I am using two workbooks at a time. The first workbook is the current workbook and the second will be opened while programming execution. I have made the global objects of the workbooks and worksheets. I'm having issues with using the worksheets simultaneously. The error is ERROR: object variable or with block variable, not set. I have mentioned the error in the comment in the second subroutine.
Dim WB As Workbook
Dim WB2 As Workbook
Dim WKS As Worksheet
Dim WKS2 As Worksheet
Sub Button1_Click()
Dim fd As Office.FileDialog
Set fd = Application.FileDialog(msoFileDialogFilePicker)
Set WB = ThisWorkbook
WB.Activate
fd.AllowMultiSelect = False
fd.Title = "Provide a title here."
fd.InitialFileName = ThisWorkbook.Path
If fd.Show() = True Then
strFile = fd.SelectedItems(1)
Set WB2 = Workbooks.Open(strFile)
Set WSK2 = WB2.Sheets("Schweitzer Analysis")
CalculateGrades
Else
MsgBox ("No file selected")
End If
End Sub
Sub CalculateGrades()
' first clear the contents where grades results can appear
clearGradesContents
Dim index As Integer ' for current sheet
Dim index2 As Integer ' for student sheet
Dim countCorrect As Integer ' to count no of correct answers
index = 2
index = 8
countCorrect = 0
' this first error here
' ERROR: object variable or with block variable not set
Set WKS = WB.ActiveSheet
Do While index <= 21
' the SECOND error shows here
If WKS.Cells(index, 2) = WKS2.Cells(index2, 3) Then
Count = Count + 1
Else
WKS.Cells(index, 5) = WKS2.Cells(index2, 3)
End If
If WKS.Cells(index, 3) = WKS2.Cells(index2, 4) Then
Count = Count + 1
Else
WKS.Cells(index, 6) = WKS2.Cells(index2, 4)
End If
index2 = index2 + 1
index = index + 1
Loop
End Sub
Sub clearGradesContents()
Range("E2:F21").Select
Selection.ClearContents
Range("I2:I3").Select
Selection.ClearContents
End Sub
EDIT: sorry for the previous answer, I hadn't seen your global declarations on top and I was sure it was because you hadn't declare it.
I think the issue is the following:
[...]
Set WB = ThisWorkbook
WB.Activate '<-- WB is the active workbook now
[...]
Set WB2 = Workbooks.Open(strFile) '<-- WB2 is the active workbook now!
Set WSK2 = WB2.Sheets("Schweitzer Analysis")
CalculateGrades '<-- going to next macro
[...]
Set WKS = WB.ActiveSheet '<-- ERROR: WB2 is the active workbook. WB can't have an active sheet if it's not the active workbook
Then of course, being WKS not correctly set, you can't execute this:
If WKS.Cells(index, 2) = WKS2.Cells(index2, 3) Then
I have no way to test it now, but I think that should be the issue.
To solve it,
If you really need WKS to be the ActiveSheet
Dim activeSheetName As String
...
Sub Button1Click()
...
Set WB = ThisWorkbook
WB.Activate
activeSheetName = WB.ActiveSheet.Name
...
End Sub
Sub CalculateGrades()
...
Set WKS = WB.Sheets(activeSheetName)
...
If you already know the name of the sheet you need
Just write:
Set WKS = WB.Sheets("your sheet")
instead of
Set WKS = WB.ActiveSheet

This question is vaguely similar to renaming multiple worksheets from list using VBA, but is too different to get the answer from that question.
I will regularly need to rename dozens of worksheets in various incoming workbooks.
I wish to rename all worksheets by first copying all the worksheet names into a secondWorkbook.sheets(1) colA, manually creating new names in ColB, and then run a second macro to update the names in the originalWorkbook.
I am stuck on the second macro, but will provide both macros below. If anyone has a shorter/better way of writing these macros, I am all eyes.
