Trying to connect to different data sources (VFP database and Access file) from inside Excel to extract specific data, based on the criteria from both sources and encountered problem of creating a combined query. The query to VFP table is already completed and now I need to address MS Access table.
I've tried to do it the following way, but no success:
"left join [tblInAccess] in " & "[Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data
Source='D:\Data\temp_dump.accdb'] on [tblInVFP].ID=[tblInAccess].ID"
Can anyone point to correct syntax?
UPD:
Whole query code (just query):
SELECT DB.DATE AS DBF_DATE,
DB.EN AS DBF_EN,
DB.NU AS DBF_NUMERO,
LIB.LL AS DBF_LIBELLE,
SUM(IIF(DB.DEBIT = '1000', - DB.AMOUNT, 0.00) + IIF(DB.CREDIT = '1000', DB.AMOUNT, 0.00))
FROM [VFP_DB] AS DB
LEFT JOIN (
SELECT LT.LL AS LL,
LT.EN
FROM [VFP_DB] AS LT
) AS LIB ON DB.EN = LIB.EN
LEFT JOIN (
SELECT id
FROM [Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source="D:\Data\temp_dump.accdb";].[tblTemp]
) TEMP_DB ON DB.NN = TEMP_DB.id
WHERE DB.DATE >= { ^ 2015.12 .30 }
AND DB.DATE <= { ^ 2017.01 .07 }
AND TEMP_DB.id IS NULL
GROUP BY DB.DATE,
DB.NU,
DB.EN,
LIB.LL
HAVING SUM(IIF(DB.DEBIT = '1000', - DB.AMOUNT, 0.00) + IIF(DB.CREDIT = '1000', DB.AMOUNT, 0.00)) <> 0
ORDER BY DB.DATE,
DB.NU,
DB.EN ASC
Actually, without the 2nd 'Left join' it's working correctly. Problems appeared when I tried to reference Access database
If you have are executing the query on an Access database, you don't need to specify the database type, only the location:
LEFT JOIN [tblInAccess] in D:\Data\temp_dump.accdb on [tblInVFP].ID=[tblInAccess].ID
See the MSDN for further details.
Also note: { ^ 2015.12 .30 } will likely cause a syntax error in Access. If you want to filter by a date, the proper syntax is #2015/12/30# to define a date constant.

I'm trying to select columns from two tables, Lignes and Détail Production. Détail Production links to the first one with the key NoLigne (which is the same name in both tables).
I know that I have to put [ ] or `` around the table's name, but I'm having the error No value given for one or more required parameters, which I believe means that SQL doesn't recognize the name. I tried aliasing the name of the table having a space in its name, but I have the same error. Here is my code:
SELECT
NoProduction,
Quantite,
DateMaxProd,
Lignes.Référence
FROM
[Détail Production] AS D
INNER JOIN
Lignes ON D.NoLigne = Lignes.NoLigne
WHERE
D.Soldee = 0 AND
D.EtatLigne = 0 AND
Lignes.Soldee = 0 AND
(QteRecue - Quantite - Acompter * NbHS)>0
Unfortunately, I can't get rid of the alias or the name of the table in the FROM and WHERE clause because my tables share columns with the same name. I can't rename the tables or the columns, and I'm actually using the software Windev which uses HFSQL as a dbms. I'm trying to connect to an access database with the OLEDB connector, and when I switch to HFSQL it works.
Here is a mre:
SELECT
*
FROM
[Détail Production]
INNER JOIN
Lignes ON [Détail Production].NoLigne = Lignes.NoLigne
When using HFSQL database, it works, when using OLEDB with an access database, it throws the error No value given for one or more required parameter
Thanks for your help.
I found the problem:
SELECT
D.NoProduction,
D.Quantite,
D.DateMaxProd,
Lignes.Référence
FROM
[Détail Production] AS D
INNER JOIN
Lignes ON D.NoLigne = Lignes.NoLigne
WHERE
D.Soldee = 0 AND
D.EtatLigne = 0 AND
Lignes.Soldee = 0 AND
(D.QteRecue - D.Quantite - D.Acompter * D.NbHS) > 0
I was missing the comparison on the last condition of the WHERE clause. I thought it was because of the alias or the brackets because others online had similar problems and the error changed as I tried other ways of writing the FROM clause. The right way to write a name with spaces in HFSQL is with brackets [ ]. Also, there were problems with names not matching accents from the database.
I'm using Access ADP as a front end to SQL. I have two tables:
One is Price_2018
One is Price_2020
I want to choose Price from the Price_2018 or the Price_2020 table, depending upon the Purchase_Date. I tried first putting IiF statement in the Query Designer:
Iif ([Purchase_Date] < Convert(DateTime, '2020-01-01 00:00:00'),[Price_2018],[Price_2020])
Access didn't allow that and ended up putting the whole thing in quotes in the SQL pane, so all I got was text output.
