How can I substring "val2" from a string formatted like "val1A-val2A~val1B-val2B~val1C-val2C", etc, based on the condition of matching it with "val1"? - sql

In a certain SQL table I'm working on, there's a column that contains data formatted like:
"year-text~year-text~year-text~year-text~year-text~year-text~year-text~" and so on and so forth.
(year is in 'yyyy' format)
(for example):
"2012-10000~2013-5000~2014-500~2015-50000~2016-100~"
How, using SQL might I extract, say, the value "50000" based on having the year, "2015"
Things to note/clarify:
The "-" and "~" characters can be trusted as delimiters. That is, they do not exist within any of the values or, of course, the years.
No year exists without a value. In other words, if the value becomes blank, the year is stripped out, as well (In other words, the stored string will never have an "-" and a "~" right next to each other, such as 2016 in the string "2015-200~2016-~2014-1000", for example).
The years in the string may not be in chronological order from left to right.
There could be virtually any number of years (each with a value) in the string or, indeed, none, at all. If no year/value pair exists for the column, the value becomes NULL
Please note that after each value for each year the character "~" is applied even if it is the last year/value pair. Any string value that is not NULL will therefore always end with a "~".

Here is an option which uses SUBSTRING and CHARINDEX to get the job done:

In the sample input
2012-10000~2013-5000~2014-500~2015-50000~2016-100~
CHARINDEX('2015', col) + 5 would start at the 5 in the number 50000 after the occurrence of 2015.
The term
CHARINDEX('~', col, CHARINDEX('2015', col) + 5) - (CHARINDEX('2015', col) + 5)
yields the length of the number 50000, which in this case would be 5.

There are multiple ways to solve this and many different ways have been proposed already. Simplest would be to use LEFT / SUBSTRING and other string functions to achieve the desired result.

This approach fails if there are more 2 items in a String.
In such a scenario, we can use a splitter and then use PIVOT or convert the string into an XML and use .nodes to get string items. XML based solution have been detailed out by aads and bvr in their solution.
The answers for this question which use splitter, all use WHILE which is inefficient for splitting. Check this performance comparison. One of the best splitters around is DelimitedSplit8K, created by Jeff Moden. You can read more about it here

6. Changing this function to use NVARCHAR(MAX) will cause it to run twice as slow. It's just the nature of
VARCHAR(MAX) whether it fits in-row or not.

had or to start with. Depending on the width of the elements, this code is between 4 and 8 times faster on a

The PARSENAME function is logically designed to parse four-part object names. The nice thing about PARSENAME is that it’s not limited to parsing just SQL Server four-part object names – it will parse any function or string data that is delimited by dots.
The first parameter is the object to parse, and the second is the integer value of the object piece to return. The article is discussing parsing and rotating delimited data - company phone numbers, but it can be used to parse name/surname data also.
Example:

The article also describes using a Common Table Expression (CTE) called ‘replaceChars’, to run PARSENAME against the delimiter-replaced values. A CTE is useful for returning a temporary view or result set.
After that, the UNPIVOT function has been used to convert some columns into rows; SUBSTRING and CHARINDEX functions have been used for cleaning up the inconsistencies in the data, and the LAG function (new for SQL Server 2012) has been used in the end, as it allows referencing of previous records.

We can then seperate the CSV values into our respective columns using a SELECT statement
You can use a table-valued function STRING_SPLIT, which is available only under compatibility level 130. If your database compatibility level is lower than 130, SQL Server will not be able to find and execute the STRING_SPLIT function. I encountered a similar problem but a complex one and since this is the first thread i found regarding that issue i decided to post my finding. i know it is complex solution to a simple problem but i hope that i could help other people who go to this thread looking for a more complex solution. i had to split a string containing 5 numbers (column name: levelsFeed) and to show each number in a separate column.

Using instring function :)

Used two functions,
1. substring(string, position, length) ==> returns string from positon to length
2. instr(string,pattern) ==> returns position of pattern.
If we don’t provide length argument in substring it returns until end of string

I found that using PARSENAME as above caused any name with a period to get nulled.
So if there was an initial or a title in the name followed by a dot they return NULL.
I found this worked for me:

So I create some wrapper for string_split() which pivot result in more generic way. It's table function which returns values (nn, value1, value2, ... , value50) - enough for most CSV lines. If there are more values, they will wrap to next line - nn indicate line number. Set third parameter #columnCnt = [yourNumber] to wrap at specific position:

There are multiple ways to solve this and many different ways have been proposed already. Simplest would be to use LEFT / SUBSTRING and other string functions to achieve the desired result.

