I am trying to change this code to only go from column 3 to a certain column farther down the workbook. Instead of what I have now, I am drawing a blank on how the syntax needs to change in order for me to be allowed to do this. Thanks!
For chartdatacol = 3 To Worksheets("Chart Data").Cells(Rows.Count, 2).End(xlUp).row
If you want to loop through the last column, use
Worksheets("Chart Data").Cells(1, Worksheets("Chart Data").Columns.Count).end(xlToLeft).Column
This assumes that row 1 has data in the last column you are interested in.
So your loop would look like
For chartdatacol = 3 To Worksheets("Chart Data").Cells(1, Worksheets("Chart Data").Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).Column
For clarity, I would take the number fetching out of your for statement
Dim i as Integer,
lastCol as Integer,
firstCol as Integer
firstCol = 3
lastCol = mySheet.UsedRange.Columns.Count
For i = firstCol to lastCol
--Do something
Next i

I am having a difficult time coming up with a solution for a project I'm working on. I am needing a Macro to look at a specific sheet, find a specific value, and cut/paste that value at the end of the row.
Looking at the example file I have attached, you can see that each customer has a unique ID in column A.
They are answering a questionnaire, and each answer they give generates a unique ID.
The order of the answer ID's doesn't matter, as they are unique. The only one that DOES matter is the answer with Semicolons. That answer ID needs to be the customer's last ID. So I need to find a way to cut these answer ID's and paste them to the end of each row.
I want the semi-colon answer to be the last answer in the array. First time posting on here so I'm sorry if the format is incorrect.
Updated: Example File
I think that this will do what you're looking for. It goes through columns and loops through each row in those columns and once it finds a cell with a ;, it just moves that value down to the bottom of the row it was found in.
Sub AnswerID()
Dim lastCol As Long
lastCol = Cells(1, Columns.count).End(xlToLeft).Column
Dim i As Long
For i = 1 To lastCol
Dim lastRow As Long
lastRow = Cells(Rows.count, i).End(xlUp).row
Dim j As Long
For j = 1 To lastRow
If InStr(Cells(j, i), ";") > 0 Then
Cells(lastRow, i).offset(1, 0).Value2 = Cells(j, i).Value2
Cells(j, i).Value2 = vbNullString
Exit For
End If
Next j
Next i
End Sub
For example, I have a data as the following in a column:
I need to make all possible unique combinations of this in another table in 2 columns using VBA like below:
Any help on how can I achieve this? Thanks.
PS. The column data is variable. It can have various number of currencies. The above one is just a small example.
This is an example how to find all these permutations. With this you should be able to solve it.
Option Explicit
Public Sub FindPermutations()
Dim ws As Worksheet
Set ws = Worksheets("Sheet1")
Const fRow As Long = 2 'first row
Const lRow As Long = 5 'last row
Dim i As Long, j As Long
For i = fRow To lRow
For j = i + 1 To lRow
'print out all permutations
Debug.Print ws.Cells(i, "A").Value, ws.Cells(j, "A").Value
Next j
Next i
End Sub
How does it work?
It uses 2 loops. The first one i runs through all rows. The second j only from the current i row to the last row. This ensures that already found combinations are not used again.
Note that I used constants for fRow and lRow for an easy demonstration. You might want to change them into variables in a production environment.

Hi,
I am trying to work with a code I have made but am having some trouble.
If you look at my photo above, in cell B3 I have a CUSIP. What I want to do is copy that CUSIP and paste it in each row of info for that CUSIP (so rows A4 till A8). Then I want to move to the second CUSIP in J3 (the CUSIPS are all in row 3 and 8 columns apart) and then paste the CUSIP in rows J4 to J35.
I want to keep doing this over and over for 1000 securities but the issue is that the rows differ in length.
My code is working until I get to the last piece of code which I have put in as a comment. It works but is static. Only works for moving from the 1st to 2nd security then fails. I am trying to think of a dynamic way for me to move from the cell which the CUSIP is last pasted in to the third row and corresponding column everytime (column will be 9 apart every time from the last pasted cell).
Here it is:
Sub CUSIP_Copy_Paste()
Dim LastRow As Long
Dim LastCol As Long
Dim c As Long
Dim r As Long
Range("B3").Select
LastCol = Cells(4, Columns.Count).End(xlToLeft).column
For c = 2 To LastCol Step 8
LastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, c).End(xlUp).row
ActiveCell.Copy
Cells(4, ActiveCell.Offset(1, -1).column).PasteSpecial xlPasteValues
For r = 5 To LastRow
Cells(r, ActiveCell.Offset(1, 0).column).PasteSpecial xlPasteValues
Next r
''''''ActiveCell.Offset(-5, 9).Select
Next c
End Sub
Thanks!