First macro - copy all worksheet names into a new workbook.sheet(1).colA. This works, and creates a new unsaved workbook with the tab names in ColA
Sub GrabAllTabNamesIntoTempWorkbookColA()
Dim tst, tmp, allTabNames As String
Dim i, cnt, cnt2 As Long
Dim wb, wbTmp As Workbook, xWs, ws1 As Worksheet
Dim arrOldNames, arrNewNames As Variant
ReDim arrOldNames(999)
cnt = 0
With ActiveWorkbook
For Each xWs In .Worksheets
If xWs.Visible = xlSheetVisible Then
arrOldNames(cnt) = xWs.Name
cnt = cnt + 1
End If
Next
End With
ReDim Preserve arrOldNames(cnt - 1)
cnt2 = 1
Set wbTmp = Workbooks.Add
Set ws1 = wbTmp.Sheets(1)
For i = 1 To cnt
ws1.Range("A" & i).Value = arrOldNames(i - 1)
Next
MsgBox "Done. Copied " & cnt & " tab names."
End Sub
Here is the macro I am stuck on. Both workbooks are open on screen, and I don't mind editing the macro to provide the workbook names. Unsure how to reference an unsaved workbook with a name like "Book4 - Microsoft Excel", so I have been saving it as Temp.xlsx and referencing it as namesWb. The workbook with the tabs to be renamed is referenced as targetWb
Sub RenameAllTabsFromColAInTempWorkbook()
Dim namesWb, targetWb As Workbook
Dim colA, colB As Variant
Set namesWb = Windows("Temp.xlsx")
Set targetWb = ActiveWorkbook
ReDim colA(999), colB(999)
cnt = 0
With namesWb
Sheets(1).Activate
For i = 1 To 999
If Range("A" & i).Value = "" Then Exit For
colA(i - 1) = Range("A" & i).Value
colB(i - 1) = Range("B" & i).Value
cnt = cnt + 1
Next
ReDim Preserve colA(cnt)
ReDim Preserve colB(cnt)
End With
For each oldname in colA()
'Stuck here...
Next
End Sub
I realize that I could again loop through the targetWb and, for each tabname, find the location of that tabname in ColA() and rename it with the same position name from tabB() - but I am wondering if there is a faster/better way to do this.
You can loop through active workbooks like this:
Sub t()
Dim mainWB As Workbook, tempWB As Workbook
Dim wb As Workbook
Set mainWB = ActiveWorkbook
For Each wb In Application.Workbooks
'Loops through the workbooks.
Debug.Print wb.Name
If wb.Name Like "Book*" Then
Set tempWB = wb
End If
Next wb
End Sub
Edit: Since you only have two open workbooks, you can shorten that:
Sub t()
Dim mainWB As Workbook, tempWB As Workbook
Dim wb As Workbook
Set mainWB = ActiveWorkbook ' MAKE SURE THIS IS CORRECT!! May need `ThisWorkbook` if the new temporary one becomes the active one.
For Each wb In Application.Workbooks
'Loops through the workbooks.
Debug.Print wb.Name
If wb.Name <> mainWB.Name And wb.Name <> "PERSONAL.XLSB" Then
Set tempWB = wb
' Now do whatever you need with the Temporary workbook.
End If
Next wb
End Sub
I've refactored both your Sub's to show a more robust method.
Dim all variables, with explicit types (some of yours were defaulting to Variant)
Record the Workbook being processed in the top of the Names list
Still processes the ActiveWorkbook
Save the Temp workbook into the same folder as ActiveWorkbook
Rename... now skips any missing new names
Detect missing OldNames (see comment in code, place any response you want there)
Detect failed Renames (eg could be invalid characters in the new names)
Sub GrabAllTabNamesIntoTempWorkbookColA()
Dim wbToRename As Workbook
Dim wbTmp As Workbook
Dim xWs As Worksheet
Dim ws1 As Worksheet
Dim arrOldNames As Variant
Dim arrNewNames As Variant
Dim cnt As Long
Set wbToRename = ActiveWorkbook
With wbToRename
' Size array based on number of sheets in workbook
ReDim arrOldNames(1 To .Worksheets.Count, 1 To 1)
cnt = 0
For Each xWs In .Worksheets
If xWs.Visible = xlSheetVisible Then
cnt = cnt + 1
arrOldNames(cnt, 1) = xWs.Name
End If
Next
End With
Set wbTmp = Workbooks.Add
Set ws1 = wbTmp.Sheets(1)
'Place data in sheet in one go
ws1.Cells(1, 1) = wbToRename.Name
ws1.Cells(2, 1).Resize(UBound(arrOldNames, 1), 1) = arrOldNames
MsgBox "Done. Copied " & cnt & " tab names."
