I check out the source code of Cassandra, and I want to run a unit test case in debug mode to understand how it works
Below is my JUnit run configuration set up. The code can compile correctly using ant. And I tried both targets build and build-test.
IntelliJ can pick up the class in the run configuration, but when I run this profile, I got.
Process finished with exit code 1
Class not found: "org.apache.cassandra.tools.SSTableExportTest"
Empty test suite.
What part do I need to change the configuration so that IntelliJ can run this unit test cases?
Since you're trying to debug Cassandra. You can reference https://wiki.apache.org/cassandra/RunningCassandraInIDEA. They have already set up a ant target to generate required configurations.

First, important note: This is a project in which the Selenium/Cucumber test suite is working. It's working locally for the developers, and it's working in the Tekton environment.
Second: I have an identical IntelliJ environment as the developers. And other Selenium/Cucumber projects are running fine on my local machine.
When a try to run a fresh copy of the project in question locally, none of the tests start. And, there is no error message.
Normally, this will be cause by missing Glue parameters in the Run/Debug configuration, since IntelliJ for some reason often is unable to add these automatically. This is not the case here.

Sorry for the language. The tests are all in Norwegian. But I don't think that matters for seeing the problem.
Normally, when there is an actual error regarding the test step - in the case "Gitt jeg er en vanlig søker" - there would be some info to the right of the steps overview. This is now blank, as can be seen. So, the test stes aren't even started.
The run/debug configuration:
e2e.cucumber.felles is the package where the Java file with the first step definition is located. So, that's not the reason.
Any ideas?
Is there a way to execute TestNG.xml in dry run mode so that I can figure out what methods gets qualified for the test run. I am using Eclipse and intend to run the tests via testng.xml. How to configure Run Configurations for this.

I tried to provide -Dtestng.mode.dryrun=true in Run Configurations -> Arguments tab under both Program argument and VM arguments
The run configurations had no effect on the execution. The tests were executed in normal fashion. I expected the configurations would just list test methods in the console
You are going to see all tests with no failures. That what you expect when you run testNg with the argument.
To check the dryrun argument works, make your test to fail. Then run your test with "-Dtestng.mode.dryrun=true". Add the argument in "VM arguments"
Also, check your version of testNG is 6.14 or higher
Using gradle 2.2.1 and com.android.tools.build:gradle:1.5.0
When I run ./gradle build in the console the build fails at step :testDebugUnitTest.
It fails because it tries to run a InstrumentationTestCase that should not happen.
What am I missing here?
This is normal. It's because build depends on other tasks. You can see these tasks by running gradle tasks --all.
For build it will show this: build - Assembles and tests this project. [assemble, check].
The check task is configured like this: check - Runs all checks. [assembleDebug, lint, test]
The test task like this: test - Run unit tests for all variants. [testDebugUnitTest, testReleaseUnitTest]
And that is why you see the testDebugUnitTest show up when you run the build task.
So if you just want to build without testing, you need to run gradle assemble. And if you want to save time and only build the variant you need, you can run gradle assembleDebug, for example.
I'm successfully generating 2 .exec files by Jacoco within "build/jacoco" folder after running a Gradle based build and integration tests.
Gradle command:
"gradle clean build integrationTest"
Once done, it generates the following .exec files under build/jacoco folder.
test.exec
integrationTest.exec
Following is my sonar-project.properties file. When, I run "sonar-runner" from Linux prompt it completes but on SonarQube dashboard for this project, I see Unit test says some 34.5% but integration tests says 0.0%. Both .exec files have valid size. I also did "cat" on the .exec files and piped the output to "strings" command in Linux and saw that integrationTest.exec did hit the Tests functions - I have only 1 .java file.
When I run "gradle clean build integrationTest sonarRunner -Dxxx.xxx=yyy -Dyyy.xx=zzz" i.e. by passing all the sonar variable as mentioned in the sonar-project.properties file using -D option, it works but same result on SonarQube project's dashboard. Project's sonar dashboard has both widgets configured for Unit / Integration Tests and I'm including IT tests for showing Overall coverage. Overall coverage is showing 34.5% (which is Unit test % value). Sonar does see test.exec, integrationTest.exec and also auto generates overall-xxx.exec file as well during this operation.
NOTE: I'm no where - while starting tomcat on a separate putty / linux console -OR within Gradle build script, providing any value or setting JAVA Agent for Jacoco. I'm getting integrationTest.exec file and test.exec file already so not sure if JVM needs to be stopped once IT tests are complete running. I don't think I need those as i have valid file size for .exec files.

Narrowing down the cause: I think it's due to the .exec file for Integration test. To proove it: I passed UT exex file to both reportsPaths in Sonar variables i.e. the following and SonarQube picked both UT/IT test coverage. This prooves that if .exec file for IT tests is good (which I think it's But I need to double check) then Sonar will pick the .exec file and show a valid coverage % instead of 0.0%. Note: the following is just to proove if Sonar is picking the values or not. itReportPath variable should use the .exe file which is generated by Integration tests by Jacoco.

OK Found the issue. I was running integrationTest task in Gradle and was NOT attaching the jacocoagent.jar (as per Jacoco documentation) to the target JVM (Tomcat's instance) scope. Once I did that, I removed jacoco { ... } section from integrationTest task in Gradle (build.gradle or GRADLE_HOME/init.d/some.common.gradle file as this attach jacoco agent to the Java JVM in which Gradle is running). Now, once jacocoagent.jar was attached to Tomcat's JVM (as per the line below which I added in Tomcat's startup.sh script and added the variable to the command which starts Tomcat), then I ran Gradle (integrationTest) task for running IT tests.
PROJ_EXTRA_JVM_OPTS=-javaagent:tomcat/jacocoagent.jar=destfile=build/jacoco/IT/jacocoIT.exec,append=false
Then while Gradle was in progress, tests ran and I got a file (jacocoIT.exec at the given location) with some file size BUT this is not yet the final one. I had to stop the Tomcat session/JVM instance by running Tomcat's stop.sh script. Once Tomcat was stopped, I saw jacocoIT.exec file size increased significantly and this was the valid final jacocoIT.exec file (which I needed for sonarRunner Gradle task OR sonar-runner exectuable to pick and successfully push IT code coverage data to project's sonar dashboard). Once done, I got both UT + IT and it's combined code coverage.

None of the plugins in the reporting section of Maven execute if there is a unit test failure.
I found that I can set maven.test.failure.ignore=true here - http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-247 The problem to this approach is now our hudson builds are successful even if there are unit test failures.
What I would really like to do is set the reporting plugin maven-surefire-report-plugin to run with the build plugins on a phase but I can't get this to work.
Any idea on how to get the Maven reporting plugins to execute if a unit test failure occurs?
Firstly run: mvn test OR mvn install. Then, if the tests fail, please run the following target to generate the reports for the test results executed above: mvn -Dmaven.test.skip=true surefire-report:report

Do you need version 2,1 or can you work with a 2.0 version of Maven?
The error you see with 2.1.2 is because of forkmode settings which you need to perform in the plugin.
set forkmode=never and try it (I susppect there might problem in your useSystemclassloader property).
Otherwise make use of maven-surefire plugin version 2.5 which should definitel work and generate surefire rpeorts even though few test fails.
Please make use of surefire-report:report-only plugin if the reports are already generated after execution.
I had the same issue and it is due to a wrong call to the report plugin.
The correct execution of maven command is: mvn surefire-report:report
This will run the test phase by itself and if it fails it will generate the report anyway.
