Can you concatenate two strings to create dynamic column names in PostgreSQL? - sql

I have a form where people can type in a start and end date, as well as a column name prefix.
In the backend, I want to do something along the lines of
SELECT *, CAST('{{startDate}}' AS TIMESTAMP) AS ({{prefix}} + '_startDate')
Is this possible? Basically, I want to dynamically create the name of the new column. The table is immediately returned to the user, so I don't want to mutate the underlying table itself. Thanks!

You can execute dynamic query that you have prepared by using EXECUTE keyword, otherwise it is not possible to have dynamic structure of SQL.
Since you are preparing your SQL outside database, you can use something like:
SELECT *, CAST('{{startDate}}' AS TIMESTAMP) AS {{prefix}}_startDate
Assuming that {{prefix}} is replaced with some string by your template before it is sent to database.

Custom column in Custom SQL on BigQuery

I'm stacking on some issue on Tableau when I'm trying to run Custom query with string parameter. I'd like to query one column dynamically from certain table on BigQuery.
My SQL looks like.:
select <Parameters.column for research> as column,
count(*) as N
from table_name
where date=<Parameters.date>
group by 1
Here I'm trying to use parameter as column name.
But unfortunatlly I'm receive string column with one value of the parameter.
Is it possible to execute my request? If it's doable, so how to write the Custom SQL?

BigQuery CREATE TABLE with dynamic table name [duplicate]

I am trying to write a BigQuery script that I can store as a procedure, I would like one of the arguments I pass to be used in the table name that is written out by the script, for example:
DECLARE id STRING;
SET id = '123';
CREATE OR REPLACE TABLE test.id AS(
SELECT * FROM dataset.table
)
However, in this example the table is created with the name id rather than the value of the "id" variable, 123. Is there any way I can dynamically create a table using the value of a declared variable in the BigQuery UI?
Why not just use Execute Immediate with concat if you know the table schema?
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE CONCAT('CREATE TABLE `', id, '` (column_name STRING)');
So far we have officially announced BigQuery scripting document, which is still in Beta phase, leveraging usage of dynamic parameters (variables) as a placeholders for values in SQL queries . However, according to Parameterized queries in BigQuery documentation, query parameters can't be used for SQL object identifiers:
Parameters cannot be used as substitutes for identifiers, column
names, table names, or other parts of the query.
Maybe you can use a wildcard table. You would create a wildcard table with all subtables you want to query and use the WHERE clause to select any subtable you want. Just be careful, the tables must have the same schema.

T-SQL: Exclude Columns from a SELECT statement based on string

My overall goal is to create new tables by selecting columns in existing tables with certain patterns/tags in their column names. This is in SQL Server.
For example, I have a common need to get all contact information out of a company table, and into its own contact table.
I haven't been able to find a programmatic approach in SQL to express excluding columns from a SELECT statement based on string.
When looking to options like the COL_NAME function, those require an ID arg, which kills that option for me.
Wishing there was something built in that could work like the following:
SELECT *
FROM TABLE
WHERE COL_NAME() LIKE 'FLAG%'
Any ideas? Open to anything! Thanks!!
One trick could be to firstly using the following code to get the column names you desire:
select * from information_schema.columns
where table_name='tbl' and column_name like 'FLAG%'
Then concatenate them into a comma-delimited string and finally create a dynamic sql query using the created string as the column names.

SqlQuery and SqlFieldsQuery

it looks that SqlQuery only supports sql that starts with select *? Doesn't it support other sql that only select some columns like
select id, name from person and maps the columns to the corresponding POJO?
If I use SqlFieldQuery to run sql, the result is a QueryCursor of List(each List contains one record of the result). But if the sql starts with select *, the this list's contents would be different with field query like:
select id,name,age from person
For the select *, each List is constructed with 3 parts:
the first elment is the key of the cache
the second element is the pojo object that contains the data
the tailing element are the values for each column.
Why was it so designed? If I don't know what the sql that SqlFieldsQuery runs , then I need additional effort to figure out what the List contains.
SqlQuery returns key and value objects, while SqlFieldsQuery allows to select specific fields. Which one to use depends on your use case.
Currently select * indeed includes predefined _key and _val fields, and this will be improved in the future. However, generally it's a good practice to list fields you want to fetch when running SQL queries (this is true for any SQL database, not only Ignite). This way your code will be protected from unexpected behavior in case schema is changed, for example.