'Save workbook
wbTmp.SaveAs Filename:=wbToRename.Path & "\Temp", FileFormat:=xlOpenXMLWorkbook
End Sub
Sub RenameAllTabsFromColAInTempWorkbook()
Dim namesWb As Workbook
Dim targetWb As Workbook
Dim wsNames As Worksheet
Dim ws As Worksheet
Dim NamesList As Variant
Dim cnt As Long
Dim i As Long
Set namesWb = Application.Workbooks("Temp.xlsx")
Set targetWb = Application.Workbooks(namesWb.Worksheets(1).Cells(1, 1).Value)
cnt = 0
Set wsNames = namesWb.Worksheets(1)
With wsNames
'Get Names into one variable, based on actual number of rows
NamesList = wsNames.Range(wsNames.Cells(2, 2), wsNames.Cells(wsNames.Rows.Count, 1).End(xlUp)).Value
For i = 1 To UBound(NamesList, 1)
' Check if the Name has been entered
If NamesList(i, 2) <> vbNullString Then
'Get reference to sheet by old name, and handle if sheet is missing
Set ws = Nothing
On Error Resume Next
Set ws = targetWb.Worksheets(NamesList(i, 1))
On Error GoTo 0
' Rename sheet
If Not ws Is Nothing Then
On Error Resume Next
ws.Name = NamesList(i, 2)
On Error GoTo 0
If ws.Name <> NamesList(i, 2) Then
' Rename failed! What now?
End If

Hi all and thanks in advance.
I currently have a VBA within my workbook to copy rows from "Demand Log" to "Change Log" when cells within column "O" have a specific value.
The VBA is working great, however I am now looking to split the two worksheets apart and have a separate workbook for each.
My question is - How can I change my VBA so that it copies and pastes between workbooks as opposed to between worksheets?
Please see my VBA code below:
Dim xRg As Range
Dim xCell As Range
Dim I As Long
Dim J As Long
Dim K As Long
I = Worksheets("Demand Log").UsedRange.Rows.Count
J = Worksheets("Change Log").Cells(Worksheets("Change Log").Rows.Count, "B").End(xlUp).Row
If J = 1 Then
If Application.WorksheetFunction.CountA(Worksheets("Change Log").Range) = 0 Then J = 0
End If
Set xRg = Worksheets("Demand Log").Range("O5:O" & I)
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
For K = xRg.Count To 1 Step -1
If CStr(xRg(K).Value) = "Change Team" Then
J = J + 1
With Worksheets("Demand Log")
Intersect(.Rows(xRg(K).Row), .Range("A:Z")).Copy Destination:=Worksheets("Change Log").Range("A" & J)
Intersect(.Rows(xRg(K).Row), .Range("A:Z")).Delete xlShiftUp
End With
End If
Next
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
You should refer to your worksheets and workbooks at the same time. So, instead of:
I = Worksheets("Demand Log").UsedRange.Rows.Count
You should type:
I = Workbooks("Book1").Worksheets("Demand Log").UsedRange.Rows.Count
anywhere in your code. For simplicity, you may set object variable, like:
Dim wb1 as Workbook
Set wb1 = Application.Workbooks("Book1")
or, better, set your worksheets as variables, for example:
Dim wsDemand as Worksheet
Set wsDemand = Workbooks("Book1").Worksheets("Demand Log")
and then you can use wsDemand instead of Worksheets("Demand Log") anywhere in your code.
Book1 is of course default workbook's name, your file has probably other name.
