WCF Service Address on Azure Website - wcf

I am planning to run a WCF service with netTcpRelayBinding on azure website.
One of the interesting feature that azure website allows is to update the appsettings & swap between live and staging environment.
The problem that I am having is how can I change the address of service bus address when I swap from staging to production and vice versa. I think one way to achieve is by having the service address in appsettings.
Note: I can achieve this with web.config transform and redeployment. However we are trying to avoid redeployment.
The problem with example:

Due to it can swap the App settings, so I suggest you can write your Address value into App settings in web.config file. Meanwhile, you need read the address value and set it as your service's endpoint in your code. If you swap the slots, you just modify the App Setting on the Azure portal.

With advise from Will, I managed to write service host factory which solves the problem the perfectly.

WCF: Service References in production

I have some doubts about using Service References for an application that will be deployed to different customers. It's a WCF service on vb.net that will be hosted in a Windows Service, and it will be used by very different customers with different IP Addresses. Different environments, so to speak.
I've already made the server and the client. They work just fine using Service References on the client, but since these need the URL of the service (which will have this structure: net.tcp://SomeHost:6666/SomeService), the question is: what can I do to use the Service References on the customer's environment? I'm thinking about something like changing its URL programatically, but I don't know if it's possible.
Of course, the hostname will change from customer to customer, but the Service References are static. I thought of using a different approach, such as: http://mstecharchitect.blogspot.com.ar/2009/01/invoking-wcf-service-without-service.html. But this would make me lose the benefits of the Service Reference, which, as I understand, creates the needed proxy so I can use it on the client side.
Whatever else information you need to help me, don't hesitate to ask. And thanks in advance!
You can store in config file (appsettings, for example), your service endpoint address, when in code you'll update only the host name.
Your appsettings will contain something like net.tcp://{0}:6666/SomeService.
When creating client's (proxy) instance - you'll add specific host and pass this built address.
Something like:
app.config on client:

WCF service inside an MVC-app that uses msmqIntegrationBinding does not receive messages from msmq

I have a MVC-app that has a controller with an action that is supposed to expose data from the latest message in a queue (msmq). I have added a private queue on my local machine. I want the application to automatically receive a message from the queue when one is added. For this i am using msmqIntegrationBinding on a WCF-service that has been added to the application. The method that takes the message in the contract i then supposed to save the message in the application cache so that it can be accessed when a client asks for the latest data.
The challenge I now face is that when I add a message to the queue, it's not being picked up by the WCF-service. I need guidance at what I might be doing wrong or feedback on my approach. Please help.

Try changing your operation contract to

It's possible that the WCF stack is having difficulty with the deserialization to XmlDocument.
UPDATE
Things to try:
Make suer your queue "testsmessagequeue" have the correct permissions set. In this case the service account running the app pool hosting your controller needs to have the "Receive Message" permissions set.
Enable MSMQ logging (if you're on windows 2008 server or windows 7 and above) which can be found in Event Viewer under: Applications and Services Logs -> Microsoft -> Windows -> MSMQ -> End2End. This will capture everything that happens in MSMQ including any errors.
Try making the queue transactional (if it not already). This will ensure that an error condition will exist on message non-delivery.
Enable WCF tracing on your service endpoint to see any specific WCF errors happening with the dequeuing of the message.
UPDATE 2
I think the problem is queue permissions. Your app pool is running under the user ApplicationPoolIdentity (if it's running under the .net 4.0 app pool). The user which corresponds to this identity is called DefaultAppPool. You need to give this user receive message permissions on the queue. To select this user search for a local account called IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool in the Select Users dialogue.
UPDATE 3
It just struck me that IIS is not an appropriate hosting container for a queue listener. The reason for this is that the app pool unloads after a period of inactivity. This is controlled by IIS and is not configurable. (see here)
I think you should create a new hosting container in a windows service (you can use a console host to spike this) to host the queue endpoint. The windows service will run under an actual service account so granting permissions will be less complicated.
This service can write either write directly into the cache, or if this is not possible, should write to a DB where the website controller can refresh the cache from.
Does this make sense?
UPDATE 4
Poison message means that the message cannot be dequeued because of some problem with it. Check the system queue called Transactional Dead Letter Queue and see if your message is in there.

set maxItemsInObjectGraph in client config

I am specifying maxItemsInObjectGraph in the server config file but while creating client config file, this attribute is ignored and i have to manually add it in the endpointBehaviors section.
Is there a way i can make some changes in the config file so that everytime i generate client config and proxy via Svcutil.exe, this behaviour is automatically included in the client config file?
i tried ading [ServiceBehavior(MaxItemsInObjectGraph = 2147483647)] to the service interface but it gives me an error saying Attribute 'ServiceBehavior' is not valid on this declaration type. It is only valid on 'class' declarations.
Behaviors are typically local settings (you can have different values for client and server, and the communication can still work out fine), so they're not exposed in WSDL (and so svcutil will not be able to find that value).
You have basically 2 choices: update the client config every time you generate, or in code, when you create an instance of the proxy class, update the MIIOG property, similar to the code below.