Someone suggested putting in the Select section:
CASE ([Purchase_Date] < CONVERT(DATETIME, '2020-01-01 00:00:00') WHEN 1 THEN [Price_2018] ELSE [Price_2020]
That didn't work either and gave me this error:
Error in list of function arguments: '<' not recognized.Error in list of function arguments: ',' not recognized.Error in list of function arguments: 'FROM' not recognized.
Unable to parse query text.
How to resolve this error. I'm not familiar with using a CASE statement in Access or SQL.
I combined 2 Price tables (combined table called VWC_2018_2020) as suggested. Full query:
SELECT TOP 100 PERCENT dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Service_ID, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Service_Date_From, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Update_Status, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Account_Number, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Service_Units, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Modifiers, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Procedure_Code, NormalUnionCPASumAdjustments.SumAmount AS Adjustment, NormalUnionCPASumPayments.SumAmount AS Payment, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Service_Fee AS Charge, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Service_Fee - ISNULL(NormalUnionCPASumPayments.SumAmount, 0) AS Unpaid, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Primary_Diagnosis_Code, LastInsurancePmt.last_insurance_pmt, dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Patient_Number, dbo.VWCFees_2018_2020.VWC_2020, dbo.VWCFees_2018_2020.VWC_2018, IIF (dbo.VHCSERVER_Ntier_VHC_dbo_vwGenSvcInfo.Service_Date_From < CDate('2020-01-01 00:00:00'),dbo.VWCFees_2018_2020.VWC_2018,dbo.VWCFees_2018_2020.VWC_2020) AS VWCFEE

Running in Access, gives error message: '<' not recognized. Missing FROM clause. Unable to parse query text.
What now? Thanks
Since ADP files use an SQL Server backend (no longer supported as of MS Access 2013), you must use its TSQL dialect which does support IIF (or CASE) and can compare dates with string representations without conversion.
Below I extend to fuller query assuming various columns. Adjust as needed:
SELECT
...
IIF(t.[Purchase_Date] < '2020-01-01', p18.price, p20.price)
...
FROM [Transactions] t
INNER JOIN [Price_2018] p18
ON t.price_id = p18.price_id
INNER JOIN [Price_2020] p20
ON t.price_id = p20.price_id
I transferred this code directly from SQL developer. Works perfectly in there.
SELECT
a.INCIDENT_NUMBER,
a.DETAILED_DESCRIPTION,
a.INCIDENT_ROOT_CAUSE
FROM
N_EVALUATION as a
INNER JOIN N_DISPOSITION as b
ON (a.INCIDENT_NUMBER = b.INCIDENT_NUMBER)
WHERE
b.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM in (NULL, 1) AND
a.ACTIVE_FLAG = 'Y' AND
b.ACTIVE_FLAG = 'Y' AND
a.DETAILED_DESCRIPTION IS NOT NULL
However when I transfer the same exact code into Tableau to create a custom SQL query. It gives me an error;
An error occurred while communicating with the data source. Bad
Connection: Tableau could not connect to the data source. Oracle
database error 907: ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
This has me completely stumped, not really sure what to do here. Any help or advice is much appreciated. I am more concerned regarding the missing right parenthesis rather than the bad connection.
Remove the AS from the FROM clause. Oracle does not recognize that.
In addition, this condition:
b.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM in (NULL, 1)
Does not do what you expect. It never evaluates to true if b.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM is NULL.
You should replace it with:
(b.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM IS NULL OR b.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM = 1)
Otherwise, your query looks like it has balanced parentheses, but you should write it as:
SELECT e.INCIDENT_NUMBER, e.DETAILED_DESCRIPTION, e.INCIDENT_ROOT_CAUSE
FROM N_EVALUATION e JOIN
N_DISPOSITION d
ON e.INCIDENT_NUMBER = d.INCIDENT_NUMBER
WHERE (d.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM IS NULL OR d.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM = 1) AND
e.ACTIVE_FLAG = 'Y' AND
d.ACTIVE_FLAG = 'Y' AND
e.DETAILED_DESCRIPTION IS NOT NULL;
Notes:
User meaningful table aliases rather than arbitrary letters (this uses abbreviations).
Do not use as in the FROM clause.
Be careful with NULL comparisons.
Finally, your original query is equivalent to:
SELECT e.INCIDENT_NUMBER, e.DETAILED_DESCRIPTION, e.INCIDENT_ROOT_CAUSE
FROM N_EVALUATION e JOIN
N_DISPOSITION d
ON e.INCIDENT_NUMBER = d.INCIDENT_NUMBER
WHERE d.DISPOSITION_LINE_NUM = 1 AND
e.ACTIVE_FLAG = 'Y' AND
d.ACTIVE_FLAG = 'Y' AND
e.DETAILED_DESCRIPTION IS NOT NULL;
This has no parentheses. So it cannot return that particular error.
