I am attempting to set up a query that will return records following a certain hierarchy. My code thus far returns one record from groups where the count =2 where my water value is not equal to 7. If there are no records that match this criteria, I need it to look in the 'earth' field, and return values within the same table that = 'Y'. I'm relatively new to SQL, so any help you guys can give is appreciated

Good evening everyone, I'm trying to do an update on a Table but I can't really make it work
The feature needed is:
-Watch a field on a form, it contains the number of people that need to sit at the restaurant table.
-Find the first free table that has enough seats, set it as busy and assign a random waiter
Any idea?
more db infos:
Table "Waiters" is composed by ID(Autonumber),Name(Short Text). Has 2 names atm
Table "Tables" is composed by ID(Autonumber),Seats(Number),Busy(y/n),Waiter(short text). All tables have a fixed number of seats and have no Waiter + not busy
SOLUTION:
In the end i used "First" for the assignment and it works perfectly as it follows:

Top wasn't working because it was returning multiple records - every table with same number of seats - and couldn't make it work with DISTINCT. This works probably because the table is already ordered by seats

Cannot SET a field value to result of a SELECT subquery - SELECT returns a dataset not a single value. Can return a single value with domain aggregate function.
Build a query object named TopWtr:
SELECT Top 1 ID FROM Waiters ORDER BY Rnd(ID);
Then use DLookup to pull that value. The Busy field seems redundant because if table has a waiter assigned that would indicate busy.

I have a table that can store multiple descriptions for each code. However there is a flag in that table that is to indicate which of those is the main or primary description. In some instances, we have codes that have more than one with this flag set to Y which is not correct.
I am having trouble coming up with the SQL to get all the rows in that table that have more than one description set to Y.
I've used this SQL to identify rows that do not have ANY dsp_fg = 'Y'

But I am having trouble writing the SQL to get me the cod_int_ids that have more than one Y record, can someone help?

This is not perfect, but it identifies what I need.
I have one table named: ORDERS
this table contains OrderNumber's which belong to the same person and same address lines for that person.
However sometimes the data is inconsistent;
as example looking at the table screenshot: Orders table with bad data to fix -
you all can noticed that orderNumber 1 has a name associated to and addresses line1-2-3-4. sometimes those are all different by some character or even null.
my goal is to update all those 3 lines with one set of data that is already there and set equally all the 3 rows.

the biggest issues i am facing is to pick a single row out of the 3 randomly - it does not matter whihc of the data - row i pick to update the line/s
as long i make the records exaclty the same for an order number.
i also used ROWNUM =1 but it in multip[le updates will only output one row and update maybe thousand of lines with the same address and name whihch belong to an order number.
order number is the join column to use ...

A simple correlated subquery in an update statement should work:

I would like to see a most concise way to do what is outlined in this SO question: Sum values from multiple rows into one row
that is, combine multiple rows while summing a column.
But how to then delete the duplicates. In other words I have data like this:
Person Value
--------------
1 10
1 20
2 15
And I want to sum the values for any duplicates (on the Person col) into a single row and get rid of the other duplicates on the Person value. So my output would be:
Person Value
-------------
1 30
2 15
And I would like to do this without using a temp table. I think that I'll need to use OVER PARTITION BY but just not sure. Just trying to challenge myself in not doing it the temp table way. Working with SQL Server 2008 R2
Simply put, give me a concise stmt getting from my input to my output in the same table. So if my table name is People if I do a select * from People on it before the operation that I am asking in this question I get the first set above and then when I do a select * from People after the operation, I get the second set of data above.
Not sure why not using Temp table but here's one way to avoid it (tho imho this is an overkill):

First query updates every duplicate person to the summary value. Second query removes duplicate persons.

All you're asking for is a simple SUM() aggregate function and a GROUP BY
SELECT Person, SUM(Value)
FROM myTable
GROUP BY Person
The SUM() by itself would sum up the values in a column, but when you add a secondary column and GROUP BY it, SQL will show distinct values from the secondary column and perform the aggregate function by those distinct categories.
How can i get the nth row position from table without using limit ?
I have a table with four fields id,name,country,description. The query is returning by condition country = 'asia'. The total number of records is more than hundred. Now what i need is if i hav a name 'test' in 23rd position in table then how can i get the position 23rd without using limit and auto increment id ( auto id doesn't give the exact position where i am using a condition over my query)
name should not contain the duplicate record.
I just want the position to check through another query (for pagination).
Is there any function available in mysql to achieve this with out using limit?
I have got some idea through this but i cant get my expected mysql result through the answers.

Since SQL does not have concept of implicit "row position", you should define the row order by sorting the rows on a column or an expression.
This assumes your row positions are identified by the field id (i. e. rows with higher id come later).