If the workbook is open then you can refer to it like this:
Workbooks("mybook.xls")[.method]
If the workbook is closed you need to open it: Workbooks.Open("C:\path\mybook.xls")[.method]
You can assign them to variables:
set wb = Workbooks("mybook.xls")
set wb = Workbooks.Open("C:\path\mybook.xls")
set ws = wb.Sheets("MySheet")
You can also get to the worksheet and assign it to a variable: (useful if you're working with a single sheet)
set ws = Workbooks("mybook.xls").Sheets("MySheet")
set ws = Workbooks.Open("C:\path\mybook.xls").Sheets("MySheet")
Untested, but give it a try:
Sub mysub()
Dim xRg As Range
Dim xCell As Range
Dim I As Long
Dim J As Long
Dim K As Long
Dim wbDem As Workbook
Dim wbChg As Workbook
Dim wsDem As Worksheet
Dim wsChg As Worksheet
'Open/Get Workbook
If Application.Workbooks("Demand.xls") Is Nothing Then
Set wbDem = Application.Workbooks.Open("C:\path\Demand.xls")
Else
Set wbDem = Application.Workbooks("Demand.xls")
End If
'Open/Get Workbook
If Application.Workbooks("Change") Is Nothing Then
Set wbChg = Application.Workbooks.Open("C:\path\Change.xls")
Else
Set wbChg = Application.Workbooks("Change.xls")
End If
'Set Sheet Variables
Set wsDem = wbDem.Worksheets("Demand Log")
Set wsChg = wbChg.Worksheets("Change Log")
I = wsDem.UsedRange.Rows.Count
J = wsChg.Cells(wbChg.Rows.Count, "B").End(xlUp).Row
If J = 1 Then
If Application.WorksheetFunction.CountA(wbChg.Range) = 0 Then J = 0
End If
Set xRg = wsDem.Range("O5:O" & I)
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
For K = xRg.Count To 1 Step -1
If CStr(xRg(K).value) = "Change Team" Then
J = J + 1
With wsDem
Intersect(.Rows(xRg(K).Row), .Range("A:Z")).Copy Destination:=wsChg.Range("A" & J)
Intersect(.Rows(xRg(K).Row), .Range("A:Z")).Delete xlShiftUp
End With
End If
Next
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub
Below is the excerpt of code where the "error(more like an unwanted occurrence)" happens. My code is running in a userform (not userform1) after a command button click. The initial form shows on workbook open. The second userform - UserForm1 in the code below - is a check box that I want to present to the user upon my IF condition. When the program gets there, it opens the UserForm1, but also opens a blank grey excel workbook. The workbook cannot be closed until I close the Userformm1 interface.
Note: the second msgbox does not display until AFTER I close the userform.
I tried searching for this problem, but couldn't find the issue in regards to UserForm stuff. Thanks in advance for any help.

End Sub
THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION, I tested a piece of your code and here is my feedback below.
I ran just this code in a workbook named testbook.xslm and I created a form (myForm that is just a grey layout, nothing on it):
Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Dim wb As Workbook
Dim anotherbook As Workbook
Dim anotherbook2 As Workbook
Dim anotherbook3 As Workbook
Set wb = Workbooks.Add
Set anotherbook = wb
Set anotherbook2 = wb
Set anotherbook3 = wb
MsgBox "h"
wb.Application.Visible = False
myForm.Show
wb.Application.Visible = True
MsgBox "h"
wb.Close
Application.ScreenUpdating = False ' from before also!
End Sub
From the user standpoint:
1) testbook opens
2) click the button -> book# opens on top of testbook
3) msgbox "h" pops up
4) x out of msgbox "h" -> Both workbooks disappear (testbook and book1)
5) my grey user form pops up (its empty)
6) x out of userform
7) testbook shows again on top of the new book created which is behind it
8) msgbox "h" #2 pops up
9) x out of msgbox
10) the book# behind testbook disappears
That's it. No grey box residue. How are you closing the userforms (the first one and the second one)? obviously I used the terminate with the x. I did not add any code. So how are you closing your form with no code?
Adding the same behavior occurs if I make multiple workbook references to wb.
So this code area is not your problem . . . .
Second test, still no problems, adding worksheets, running through the number of worksheets, copying them to the testbook.

I'm trying to assign the code name of a worksheet to a vriable.
Some times it gets the code name correctly, and sometimes it doesn't, the variable stays null.
Dim sCodeName As String
sCodeName = Worksheets(atar).CodeName
atar is a variable that contains the worksheet name.
