Passing in two-way binding prop to a slot - vue.js

I'm somewhat new to Vue, and I'm having particular difficulty in passing in formData to my individual child nodes. Ideally each child node simply updates the parent formData object allowing me to submit the form data later on as a whole.

My current thinking is that I should v-bind:field="formData.name" but that throws an error. It seems as though formData doesn't exist in the slot based HTML.
Any pointers would be gratefully received. Thanks!

As you rightly said, you need to use v-bind:field="formData.name" or :field="formData.name".
It is not working because you have defined the main app template directly in your html, and used "content distribution" to include <example-form> and <example-input>.
As defined in the docs, this content-distribution (or "transclusion" if you are familiar with Angular 1.x) works fine, but the scope belongs to the main app (the root instance, because the template belongs to it).

Now you will see that formData is not undefined anymore.
But a more proper method is to include <example-input> as part of the template of example-form component as follows:

Now it will bind to the right formData as you would expect.
But this will still not work for you because props is a one-way binding only. The child component (example-input) will get the value, but will not pass the data changes back to parent component (example-form)
For child to pass data back to parent, the right way is to use $emit as explained in this question: Updating parent data via child component?

Why aren't there props for child -> parent and $emits for parent -> child?

I have a page with a component and the page needs to access a variable in that component. Would be nice if it were reactive. Then from the page I need to activate a function in the component. Would be nice if it could be done without a reactive variable. My question is 1: what's the best way to activate the function from the parent, for example when I click a button and 2: it seems very unintuitive and random to me that they aren't both possible in both directions? Anyone maybe know how Vue suggest you do it? This whole thing seems so complex relative to the relatively simple thing I'm trying to do.
I guess I try to use props? Or are refs a better option here?
So in general: you use refs, if you need the dom element, that's the whole purpose of refs. Since you don't mention that you n ed the dom element, you don't need to use that here.

If you want to execute a function in the component whenever the value changes, you can put a watcher on the prop.
The other way around, from child to parent, you just create a listener to your emitted event and invoke a function of your choice. There are good examples in the docs in my opinion.
As per my understanding, You want to trigger the child component method from the Parent component without passing any prop as a input parameter and in same way you want to access child component data in the parent component without $emit. If Yes, You can simply achieve this using $refs.
You can attach the ref to the child component and then access it's variables and methods with the help of this $refs.

Dynamically instantiating a component in Vue.js

Following this tutorial, I'm trying to programmatically create instances of a component on my page.
The main snippet is this:

However I get two errors:
The component I'm trying to instantiate contains references to the store, and these don't work: "TypeError: Cannot read property 'state' of undefined".
For the last line of the snippet (this.$refs.container.appendChild(instance.$el)) I get this error: "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'container' of undefined"
I'm really not sure how to troubleshoot this, if anyone strong in Vue.js could give me some hint as to why I'm getting these errors and to solve them that would be terrific.
1) Since you're manually instantiating that component and it doesn't belong to your main app's component tree, the store won't be automatically injected into it from your root component. You'll have to manually provide the store to the constructor when you instantiate the component ..

2) In a Vue Single File Component (SFC), outside of the default export this doesn't refer to the Vue instance, so you don't have access to $refs or any other Vue instance property/method. To gain access to the Vue instance you'll need to move this line this.$refs.container.appendChild(instance.$el) somewhere inside the default export, for example in the mounted hook or inside one of your methods.

This is another way to instantiate a component in Vue.js, you can use two different root elements.

It works by assigning "this" to the property "parent". By setting the parent you also have access to the $store in the new instance. (Provided that "this" is another Vue instance/Component and already has access to the store, of course)

If you don't need the reference to the parent, you can just leave "parent: this," out.
Important note: When mounting many (like 500+) items on the page this way you will get a huge performance hit. It is better to only give the new Component the necessary stuff via props instead of giving it the entire "this" object.

While I got far, and it works (I made a lot of components this way), at least for my case, it came with drawbacks. For example I'm using Vuetify at the same time, and the dynamically added components didn't belong to the outer form, which meant that while local (per component) validation worked, the form didn't receive the overall status. Another thing that did not work was to disable the form. With more work, passing the form as parent property, some of that got working, but what about removing components. That didn't go well. While they were invisible, they were not really removed (memory leak).
So I changed to use render functions. It is actually much easier, well documented (both Vue 2 and Vue 3), and everything just works. I also had good help from this project: https://koumoul-dev.github.io/vuetify-jsonschema-form/latest/
Basically, to add a function dynamically, just implement the render() function instead of using a template. Works a bit like React. You can implement any logic in here to choose the tag, the options, everything. Just return that, and Vue will build the shadow-DOM and keep the real DOM up to date.
The methods in here seems to manipulate the DOM directly, which I'm glad I no longer have to do.

Creating local copy of passed props in child component in vue.js?

