Oracle round varchar2 column to 2 decimal places - sql

I have a varchar2 column that i need to get an average number from.
So take the following table where val is a column varchar2(20):
val
5
4.654645
3.4534353
I have tried the following:
select ROUND(AVG(TO_NUMBER(val)),2) as n from table
The result i am getting is 1.9110E+13
The result i want is a number rounded to 2 decimal places
Thanks in advance for any help

Perhaps . . .
select CAST(AVG(TO_NUMBER(val)) as decimal(20, 2)) as n
from table;
Why are you storing numbers as strings? That seems like abad design decision.

So the following worked for me:
select ROUND(AVG(CAST((val) as decimal(20, 2))),2) as n from table
Thanks for suggestions

Can I combine like and equal to get data?

I have data like this
1234500010
1234500020
1234500021
12345600010
12345600011
123456700010
123456700020
123456710010
The pattern is
1-data(varian 3-7 digit number) + 2-data(any 3 digit number) + 3-data (any 2 digit number)
I want to create SQL to get 1-data only.
For example I want to get data 12345
I want the result only
1234500010
1234500020
1234500021
If I using "like",
select *
FROM data
where ID like '12345%' `
I will get all the data with 12345, 123456 and 1234567
If I using equal, I will only get one specific data.
Can I combine like and equal together to get result like what I want?
select * FROM data where data = '12345 + any 2-data(3 digit) + any 3-data(2 digit)'
Anyone can help?
Addition : Sorry if I didn't mention the data type and make some miss communication. The data type is in char. #Gordon answers and the others not wrong. It works for number and varchar. but not works for char type. Here I post some pic for char data type. Oracle specification for char data type is a fixed lenght. So if I input less than lenght the remain of it will be change into a space.
Thank you very much. Hope someone can help for this
Since your datatype is CHAR, Gordon's answer is not working for you. CHAR adds trailing spaces for the strings less than maximum limit. You could use TRIM to fix this as shown. But, you should preferably store numbers in the NUMBER type and not CHAR or VARCHAR2, which will create other problems sooner or later.
select *
from data
where trim(ID) like '12345_____';
I think you want:
select *
from data
where ID like '12345_____' -- exactly 5 _
Here is a rextester demonstrating the answer.
You really can't combine equality and LIKE. But you can use a regular expression to do this kind of searching, with the REGEXP_LIKE function:
SELECT *
FROM DATA
WHERE REGEXP_LIKE(ID, '^12345[0-9]{3}[0-9]{2}');
But if I understand correctly, for your 1-data you really want a 3 to 7 digit number:
SELECT *
FROM DATA
WHERE REGEXP_LIKE(ID, '^[0-9]{3,7}[0-9]{3}[0-9]{2}');
Oracle regular expression docs here
SQLFiddle here
Best of luck.
I think this gives you the solution you want,
create table data(ID number(15));
insert into data values(1234500010);
insert into data values(1234500020);
insert into data values(1234500021);
insert into data values(12345600010);
insert into data values(12345600011);
insert into data values(123456700010);
insert into data values(123456700020);
insert into data values(123456710010);
select * from data where ID like '12345_____'
// After 5_ underscore are exactly 5 , any 3 digits from 2-data(3 underscores) and 2 digits from 3-data(2 underscores)
You'll be getting(OUTPUT) :
ID
1234500010
1234500020
1234500021
3 rows returned in 0.00 seconds

How to find values with certain number of decimal places using SQL?

I'm trying to figure out a way, using SQL, to query for values that go out to, say, 5 or more decimal places. In other words, I want to see only results that have 5+ decimal places (e.g. 45.324754) - the numbers before the decimal are irrelevant, however, I still need to see the full number. Is this possible? Any help if appreciated.
Assuming your DBMS supports FLOOR and your datatype conversion model supports this multiplication, you can do this:
SELECT *
FROM Table
WHERE FLOOR(Num*100000)!=Num*100000
This has the advantage of not requiring a conversion to a string datatype.
On SQL Server, you can specify:
SELECT *
FROM Table
WHERE Value <> ROUND(Value,4,1);
For an ANSI method, you can use:
SELECT *
FROM Table
WHERE Value <> CAST(Value*100000.0 AS INT) / 100000.0;
Although this method might cause an overflow if you're working with large numbers.
I imagine most DBMSs have a round function
SELECT *
FROM YourTable
WHERE YourCol <> ROUND(YourCol,4)
This worked for me in SQL Server:
SELECT *
FROM YourTable
WHERE YourValue LIKE '%._____%';
select val
from tablename
where length(substr(val,instr(val, '.')+1)) > 5
This is a way to do it in oracle using substr and instr
You can use below decode statement to identify maximum decimal present in database table
SELECT max(decode(INSTR(val,'.'), 0, 0, LENGTH(SUBSTR(val,INSTR(val,'.')+1)))) max_decimal
FROM tablename A;

SQL: Unable to CAST a query

SELECT CAST ((SUM(r.SalesVolume)/1000) AS decimal(3,3)) FROM RawData r
The above is a part of a query that I am trying to run but returns an error:
Lookup Error - SQL Server Database Error: Arithmetic overflow error converting int to data type numeric.
Not sure what this means.
The result column looks like(Without dividing by 1000 and casting):
Total_Sales_Volume
64146
69814
68259
56318
66585
51158
44365
49855
49553
88998
102739
55713
Tried casting as float but doesnt help.
The Problem is decimal(3,3) --> this means a number with 3 digit, 3 of them behind the decimal point. If you want a number like this 1234567.123 you would have do declare it as decimal(10,3)
Try this:
SELECT CAST ((SUM(r.SalesVolume)/1000.0) AS decimal(6,3)) FROM RawData r
decimal(3,3) means that you allow numbers with 3 digits in total, and 3 of these are behind the comma ... I think you meant decimal(6,3)
EDIT: In addition, you need to to divide by 1000.0, not by 1000.
If you divide by 1000, it is an integer division.
If you divide by 1000.0, then it becomes a decimal division, with commas.
Try following:
SELECT CAST ((SUM(r.SalesVolume)/1000) AS numeric(6,3)) FROM RawData r

Error to use 1.3 in sql query

I am using the following query.
select * from wp_rg_lead_detail where lead_id=5063 and field_number=cast(1.6 as decimal).
but it returns the field number 2 result instead of 1.6
Please let me know how can I do it?
Here:
select * from wp_rg_lead_detail where lead_id=5063 and field_number=cast(1.6 as decimal(2, 1))
You must specify number of digits in your decimal when casting, an number of digits after coma (I set them to 2 digits decimal with 1 after coma). You can easily test such casting by simply writing query:
SELECT Cast( 1.6 as decimal(2,1))
this will produce you effect of your casting. If you don't include (2,1) part, it will be automatically rounded to 2.

Shift the decimal places in SQL table

I have 1500+ rows in my SQL Server 2005 database, in a table. The column is a PK of type float.
The data is like :
130226.1
130226.2
....
130226.9
What I want to do is : convert it to
130226.001
130226.002
Is there an efficient way to do this?
Please advise.
This will do:
Update table1 set column1 = floor(column1) + (Column1 - floor(column1)) / 100
SQL Fiddle
Use something like DECIMAL(13,3) allows 10 digits before the decimal point and 3 digits after the decimal point
