How to always show scrollbar? - xaml

How to always show the scrollbar in a UWP app?
The scrollbar always disappears after a few seconds.
I have tried setting ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Visible", but the scrollbar still disappears.
I have had a look at the Xaml UI Basics sample, and the scroll bars also disappear here regardless of what properties I set.
This answer for Windows Phone 8 suggests modifying the scroll viewer template, but that seems like overkill.
Any ideas?

For UWP use this style
<!-- In default here i enabled horizontal scrollbar visibility and mode you can disable it if you want -->
<Style x:Key="MyScrollViewerStyle" TargetType="ScrollViewer">
<Setter Property="HorizontalScrollMode" Value="Enabled"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalScrollMode" Value="Enabled"/>

<Setter Property="IsTabStop" Value="False"/>
<Setter Property="ZoomMode" Value="Disabled"/>
<Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="Left"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalContentAlignment" Value="Top"/>
<Setter Property="VerticalScrollBarVisibility" Value="Visible"/>

How to change the style of Page Button in Master-Detail Page for UWP

I want to style the Page Button in UWP for a master detail page. With the help of the Live Visual Tree I found out that it should be the ContentTogglePane button.
<StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" VerticalAlignment="Center" Background="{TemplateBinding ToolbarBackground}" >
<Button Name="ContentTogglePane" Style="{ThemeResource PaneButton}" Foreground="{TemplateBinding ToolbarForeground}"
Visibility="{TemplateBinding ContentTogglePaneButtonVisibility}" />
<Border Height="{ThemeResource TitleBarHeight}" Visibility="{TemplateBinding DetailTitleVisibility}">
<TextBlock Text="{TemplateBinding DetailTitle}" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="10,0,0,0" Foreground="{TemplateBinding ToolbarForeground}" Style="{ThemeResource TitleTextBlockStyle}" />
</Border>
</StackPanel>
The style is defined in this way:
<Style TargetType="Button" x:Key="PaneButton">
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{ThemeResource SymbolThemeFontFamily}" />
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="20" />
<Setter Property="Height" Value="48" />
<Setter Property="Width" Value="48" />
<Setter Property="Content" Value="" />
</Style>
I've tried to modify the default button style and all other button changes except the ContentTogglePane button. I want to remove the border and change the text color on hover as well as the background.
Which style do I have to overwrite to accomplish this? Ideally, only the ContentTogglePane button is overwritten.
I want to remove the border and change the text color on hover as well as the background.
I think you've found the default template style of MasterDetailControl and PaneButton, then you can copy them into the App.xaml file of the UWP project (aka. Application resource of UWP app). Since you want to change the style when the button is on hover, we still need the default Button styles and templates, copy the <Setter Property="Template">...</Setter> part into the style for PaneButton. The "on hover" behavior is controlled by <VisualState x:Name="PointerOver"> in the default button style.
All needed resources is now in application resource, we can simply modify them as we did in standard UWP app. For example:
<Application

UWP - DatePicker and TimePicker customization

I would like to use DatePicker and TimePicker on the same line (horizontally). My problem is these controls are too wide. So I customized them to reduce the content but I can't reduce the width because the flyout is too wide. So I search a way to customize the flyout or to have a different size for the control and the flyout.
Here is my DatePicker style:
<Style TargetType="DatePicker">

To customize the flyout, we can edit the styles and templates of DatePickerFlyoutPresenter and TimePickerFlyoutPresenter. And we can find these styles in generic.xaml which is available in the \(Program Files)\Windows Kits\10\DesignTime\CommonConfiguration\Neutral\UAP\10.0.14393.0\Generic folder from a Windows SDK installation. For different SDK version, the path is different and the styles and resources might have different values. Using the default style for DatePickerFlyoutPresenter in 14393 for example:
<!-- Default style for Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls.DatePickerFlyoutPresenter -->
<Style TargetType="DatePickerFlyoutPresenter">
<Setter Property="Width" Value="296" />
<Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="296" />
<Setter Property="MaxHeight" Value="398" />
<Setter Property="IsTabStop" Value="False" />
<Setter Property="FontFamily" Value="{ThemeResource ContentControlThemeFontFamily}" />
<Setter Property="FontWeight" Value="Normal" />
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{ThemeResource ControlContentThemeFontSize}" />
<Setter Property="Background" Value="{ThemeResource DatePickerFlyoutPresenterBackground}" />
<Setter Property="AutomationProperties.AutomationId" Value="DatePickerFlyoutPresenter" />
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{ThemeResource DatePickerFlyoutPresenterBorderBrush}" />
<Setter Property="BorderThickness" Value="{ThemeResource DateTimeFlyoutBorderThickness}" />
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="DatePickerFlyoutPresenter">

Grid.Column="1" />
<Rectangle x:Name="SecondPickerSpacing"

Grid.Column="3" />
</Grid>
<Grid Grid.Row="1" Height="45" x:Name="AcceptDismissHostGrid">