Note that if you are handwriting the client implementation instead of using auto-generated stubs, the Endpoint is available through the ChannelFactory used to create the channel for the service interface.
No, that is another behavior which is configured per participant. Each client has control over this property and service doesn't expose this property because it could be considered as security issue.
If your problem is mainly about development (where you don't want to modify your behavior every time you refresh the reference) you can use commonBehaviors section which can be defined only in machine.config:

Common behaviors are added to every service / endpoint running on the machine. It is perhaps good for development but you mustn't forget that once you will prepare package for production you will have to add this configuration to production's config file - because of that it is better to maintain such configuration file continuously and use it on some build / test server.

WCF / Silverlight Call Back to Server Fails in IIS

Using Silverlight 3, Windows XP, IIS 5.1, I've written a small app which uses the channel method of calling the server rather than the 'add service reference' as per this MSFT article.
The application opens and the call to the server work when running it on the development computer in VS 2008 using the address localhost plus the port number. When I change the address to the computer name, dellnov2006, and publish the application to IIS, the application opens, but the call to the web service does not work.
Watching the call in Web Dev Helper, I see that the app was trying to call the service file, http://dellnov2006/Service1.svc, and is getting a 404 error.
So far, I've:
-In IIS mapped the .svc type to aspnet-isapi.dll
-Run the utility CleanIISScriptMaps
-Run aspnet_regiis.exe -i –enable
Any help would be appreciated - I am running out of ideas on this.

Could be one of the following:
A problem with the web.config of the service. For example that localhost was part of the address.
That the service cannot find the dll which should be in the bin directory
Try browsing to the service with a web browser
Try adding the port number to the computer name. Whenever I'm testing local sites through a virtual machine that is always a necessity for me.
Change this:

The solution to this was very simple, but it took both of your answers for me to think of
it.
Browsing to the service as suggested by Shiraz worked, so problem with calling service.
Suggestion to change endpoint address to include port # sounded good, but did not work.
Solution was to change:

to this:
new EndpointAddress("http://dellnov2006/Silverlight/Service1.svc"));
where 'Silverlight' is the alias of the virtual directory. In other words, I open the app on IIS as 'http://dellnov2006/Silverlight/

Could not find default endpoint element

I've added a proxy to a webservice to a VS2008/.NET 3.5 solution. When constructing the client .NET throws this error:
Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'IMySOAPWebService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuaration file was found for your application or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element.
Searching for this error tells me to use the full namespace in the contract. Here's my app.config with full namespace:

In this case you will need to include the WS configuration settings into the main projects app.config if its a winapp or web.config if its a web app. This is the way to go even with PRISM and WPF/Silverlight.
I solved this (I think as others may have suggested) by creating the binding and endpoint address instances myself - because I did not want to add new settings to the config files (this is a replacement for some existing library code which is used widely, and previously used an older Web Service Reference etc.), and so I wanted to be able to drop this in without having add new config settings everywhere.

If you are using https then you need to use BasicHttpsBinding rather than BasicHttpBinding.
Having tested several options, I finally solved this by using
contract="IMySOAPWebService"
i.e. without the full namespace in the config. For some reason the full name didn't resolve properly
I've had this same issue. It turns out that for a web REFERENCE, you have to supply the URL as the first parameter to the constructor:

For a new style web SERVICE REFERENCE, you have to supply a name that refers to an endpoint entry in the configuration:

Now the Consumer project had all the related configuration setting in <system.serviceModel> Tag of my app.config, its was still throwing the same error as the above.
All i did is added the same tag <system.serviceModel> to my main project's app.config file, and finally we were good to go.
The Real problem, as far as in my case was, it was reading the wrong configuration file. Instead of consumer's app.config, it was referring main proj's config. it took me two hours to figure that out.

Yes, but if you can't change main project (Orchard CMS for example), you can keep WCF service config in your project.

I'm using Silverlight 3 Prism (CAB) with WCF
When I call a WCF service in a Prism module, I get the same error:
Could not find default endpoint element that references contract
'IMyService' in the service model client configuaration section. This
might be because no configuaration file was found for your application

It turns out that its looking in the Shell's .xap file for a ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file, not in the module's ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file. I added my endpoint and binding to the existing ServiceReferences.ClientConfig file in my Silverlight Shell application (it calls it's own WCF services).
Then I had to rebuild the Shell app to generate the new .xap file for my Web project's ClientBin folder.
Now this line of code finally works:

Several responses here hit upon the correct solution when you're facing the mind-numbingly obscure error of referencing the service from a class file: copy service config info into your app.config web.config of your console or windows app. None of those answers seem to show you what to copy though. Let's try and correct that.
Here's what I copied out of my class library's config file, into my console app's config file, in order to get around this crazy error for a service I write called "TranslationServiceOutbound".
You basically want everything inside the system.serviceModel section:

I was getting this error within an ASP.NET application where the WCF service had been added to a class library which is being added to the ASP.NET application as a referenced .dll file in the bin folder. To resolve the error, the config settings in the app.config file within the class library referencing the WCF service needed to be copied into the web.config settings for the ASP.NET site/app.
I had the same problem, but changing the contract namespace didn't work for me. So I tried a .Net 2 style web reference instead of a .Net 3.5 service reference. That worked.
To use a Web reference in Visual Studio 2008, click on 'Add Service Reference', then click 'Advanced' when the dialog box appears. In that you will find an option that will let you use a Web reference instead of a Service reference.
I found (as well as copying to the client UI's App.config as I was using a Class Library interface) I had to prefix the name of the binding with the name of the Service Reference (mine is ServiceReference in the below).
e.g.:

Unit testing a non-library application that consumes a service can cause this problem.
The information that others have entered addresses the root cause of this. If you are trying to write automated test cases and the unit you are testing will actually invoke the service interface, you need to add the service reference to the test project. This is a flavor of the application using library type of error. I did not immediately realize this though because my code that consumes the interface is not in a library. However, when the test actually runs it will be running from the test assembly, not the assembly under test.
Adding a service reference to the unit test project resolved my issue.
I have a situation which in the Unit test. I copied the app.config file to the unit test project. So the unit test project also contains endpoint information.
I faced this problem once. It was because i was still developing the interface that uses WCF service. I configured test application and continued development. Then in development, i changed some of the services' namespaces. So i double checked "system.serviceModel -> client -> endpoint -> contract" in web.config to match WCF class. Then problem is solved.
The namespace in your config should reflect the rest of the namespace path after your client's default namespace (as configured in the project properties). Based on your posted answer, my guess is that your client is configured to be in the "Fusion.DataExchange.Workflows" namespace. If you moved the client code to another namespace you would need to update the config to match the remaining namespace path.

Hi I've encountered the same problem but the best solution is to let the .NET to configure your client side configuration. What I discover is this when I add a service reference with a query string of http:/namespace/service.svc?wsdl=wsdl0 it does NOT create a configuration endpoints at the client side. But when I remove the ?wsdl-wsdl0 and only use the url http:/namespace/service.svc, it create the endpoint configuration at the client configuration file. for short remoe the " ?WSDL=WSDL0" .
Do not put service client declaration line as class field,
instead of this, create instance at each method that used in.
So problem will be fixed. If you create service client instance as class field, then design time error occurs !
In case if you are using WPF application using PRISM framework then configuration should exist in your start up project (i.e. in the project where your bootstrapper resides.)
There seem to be several ways to create/fix this issue. For me, the CRM product I am using was written in native code and is able to call my .NET dll, but I run into the configuration information needing to be at/above the main application. For me, the CRM application isn't .NET, so I ended up having to put it in my machine.config file (not where I want it). In addition, since my company uses Websense I had a hard time even adding the Service Reference due to a 407 Proxy Authentication Required issue, that to required a modification to the machine.cong.
Proxy solution:
To get the WCF Service Reference to work I had to copy the information from the app.config of my DLL to the main application config (but for me that was machine.config). And I also had to copy the endpoint information to that same file. Once I did that it starting working for me.
Ok. My case was a little diffrent but finally i have found the fix for it:
I have a Console.EXE -> DLL -> Invoking WS1 -> DLL -> Invoking WS2
I have had both the configurations of the service model of WS1, and WS2 in the Console.EXE.config as recommended. - didnt solve the issue.
But it still didn't work, until i have added the WebReference of WS2 to WS1 also and not only to the DLL that actually creating and invoking the proxy of WS2.
If you reference the web service in your class library then you have to copy app.config to your windows application or console application
solution: change Configuration of outer project same the class library's wcf configuration.

Solution for me was to remove the endpoint name from the Endpoint Name attribute in client web.config
this allowed the proxy to use
ChannelFactory<TService> _channelFactory = new ChannelFactory<TService>("");
only took all day to work out.
Also the contract name was wrong once this fix was in place although it had been wrong when the initial error appear.
Double then triple check for contract name strings people !!

As L.R. correctly points out, this needs to be defined in the right places. For me, that meant one in my Unit Test project's app.config as well as one in the main service project's web.config.
I had this error when I was referencing the Contract in the configuration file element without the global scope operator.
i.e.
<endpoint contract="global::MyNamepsace.IMyContract" .../>
works, but
<endpoint contract="MyNamepsace.IMyContract" .../>
gives the "Could not find default endpoint element that references contract" error.
The assembly containing MyNamepsace.IMyContract is in a different assembly to the main application, so this may explain the need to use the global scope resolution.
When you are adding a service reference
beware of namespace you are typing in:
You should append it to the name of your interface:

I got same error and I have tried many things but didn't work, than I noticed that my "contract" was not same at all projects, I changed the contract as would be same for all projects inside solution and than it worked.
This is project A

Finally I changed for both as :

I had the same issue and it was solved only when the host application and the dll that used that endpoint had the same service reference name.
