When I run react-native link on my RN project, I got below error:
$ react-native link
rnpm-install ERR! ERRPACKAGEJSON No package found. Are you sure it's a React Native project?
Cannot read property '_text' of undefined
I have searched that some people say run react-native upgrade will resolve this issue. I have tried but no lock. My react version is shown as below:
$ react-native --version
react-native-cli: 2.0.1
react-native: 0.39.2
How can I solve this issue?
Follow below steps in order -
npm cache clean or yarn cache clean
rm -rf node_modules
yarn install or npm install
react-native upgrade ( You can choose no in all steps)
react-native link
If you get permission related error use sudo with all commands.
A little late but this may help someone else. My problem was large commented out copies of <manifest> ... </manifest> in android/app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml. Once I removed commented out copies, link worked as expected.
It seems xmldoc had touble parsing the manifest even though the AndroidManifest.xml was valid XML. Calling react-native link uses ../node_modules/react-native/local-cli/core/android/index.js. To debug such issues in future I would start with putting debugging statements in ../node_modules/react-native/local-cli/core/android/index.js and narrow down to the root cause of the issue. Similar logic should work for ios.
For me cleaning the gradle did the trick.
1- Go to the root directory of the project.
2- Run cd android
3- Run gradlew clean
4- Run cd..
and then run the link commands
i had this problem. i fixed it with following way:
1- edit "/android/app/src/debug/AndroidManifest.xml"
2- add package="com.YOUR PACKAGE NAME" inline manifest tag. like:
<manifest package="com.YOUR PACKAGE NAME"
note: replace "YOUR PACKAGE NAME" with your package. you can find it in "/android/app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml"
3- cd android
4- ./gradlew clean
5- cd ../
6- react-native link
try to go android -> src -> main -> AndroidManifest.xml and delete all comments here. After that rerun react-native link, and all is working for me. Good luck!

I have been working with react-native project in another pc and it has been working correctly. Now I cloned project to another device where I have react-native installed since I work with other project and I cannot run it.
When I run react-native run-android I get this error:
Cannot run program "npx": error=2, No such file or directory
I'm using Android Studio 4 on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.6.
I solved the problem by running Android Studio with bellow command on console.
$ open -a "Android Studio.app"
Simple steps you need to go through to make it work with npx
sudo npm uninstall -g react-native-cli
sudo npm i -g npx
npx react-native run-android

Issue was that Facebook is not using anymore react-native-cli as they are using npx.
As stated in Facebook page:
If you previously installed a global react-native-cli package, please remove it as it may cause unexpected issues.
So i had to run sudo npm uninstall -g react-native-cli to remove react-native-cli
They also say that npx is shipped with nodejs but that wasn't my case.
React Native has a built-in command line interface, which you can use to generate a new project. You can access it without installing anything globally using npx, which ships with Node.js.
So I had to install it using sudo npm i -g npx
After installing npx then just need to run npx react-native run-android.
Be aware of npx before react-native run-android
Now you don't have any command react-native now we only have 'npx' and react-native run-android is just a parameter for npx. For ex. to start metro we should run npx react-native start
I had the same issues, so I followed these steps:
Start by installing the latest version of Android Studio (Don't delete the old version, just copy paste that to another directory or in my case I just added the Android Studio 3.2.1 that I had to a folder called olderAndroidStudio, on mac).
Make sure you don't click on import settings from Existing.
Follow along the installation, and complete it.
Build and Run, app runs without any problems.
I additionally uninstalled react-native-cli using the method given in the accepted answer.
In my case, I just quit Android Studio and reopened, and the error was gone.
Maybe throw in a ./gradlew clean for goo measure.
I solved it by finding the command that was throwing error and ran it directly
node -e "console.log(require('react-native/cli').bin)"
which outputs a path, something like
$HOME/my-app/node_modules/#react-native-community/cli/build/bin.js
then I pasted that path in android/app/build.gradle

When I try to use 'react-native-elements' package in my code, I face this error :
bundling failed: Error: Unable to resolve module react-native-vector-icons/FontAwesome from node_modules\react-native-elements\src\social\SocialIcon.js: react-native-vector-icons/FontAwesome could not be found within the project.
I have done many things to fix it. I installed the 'react-native-vector-icons' again, I used 'rm ./node_modules/react-native/local-cli/core/fixtures/files/package.json' but non of them worked. what should I do to overcome this problem? I really appreciate your help guys.
make sure that you've installed the package with
npm install react-native-vector-icons and link it through
react-native link react-native-vector-icons
then for ios you need to install pod (goto your project ios folder on terminal and enter command pod install)
and then reset packager cache with react-native start --reset-cache
if you are using react version <0.60 use react-native link react-native-vector-icons and do the steps link and if react version > 0.60 then cd ios && pod install && cd .. and try again if its not work delete the build folder and rebuild again.
So I'm opening my the existing React Native project. This is the procedure on how I opened my existing React Native project. 1st step, type the location of my project which is in the "D:\rnprojects\firstproject\". 2nd step, "react-native-start". 3rd step, I opened another cmd then locate it again into my project directory then typed "npm start".
Why when I created this project I didn't get this error just when runnning/opening my existing project.

There is only simple steps can solve your particular scenario issue quickly.
1) Install the React native cli in your project or globally.
npm install -g react-native-cli
OR
npm install react-native --save
then start your project by using this command
npm start
If any dependencies issue please follow the second solution
2) Please make sure you're installed all dependence
yarn install
OR
npm install
under your project directory

it is simple:
1.npm install
2.react-native run-android
Here I guess you have the RN environment to run already on your side.
cd path_to_project
install packages(there are two following ways to install packages).
2.1 yarn install
2.2 npm install
react-native link(optional - you need to run this command if existing project use RN packages which need to link such as
react-native-vector-icons)
optional(if project use pods) cd ios pod install
react-native run-ios or react-native run-android according to the platform which you want to run on.
I don't think above is perfect instruction give you how to run the existing react-native project, But I am pleasure if give me some hints or help to you.

Sometimes npm's cache gets confused and need to reset it by using below command:
npm cache clean --force
Also try below command:
npm install --save-dev react-native-cli

I'm getting an error while I'm doing react-native run-android
error:
Command `start` unrecognized. Make sure that you have run `npm install` and that you are inside a react-native project.
Inside your root directory where package.json is placed along with other directories like android/ios, run the command npm install. Then run
react-native link (not compulsorily required, required in case there are third party libraries to be linked). Then run react-native run-android (supposing you don't have sdk path problem and you have an emulator running).
This is the most common way of starting a git project. Let me know if you face other problems.
Every time I try to react-native link a new library, I get the same error message. Here it is for react-native-video.

The actual location of my MainApplication.java file is
./android/app/src/main/java/com/appName/MainApplication.java
The difference is that React Native Link is including "company name" in the path, which doesn't match my project.
How can I fix this?
I looked over some topic and found solution, you can try with:
npm install --save-dev babel-plugin-module-resolver
and then add your npm install package & react-native link again.

I'm pretty late to the party on this, but for future reference;
TLDR: Adding another folder like so java/com/companyName/AppName/ will fix your issue.
After updating to the latest react-native I had this issue too. Your android path contains your apps ID so com.test.app path should be android/app/src/main/java/com/test/app.
Looking at your error message, its actually telling you where it's expecting the file to be;
Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '/Users/Me/Projects/myProject/android/app/src/main/java/com/companyName/appName/MainApplication.java'
If you create another folder like so java/com/companyName/AppName/ you will be able to automatically link plugins.
Another way I tried and it works for me:
rm -rf node_modules && npm install
Then retry install your package:
ex:
npm install react-native-image-picker#latest --save
Then react-native link your package
react-native link react-native-image-picker
There are only two options that i am aware of to solve this problem
close all the terminals to stop the node server running on a difference terminal.
If you still have the mistake after that then try the following option
You might still have the error because you uninstall and re-install react-native without paying attention to the version that you installed which for most case will be the latest version. So double check the current version of your react-native when installing it. "\n"

in your package.json you add "react-native": "^0.60.5" if the version is 0.60.5 replace "^0.60.5" by the version you are trying to run, in devDepencies and run npm install
or
run npm install react-native#0.60.5 or npm install react-native#version