I have the following SQL statement which returns the desired result in SQL Server 2012:
SELECT
S.ONOMA
, S.DIEY
, S.POLH
, S.TK
, S.IDIOT
, S.KODIKOS
, S.AFM
FROM
SYNERG AS S
INNER JOIN
(SELECT
G.AFM, MIN(KODIKOS) AS KODIKOS
FROM SYNERG AS G
WHERE LEN(ISNULL(AFM, '')) != 0
GROUP BY AFM) AS I ON S.KODIKOS = I.KODIKOS
ORDER BY
S.AFM
but when I run the same SQL statement in MS Access 2007 I get an error:
Circular reference caused by 'KODIKOS' in query definition's SELECT list.
Any help would be appreciated.
As explained in the link by HansUp:
The alias of a calculated field cannot be identical to any of the field names used to calculate the field.
This can be rather annoying (esp. if it is a field that is returned by the query), but there is no way around it.
So you need to change the alias, e.g.:
SELECT
S.ONOMA
, S.DIEY
, S.POLH
, S.TK
, S.IDIOT
, S.KODIKOS
, S.AFM
FROM
SYNERG AS S
INNER JOIN
(SELECT
G.AFM, MIN(KODIKOS) AS MinKODIKOS
FROM SYNERG AS G
WHERE LEN(Nz(AFM, '')) <> 0
GROUP BY AFM) AS I ON S.KODIKOS = I.MinKODIKOS
ORDER BY
S.AFM
Note also that an IsNull() function exists in Access, but has a different meaning (it takes one argument and returns a Boolean). The corresponding function is Nz()
And (thanks #HansUp), the unequal operator is <>, not !=. I always use <> in SQL Server too, no need to make things more complicated than necessary. :)
I am running a SQL query in stored procedure which is like following
SELECT
t1.id,t2.Name
FROM
table1 t1 , table2 t2 ,table2 t3,table4 t4
WHERE
t1.id=t3.t4.id
this query gets executed on SQL server 2008 when its compatible with SQL server 2000 but if we turn OFF the compatibility with SQL server 2000 then this Query gives syntax error which is expected.
Can some one help me to understand why this is happeneing ? thanks in advance
Original query:
SELECT
ConfigID , LocationDesc + '-' + LOBTeamDesc LocLOBTeamSource
FROM Config CONFIG , Location_LOBTeam LOCLOB , Location LOC , LOBTeam LOB, System SRC
WHERE CONFIG.LocationLOBTeamID = LOC.LOB.LocationLOBTeamID
AND CONFIG.SourceSystemID = SRC.SystemID
AND LOCLOB.LocationID = LOC.LocationID
AND LOCLOB.LOBTeamID = LOB.LOBTeamID
AND (GETDATE() BETWEEN CONFIG.effectiveDate AND CONFIG.EndDate
OR CONFIG.EndDate IS NULL)
ORDER BY
LOC.LocationCode
I think that original query, with current standard join syntax applied would be this:
SELECT
ConfigID
, LocationDesc + '-' + LOBTeamDesc LocLOBTeamSource
FROM Config CONFIG
INNER JOIN Location_LOBTeam LOCLOB
ON CONFIG.LocationLOBTeamID = LOCLOB.LocationLOBTeamID
INNER JOIN Location LOC
ON LOCLOB.LocationID = LOC.LocationID
INNER JOIN LOBTeam LOB
ON LOCLOB.LOBTeamID = LOB.LOBTeamID
INNER JOIN [System] SRC
ON CONFIG.SourceSystemID = SRC.SystemID
WHERE (GETDATE() BETWEEN CONFIG.effectiveDate AND CONFIG.EndDate
OR CONFIG.EndDate IS NULL)
ORDER BY
LOC.LocationCode
Perhaps this will help.
+EDIT
"System" as a table name, could that be a problem? Suggest you try it as [System]
+EDIT2
The original is given with this: LOC.LOB.LocationLOBTeamID but that appears to be an error as there is an alias LOCLOB
I think below post from msdn answers this issue Compatibility Levels and Stored Procedures
in the above post the point number 3 under section "Differences Between Compatibility Level 80 and Level 90" states "WHEN binding the column references in the ORDER BY list to the columns defined in the SELECT list, column ambiguities are ignored and column prefixes are sometimes ignored. This can cause the result set to return in an unexpected order."
on my database I am using compatibility level 80 i.e 2000 thats why it runs smoothly with the given syntax but when I remove this compatibility and make it to 100 i.e. 2008/R2 script gives syntax error which is expected