In vue.js what is the right way to edit prop without changing parent data?
What I mean by that is whenever we pass any property from parent to child in vue.js then if we make any change to that property in child component then the change is also reflected in parent's component.
Is there any way in vue.js to make a local copy of passed property in a child?
I googled this but everywhere it is written that we can achieve this by doing this.

here the user is passed an object and I am creating a copy of it in local user but it doesn't work at all, the local user is undefined.
Have you encountered a scenario like this where you have to make changes to a parent property in child component without affecting the state of parent component i.e- making your own copy in child and then edit it?
Any insights on this will be helpful.
I have also read somewhere that in In vue#2.3.3,when we want to pass a prop from Father to Child component, we need to manually create a local data to save the prop, that makes lots of useless works.
we can maually create the local data like this :

In my application I have a list view.
When user clicks on the See Focused View button user is redirected to below mentioned view i.e is actaully a bootstrap - modal view.
Here user can edit the value of Name, but as I am passing name here as a property from aprent component so editing it here causes it to update on parent component as well i.e in the list view as well.
In your fiddle, the child component is using Object.assign() to create a copy of data, which is an array of objects. However, this only creates a shallow copy, so the array elements would still refer to the original instances, leading to the behavior you're seeing.
A few solutions to deep copy the array:
Use JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(this.data)), which works reasonably well for primitive object properties (String, Number, BigInt, Boolean, undefined, and null):

Map the objects into new ones, which works well if the depth is only 1 (nested arrays/objects will still be shallow copied):

VueJS access child component's data from parent

I'm using the vue-cli scaffold for webpack
My Vue component structure/heirarchy currently looks like the following:

At the app level, I want a vuejs component method that can aggregate all of the child component's data into a single JSON object that can be sent off to the server.
Is there a way to access child component's data? Specifically, multiple layers deep?
If not, what is the best practice for passing down oberservable data/parameters, so that when it's modified by child components I have access to the new values? I'm trying to avoid hard dependencies between components, so as of right now, the only thing passed using component attributes are initialization values.

In my child component, there are no buttons to emit changed data. It's a form with somewhat 5~10 inputs. the data will be submitted once you click the process button in another component. so, I can't emit every property when it's changing.
So, what I did,
In my parent component, I can access child's data from "ref"
e.g

Note: If you do this all over the application I suggest move to vuex instead.
For this kind of structure It's good to have some kind of Store.
VueJS provide solution for that, and It's called Vuex.If you are not ready to go with Vuex, you can create your own simple store.
Let's try with this

The flow of props is one way down, a child should never modify its props directly.
For a complex application, vuex is the solution, but for a simple case vuex is an overkill. Just like what #Belmin said, you can even use a plain JavaScript object for that, thanks to the reactivity system.
Another solution is using events. Vue has already implemented the EventEmitter interface, a child can use this.$emit('eventName', data) to communicate with its parent.
The parent will listen on the event like this: (#update is the shorthand of v-on:update)

This is just parent-child communication, if a component needs to talk to its siblings, then you will need a global event bus, in Vue.js, you can just use an empty Vue instance:

In my case I have a registration form that I've broken down into components.
As suggested above I used $refs, In my parent I have for example:

Vue JS rc-1 Passing Data Through Props Not Working

In the release notes for Vue 1.0.0-rc.1, we are told
"The inherit option has been deprecated. Alway pass data to child
components via props."
However, the Component API section says
"$data can no longer be used as a prop."
I have been trying to pass data to child components of my root Vue instance, and have had no luck whatsoever.
In version 0.12.*, if you want/need access to a parent instance's data, methods, etc., you would simply add...
inherit: true
...to a child component.
Now, in attempting to access the parent data via props, I continue to hit a brick wall. Here is a simplified example:

The 'authorized' prop is not recognized at all this way. It works outside of the component (within the "app" id) just fine, but not within the template.
At the moment, I can access the data I need by using $root everywhere I need it. For instance:

But, my understanding is that this is 'bad form' all around, as the docs say:
Although it’s possible to access any instance the parent chain, you
should avoid directly relying on parent data in a child component and
prefer passing data down explicitly using props.
So, what I need to know is... how can I explicitly use props? I am clearly going about it the wrong way, since they are not available to my child components if I just list them in the 'props: []' array. What am I missing here?
At the end of the day, what is the best way (standards and practices) to refactor my current code to replace 'inherit: true', and still have access to the root instance data and functions? Any help/advice on this would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

As for the rest of it, (how to properly refactor code to replace 'inherit:true', I am including here the answer I received from Evan Y. on the official Vue forum, in case anyone else runs across this in the future.
His answer to the question posed above was:
If you are fairly certain about the structure, you can use
$root.authorized.
Alternatively, don't put the authorized state in the root at all. Have
a dedicated module for user state that can be imported in any

My take-away from this is that - where there are concrete, global variables that will not change, and the app structure is sound, it is okay to use $root (or $parent as the case may be), and - where elements have state that will sometimes change (such as whether or not a user is authorized/logged in), the key is to use a state management module.
Meanwhile, when passing down props between parent and child, one must declare the props in the props array, then bind them to the component in the HTML.
For example...

I was having the same issue and didn't realize that you also have to bind the value to the component prop like this:

or the shorthand
