Can VueJS components be passed an expression/function to run? [duplicate] - vue.js

Pass method from parent component to child component in vuejs

First of all, please go easy on me, I'm new to Vue and still trying to understand it but I'm experienced in Angular.
I'm trying to find the Vue equivelant of this code, which uses an Angular-UI component...
<uib-datepicker date-disabled="myController.isDateDisabled(day)"></uib-datepicker>
and in the controller:
vm.isDateDidabled = function(day){
return (day === 7); // Example test for Sundays
};
The component uses a passed expression from your controller using a '&' binding and runs it when it needs to. I haven't seen this done in Vue yet. Can this be done with props?

Absolutely.
Lets take your example - we have a datepicker:
<date-picker></date-picker>
Vue components can recieve props. If we wanted to give the date picker component a "disabled" prop it would look this this:
<date-picker v-bind:disabled="true"></date-picker>
When you use the v-bind directive, the expression inside the quotes is evaluated as javascript, with the assumed context being the component whose template this is.
So if we have a component:
Vue.component('parent', {
methods: {
isDisabled (day) {
return day === 7
}
}
})
You can simply execute that method to get the value for the prop (this will be re-evaluated every time the component renders).
<date-picker v-bind:disabled="isDisabled(5)"></date-picker>

Vue mutate prop correctly

I'm trying to create a simple component whose focus is to display an element in an array, but I'm having issues with Vue's philosophy.
As you may know, if a mutation on a prop is triggered, Vue goes crazy because it doesn't want you to update the value of a prop. You should probably use a store, or emit an event.
The issue is: that since I'm adding functionalities to my codebase (for instance the possibility to start again when I reach the last element of the array), it would be wrong to have an upper component be responsible for this management, as it would be wrong to ask an upper component to change their variable, given that my component is supposed to manage the array, so an emit would be a bad solution.
In the same way, given that I'm making a generic component that can be used multiple times on a page, it would be incorrect to bind it to a store.
EDIT: the reason why the prop needs to be updated is that the component is basically acting as a <select>
Am I missing an obvious way to set this up?
To give an example of my end goal, I'm aiming for a component looking like the one in the picture below, and I think a 2 way bind like in v-model would be more appropriate than having to set an #change just to say to update the value of the passed prop.
If you have a prop the correct way to update the value is with a sync, as in the following example
Parent:
<my-component :title.sync="myTitle"></my-component>
Child:
this.$emit("update:title", this.newValue)
Here is a very good article talking about the sync method.
By the other hand you can alter a Vuex state variable by calling a Vuex mutation when you change the value:
computed: {
title: {
// getter
get() {
return this.$store.state.title
},
// setter
set(newValue) {
this.setTitle(newValue) // Requires mutation import, see the methods section.
// Or without import:
this.$store.commit('setTitle', newValue);
}
}
},
methods: {
...mapMutations("global", ["setTitle"]) // It is important to import the mutation called in the computed section
}
In this StackOverflow question they talk about changing state from computed hook in Vue. I hope it works for you.

Updating the values sent to child component on user click in vuejs

I have two components in mu app.vue and i will send data from app.vue to my first component(filter component) at the time of page load.
Now based on the user actions in the displayed data in the second component i need to pass new vales back to the first component.
There i am using a and a . Consider one of the props i receive in the first component is "nselectedOption" and i do this in data: { return { selectedOption: this.nselectedOption }} to avoid mutation warning.
Now everytime i update the values for this component from second component, i am seeing changes in "nselectedOption" only and not in "selectedOption". Can you explain why is that ?
I need the updated value into a v-model of .
1. If i use "nselectedOption" it is updating the textbox but while editing the value throws error.
2. If i use "selectedOption" it is not updating the values in the textbox itself.
I have even tried using the computed values to return the value, it works but if i try to change values in other options in the filter component the already updated values displays null or nothing.
Please help me. Is this problem can be solved using State Management Concept or do i have to have a separate compoenent other than App.Vue to do all this so that it would act as a parent/child kinda thing or is there anyother way to overcome this.
Try using watcher. If you watch for nselectedOption, everytime it changes, the watcher will fire and bind the changed value to selectedOption.
props: ['nselectedOption'],
data: {
selectedOption
},
watch: {
nselectedOption: function (val) {
this.selectedOption = val
}
}
Also, if the prop you are watching is an object/array, consider using spread operator if you want to make a local copy to avoid mutation.
this.someObj = { ...someProp }

Put a slot in every component in Vue.js

I have a component called vue-select that is a third-party packaged that I installed. I want to put a slot template in every instance of this component.
I mean I want to do something like this:
<v-select>
<span slot="no-options">
<li>sample text</li>
</span>
</v-select>
and I don't want to do this in every v-select that I have in my project.
How can I do this to dry my code ?
thank You :)
The slot is useful when you want to make parts of component's template different. If you always want it to be the same piece of template, then don't make it a slot. Simply add the markup you want into the template of the component.
This is similar to not putting something as an argument of a function if you don't want to be possible to change it.
function spin (element) {
const angle = 360
}
If you want an option to have some common content but still change it sometimes, put the default content in the <slot> tags in the template of the component.
This is similar to adding a default argument in a function:
function spin (element, angle = 360) { }
If you already have a third-party component which has defined slots and their default content, and thus you cannot change them, wrap them in a different component firstly and then use the wrapper component in the rest of the code.
This is similar to adding a new function which calls the previous one, but hard-codes some arguments.
function halfSpin (element) {
spin(element, 180)
}

Pass Function as Property to Vue Component

I am trying to make my Vue Component reusable but there is a part in it which requires to run a function on button click which I have defined in the parent component.
The component's button will always run a parent function and the parameter it passes is always the same (its only other property).
Right now I am passing 2 properties to the component: 1) an object and 2) the parent function reference, which requires the object from 1) as a parameter.
The Child-Component looks like this (stripped unnecessary code):
<button v-on:click="parentMethod(placement)">Analyze</button>
Vue.component('reporting-placement', {
props: ['placement', 'method'],
template: '#reporting-placement',
methods: {
parentMethod: function(placement) {
this.method(placement);
}
}
});
The parent is making use of the child like this:
<reporting-placement v-bind:placement="placement" v-bind:method="analyzePlacement"></reporting-placement>
methods: {
analyzePlacement: function(placement) {
this.active_placement = placement;
},
}
As you can see, the child has only one property, placement, and the callback reference. The placement must be put in as a parameter to the reference function from the parent.
But since the parent defines the parameters, the child shouldn't concern itself with what it needs to pass to the parent function. Instead I would prefer to already pass the parameter along in the parent.
So instead of
<reporting-placement v-bind:placement="placement" v-bind:method="analyzePlacement"></reporting-placement>
I would prefer
<reporting-placement v-bind:placement="placement" v-bind:method="analyzePlacement(placement)"></reporting-placement>
(including appropriate changes in the child).
But passing the parameter along does not work that way.
Is it possible (maybe in other syntax) to 'bind' the variable to the function reference so that it is automatically passed along when the callback is called?
Info: I don't get an error message if I write it down as above but the whole Vue screws up when I pass the parameter along to the component.
Hope the issue is clear :-) Thanks a lot!
By reading your proposal I've found out that you are overusing the props passing.
Your concern that child component should not have any knowledge about the way that the parent component uses the data is completely acceptable.
To achieve this you can use Vue's event broadcasting system instead of passing the method as props.
So your code will become something like this:
Vue.component('reporting-placement', {
props: ['placement', 'method'],
template: '#reporting-placement',
methods: {
parentMethod: function(placement) {
this.$emit('reporting-placement-change', placement)
}
}
});
And you can use it like this:
<reporting-placement v-bind:placement="placement" #reporting-placement-change="analyzePlacement($event)"></reporting-placement>
But if you need the data which is provided by the method from parent it's better to consider using a state management system (which can be a simple EventBus or event the more complex Vuex)
And finally, if you really like/have to pass the method as a prop, You can put it in an object, and pass that object as prop.

Vue2 Custom Directive modifying component call

I am attempting to write a Vue directive that updates the properties of a component before the component is evaluated.
For example, consider the following.
<b-modal v-i18n:title="'i18n.key'">
Hello
</b-modal>
b-modal is a Vue Component and it takes a property called 'title'. I would like to have a custom directive that can set the property title after translating the supplied key.
That is, I would like the above code to get rewritten by the directive to:
<b-modal title="Translated Text">
Hello
</b-modal>
So far I have read the following resources and found no reference on how to do this.
https://css-tricks.com/power-custom-directives-vue/
http://optimizely.github.io/vuejs.org/guide/directives.html
My current attempt looks like this:
Vue.directive('i18n', {
inserted: function (el,binding) {
const i18nKey = binding.value;
const attrName = binding.arg;
el.setAttribute(attrName, i18nKey);
}
})
This attempt sadly falls short. It results in a change to the final DOM element and has no affect on the property being past to the Vue component.
How can I can the above directive be modified to change the properties being past to the b-modal component?
