send data to serial Keil uvision - serialization

I am looking for a GUI window in Keil uvision4 to send data to the serial. When I open serial window (USART #1-3), I am not able to type any characters on the screen to send to the serial.
Is there a way to manually type data that will be seen by the simulating environment (uvision) as having been received on the serial port?

The serial window should do what you're asking for in simulation. You may need to confirm that you have correctly configured your simulation, and the serial port you're using is the same one which you are monitoring in software.

USB port to detect "close" or "open" switch

I need to make a program that would play a sound as I press a push button switch. My idea is to use the USB port, and that if I short 2 wires from it (like for example the data+ and data-), the program would play a sound repeatedly while the 2 wires are shorted. Is my idea possible and simple to do? Can you please help me do it using VB? Thanks a lot for any help.
No, that is not practical. USB ports do not have that feature is far as I know. There are plenty of small, cheap USB microcontroller boards that are up to the task though.
For example, you could get an A-Star 32U4 Micro, program it using the Arduino IDE, and make it send a certain message on the its virtual COM port (which is accessed from the Serial object) when a button is pressed and another message when it is released. Then in Visual Basc, you would use the SerialPort class to connect to the A-Star's COM port and listen for that message.
USB ports are mainly used for transmitter and receiver communications for data transfers. They are not used for open or closed switch detection. In order to use a USB port for switch detection, you can used a serial to USB conversion breakout board with a specialized IC chip designed to detect an open or closed switch and communicate this via the USB protocols to send out a communications data transmission that a switch has just been open or closed. Then you would program an application in any language to listen on that USB port for this specific data transmission for a closed or open thrown switch. You can potentially detect about 4 switches opened or closed simultaneously if you want. And this serial to USB breakout board can easily be purchased online at:

PySerial: Create serial object without opening port

I'm running some code on Arduino, I have website with a slider which uses a cgi script to pass values to Python. Then the python script uses pySerial to send the values to Arduino which controls a motor.
The plan was to be able to control the motor speed using the slider on the website.
However I seem to be coming up against a problem of the Arduino resetting whenever I change a value on the website, causing the motor to stop. Is there any way around this? My python code is below.

So, say I have the motor running at 50% speed, then change a value on the website, it runs this script which executes the serial.Serial('dev/ttyACM0', 9600) command. That opens the port which resets the arduino, stopping the motor before passing the new command.
Is there any way to pass ser.write("%s\n" % (form["value"])) to the arduino without freshly opening the port? Such as leaving the port open between python sessions?
If not, is there any other way around this problem?
I believe the reset is due to a hardware design of the specific Arduino device you are using. I suggest using an Arduino Micro or Leonardo board instead. They use a virtual serial port and should not restart your sketch each time a serial port is opened. This is from the Arduino site:
No reset when you open the serial port.
Unlike the Arduino Uno, the Leonardo and Micro won't restart your
sketch when you open a serial port on the computer. That means you
won't see serial data that's already been sent to the computer by the
board, including, for example, most data sent in the setup() function.

Since the boards do not have a dedicated chip to handle serial
communication, it means that the serial port is virtual -- it's a
software routine, both on your operating system, and on the board
itself. Just as your computer creates an instance of the serial port
driver when you plug in any Arduino, the Leonardo/Micro creates a
serial instance whenever it runs its bootloader. The board is an
instance of USB's Connected Device Class (CDC) driver. This means that
every time you reset the board, the USB serial connection will be
broken and re-established. The board will disappear from the list of
serial ports, and the list will re-enumerate. Any program that has an
open serial connection to the Leonardo will lose its connection. This
is in contrast to the Arduino Uno, with which you can reset the main
processor (the ATmega328P) without closing the USB connection (which
is maintained by the secondary ATmega8U2 or ATmega16U2 processor).
This difference has implications for driver installation, uploading,
and communication...
I you might be able to use the setDTR(False), but I have tested this yet. A while back they fixed the bug that were initially associated with setDTR. What operating system are you use this on?

Is there way to tell terminal wait before send more data?