This approach fails if there are more 2 items in a String.
In such a scenario, we can use a splitter and then use PIVOT or convert the string into an XML and use .nodes to get string items. XML based solution have been detailed out by aads and bvr in their solution.
The answers for this question which use splitter, all use WHILE which is inefficient for splitting. Check this performance comparison. One of the best splitters around is DelimitedSplit8K, created by Jeff Moden. You can read more about it here

Other Notes:
1. Optimized for VARCHAR(8000) or less. No testing or error reporting for truncation at 8000 characters is done.
2. Optimized for single character delimiter. Multi-character delimiters should be resolvedexternally from this

6. Changing this function to use NVARCHAR(MAX) will cause it to run twice as slow. It's just the nature of
VARCHAR(MAX) whether it fits in-row or not.
7. Multi-machine testing for the method of using UNPIVOT instead of 10 SELECT/UNION ALLs shows that the UNPIVOT method
is quite machine dependent and can slow things down quite a bit.

and the reduction of all previous calculations (thanks to the switch to a "zero based" cteTally) to just one
instance of one add and one instance of a subtract. The length calculation for the final element (not
followed by a delimiter) in the string to be split has been greatly simplified by using the ISNULL/NULLIF
combination to determine when the CHARINDEX returned a 0 which indicates there are no more delimiters to be
had or to start with. Depending on the width of the elements, this code is between 4 and 8 times faster on a
single CPU box than the original code especially near the 8K boundary.

The PARSENAME function is logically designed to parse four-part object names. The nice thing about PARSENAME is that it’s not limited to parsing just SQL Server four-part object names – it will parse any function or string data that is delimited by dots.
The first parameter is the object to parse, and the second is the integer value of the object piece to return. The article is discussing parsing and rotating delimited data - company phone numbers, but it can be used to parse name/surname data also.
Example:

The article also describes using a Common Table Expression (CTE) called ‘replaceChars’, to run PARSENAME against the delimiter-replaced values. A CTE is useful for returning a temporary view or result set.
After that, the UNPIVOT function has been used to convert some columns into rows; SUBSTRING and CHARINDEX functions have been used for cleaning up the inconsistencies in the data, and the LAG function (new for SQL Server 2012) has been used in the end, as it allows referencing of previous records.

We can then seperate the CSV values into our respective columns using a SELECT statement
You can use a table-valued function STRING_SPLIT, which is available only under compatibility level 130. If your database compatibility level is lower than 130, SQL Server will not be able to find and execute the STRING_SPLIT function. You can change a compatibility level of the database using the following command:

I encountered a similar problem but a complex one and since this is the first thread i found regarding that issue i decided to post my finding. i know it is complex solution to a simple problem but i hope that i could help other people who go to this thread looking for a more complex solution. i had to split a string containing 5 numbers (column name: levelsFeed) and to show each number in a separate column.

1. substring(string, position, length) ==> returns string from positon to length
2. instr(string,pattern) ==> returns position of pattern.

I found that using PARSENAME as above caused any name with a period to get nulled.
So if there was an initial or a title in the name followed by a dot they return NULL.
I found this worked for me:

So I create some wrapper for string_split() which pivot result in more generic way. It's table function which returns values (nn, value1, value2, ... , value50) - enough for most CSV lines. There are multiple ways to solve this and many different ways have been proposed already. Simplest would be to use LEFT / SUBSTRING and other string functions to achieve the desired result.

This approach fails if there are more 2 items in a String.
In such a scenario, we can use a splitter and then use PIVOT or convert the string into an XML and use .nodes to get string items. XML based solution have been detailed out by aads and bvr in their solution.
The answers for this question which use splitter, all use WHILE which is inefficient for splitting. Check this performance comparison. One of the best splitters around is DelimitedSplit8K, created by Jeff Moden. You can read more about it here

The PARSENAME function is logically designed to parse four-part object names. The nice thing about PARSENAME is that it’s not limited to parsing just SQL Server four-part object names – it will parse any function or string data that is delimited by dots.
The first parameter is the object to parse, and the second is the integer value of the object piece to return. The article is discussing parsing and rotating delimited data - company phone numbers, but it can be used to parse name/surname data also.