</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
We can change the Grid.ColumnDefinitions to reduce the width.
But please note that although, there are Width and MinWidth properties in DatePickerFlyoutPresenter, but change them has no effect. DatePickerFlyoutPresenter's width is determined by DatePicker. They have the same width. If we changed DatePicker's width, the flyout will automatically adjust its width.
Besides, in DatePickerFlyoutPresenter, we can't change ColumnDefinition's width to Auto like what you've done in DatePicker's style. Because in DatePickerFlyoutPresenter, "DayColumn", "MonthColumn" and "YearColumn" are populated with LoopingSelector, which uses a panel like Canvas inside. If we set the column's width to Auto, LoopingSelector's width will be zero and users can't see anything.
So there may be not so much things we can customize, and we'd better set a fixed width for DatePicker like following to make sure users can see complete elements in the picker or in the picker's flyout.
<DatePicker Width="200" MinWidth="0" />
TimePicker is the same like DatePicker. If you want more flexibility, I'd suggest using a new custom control. Here is a blog about DatePicker calendar custom control for WinRT Xaml. You can refer to the blog and the source code on Codeplex to implement your own.
In order to apply cusom style changes to DatePickerFlyoutPresenter of DatePicker and TimePicker, the customized DatePickerFlyoutPresenter style should be applied as application level. I mean, the customized changes should present in (App.xaml), since the DatePickerFlyoutPresenter is application level popup. If it is applied page level or control level, it will not take any effect.

XAML rendering issues after adaptive trigger is applied

In my UWP app I have a Pivot control as my main navigation control. Usually the Pivot headers are placed on the top of the screen. What I am trying to achieve is to move the Pivot headers to the bottom if the user is using a mobile device.
I have 2 styles defined for each state. The first style is the default Pivot style.
The second style is the bottom state (differences between both are highlighted):

Then I define the VisualStates which apply the styles:
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="WindowStates">
<VisualState x:Name="WideState">
<VisualState.StateTriggers>
<AdaptiveTrigger MinWindowWidth="800" />
</VisualState.StateTriggers>
<VisualState.Setters>
<Setter Target="MasterPivot.Style" Value="{StaticResource PivotStyleTop}" />
</VisualState.Setters>
</VisualState>
<VisualState x:Name="NarrowState">
<VisualState.StateTriggers>
<AdaptiveTrigger MinWindowWidth="0" />
</VisualState.StateTriggers>
<VisualState.Setters>
<Setter Target="MasterPivot.Style" Value="{StaticResource PivotStyleBottom}" />
</VisualState.Setters>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
When I first run the application I can see the pivot header (I have added a background colour to highlight the Pivot control)
Resizing the window to a narrow state causes the trigger to execute but hides away the pivot header
The headers are not visible even after resizing the widow back to a wider state. When resizing slowly I can see the headers flickering on the screen then disappearing again.
Here is a sample project to reproduce the issue:
http://1drv.ms/1N1Nm8q
I have to recognize that the Pivot control is really bad hardcoded, because if the ScrollViewer in its template changes all inside disappears and gets broken. (Also happens if you try to remove the ScrollViewer from the template)
Here is the solution I found:
Add a name to the main Grid and the CurrentStateChanged event handler
<Grid x:Name="MainGrid">
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="WindowStates" CurrentStateChanged="WindowStates_CurrentStateChanged">
and now remove and insert in the visual tree:
private async void WindowStates_CurrentStateChanged(object sender, VisualStateChangedEventArgs e)
{
MainGrid.Children.Remove(MasterPivot);
await Task.Delay(100);
MainGrid.Children.Insert(0, MasterPivot);
}
This makes to recreate the style and the hardcoded code of the Pivot is created fine again.

Unwanted margins in Button

I am trying to make a simple grid of 5 columns and 11 rows of squares with regular spacing between them that will work on all the resolutions. As you can see in the image I get squares alright (in red) but there is space between the rows. When I click on this "empty" space a button gets selected. Which is strange, as if there was some invisible margins or paddings on top and bottom of the button.
<ScrollViewer x:Name="myScrollViewer">
<Grid x:Name="aGrid" Background="#FF8AC731" >
<Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*" x:Name="aColumn"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
<ColumnDefinition Width="*"/>
</Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
<Grid.RowDefinitions>
<RowDefinition MinHeight="50" x:Name="aRow" />
<RowDefinition MinHeight="{Binding ActualWidth, ElementName=aColumn}"/>
<RowDefinition MinHeight="{Binding ActualWidth, ElementName=aColumn}"/>

Yes, there are indeed margins on the standard button.
You can apply a custom style to your buttons.
The following button style has no margins, and works in WP7 (it might need tweaking for WP8.) Put it in your app.xaml and then set the style when you use the button with Style="{StaticResource CustomButtonStyle}"
<Application.Resources>
<Style x:Key="CustomButtonStyle" TargetType="Button">
<Setter Property="Background" Value="Transparent"/>
<Setter Property="BorderBrush" Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"/>