When i stop the code running, and coninue in debug mode, it works fine.
What can be the reason?
Worksheets without qualification refers to same as ActiveWorkbook, perhaps you're assuming too much about which workbook is active in some instances.
It is recommended to fully qualify Worksheets. So get a reference to a Workbook object , say wbFoo and then use sCodeName = wbFoo.Worksheets(atar).CodeName
You could try something like the code below to verify that atar does exist in one of the worksheet names in ThisWorkbook.
Option Explicit
Sub GetWorksheetCodeName()
Dim sCodeName As String
Dim atar As String
Dim Sht As Worksheet
'atar = "Sheet3" '<-- for tests only
' loop through all worksheets in ThisWorkbook
For Each Sht In ThisWorkbook.Worksheets
If Sht.Name Like atar Then
sCodeName = Worksheets(atar).CodeName
Exit For
End If
Next Sht
End Sub

I'm trying to open a workbook and delete a sheet from it, but it runs the code without errors, and the sheet is still there...
I'm able to modify it, as I changed formulas to values on another sheet.
First of all - Yes, I know the "i" variable is set to do 1 iteration.
Somehow, now when I open the workbook it says it's locked by me - which I don't even know how to do.
So...how can I unlock it? When I go to File-->Info-->Permissions it says 'Anyone can copy, change and modify any part of this workbook.... I can delete the sheet manually as well...
Here's the code:
Sub Change()
Dim wb As Excel.Workbook
Set wb = ThisWorkbook
Dim ws As Excel.Worksheet
Set ws = wb.Sheets("FileSearch Results")
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = ws.UsedRange
Dim cPaths As Integer
cPaths = rng.Column
Dim i As Integer
i = rng.Row
Dim oExcel As Excel.Application
Set oExcel = New Excel.Application
Dim oWB As Workbook
Dim komm As Excel.Worksheet
Dim sh1 As Excel.Worksheet
Do While i < 2
Dim pth As String
pth = ws.Cells(i, cPaths)
Set oWB = oExcel.Workbooks.Open(pth)
Set sh1 = oWB.Worksheets("Sheet1")
With sh1.UsedRange
.Value = .Value
End With
Set komm = oWB.Worksheets("Kommentar")
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
komm.Delete
Application.DisplayAlerts = True
oWB.Close savechanges:=True
i = i + 1
Loop
End Sub
Any ideas?
Sub Change()
Dim wb As Excel.Workbook
Set wb = ActiveWorkbook 'ThisWorkbook
Dim ws As Excel.Worksheet
Set ws = wb.Sheets("FileSearch Results")
Dim rng As Range
Set rng = ws.UsedRange
Dim cPaths As Integer
cPaths = rng.Column
Dim i As Integer
i = rng.row
'Dim oExcel As Excel.Application ***CHANGED***
'Set oExcel = New Excel.Application ***CHANGED***
'Dim oWB As Workbook ***CHANGED***
Dim komm As Excel.Worksheet
Dim sh1 As Excel.Worksheet

Dim pth As String

'Set oWB = oExcel.Workbooks.Open(pth) ***CHANGED***

Application.DisplayAlerts = False
komm.Delete
Application.DisplayAlerts = True
ActiveWorkbook.Close savechanges:=True 'oWB.Close savechanges:=True ***CHANGED***
i = i + 1
Loop
End Sub
This now opens the workbook and deletes the sheet in the foreground rather than invoking a new instance of Excel and deleting the sheet in the background. This is why the file stays locked, as the new instance which isn't closed by the code, still holds it.
For anyone running into this in the future (like myself), the actual problem is with the mix up in scope when calling Application.DisplayAlerts.
komm is a sheet in oWB, which exists in the new instance of excel oExcel.
Application is a completely different instance and therefor has no effect.
Since the code isn't actually disabling the prompt in the correct instance of excel (oExcel) and it is presumably not visible, the code will just ignore the command and move on.
The simple fix is to use oExcel instead of Application:
Set komm = oWB.Worksheets("Kommentar")
oExcel.DisplayAlerts = False
komm.Delete
oExcel.DisplayAlerts = True