The article also describes using a Common Table Expression (CTE) called ‘replaceChars’, to run PARSENAME against the delimiter-replaced values. A CTE is useful for returning a temporary view or result set.
After that, the UNPIVOT function has been used to convert some columns into rows; SUBSTRING and CHARINDEX functions have been used for cleaning up the inconsistencies in the data, and the LAG function (new for SQL Server 2012) has been used in the end, as it allows referencing of previous records.

You can use a table-valued function STRING_SPLIT, which is available only under compatibility level 130. If your database compatibility level is lower than 130, SQL Server will not be able to find and execute the STRING_SPLIT function. You can change a compatibility level of the database using the following command:
ALTER DATABASE DatabaseName SET COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL = 130

I encountered a similar problem but a complex one and since this is the first thread i found regarding that issue i decided to post my finding. i know it is complex solution to a simple problem but i hope that i could help other people who go to this thread looking for a more complex solution. i had to split a string containing 5 numbers (column name: levelsFeed) and to show each number in a separate column.

Used two functions,
1. substring(string, position, length) ==> returns string from positon to length
2. instr(string,pattern) ==> returns position of pattern.
If we don’t provide length argument in substring it returns until end of string

I found that using PARSENAME as above caused any name with a period to get nulled.
So if there was an initial or a title in the name followed by a dot they return NULL.
I found this worked for me:

So I create some wrapper for string_split() which pivot result in more generic way. It's table function which returns values (nn, value1, value2, ... , value50) - enough for most CSV lines. If there are more values, they will wrap to next line - nn indicate line number. Set third parameter #columnCnt = [yourNumber] to wrap at specific position:

SQL trying to replace middle characters with *

I am trying to replace SQL results with all the middle values with asterix, *. All results are words. I am using SSMS.
The words that are 4-5 letters, it should only show 1 letter in the beginning, one to the end.
6 letters and more, it it should only show 2 letter in the beginning, 2 letters in the end.
1-3 letters, no replacement.
For example:
(I am now using - instead of * so it does not make the text bold).
"Banana" 6 letters should become ba--na
"False" 5 letters should become F---e
"a" stays the same
"Selin is a vegetable and banana is a fruit" becomes "S---n is a ve-----le and ba--na is a f---t."
What I have done so far, is to make this for emails, after the #. But now I want it to happen with every word of the result.

How should I look into this?
If I had to deal with this in SQL Server I'd operate on each word as a row, however using string_split is not (currently) an option since it does not guarantee ordering.
The following uses json to split the string as an array and provides a key value for ordering, which allows the words to be aggregated in the correct order:

I'm not sure how e-mail fits into all this because you're asking for word masks, so I'm going to assume you actually want this. Use divide and conquer to implement this, so first implement an expression that would do this for simplest cases (e.g. single words). Then if you need it for e-mails, just split the e-mails however you see fit and then apply the same expression.
The expression itself is rather simple:

Formatting a number as a monetary value including separators

I need some help with a sql transformation. This part of query that I have been provided with:
'$' + replace(cast((CAST(p.Price1 AS decimal(10,2)) * cast(isnull(p.Multiplier,1) as decimal(10,2))) as varchar), '.0000', '')
Basically, it ends up being a varchar that looks like this: $26980
I need to insert a comma at the thousand and million mark (if applicable). So in this instance, $26,980
What's the easiest way to do that without having to rewrite the whole thing?
Do it on the client side. Having said that, this example should show you the way.

The key is in the last expression
'$' + parsename(convert(varchar,cast(p.price1*isnull(p.Multiplier,1) as money),1),2)
Note: if p.price1 is of a higher precision than decimal(10,2), then you may have to cast it in the expression as well to produce a faithful translation since the original CAST(p.Priced1 as decimal(10,2)) will be performing rounding.
If you really must do it in TSQL you can use CONVERT(), but this sort of thing really doesn't belong in the database:
