I have 3 combo boxes on a form. The first is populated when the form loads, the second is populated when the user picks a value from the first combo box, and the third is populated when the user picks a value from the second.
When the third combo box is changed, I am using a nested If statement to determine what row this combination lies in (so I can populate textboxes on the form). However, the first If Statement is failing to trigger (i.e. return a 'true' value). There is an acceptable value in the cell, so it should progress to the next If statement, but it just jumps to the end of my While statement.
Private Sub cmb_State_Change()
Dim Project, licence, state As String
Dim selectedrow As Integer
Dim LastRow As Integer
Dim i, j As Integer
selededrow = 0
Project = cmb_Project.Value
licence = cmb_Licence.Value
state = cmb_State.Value
i = 1
j = 3
While selectedrow = 0
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(i, j) = Project Then
i = i + 6
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(i, j) = licence Then
i = i - 1
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(i, j) = state Then
selectedrow = j
End If
End If
Else
j = j + 1
i = i - 5
End If
Wend
End Sub
Can anybody see why it would be behaving like this?
Cells takes its arguments as rows then columns so you need to reverse i and j in your code. When you do Range("C4") it is columns then rows i.e. column C, row 4 - but Cells is the other way around.
So, currently you have
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(i, j) = Project Then
i = i + 6
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(i, j) = licence Then
i = i - 1
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(i, j) = state Then
selectedrow = j
Which is making your second lookup 6 rows down - not 6 columns across.
Rewrite those as:
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(j, i) = Project Then
i = i + 6
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(j, i) = licence Then
i = i - 1
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(j, i) = state Then
selectedrow = j
Another option
You can just rewrite the code block as this:
r = 3
While selectedrow = 0
If Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(r, 1) = Project And _
Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(r, 7) = licence And _
Worksheets("Entitlements").Cells(r, 6) = State Then
selectedrow = r
Else
r = r + 1
End If
Wend
An even better option
Using the While..Wend loop means the code will run to the last row (over million rows) in the sheet if there is no match. You can use a standard bit of code to find the last row in your data:
Set ws = Worksheets("Entitlements")
LastRow = ws.Cells(ws.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
Then use a For..Next loop over that range. For example:
Option Explicit
Private Sub cmb_State_Change()
Dim Project As String, licence As String, state As String
Dim selectedrow As Integer
Dim LastRow As Integer
Dim r As Integer
Dim ws As Worksheet
selectedrow = 0
Project = "hello" 'cmb_Project.Value
licence = "world" 'cmb_Licence.Value
state = "stuff" 'cmb_State.Value
Set ws = Worksheets("Entitlements")
LastRow = ws.Cells(ws.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
For r = 3 To LastRow
If ws.Cells(r, 1) = Project And _
ws.Cells(r, 7) = licence And _
ws.Cells(r, 6) = state Then
selectedrow = r
Exit For
Next r
End Sub
Note the use of Option Explicit to catch any typos in your code. In your original question you had Dim selectedrow As Integer and selededrow = 0 which would have thrown a compile time error if you were using `Option Explicit'.

An analyst observed that the upward movement of stocks on Bovespa is repeated according to a mathematical sequence. He wants to find out what the next bullish sequences will be. Generate and save in Excel cells using macro the sequence 1, 3, 4, 7, 11, 18, 29, ... up to its twentieth term?
following my code in vba:
Sub GerarSequencia()
Dim num As Long
Dim previous As Long
Dim i As Integer
num = 0
previous = 0
For i = 1 To 20
If i = 1 Then
num = 1
Else
num = num + previous
End If
Cells(i, 1).Value = num
previous = num
Next i
End Sub
I tried to generate the sequence of the exercise but did it generate another one?
The sequence is a sommation of the earlier two values. So 1 + 3 = 4 and so on. Before you can start the sqequence you have to have two numbers. I think you can work with:
Sub GerarSequencia()
Dim intFirstNum, intSecondNum As Integer
Dim intCounter As Integer
intFirstNum = 1
intSecondNum = 3
Cells(1, 1) = intFirstNum
Cells(2, 1) = intSecondNum
For intCounter = 3 To 20
Cells(intCounter, 1).Value = Cells(intCounter - 2, 1).Value + Cells(intCounter - 1, 1).Value
Next intCounter
End Sub
So you see that I have made two additional variables which are filled with 1 and 3 (if you change them you can start wherever you want). From that point on, I start the loop from position 3. This is because the first two are already known.
From that point on you can run the sequence. You don't need an if statement in that case.
Generating a Sequence
Sub GerarSequencia()
Const nCOUNT As Long = 20
Dim nPrev As Long: nPrev = 1
Dim nCurr As Long: nCurr = 3
Cells(1, 1).Value = nPrev
Cells(2, 1).Value = nCurr
Dim nNext As Long
Dim i As Long
For i = 3 To nCOUNT
nNext = nPrev + nCurr ' sum up
Cells(i, 1).Value = nNext ' write
nPrev = nCurr ' swap
nCurr = nNext ' swap
Next i
' ' Return the worksheet results in the Immediate window (Ctrl + G).
' For i = 1 To 20
' Debug.Print Cells(i, 1).Value
' Next i
End Sub
I am trying to make an auto scheduling program with an excel.
For example, each number is certain job assigned to the person given day.
1/2 1/3 1/4 1/5
Tom 1 2 2 ?
Justin 2 3 1 ?
Mary 3 3 ?
Sam 1 ?
Check O O X ? ## check is like =if(b2=c2,"O","X")
The things I want to make sure is every person is given a different job from yesterday.
My idea
while
randomly distribute jobs for 1/5
wend CheckCell = "O"
But I found that checking cell in the vba script doesn't work - the cell is not updated in each while loop.
Could you give me a little pointer for these kinds of program? Because I am new to vbaScript, any kinds of help would be appreciated.
Using VBA, I'm sure there are better ways to do this, but this will check the values from the penultimate column against values from last column and if they match it will write "O" to under the last column, else it will write "X":
Sub foo()
Dim ws As Worksheet: Set ws = Sheets("Sheet1")
'declare and set your worksheet, amend as required
LastRow = ws.Cells(ws.Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row
'get the last row with data on Column A
LastCol = ws.Cells(1, ws.Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).Column
counter = 0 'set counter
For i = 2 To LastRow 'loop through penultimate column and add values to array
If ws.Cells(i, LastCol - 1).Value <> "" Then
Values = Values & ws.Cells(i, LastCol - 1) & ","
End If
Next i
Values = Left(Values, Len(Values) - 1)
Values = Split(Values, ",") 'split values into array
For i = 2 To LastRow 'loop through last column and add values to array
If ws.Cells(i, LastCol).Value <> "" Then
ValuesCheck = ValuesCheck & ws.Cells(i, LastCol) & ","
End If
Next i
ValuesCheck = Left(ValuesCheck, Len(ValuesCheck) - 1)
ValuesCheck = Split(ValuesCheck, ",")
For y = LBound(Values) To UBound(Values) 'loop through both arrays to find all values match
For x = LBound(ValuesCheck) To UBound(ValuesCheck)
If Values(y) = ValuesCheck(x) Then counter = counter + 1
Next x
Next y
If counter = UBound(Values) + 1 Then 'if values match
ws.Cells(LastRow + 1, LastCol).Value = "O"
Else 'else write X
ws.Cells(LastRow + 1, LastCol).Value = "X"
End If
End Sub
just to clarify are you looking to implement the random number in the vba or the check.
To do the check the best way would be to set the area as a range and then check each using the cells(r,c) code, like below
Sub checker()
Dim rng As Range
Dim r As Integer, c As Integer
Set rng = Selection
For r = 1 To rng.Rows.Count
For c = 1 To rng.Columns.Count
If rng.Cells(r, c) = rng.Cells(r, c + 1) Then
rng.Cells(r, c).Interior.Color = RGB(255, 0, 0)
End If
Next c
Next r
End Sub
this macro with check the text you have selected for the issue and change the cell red if it matches the value to the right.
To make it work for you change set rng = selection to your range and change the rng.Cells(r, c).Interior.Color = RGB(255, 0, 0) to the action you want
A sligthly different approach than the other answers.
Add this function:
Function PickJob(AvailableJobs As String, AvoidJob As String)
Dim MaxTries As Integer
Dim RandomJob As String
Dim Jobs() As String
Jobs = Split(AvailableJobs, ",")
MaxTries = 100
Do
MaxTries = MaxTries - 1
If MaxTries = 0 Then
MsgBox "Could find fitting job"
End
End If
RandomJob = Jobs(Int((1 + UBound(Jobs)) * Rnd()))
Loop Until RandomJob <> AvoidJob
PickJob = RandomJob
End Function
And put this formula in your sheet
=PickJob("1,2,3",D2)
where D2 points to is the previous job
I have been working on a macro that Archives: it selects rows with the right cell value and move them to another tab (while deleting the rows in the tab of origin).
My macro was working perfectly fine, but I decided to change my file and have different new tabs. When I computed my Macro in my new tabs, and it works on the right rows, and deletes them, but does not copy them in my "Archive tab" :
Sub Archive_Ongoing()
Test 2 : works for 2 arguments.
Dim xRg As Range
Dim xCell As Range
Dim I As Long
Dim J As Long
Dim K As Long
I = Worksheets("B90_Projects_OnGoing").UsedRange.Rows.Count
J = Worksheets("B90_Projects_Archived").UsedRange.Rows.Count
If J = 1 Then
If Application.WorksheetFunction.CountA(Worksheets("B90_Projects_Archived").UsedRange) = 0 Then J = 0
End If
Set xRg = Worksheets("B90_Projects_OnGoing").Range("O1:O" & I)
Set yRg = Worksheets("B90_Projects_OnGoing").Range("T1:T" & I)
On Error Resume Next
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
For K = 1 To xRg.Count
If CStr(xRg(K).Value) = "Closed" And CStr(yRg(K).Value) <> "" Then
xRg(K).Selection.Copy Destination:=Worksheets("B90_Projects_Archived").Range("A" & J + 1)
xRg(K).EntireRow.Delete
If CStr(xRg(K).Value) = "Closed" Then
K = K - 1
End If
J = J + 1
End If
Next
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub'
Any one would be able to explain why?
Because you're decrementing your K variable within the FOR loop, which is also incrementing it. Your K variable never changes. Comment out K = K - 1 and report back?
If you're doing that on purpose to evaluate / delete a single line and shift the next values up then you might want to have a K2 variable that you increment like this:
For K = 1 To xRg.Count
If CStr(xRg(K - K2).Value) = "Closed" And CStr(yRg(K - K2).Value) <> "" Then
xRg(K - K2).Selection.Copy Destination:=Worksheets("B90_Projects_Archived").Range("A" & J + 1)
xRg(K - K2).EntireRow.Delete
If CStr(xRg(K - K2).Value) = "Closed" Then
K2 = K2 + 1
End If
J = J + 1
End If
Next
I have an Excel Worksheet consisting of two columns, one of which is filled with strings and the other is emtpy. I would like to use VBA to assign the value of the cells in the empty column based on the value of the adjacent string in the other column.
I have the following code:
Dim regexAdmin As Object
Set regexAdmin = CreateObject("VBScript.RegExp")
regexAdmin.IgnoreCase = True
regexAdmin.Pattern = "Admin"
Dim i As Integer
For i = 1 To 10 'let's say there is 10 rows
Dim j As Integer
For j = 1 To 2
If regexAdmin.test(Cells(i, j).Value) Then
Cells(i, j + 1).Value = "Exploitation"
End If
Next j
Next i
The problem is that when using this loop for a big amount of data, it takes way too long to work and, most of the time, it simply crashes Excel.
Anyone knows a better way to this?
You have an unnecessary loop, where you test the just completed column (j) too. Dropping that should improve the speed by 10-50%
Dim regexAdmin As Object
Set regexAdmin = CreateObject("VBScript.RegExp")
regexAdmin.IgnoreCase = True
regexAdmin.Pattern = "Admin"
Dim i As Integer
For i = 1 To 10 'let's say there is 10 rows
If regexAdmin.test(Cells(i, 1).Value) Then
Cells(i, 1).offset(0,1).Value = "Exploitation"
End If
Next i
If the regex pattern really is simply "Admin", then you could also just use a worksheet formula for this, instead of writing a macro. The formula, which you'd place next to the text column (assuming your string/num col is A) would be:
=IF(NOT(ISERR(FIND("Admin",A1))),"Exploitation","")
In general, if it can be done with a formula, then you'd be better off doing it so. it's easier to maintain.
Try this:
Public Sub ProcessUsers()
Dim regexAdmin As Object
Set regexAdmin = CreateObject("VBScript.RegExp")
regexAdmin.IgnoreCase = True
regexAdmin.Pattern = "Admin"
Dim r As Range, N As Integer, i As Integer
Set r = Range("A1") '1st row is headers
N = CountRows(r) - 1 'Count data rows
Dim inputs() As Variant, outputs() As Variant
inputs = r.Offset(1, 0).Resize(N, 1) ' Get all rows and 1 columns
ReDim outputs(1 To N, 1 To 1)
For i = 1 To N
If regexAdmin.test(inputs(i, 1)) Then
outputs(i, 1) = "Exploitation"
End If
Next i
'Output values
r.Offset(1, 1).Resize(N, 1).Value = outputs
End Sub
Public Function CountRows(ByRef r As Range) As Long
If IsEmpty(r) Then
CountRows = 0
ElseIf IsEmpty(r.Offset(1, 0)) Then
CountRows = 1
Else
CountRows = r.Worksheet.Range(r, r.End(xlDown)).Rows.Count
End If
End Function
I am receiving a large file 500k+ lines but all the content is in column A. I need to run a macro that will transpose the data into matrix form but will only create a new row when it finds "KEY*" in the ActiveCell. For example:
| KEY 4759839 | asljhk | 35049 | | sklahksdjf|
| KEY 359 | skj | 487 |y| 2985789 |
The above data in my file would originally look like this in column A:
KEY 4759839
asljhk
35049
sklahksdjf
KEY 359
skj
487
y
2985789
Considerations:
Blank cells need to be transposed as well, so the macro cant stop based on emptyCell
The number of cells between KEY's is not constant so it actually needs to read the cell to know if it should create a new row
It can either stop based on say 20 empty cells in a row or prompt for a max row number
(Optional) It would be nice if there was some sort of visual indicator for the last item in a row so that its possible to tell if the last item(s) were blank cells
I searched around and found a macro that had the same general theme but it went based on every 6 lines and I did not know enough to try to modify it for my case. But in case it helps here it is:
Sub kTest()
Dim a, w(), i As Long, j As Long, c As Integer
a = Range([a1], [a500000].End(xlUp))
ReDim w(1 To UBound(a, 1), 1 To 6)
j = 1
For i = 1 To UBound(a, 1)
c = 1 + (i - 1) Mod 6: w(j, c) = a(i, 1)
If c = 6 Then j = j + 1
Next i
[c1].Resize(j, 6) = w
End Sub
I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me!
This works with the sample data you provided in your question - it outputs the result in a table starting in B1. It runs in less than one second for 500k rows on my machine.
Sub kTest()
Dim originalData As Variant
Dim result As Variant
Dim i As Long
Dim j As Long
Dim k As Long
Dim countKeys As Long
Dim countColumns As Long
Dim maxColumns As Long
originalData = Range([a1], [a500000].End(xlUp))
countKeys = 0
maxColumns = 0
'Calculate the number of lines and columns that will be required
For i = LBound(originalData, 1) To UBound(originalData, 1)
If Left(originalData(i, 1), 3) = "KEY" Then
countKeys = countKeys + 1
maxColumns = IIf(countColumns > maxColumns, countColumns, maxColumns)
countColumns = 1
Else
countColumns = countColumns + 1
End If
Next i
'Create the resulting array
ReDim result(1 To countKeys, 1 To maxColumns) As Variant
j = 0
k = 1
For i = LBound(originalData, 1) To UBound(originalData, 1)
If Left(originalData(i, 1), 3) = "KEY" Then
j = j + 1
k = 1
Else
k = k + 1
End If
result(j, k) = originalData(i, 1)
Next i
With ActiveSheet
.Cells(1, 2).Resize(UBound(result, 1), UBound(result, 2)) = result
End With
End Sub
Tested and works:
Sub test()
Row = 0
col = 1
'Find the last not empty cell by selecting the bottom cell and moving up
Max = Range("A650000").End(xlUp).Row 'Or whatever the last allowed row number is
'loop through the data
For i = 1 To Max
'Check if the left 3 characters of the cell are "KEY" and start a new row if they are
If (Left(Range("A" & i).Value, 3) = "KEY") Then
Row = Row + 1
col = 1
End If
Cells(Row, col).Value = Range("A" & i).Value
If (i > Row) Then
Range("A" & i).Value = ""
End If
col = col + 1
Next i
End Sub