Your error lies in the final offset. Instead of -5, put in a variable, preferrably the variable which is the difference between the end of the rows count and the beginning, which is always 3.
That is to say, Offset(3 - lastRow, 9)
You almost had it friendo :)
I am putting together some VBA code which i think needs a loop. Loops are often my biggest weakness with VBA and I need some assistance.
I have a text file which i import into an excel spreadsheet. The length of how many columns and rows and down will vary day to day.
For example today's file might have data in columns A - H, tomorrow it might be A : P. Each typical row count will be around the 200 mark, so not to long.
In essence im trying to make one long list in column A from all the data spread over multiple columns.
Im looking for a loop that checks if the column has data in it, if it does it then copies the data into the bottom of the data in column A.
So for illustration purposes say the data goes out to column G, it will copy B1, xl down, find the first empty row in A and paste, then do the same for C, stopping after column G.
I hope I’ve been clear when writing this.
Thanks in advance
Matt
You first want to loop over all columns. So a FOR loop from column B to LastColumn (which there is a function for.) Then you want to loop through all rows within that column to find the first empty row, and then substract one to arrive at the last column with data.
If Cells(row,col) = "" Then
LastRowCopy = row -1
Then you want to copy everything to A1, and keep track of the last row you posted in. So you want to have a variable that counts. Something like:
LastRowPaste = LastRowPaste + row
I could write the code for it, but perhaps you learn more by figuring it out yourself.
Edit: Also perhaps an interesting read on finding last rows and or columns is this: http://www.rondebruin.nl/win/s9/win005.htm
Edit2: You could ofcourse also use the same for finding the last column as the method I used for finding the last row. Then you just loop through the columns and see if:
If Cells(1, col) = "" Then
LastCol = col -1
Edit3:
I wrote out the entire code:
Sub copypaste()
Dim LastRowCopy As String
Dim LastRowPaste As String
Dim LastCol As String
Dim col As Integer
Dim row As Integer
LastCol = ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Columns.Count
LastRowCopy = ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows.Count
LastRowPaste = ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows.Count
For row = 1 to LastRowPaste
If Cells(row, 1) = "" Then
LastRowPaste = row
Exit For
End if
Next row
For col = 2 To LastCol
If Application.WorksheetFunction.CountA(Columns(col)) = 0 Then
LastCol = col -1
End If
Next col
For col = 2 To LastCol
For row = 1 To LastRowCopy
If Not Cells(row, col) = "" Then
Cells(LastRowPaste, 1) = Cells(row, col)
LastRowPaste = LastRowPaste + 1
End If
Next row
Next col
End Sub
I need a formula or function which is going to fulfill my below mentioned need. I have a excel data of around 11000 rows and data looks somewhat like in Column A:
Now in column B i want the result to be printed like it mentioned below: which literally means it should count the values present in column A and print it in the column B, I don't need to repeat count:
Column A Column B
PC-101 1
PC-101 1
PC-102 2
PC-102 2
PC-103 3
PC-104 4
PC-106 5
PC-107 6
PC-104 4
PC-106 5
PC-106 5
I tried with the "count" series formulas but the result was null.
Even i wrote the macro as given below( which i got from stackoverflow) but even it is printing the repeating count:
Sub CountOccurence()
' Reference: Microsoft Scripting Runtime
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Set oDict = New Dictionary
Dim wS As Worksheet
Dim r As Integer, rLast As Integer
Set wS = Sheet1
rLast = wS.Cells(1, 1).CurrentRegion.Rows.Count
For r = 3 To rLast Step 1
If Not (oDict.Exists(wS.Cells(r, 1).Value)) Then
oDict.Add wS.Cells(r, 1).Value, 1
Else
oDict.Item(wS.Cells(r, 1).Value) = oDict.Item(wS.Cells(r, 1).Value) + 1
End If
wS.Cells(r, 2).Value = oDict.Item(wS.Cells(r, 1).Value)
Next r
Set oDict = Nothing
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub
Can anyone help me regarding this? Thanks in advance.
I tried with the "count" series formulas but the result was null.
A simple Excel formula can do this.
Put 1 in Cell B1 and then put this formula in cell B2 and pull it down.
=IF(COUNTIF($A$1:$A2,A2)>1,VLOOKUP(A2,A:B,2,0),B1+1)
Assuming that your data in column a is sorted, you can simply place 1 in B2 this formula in B3 and copy it down:
=IF(A2<>A3,B2+1,B2)
