How to access a View object in Eclipse from another class? - eclipse-plugin

I've created a new view class which extends ViewPart for my Eclipse plugin.
That class holds a Browser object.
I wish to be able to set the URL from other classes, effectively something like myViewObject.browser.setURL(...)
But how can I access the view object? I don't have its reference when it is created.

You can use the findView method of IWorkbenchPage to find the view:

Access to container of Simple Injector MVC views

In a Sitecore project I've integrated Simple Injector using this article
It uses sitecore pipelines and then uses a method in App_start

Simply I can inject container into controller constructor but can't have container in View files.
I tried to declare a static property in App-start and save container to it. but still I'm getting no registration type in Views
What is the best way to have container object in views?
As Stephen suggests in his comment, the literal answer to your question is "you shouldn't do that - because it's not really the way MVC and DI are supposed to work". The more detailed answer goes something like this:
The job of your view is to present data that it has been passed via the Model. Views should not really contain logic. Very simple stuff like "if flag is false, hide this block of mark-up" is ok, but the more complex code to work out what the value of the flag is shouldn't be in the view.
MVC tries to make our website code better by encouraging you to separate presentation (the View) from data (the Model) and logic (the Controller). This should make our code easier to work with - So if you have processing that needs doing, then it should really be happening when your controller method runs.
If your view requires some special data, best practice suggests it should work it out in the controller method and pass it to the view in the model. The code might look more like this:

And then the View just needs to accept the MyModel class as its model, and render the SpecialData property - no logic required.
I think also it's considered a bad idea to have calls to fetch objects from your DI container spread about your codebase. For MVC apps, generally your DI container gets wired in to the process of creating a controller for a request when the app starts up. Rather than passing about a DI Container into your controllers, the DI framework extends the Controller-creation process, and the container isn't exposed outside of this. When the MVC runtime needs to create a controller, the controller-creation logic uses the DI framework to fetch objects for all the controller's dependencies.
Without more detail about what you actually want to achieve, it's difficult to say what the "right" approach to creating your object(s) here is, but the two most common patterns are probably:
1) Constructor injection: Your controller has a parameter which accepts the object required. The DI container creates this object for you at the point where it creates the controller, so your controller gets all its dependencies when it is created. Good for: scenarios where you know how to create the object at the beginning of the request.

As long as IMySpecialObject and a concrete implementation for it are registered with your DI container when your app starts up, all is well.
2) Factory classes: Sometimes, however, the object in question might be optional, or it might require data that's not available at controller-creation time to create it. In that case, your DI framework could pass in a Factory object to your controller, and this is used to do the construction of the special object later.

But a good book on using DI may suggest other approaches that fit your specific problem better.

Xamarin Prism MasterDetailPage.IsPresented from child ViewModel

Does anyone have a clue on how to control IsPresented property from a child view model?
I'm implementing a custom NavBar where I want to simulate the Hamburger icon behavior so my child page on load has
NavigationPage.SetHasNavigationBar(this, false);
which hides the navigation par.
Inside Xaml file I have a button which I want to bind to a PropertyCommand of child viewmodel and show Master page, basically somehow to call Master's IsPresented.

There are a couple of ways to go about it.
The way I would do it would be to use MVVM and use an interface to access the 'presenting the Master page' functionality where its needed.

Now extend on the MasterDetailPage and also implement the above interface

Using using an IoC container to register and resolve the interface will let you use its functionality from where ever you want.
The other solution would be to just use a static variable to store the instance of your MasterDetailPage and access that directly to change the IsPresented property

Pattern for passing common data to _layout.cshtml in MVC4.5

I am trying to come up with the best pattern for passing data to my _layout.cshtml page.
I am toying with creating a common base class from which all view specific models derive. This base class would be recognized by my _layout.cshtml and used to fill in details about the user and load proper images in the header, etc. For example, here is a snippet of it.

Each action method creates and hydrates a model derived from
ViewModelBase.
The action completes.
I create a ActionFilterAttribute and override OnActionExecuted to cast the
current Result to ViewModelBase.
If the conversion is successful, then I populate the ViewModelBase details with the relevant data.
Here are my questions...
Is the use of a ActionFilterAttribute (OnActionExecuted) a good pattern for what I am trying to do?
I am not able to see how to get the Result created in the action from the HttpActionExecutedContext. How is this done?
I follow the same approach and use a base ViewModel class which all my other viewModels inherit from.
Then, I have a base controller that all controller inherit from. In there, I have one method that takes care of initializing the view model:

In MVC, is a controller an object or a function?

I am learning Symfony2, and part of the documentation on controllers states that the methods on the controller object are actually the controllers, whereas the object is more of a controller container.
Which part specifically is referred to as the controller(s)? I'm new to MVC and OOP, so I'm just trying to make sure I have it right.
the page describes actually a convention endorsed by Symfony2 creators.
in some MVC frameworks (esp. in Java) controllers are implemented by one-class-per-controller convention, e.g.:
class ListContactsController {

public function start($name, $details) {
// insert into db...
return ...;
}
}
note that every controller-class has one method start() that defines what the controller actually does
in other MVC frameworks (like Symfony2 or cake-php) controllers are implemented by one-method-per-controller convention, grouped together for convenience, e.g.:
class ContactsController {
public function list() {
// query db...
return ...;
}
public function add($name, $details) {
// insert into db...
return ...;
}
}
here the convention assumes every controller is implemented as a method rather than a separate class with a particular method like start()
EDIT: another way of thinking about this difference is this:
one-class-per-controller assumes there is one controller instance (might hold internal state) and when user interacts with the view, view is communicating with that controller instance via callbacks i.e. methods in controller's class.
one-method-per-controller assumes any state is contained within parameters that are passed to methods, and when user interacts with the view, view is communicating with separate controllers/actions. those controllers are seen as independent concepts.
In the example page you shared, the "class HelloController" is the Controller and its' functioned are Controller "Methods".
Okay, they are referring to the default method, indexAction() as the Controller.
In this MVC architecture (and most others, if not all) the "index" method is the default method (function) called when that controller is requested.

Specify view provider type when creating new WinRT view

Trying to understand the potential use of multiple views in a WinRT app. I can create a new view, which runs on its own dispatcher thread and can be switched in/out, with CoreApplication.CreateNewView. I can't figure out how to specify how to pass a view provider in the first argument. If I have a bare app in C# (though the same holds if I use Application.Start):

If I want to create a new view with the current view provider (I suppose the one that created the currently active view), I can do

The API documentation says the 1st parameter is "The class ID of the view provider for the new view." What does that refer to? Anything I tried gave the following:

First parametr is name of your new view class.
The class ID of the view provider for the new view. If this parameter is null, use the current view provider.
If you left first parameter null then your new view will have a current view class reperesentation.
So if You want to create a new View with a cutsom class, you have to create this class and put into first parameter.
Like this:

// ...
}
And then:
CoreApplication.CreateNewView("MySecondView", "foo");
Let me know about success of this operation becouse I'm not sure about my code.