I have embedded firmware which have terminal over serial transmission. I am doing command from terminal which waits data (text file) which it should save to flash chip. However, writing flash is much slower than terminal transmission.
Text file may be pretty big (many kB), so in small embedded environment I cannot simply dump it to RAM. I though if it possible to communicate with standard terminal emulator (which have drag/dop support for files) to pause transmission every time when write buffer is full and tell continue again after write is done? I haven't find anything which may help me throught this.
Well, offcourse I can make PC frontend which understands this trick, but in basic level it should be nice if all function can be used through normal terminal if needed.
For a basic serial connection you could see if the hardware supports flow control. This would be the CTS, RTS lines (clear to send, request to send).

However many simple embedded systems do not implement this type of flow control.
If the hardware does not support flow control, then you will have to look at using some form of software flow control. You maybe able to implement the Xon/Xoff flow control ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XON/XOFF ) or could implement a simple file transfer protocol, like XMODEM, or ZMODEM, or even tftp. This depends on what your terminal can support.
I always use XMODEM when programming data into FLASH via a serial link from a PC. When using XMODEM it only sends one data packet at a time and waits for you to acknowledge the packet before sending the next one.
This means we control the flow via software on the receiving side:

XMODEM can be implemented on the smallest of devices (less than 1K RAM) and the code is very simple. All serial terminals support XMODEM (upto windows XP ship with an XMODEM capable terminal). XMODEM requires no special hardware.

How to access a PCMCIA modem's serial number?

A Sprint cellular modem plugs into a laptop - often the PCMCIA slot. To connect, the user opens a program called the Connection Manager. This program has a menu option to display the serial number and phone number of the modem that's currently inserted.
Does that imply that the serial/phone number of the modem could be available to other programs running on the system? (Note: let's assume this is Windows XP.)
Specifically, could a company's VPN software be configured to pass along information about which modem is being used to connect?
Finally, is there existing VPN software that already does this, or would it have to be custom-programmed?
Sometimes you can get the modem's serial number using the AT command set. To see this in action, go to your control panel and open up Phone and Modem Options. Select the Modems tab, select the modem you're interested in, and choose Properties.
In the modem window, select the Diagnostics tab, and press the Query Modem button.
This opens the serial port and sends a series of AT commands to gather various settings and information. You can open the serial port in your program (or a terminal program), send the AT command, and get the same information back.
You may need to check your specific modem's AT command set to find where the serial number is stored, or use a serial port spy program to see how Sprint's program does it.
I'm not aware of any VPNs that use this information, and I can think of several ways to spoof it, since communications between the modem and the computer are not cryptographically secure.

How do I determine which process is using a serial port?

The company I work for makes hardware that communicates to the computer though a serial port. Third party companies write software that communicates with our hardware.
There are times when I need to diagnose our hardware. However, a third party software app connects to the serial port when Windows starts up, blocking any other connection. I don't know the name of this application/service and it's not always the same one.
Is there any way to either:
Find the name/pid of the app/service that is currently using a given serial port or
Steal the serial port connection from another app.
vb.net preferably, but I'll take a language agnostic answer as well.
You can use the process explorer tool also from SysInternals to search for open handles. In this case you would want to search for 'Serial' since it uses device names that may not map to com port numbers. (e.g. COM1 is \Device\Serial0 on my system).
If you want to take control of the serial port from another app I think you would need co-operation of the driver.
As Rob Walker said, you can find who's using a serial port using Process Explorer. Most of the time, typing Ctrl+F and searching for "serial" will show you who has a serial port open, but I just ran into a situation where my "COM3" serial port's handle appeared as "\Device\VCP0". It may be strange because it was running under VirtualBox with a USB-to-serial connector.
If searching for "serial" and "device\vcp" don't get you any results, you may be able to figure out how serial port handles are named by opening one with a known program. In Process Explorer, display the lower pane with each process's open handles by typing Ctrl+L. Click on the process that you used to open the serial port and look through the lower pane to see which handles look like they might be a serial port. You can open and close the port while you're looking, and the file handle should appear and disappear, as well as being highlighted in green or red. Of course, this is only possible if you have more than one serial port or the serial port you're trying to diagnose isn't always locked by some mystery process.
Sysinternals has a slew of utilities I find very useful and educational for tracking down what processes are doing to the system.
They have a utility that does exactly what you need called Portmon, and give some information on how it works near the bottom of the page. That info and a few well-asked questions will probably give you everything you need to implement it yourself if the utility isn't enough.