As I know Buttons have margins by themselves

How to Theme a ListPicker from Style

I have the following default style of the ListPicker control from the WPToolkit
<Style TargetType="toolkit:ListPicker" x:Key="ListPickerStyle1">
<!--<Setter Property="Background" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxBrush}"/>-->
<Setter Property="Foreground" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxForegroundBrush}"/>
<Setter Property="FontSize" Value="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeMediumLarge}"/>
<Setter Property="HorizontalContentAlignment" Value="Left"/>
<Setter Property="Margin" Value="{StaticResource PhoneTouchTargetOverhang}"/>
<Setter Property="Template">
<Setter.Value>
<ControlTemplate TargetType="toolkit:ListPicker">
<StackPanel>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="PickerStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Expanded">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames
Storyboard.TargetName="Border"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background"
Duration="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame
Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxEditBackgroundColor}"
KeyTime="0"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames
Storyboard.TargetName="Border"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush"
Duration="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame
Value="{StaticResource PhoneTextBoxEditBorderBrush}"
KeyTime="0"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
</VisualStateGroup>
</VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<ContentControl
Content="{TemplateBinding Header}"
ContentTemplate="{TemplateBinding HeaderTemplate}"
Foreground="{StaticResource PhoneSubtleBrush}"
FontSize="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeNormal}"
HorizontalContentAlignment="{TemplateBinding HorizontalContentAlignment}"
Margin="0 0 0 8"/>
<Grid>
<Border
x:Name="Border"
Background="{TemplateBinding Background}"
BorderBrush="{TemplateBinding Background}"
BorderThickness="2">
<Canvas x:Name="ItemsPresenterHost" MinHeight="46">
<ItemsPresenter x:Name="ItemsPresenter">
<ItemsPresenter.RenderTransform>
<TranslateTransform x:Name="ItemsPresenterTranslateTransform"/>
</ItemsPresenter.RenderTransform>
</ItemsPresenter>
</Canvas>
</Border>
<!--<Popup x:Name="FullModePopup">
<Border Background="{StaticResource PhoneChromeBrush}">

<Grid>
<Grid.RowDefinitions>
<RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
<RowDefinition/>
</Grid.RowDefinitions>
<ContentControl
Grid.Row="0"
Content="{TemplateBinding FullModeHeader}"
Foreground="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"
FontFamily="{StaticResource PhoneFontFamilySemiBold}"
FontSize="{StaticResource PhoneFontSizeMedium}"
HorizontalAlignment="Left"
Margin="24 12 0 0"/>
<ListBox
x:Name="FullModeSelector"
Grid.Row="1"
ItemTemplate="{TemplateBinding ActualFullModeItemTemplate}"
FontSize="{TemplateBinding FontSize}"
Margin="{StaticResource PhoneMargin}">

--><!-- Ensures all containers will be available during the Loaded event --><!--
</ItemsPanelTemplate>
</ListBox.ItemsPanel>
</ListBox>
</Grid>
</Border>
</Popup>-->
</Grid>
</StackPanel>
</ControlTemplate>
</Setter.Value>
</Setter>
</Style>
But I would like to be able to add a border with a certain color based upon whether it is in the Expanded state or not. Also, the background needs to match the PhoneBackgroundBrush in the expanded state. Currently using this Style the Background does not change when the ListPicker is Expanded, and no border shows up whether the ListPicker is expanded or not. What can I do to change this?
Apply a template to your ListPicker
<toolkit:ListPicker Template="{StaticResource ListPickerControlTemplate1}">
Where ListPickerControlTemplate1 is a control template with Highlighted VisualState in which you can change the border brush, background color etc. In this case, I'm using a yellow background
<ControlTemplate x:Key="ListPickerControlTemplate1" TargetType="toolkit:ListPicker">
<StackPanel>
<VisualStateManager.VisualStateGroups>
<VisualStateGroup x:Name="PickerStates">
<VisualState x:Name="Normal"/>
<VisualState x:Name="Highlighted">
<Storyboard>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames
Storyboard.TargetName="UserControl"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="Foreground"
Duration="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame
Value="{StaticResource PhoneForegroundBrush}"
KeyTime="0"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames
Storyboard.TargetName="Border"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="Background"
Duration="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame
Value="{StaticResource PhoneBackgroundBrush}"
KeyTime="0"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
<ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames
Storyboard.TargetName="Border"
Storyboard.TargetProperty="BorderBrush"
Duration="0">
<DiscreteObjectKeyFrame
Value="Yellow"
KeyTime="0"/>
</ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames>
</Storyboard>
</VisualState>
....
...........
</ControlTemplate>
I removed the ContentControl and some other parts from the control template because it's not so relevant.
