NextId int
)
I want to select only the single column of row IDs from it, but in a specific order
Let's just say that in this case, you decide to order the rows alphabetically by Name. So let's pretend that the select statement that you want to loop through looks like this:
select Id
from MyTable
order by Name
That being the case, instead of looping through the rows and attempting to update each row using the pseudo-code you provided, you can replace the whole thing with a single update statement that will perform the exact same work:
with cte as (
select *,
NewNextId = lead(Id) over (order by Name)
from MyTable
)
update cte
set NextId = NewNextId
Just make sure to adjust the order by clause to whatever your specific order really is. I just used Name in my example, but it might be something else in your case.
You could use a cursor, or you could use something a bit smarter.
Your example should be able to be written fairly easily along the lines of:
update mytable set nextID = LEAD(id,1) over (order by id)
Lead(id,1) will grab the next id, 1 row ahead in the record set and update the nextID field with it. If it can't find one it will return null. No looping or conditional logic needed!
edit: I forgot the over clause. This is the part that tells it how you would like it ordered for the lead
I am facing a problem and cant find any solution to this. I have a source table (T) where I get data from field. The data may contain duplicate records with time stamp. My objective is to take the field data and store it into a final table (F) having the same structure.
Before inserting I check whether key field exists or not in the F if yes I update the the record in F with the latest one from T. Other wise I Insert the record in F from T. This works fine as long as there is no duplicate record in T. In case T has two records of the same key with different time stamp. It always inserts both the record (In case the key is primary key the insert operation fails). I am using following code for the operation -

The problem comes when I my T table has entries like -

Remove all but the latest row as a first step (well, in a CTE) using ROW_NUMBER() before attempting to perform the insert:

(As you may have noticed, I've also switched to using MERGE since it allows us to express everything as a single declarative statement rather than writing procedural code)
Is there any way to do some kind of "WITH...UPDATE" action on SQL?
For example:

You can use merge, with the equivalent of your with clause as the using clause, but because you're updating the field you're joining on you need to do a bit more work; this:
merge into t42
using (
select 1 as base, 10 as target
from dual
) changes
on (t42.id = changes.base)
when matched then
update set t42.id = changes.target;
.. gives error:
ORA-38104: Columns referenced in the ON Clause cannot be updated: "T42"."ID"
Of course, it depends a bit what you're doing in the CTE, but as long as you can join to your table withint that to get the rowid you can use that for the on clause instead:
merge into t42

select t42.id as base, t42.id * 10 as target, t42.rowid as r_id
from t42
where id in (1, 2)

If I create my t42 table with an id column and have rows with values 1, 2 and 3, this will update the first two to 10 and 20, and leave the third one alone.

It doesn't have to be rowid, it can be a real column if it uniquely identifies the row; normally that would be an id, which would normally never change (as a primary key), you just can't use it and update it at the same time.
How to write one SQL query that selects a column from a table but returns two columns where the additional one contains an index of the row (a new one, starting with 1 to n). It must be without using functions that do that (like row_number()).
Any ideas?

I figured out a hackish way to do this that I'm a bit ashamed of. On Postgres 8.1:
SELECT generate_series, (SELECT username FROM users LIMIT 1 OFFSET generate_series) FROM generate_series(0,(SELECT count(*) - 1 FROM users));
I believe this technique will work even if your source table does not have unique ids or identifiers.
On SQL Server 2005 and higher, you can use OVER to accomplish this:
