I have installed Azure Data Studio and the extension SQL Agent. I have also installed the Admin package extension as it seems to be under that.
It does not appear when i click on Manage for the connected database.
How can i get it to appear ?
I installed Azure data studio and sql server agent in Azure data studio using extension menu.
Image for reference:
After connection of Sql Server without clicking manage automatically Sql agent is appear in my case.
Image for reference:
If the Login account connecting to Azure data studio is not a part of SysAdmin role in SQL Server, then SQL Server Agent would not be visible to check this run below query in Azure data studio
Select IS_SRVROLEMEMBER('Sysadmin')
If a value is zero, then you are not a Sysadmin and hence you can’t see SQL Server Agent.
I run the above query I got as
Another possible reason would be that SQL Server in not an edition which supports SQL Server Agent. Typically, SQL Server Express edition could be another cause.
To verify, you can run below query in Azure data studio
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('Edition')
I run above query in my system I got as
If the output is “Express” or “Express Edition with Advanced Services”, then you would not see SQL Server Agent node in Azure data studio.
Kindly check above properties of your sql server.
I have downloaded and installed SQL Server 2014 Express
(from this site: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/sql-server-editions/sql-server-express.aspx#Installation_Options).
The problem is that I can't connect/find my local DB server, and I can't develop DB on my local PC. How can I reach my local server?
My system consists of Windows 8.1 (no Pro or Enterprise editions) 64 bits
Checking the configuration of SQL Server with SQL Server 2014 Configuration Manager tool, I see an empty list selecting "SQL Server Services" from the tree at the left. Below you can find a screenshot.
In the Windows Services list, there is just only one service: "SQL Server VSS Writer"
EDIT
My installation window of SQL Server 2014 is the following:
Most probably, you didn't install any SQL Server Engine service. If no SQL Server engine is installed, no service will appear in the SQL Server Configuration Manager tool. Consider that the packages SQLManagementStudio_Architecture_Language.exe and SQLEXPR_Architecture_Language.exe, available in the Microsoft site contain, respectively only the Management Studio GUI Tools and the SQL Server engine.
If you want to have a full featured SQL Server installation, with the database engine and Management Studio, download the installer file of SQL Server with Advanced Services.
Moreover, to have a sample database in order to perform some local tests, use the Adventure Works database.
Considering the package of SQL Server with Advanced Services, at the beginning at the installation you should see something like this (the screenshot below is about SQL Server 2008 Express, but the feature selection is very similar). The checkbox next to "Database Engine Services" must be checked. In the next steps, you will be able to configure the instance settings and other options.
Execute again the installation process and select the database engine services in the feature selection step. At the end of the installation, you should be able to see the SQL Server services in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
I downloaded a different installer "SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services" and found Instance Features in it. Thanks for Alberto Solano's answer, it was really helpful.
My first installer was "SQL Server 2014 Express". It installed only SQL Management Studio and tools without Instance features. After installation "SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services" my LocalDB is now alive!!!
I have noticed that after installation of SQL server 2012 express on Windows 10 you must install ENU\x64\SqlLocalDB.MSI from official Microsoft download site. After that, you could run SqlLocalDB.exe.
Just download and install LocalDB 64BIT\SqlLocalDB.msi can also solve this problem. You don't really need to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services.
Also, if you just installed localDB, you won't see the instance in the configuration manager. You would need to initiate it first, and then connect to it using server name (localdb)\mssqllocaldb.

I faced the same issue. Just download and install the SQL Server suite from the following link :http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=42299
restart your SSMS and you should be able to "Register Local Servers" via right-click on "Local Servers Groups", select "tasks", click "register local servers"
I cannot start SSIS in SQL Server 2008. Here is a screenshot of SQL Server installer. Where should I begin to enable/install Integration Services in SQL Server 2008?
Here are the screenshots of installation steps taken using SQL Server 2008 R2 installer. The steps listed below should give you an idea to install necessary components of SQL Server 2008.
On the SQL Server installation media, right-click on Setup.exe and select Run as administrator.
On SQL Server Installation Center, click Installation and then click New installation or add features to an existing installation.
Click OK on Setup Support Rules step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup. If there are warnings or failures on Setup Support Rules, take necessary actions to fix them.
Click Install on Setup Support Files step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup.
Click Next > on Setup Support Rules step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup. If there are warnings or failures on Setup Support Rules, take necessary actions to fix them.
On the Installation Type step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup, select either New installation or add shared features or select Add features to an existing instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 and pick an appropriate instance name. Click Next >
Enter the product key on Product Key step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup and click Next >
Check I accept license terms, if you choose to accept the terms and conditions and click Next > on License Terms step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup.
Select SQL Server Feature Installation on Setup Role step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup, click Next >
On Feature Selection step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup, you need to decide what you would like to install.
If you need only the Business Intelligence Development Studio for SSIS packages development, then install only the Business Intelligence Development Studio.
If you need the Integration Services to deploy and run the SSIS packages, choose Integration Services. NOTE: I would recommend reading Licensing requirements on MSDN or Microsoft website before you choose this option.
Below screenshot shows BIDS installation for SSIS packages development and other client only components.
Read the details and click Next > on Installation Rules step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup.
Read the details and clickNext > on Disk Space Requirements step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup.
Read the details and click Next > on Error Reporting step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup.
Click Next > on Installation Configuration Rules step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup. If there are warnings or failures on Installation Configuration Rules, take necessary actions to fix them.
Verify the components and click Install on Ready to Install step of SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup.
Once the install is complete, the status wizard will appear. Click Close if everything is successful else take necessary action if the install fails.
Hope that helps.
I use Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional (I installed all components).
Here is what I'm trying to do. I create a new ASP.NET project. Then I open Server Explorer (View->Server Explorer), right click on Data Connections and choose Add Connection. Then I choose Microsoft SQL Server and press Continue, but the 'Server name' list is empty.
I launch Sql Server Configuration Manager and it shows that SQL Server is in running state (Agent and Browser are stopped)
Why there is no any Sql Server in Add Connection list?
--------------------------------------------------------------
I allow remote filestream for SQl Server, so no I can choose server in the list, but when I enter new database name and click Ok I get a error "sql server was not found or was not accessible"
--------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a list of installed programs with 'SQL' filter
Have you configured SQL Server to allow remote connections? By default, SQL Server Express Edition and SQL Server Developer Edition do not allow remote connections.
For SQL Server 2005:
How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remote connections
For SQL Server 2008:
From start menu of SQL Server 2008, run SQL Server Configuration Manager.
From left side view of SQL Server Configuration Manager, expand SQL Server Network Configuration.
In the right view, you will see the list of SQL Server protocols. By default only Shared Memory is enabled. Enable the other protocols to get your SQL server to accept connections over the network.
Your problem appears to be that you have more than one SQL Server instance installed locally. You will need to use the fully qualified name.
I am getting following error.
Restore failed for Server
I have recently upgraded SQL Server 2005 Express to SQL Server 2008 Express.
I have taken a Backup on Production Server, having SQL Server 2008
Backup was good and I tried restoring Backup on Production Server, that works great.
Than I downloaded that backup file in .Zip format with FileZila Software (And that is good too).
But when I tried to restore that file I am getting following error.
Restore failed for Server
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)
------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241)

Things I tried which didn't worked
Attempt 1
Try to take backup using following command
BACKUP DATABASE go4sharepoint_1384_8481
TO DISK='C:\HostingSpaces\dbname_jun14_2010_new.bak' with FORMAT
And tried restore that file.
Attempt 2
Somebody wrote to test Version of my SQL Server.
When I tried to run following command in SQL Server 2008
Select ##Version
It is giving following output
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.4053.00 (Intel X86) May 26 2009 14:24:20 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2)
My Production Database is in SQL Server 2008, and I am trying to restore DB in SQL Server 2008 but above version is showing as if i am using SQL Server 2005.
Any idea how can I restore SQL Server 2008 DB.
Many Thanks.
Is it possible that, instead of upgrading your 2005 instance to 2008, you instead installed 2008 side-by-side with 2005, and you're connecting to your existing 2005 instance? Look for other instances on your machine.
You cannot restore a backup from a higher SQL Server version on a lower version - this has never been able in SQL Server.
If you have a SQL Server 2008 backup, you can only restore that on a SQL Server 2008 (or later) machine - but not on a 2005 box. No trick, no workaround, no way to do it.
You have 2 options here.
Use WITH REPLACE while using the RESTORE command. This will overwrite the existing database and restore the database state represented by the backup files.
Delete the database to which you are trying to restore to and restore again using RESTORE command. This will create a new database with the state represented by the backup files.
Please note that in both these options you will lose the existing data of the database you are trying to restore to.
Make sure it is installed correctly - in your program files\microsoft sql server directory there whould be a 100/150 folder. Check out the install log in setup bootstrap\log.
As described above the reason for this behaviour is that by default SQL Server doesn't allow restoring a database backup to an older version of SQL Server, regardless of the compatibility level of the database the backup was taken from.
You can try to:
Start SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the instance where the database resides
In the database context menu navigate to Tasks | Generate Scripts…. This will invoke the Generate and Publish Scripts wizard
In the Introduction step of the wizard click Next
In the Choose Objects step of the wizard make sure that the Script entire database and all database objects option is selected and click Next
In the Set Scripting options step of the wizard:
Select the Save scripts to a specific location option
Specify whether the database objects and data will be scripted to a single file multiple files, as well as the path and encoding of the generated scripts
Click Advanced
In the Advanced Scripting Options dialog that will appear:
Specify the version of the SQL Server you need the database restored to in the Script for Server Version option
In the Script for Server Version option specify Schema and data
Set the following options to True:
Script Logins
Script Full-Text Indexes
Script Triggers
Click OK
Click Next
In the Summary step of the wizard click Next
In the Save or Publish Scripts step of the wizard click Finish
Execute the generated SQL script(s) against the older SQL instance
Although the procedure listed above should work:
1. It doesn’t migrate all of the database objects (e.g. sequences or queues)
2. It might fail if your database contains dependencies which SQL Server fails to recognize (e.g. dependencies to databases residing on linked servers)
You can take a look at the rest of the article on Solution center. There is also third party tools you can take in consideration.
