I have a problem when casting and rounding to float in HIVE,
I have string fields that I want to cast it to float with 3 decimal digits, but it shows always the entire float without rounding it.
Example:
`select round(cast(regexp_replace( '1,1111', ',' , '.') as float),3)`
that gives as result
1.1109999418258667
while:
select round(1.1111 ,3) gives
1.111 which is the wanted result.
PS.I am using Hue editor.

you should be able to get the expected result casting to double
select round(cast(regexp_replace( '1,1111', ',' , '.') as double),3);

I have a couple of strings (nvarchar data type), one is a whole number and one has decimal points trailing. My goal is to remove decimals and have all values as a whole number.
I tried the code below but it gives me an error for the value with no decimals. Is there a way to accomplish this without a case expression. I'll be using this new column in a join.

--,LEFT([SOW], CHARINDEX('.', [SOW])-1) as 'TestColumn'
FROM [dbo].[t_Schedule_kdm]

Just append a dot character so that you'll always find an index:
LEFT(SOW, CHARINDEX('.', SOW + '.') - 1)
It's not clear whether you need to cast the result of that expression to an integer value.
Convert first to the most precision number you could ever have e.g. decimal(9,2) then convert to an int. You can't convert directly from a decimal string to an int.
SELECT [Value]
, CONVERT(int,CONVERT(decimal(9,2),[Value]))
FROM (
VALUES ('15229.11'),('11092')
) x ([Value]);
I want to display the decimal precision along with the result for decimal datatype in hive. However if there is no fraction part , in hive it will not display the decimal points.
hive> select cast(11 as decimal(14,2));
11
hive> select cast(11.22 as decimal(14,2));
11.22
In the above example instead of 11 it should display 11.00.How to achieve this?

The following format_number() function should do it.Source, return type will be string though.
select format_number(11,2)
Note: Precision and Scale were added from Hive 0.13.
Use round or float_number to set the decimal point where u like , example :
select round(SUM(150.100 + 127.0090), 2);
or
select float_number(var,2);
When I run the script:
select
cast(s as float)
from
t
where
ISNUMERIC(s) = 1
it stops with the error:
Error converting data type varchar to float.
Why does it happen? I'm trying to convert to float only numerics. How do I found out which row causes the error?
The isnumeric function thinks just about everything is a number. Use "try_convert" instead. if the value can't convert to your destination datatype, it returns null.
select convert(float, '1,0,1')
where try_convert(float, '1,0,1') is not null
If you are on an older version of SQL, I would write my own function.
I usually face with this when the value in a column you are trying to convert to float contains a comma (,) as thousand separator:
SELECT ISNUMERIC('140,523.86')
The Result is 1, but unable to cast it as a float.
By replacing it works fine for me:
SELECT
CAST( replace(s,',','') AS float ) AS Result
FROM t
WHERE ISNUMERIC(replace(s,',','')) = 1
ISNUMERIC() function will return 1 for values like 123e3 because these values are Interpreted as numeric values. Because sql server sees this as 123 , 3 to the powers of 10 which is really a numeric value.
You should try something like....
Select *
From tableName
WHERE Col NOT LIKE '%[^0-9]%'
This will return any row where there is a non-numeric character, even values with a ..

The above is a part of a query that I am trying to run but returns an error:

The Problem is decimal(3,3) --> this means a number with 3 digit, 3 of them behind the decimal point. If you want a number like this 1234567.123 you would have do declare it as decimal(10,3)
Try this:
SELECT CAST ((SUM(r.SalesVolume)/1000.0) AS decimal(6,3)) FROM RawData r
decimal(3,3) means that you allow numbers with 3 digits in total, and 3 of these are behind the comma ... I think you meant decimal(6,3)
EDIT: In addition, you need to to divide by 1000.0, not by 1000.
If you divide by 1000, it is an integer division.
If you divide by 1000.0, then it becomes a decimal division, with commas.
Try following:
SELECT CAST ((SUM(r.SalesVolume)/1000) AS numeric(6,3)) FROM RawData r
I have some sales numbers in a string column that I need to convert to some format so that i can calculate them with each other but I get this error while trying to convert them.
Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '-6.353,35' to data type int.
I'm not allowed to lose any money by rounding it up. It doesnt mather but in what type i convert as long as im not rounding them up. What's your thoughts?
For example i have -6.353,35 and 300,30 and i want to sum them too -6.053,05
try this...
select convert(int,convert(float,replace('-6.353,35',',','')))
as there are (,) Commas it cannot be converted to float,so remove the (,)commas after converting to float we can convert to int
If you want decimal values, then you should use float
select convert(float,replace('-6.353,35',',',''))

Like #marc_s suggested, it is preferred to use decimal rather than float
select convert(decimal,replace('-6.353,35',',',''))
Firstly, you want to convert this to a decimal value, not an int, as you will lose anything after decimal point otherwise.
The problem here is the separators that are being used when storing your values.
With your numbers, you have points . to represent thousand separators and commas , to represent decimal points.
To enable you to convert the value to a valid decimal you need to have it in a format that SQL Server can process.
A simple way to do this would be to remove/replace the problem characters before trying to convert the value:
DECLARE #val AS VARCHAR(10) = '-6.353,35'
-- step 1: remove thousand separator
SET #val = REPLACE(#val, '.', '')
SELECT #val AS RemoveThousandSeparator
-- step 2: replace decimal separator with decimal point
SET #val = REPLACE(#val, ',', '.')
SELECT CONVERT(DECIMAL(18,2), #val) AS DecimalPointAdded
-- to do it in one statement:
SET #val = '-6.353,35'
SELECT CONVERT(DECIMAL(18,2),
REPLACE(REPLACE(#val, '.', ''), ',', '.')) AS NumericeRepresentation
Aside from this, you would be much better off storing numeric values in the correct format in the first place to avoid this kind of workaround.
